Welcome to the Website of the Institute of Philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin!
The Institute of Philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin is one of the major, longstanding institutes of philosophy in Germany and can look back on a remarkable history, having been the workplace of many prominent figures, including Wilhelm Weischedel, Margherita von Brentano, Karlfried Gründer, Jacob Taubes, Ernst Tugendhat, Michael Theunissen, Albrecht Wellmer, and Peter Bieri. Ever since it was founded, the institute has been distinguished by its disciplinary breadth and diversity. Its current members engage in research and teaching activities in eight thematic divisions that focus on topics including analytical philosophy, phenomenology, classical Germany philosophy, post-structuralism, and the history of philosophy.
We view philosophy as an invitation to think for oneself. At our institute, you can study philosophy independently, on a broad basis, and systematically. Even before you finish your studies, we invite you to grow into the field of research via the lively research scene at the institute (with meetings, conferences, colloquia, and lecture series) and the many interdisciplinary ties that exist with collaborative research centers and clusters of excellence at Freie Universität. The institute maintains an outstanding international network. The Philological Library, located right near the institute, and the University Library both have excellent philosophical holdings, allowing students to work efficiently and productively. The institute building itself is also an ideal study environment. Designed by architects Hinrich and Inken Baller, it boasts a green outdoor setting and glass façade, a garden and rooms flooded with light.
The Institute of Philosophy offers both bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, and doctoral candidates are also welcome. The institute believes philosophy should be studied independently and according to the student’s interests. In line with this approach, the institute offers a short and intensive orientation phase during the bachelor’s degree program, when students are taught thematic foundations and methods of working in philosophy. With the same emphasis on independent working, the rest of the bachelor’s degree program – and, to an even greater extent, the master’s degree program – is distinguished by the fact that students are given as much freedom as possible to pursue their systematic and historical interests on a deeper and more advanced level.

Congratulations to Graduate Hood Recipient Genesis Sorrick!
The Department of Philosophy is so proud of M.A. graduate Genesis Sorrick. Not only was she selected as graduate hood recipient for the College of Liberal and Creative Arts, but she also served as graduate speaker at San Francisco State University's 123 rd Commencement on May 24, 2024.
( From SF State News )
Genesis Sorrick, M.A., Philosophy College of Liberal & Creative Arts
In September 2020, amidst the chaos of COVID-19, the eerie orange sky from raging wildfires and the protests against police brutality, Genesis Sorrick gave birth to her first child. Bringing a human into the world during this time was incredibly daunting. Sorrick responded with her characteristic strength, integrity and clear-sighted optimism. Inspired to understand the world better and envision a brighter future for her daughter, she decided to return to college and complete her B.A. in Philosophy at SF State.
Later, during Sorrick’s first semester as a Philosophy grad student at SF State, she began to experience excruciating pain and debilitating neurological symptoms. Nevertheless, she refused to let desperation consume her. She channeled her energy into understanding her experience and found solace in her academic studies.
She excelled in her courses, writing brilliant research papers, contributing insightfully to discussions and the life of the department, working conscientiously as a teaching assistant and maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average (GPA). Living with chronic pain led Sorrick to her M.A. thesis: a remarkably original, meticulously researched and highly persuasive account of medical gaslighting.
“Philosophy allowed me to ground myself in something other than my pain and focus on envisioning a better world for my daughters,” she said.
Sorrick’s journey has been shaped by additional obstacles. She is a Mexican-born woman and the first in her family to complete a college degree. Also, as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, she came out to friends and family in high school in a primarily right-wing, conservative town. Rather than dissuade her from pursuing her dreams, these experiences helped Sorrick develop the strength and tenacity she has needed to thrive at SF State, raise her children and live with chronic pain. She is a remarkable person, with a strong commitment to enacting positive change, both as a philosopher and a mother.

Doctor of Philosophy in Teaching and Learning, Critical Studies in Education: Race, Justice, and Equity
CSERJE prepares highly qualified scholars to affect change in society. The specialization bridges theory and practice and deeply engages students in liberatory research practices (i.e. decolonizing, emancipatory, and humanizing theories, methodologies and methods) while also offering space for critical interrogation of historical practices that have harmed and disenfranchised communities. Faculty ask students to engage in deep reflexive understanding of the ways their selves are in relation to their worlds (both global and local and the interactions between those two) that provide critical implications for policy and practice. CSRJE prepares students to build with families, social groups, schools, organizations, and communities to interrupt and disrupt injustices while re-centering experiences and knowledges often held at the margins of society.
Students who began the T&L PhD program in AU24 or prior should follow the curriculum of one of the 8 areas of study associated with the PhD program prior to its redesign. This specialization only pertains to students who began in AU25, or, those who began prior and have already discussed and executed a specialization change with their faculty advisor. If you have any questions regarding which plan of study is most appropriate for you, please consult with your faculty advisor.
Funding Opportunities
Key to teaching, research and learning in the college, associateships provide students with professional experience and financial support.
These financial awards are made by Ohio State to students based on academic merit through a university-wide competition.
The college annually awards scholarships to its students to support their academic goals.
