Welcome to Words per Page

Enter total number of words, type in your words.

There are times when it helps to know how many words per page you're writing. While a general guideline is one page is 500 words (single spaced) or 250 words (double spaced), this is a ballpark figure. The truth is the number of words per page depends on a variety of factors such as the type of font, the font size, spacing elements, margin spacing, and paragraph length to name a few. While it's not possible to take into all these factors when estimating how many words per page there will be for your writing, this calculator can give a more accurate words per page conversion estimate than the typical 250/500 ballpark figure .

The calculator is able to provide a more accurate conversion by taking into account more specific information. For example, you can choose from a different variety of common fonts to generate an estimate:

  • Comic Sans MS
  • Times New Roman

You can then choose your preferred spacing from the following options:

  • Single spaced
  • Double spaced

Finally, you can choose your preferred font size: 10, 11, 12, 13 or 14.

By using these three options to more accurately define your writing, the words per page calculator should provide a better estimate on how many words you need to write to fill a page. In the opposite direction, it can give a more accurate estimate of how many pages you have created if you only know the word count .

While we make every attempt to make our calculators as accurate as possible, the results won't be perfect. This converter addresses some issues to provide a more accurate estimate, but in the end, it's still an estimate. Other issues such as margin space and paragraph length will likely result in some variation from the calculations given. That being said, it should provide a more accurate indication of the number of pages a specific word count will be and the number of words per page you type when compared to the general rule of thumb.

For general information, the following are calculations using 12-point Arial font, double spaced:

Tips for Shortening an Essay

If you’re using this tool, there’s a good chance you’re trying to meet a specific page length or range for an essay. Meeting those restraints can be hard: how are you supposed to fit your organic, unique ideas into a rigidly structured essay? Luckily, you’re not the first person to be put in this position, and there are a lot of tips and tricks you can try to make sure your essay or story ends up just the right length.

If you find your essay is too long, here is how to shorten your essay:

Remove adverbs and adjectives.

Adverbs and adjectives might seem like they strengthen your writing, but in truth they can bog it down. Remove any unnecessary adverbs and adjectives to trim down your piece.

Shorten your introduction and conclusion.

It’s easy to find yourself rambling in an introduction or conclusion. But remember, these aren’t the key sections of your essay: they’re just window-dressing. Cut down on any areas where you restate arguments you made elsewhere in your paper, so you can use your words where they really count.

Use active rather than passive voice.

Sometimes it can be hard to remember to use active voice in your writing , especially when you’re writing a formal piece. But passive voice can often take up more space than you have to spare. Go through your essay with a critical eye and remove as many instances of passive voice as possible. As a bonus, active voice isn’t just more succinct -- it’s also more effective, meaning you’ll be turning in a stronger piece to your teacher or professor.

Delete transition words or sentences.

Transition phrases might seem essential to the flow of your paper, but you’d be surprised how well your essay fares without them. If you’re pressed for space, try trimming down your transitions, then read through the essay again to see how it the new flow feels.

Tips for Lengthening an Essay

On the flip side, you might find your essay isn’t quite the five or seven pages your professor asked for. If that’s the case, here is how to lengthen your essay:

Add extra supporting evidence or quotations.

Now is a great time to showcase all the research that didn’t make it into the first draft of your paper. Even if you think you’ve already proved your point, add an extra sentence or paragraph to prove it again. Your professor will appreciate how thorough you’ve been, and you’d be surprised how much space a little research will take up. Quotations in particular are a great way to beef up your paper, because special formatting means a couple lines can occupy as much as a paragraph’s worth of space.

Flesh out the conclusion with forward-thinking ideas.

Rather than using the conclusion solely as a place to restate your argument, think about the potential impacts or implications of your paper’s argument. For instance, if your paper argues that the development of solar power is ultimately more cost-effective than traditional fuel sources, use the conclusion to explore what a solar-powered society might look like in the future, or touch on other potential benefits of solar power outside of cost-effectiveness.

Add a counterargument and refutation.

If you’re far short of your target page length, you might need a more substantial addition to your paper. A counterargument and refutation can be just that. Put simply, a counterargument is a paragraph in which you explore what an opponent to your essay might say. That counterargument is then followed by a refutation, or a paragraph in which you explain why your opponent’s argument is wrong. These structures are often used in argumentative and philosophical papers, but can be applied to many different writing forms.

For instance, for that essay about solar power, you might include a paragraph explaining why others might think the up-front cost of solar power makes it too expensive. You could then refute said argument by showing how long-term expenses are still significantly reduced for solar power. In addition to adding length to your essay, a counter argument can be a great way to show readers how deeply you’ve considered the material.

Break up paragraphs.

If all else fails, try breaking up long paragraphs into shorter ones. While this won’t add a ton of length to your paper, it can stretch out your page count just enough to hit your minimum number of pages.

I love the tool. Not only does it detect ACTUAL Al written content, but also writers who write just like Al. Great way to weed out Al and poor writing. Just because content was written by a human doesn't mean they did any better than an Al tool. We had a lot of our writers test positive for Al and they didn't use Al. What was common in all their writing was the lack of original thoughts. It was all regurgitation.

How to Write a 300-Word Essay

Writing a 300-word essay in education is about being brief yet informative. Such tasks check your ability to build arguments and communicate points. Structure it to cover all essay parts and follow the assigned citation style.

300-word essays have a standard structure: an intro, a core, and a conclusion. The body is for organizing and representing the main points. Below you’ll find five techniques to do that.

5 methods of structuring a 300-word paper

  • Essence. Write everything that comes to your mind about the topic. Then, re-read it and point out three main ideas to cover in your essay. Describe them one by one when writing a paper’s body.
  • Three points. Make a list of sub-topics related to your essay’s theme. Then, expand each sub-topic with three more points. Finally, choose three sub-topics with most relevant points to support your thesis. Take them to describe in an essay’s body.
  • 3+1. It involves four steps: State a thesis, introduce it, expand on it, and finish your essay. The last step is the “+1” in the technique’s name. The trick is to write a conclusion first and then continue with other essay parts.
  • Divide. Write each part of your essay separately. Re-read each paragraph once you have it to revise if something looks wrong. When ready, move to another essay part.
  • Simple. Introduce a topic with 12 distinct points, grouping them into 3 blocks with 4 sentences each.

Use this template to structure your 300-word paper. Here’s what to include in each part:

A 300-word essay introduction:

  • Start with introducing your topic.
  • State your thesis (the main idea of your essay).
  • List the main supporting ideas you’ll discuss to prove it.

How to structure body paragraphs:

As a rule, you write three body paragraphs in an essay. Given the restricted length, each should be short and up-to-pont. Please avoid too many transitional words, long descriptions, or complex sentence structures.

Structure essay body paragraphs like this:

  • Write a lead sentence introducing the paragraph’s idea.
  • Explain it: 1-3 sentences.
  • Provide 1-2 examples.

Concluding your 300-word essay:

Restate all the points you covered in an essay. (You can take them from the introduction and paraphrase.) Finish with the food for thought for readers: a statement, a question, etc.

Final tips on writing short essays:

  • Write as you speak; then revise each sentence for language patterns and clarity.
  • What is 300 words in an essay?

  • How many paragraphs is a 300 words essay?

A 300 words essay follows a 5-paragraph structure. The first paragraph goes for an introduction, three — for a body, and the final one — for a conclusion. This rule isn’t strict: Your essay body can be one or two, not three, paragraphs (2). Check the prompt’s guidelines before writing.

  • How many pages is a 300-word essay?

It’s around 1-1.5 pages, depending on the formatting. Font size and spacing may differ from one prompt to another. In general, a 300-word essay is about 0.6 pages if single-spaced and 1.2 pages if double-spaced.

Your Best Essay Length Guide

300-Word Essay

When writing an essay, there are various factors to consider: word count, font size, page formatting, and lots more. Therefore, when you are given an essay with a certain word count, it is best to ask questions to be clear. When the instructions are clear, you will know what to do and how to pattern your writing.

A common question when students are given essays to write, say a 300-word essay, is “how long is a 300 word essay?” This is because sometimes precise and specific instructions needed to write a 300 word essay aren’t given by the teachers or scholarship institutions.

how many pages is a 300 word essay double spaced

Before You Start Writing

You need to take steps before you begin writing a 300-word essay. First of all, this is a short essay, which means you have to compress loads of information without leaving any out. As such, you want to determine the number of pages a 300-word essay would take. In addition, you want to be clear on what information to include and not include.

You should be careful about jumbling words together just to meet the word count of your 300-word essay. It is good that you ask, “how long is a 300 word essay” because the answer to that question guides you on how to structure your article.

How Long Is a300 Word Essay?

In determining the length of a 300-word essay, several things are considered. That includes the type of font you use in writing, the size of the font, the page formatting. Page formatting includes spacing, margins, and so on. If an institution gives the essay, there is usually a set guideline. That is because institutions have standard rules guiding tasks such as writing a 300-word essay. However, if your essay task doesn’t come with more instructions, here are some common questions about the essay structure and format as well as answers to them – you can use them as  your guidelines:

  • How long is a 300 word essay double spaced? A 300-word essay that is double-spaced should be about one and a half A page would typically contain 250 words double spaced and with the normal 12-font size and Times New Roman.
  • How long is a 300 word essay typed? This should be less than one page with single spacing, normal 12-font size, and font type Times New Roman. This is much different when written, depending on your handwriting. In terms of timing, there is no specific answer: it depends on your speed and knowledge.
  • How many paragraphs should my 300-word essay have? A 300-word essay should have three paragraphs altogether. As a rule of thumb, each paragraph in an essay should have 100 to 200 words. However, essays follow a standard structure that breaks them into three for easy reading. We will talk more about the standard structure of essays later.
  • What is the standard structure for paragraphs ? Each paragraph in the essay should contain 5 to 6 sentences of 15 to 20 words per sentence. That is to say, if the paragraph has 100 words, there should be 5 to 6 sentences, and each sentence should be about 15 to 20 words.

Structuring Your 300 Word Essay

All essays follow a standard structure for formality’s sake and easy readability; this structure makes your essay appear neat and intelligent. Your 300-word essay should follow the introduction – body – conclusion format. Now, in a longer essay, say a 1000 word essay or more, the number of paragraphs you’ll accord each section would be longer. For instance, an introduction in a 2000 word essay can take 1 to 2 paragraphs depending on the number of words per paragraph.

However, in a 300-word essay, your introduction is short and cannot take more than a paragraph. The general rule is that the introduction and conclusion are the shortest aspects of an essay, each taking 10%. That means a 300-word essay would have a 30-word introduction and a 30-word conclusion. The body of the 300-word essay would then take the rest of the words.

Technically, a 300-word essay should only have three paragraphs: 1 for introduction, 1 for the conclusion, and 1 for the body. However, that depends on how many words you decide to include in the paragraph. For example, if you make it 100 words per paragraph, that would be two paragraphs for the body and 4 in total.

In conclusion, if the instructions that came with the essay don’t give specifics, you should ask. However, if that is not possible, you can use this guide here; it is standard. Once you can answer the questions of “how long is a 300 word essay”, “how many pages is 300 words?” and other important questions, writing the essay ultimately becomes easy.

We support popular academic fonts like Arial, Times New Roman, and more. Pick your preferred spacing, too: single, 1.5 lines, or double-spaced.

While not every document is structured identically, our calculator provides a highly accurate page estimate for standard academic essays without images or charts.

You can quickly estimate page counts using our easy, free online tool.

Convert Words Counts to Pages

The way a Words to Pages calculator works is simple. It estimates how many pages a given word count would take up based on format settings like font type, font size, and line spacing.

Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

1. User Input

  • Total Number of Words : The user inputs the total word count of their document.
  • Font Choice : The user selects a font type (e.g., Arial, Calibri, Comic Sans MS, Courier Times, New Roman Verdana)
  • Font Size : The user chooses a font size (e.g., 10, 11, 12, 13, 14).
  • Line Spacing : The user selects the line spacing (e.g., single, 1.5 lines, double).

2. Calculation Logic

Using certain formatting settings, the calculator can determine how many words will fit on a standard page.

  • Font Type : Different fonts have different sizes and spacing characteristics. For example, Arial is generally considered a standard and easily readable font.
  • Font Size : Larger font sizes take up more space. It reduces the number of words that can fit on a page.
  • Line Spacing : More spacing between lines means fewer lines per page. Single spacing allows more words per page than double spacing.
  • Standard Page Definition : A standard page is typically defined as an 8.5 x 11-inch page (for the U.S.) or an A4 page (internationally).
  • Average Words Per Page : This value is calculated based on the chosen font, font size, and spacing. It’s an average because the actual word count can vary depending on word length and other factors.

For example, a page with an Arial font size of 12 and single spacing might fit an average of 500 words.

3. Execution of Calculation

  • Once the user inputs their word count and selects their formatting preferences, the calculator uses a formula to estimate the number of pages.
  • This formula is essentially: [ Total Word Count ] / [ Average Words Per Page ]
  • The Average Words Per Page is a pre-calculated value based on the chosen font, font size, and line spacing.

4. Displaying the Result

  • The result (total estimated pages) is then displayed to the user. This is usually rounded up since you can’t have a fraction of a physical page.

Suppose a user inputs 1500 words and chooses Arial font, size 12, with single spacing. If the average words per page for these settings is 500, the calculator will perform the following calculation:

  • 1500 words / 500 words per page = 3 pages

The user would then see “3 pages” as the estimated length of their document.

Words to Page Counter: Converter to calculate Words to Pages

When writing, it is important to ensure that you know the number of words that you are completing in every section. This is more important especially when your number of words is part of the instructions. So, how many words are there per page?

The average and the general number of words on one page is between 275 words to 300 words for a double-spaced page and between 550 words and 600 for a single-spaced page. The variation occurs due to the differences in writing styles among people and the structure of their paragraphing styles.

The best and Free Word to Pages Counter or Calculator

To know the number of words per page or the number of pages for a certain number of words, we created a word-to-page counter for you. This free word-to-page counter will help you keep tabs with the word count you write and the conversion using any font and any spacing.

Number of Words in a Page

Because of the differences in the lengths, I will comprehensively discuss the factors involved and determine the number of words for each. I will also review the various factors that determine the word count to help you meet instructors’ requirements.

How many words are there on a double-spaced page?

Before delving into the number of words on a double-spaced page, it is important to first understand what a double-spaced page is.

In any application that helps you write or edit a document on your computer, tablet, or smartphone, you will be given an option to select the line spacing options. Normally, the options include 1.0, 1.15, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3.0.

Most essays and various documents are usually typed with either 1.0 or 2.0-line spacing options.

#This is where the so-called single-spaced page and double-spaced page options come in. When a page is single-spaced, it means that the 1.0-line spacing option has been used.

On the other hand, if a 2.0-line spacing option has been used, the page is double-spaced.

Now that the issue of single-spaced and double-spaced pages is clear, we can now explore the number of that can fit into a double-spaced page.

The number of words within a double-spaced page is usually between 275 words and 300 words when using standard fonts for academic writing like Times New Roman or Arial.

However, when using large fonts like Arial Black, the number of words will be fewer because they occupy more space within the paragraph.

Similarly, when using smaller fonts, then the number of words will increase in a double-spaced page because the fonts will occupy lesser space in each sentence of your paragraph.

Still, various factors will determine the number of words that can fit into a double-spaced page.

How Many Words are there on a Single-Spaced Page?

During the previous section concerning the number of words that can fit into a double-spaced page, we discussed the factors that determine whether a page is to be considered double or single-spaced.

We found that a single-spaced page uses the 1.0-line spacing option, meaning that the number of lines within each page will increase.

In short, it means that the number of words in a single-spaced page will be double the number of words in a double-spaced page.

Therefore, the number of words on a single-spaced page is between 550 and 600 words if you use the standard fonts and margins.

The reason why the term standard is emphasized is that most students are involved in academic writing and certain standards are used across different institutions.

Read more about an example of how many pages are in 1000 words for more insight.

What determines the Number of words in a Page

1. line spacing.

One of those factors is line spacing options such as adding spaces before or after your paragraphs and removing such spaces between them.

If you add spaces before or after your paragraphs, it means that there will be fewer words within a double-spaced page.

If you remove such spaces before or after each paragraph, then the number of words required to fill your page will increase.

2. Size of the Font

The second factor is the size of the font you are using when creating your word document. It should be noted that this does not refer to the type of font used such as times new roman or Ariel.

It refers to the size of the font you have selected. In most formal word documents such as academic papers or essays, the instructor specifies the size of a specific font to be used.

Normally, the instructor will require size 11 or size 12 depending on the academic discipline or topic.

The smaller the font, the more words will be required to fill a double-spaced page like in the case of size 11.

On the other hand, if the font size is larger like in the case of size 12, then fewer words will be required to fill a similar page.

3. Bold or normal font

Another factor that determines the number of words that can fill a double-spaced page is whether the font is in bold or not. The bold font takes up more space within a page compared to the normal font.

What this means is that there will be fewer words within a normal double-spaced page, and vice versa. When italic fonts are used within a similar double-spaced page, then the number of words will increase because italics tend to compress the font.

4. Caps or Lower case

Uppercase fonts are considerably larger compared to the normal lowercase font. This means that fewer words will be required to fill a double-spaced page.

The margins of the word document will also influence the number of words that are required to fill the same page.

Though the aforementioned factors will affect the number of words required to fill a double-spaced page, it is important to follow your instructor’s specifications concerning the type of font to be used and so on.

You may also decide to follow the standard font type and size within your double-spaced page so that the number of words can remain within the normal range of 275 to 300 words.

A Summary of the Number of Words per Page Calculator

The below list gives an estimation of how several factors, as indicated above, will affect the actual pages when writing your article. The given details are only a guide since it may not be true in all cases. Let these examples act as inspirations when converting pages into words.

  • Using double-spacing, 500 words are two pages. But when using single-spacing, 500 words are 1 page.

Number of Pages

One common question that arises when tackling an assignment is, "How many pages are 1200 words?" Understanding this is crucial, especially when planning your writing process. The number of pages in 1200 words can vary based on several factors, including spacing, font size, and font type. Typically, academic assignments recommend using Times New Roman or Arial, size twelve.

Let's delve into the specifics. Assuming we're using Times New Roman or Arial, size twelve, a 1200-word essay typically corresponds to a mid-length high school level or freshman college assignment. For a single-spaced essay, 1200 words equate to approximately two pages plus two-fifths of an additional page (2⅖). In contrast, a double-spaced assignment doubles the number of pages, resulting in approximately four pages plus four-fifths of another page (4⅘). It's essential to maintain a one-inch margin on all sides to ensure standardized formatting.

If you've already written your essay and are unsure about its length before formatting, there are numerous online word counter applications available to assist you. These tools require input such as font type, font size, number of words, and spacing. They quickly provide you with the estimated number of pages your document will span.

Using a words - to - pages converter to figure out how many pages culminating for your academic essay or research paper - You can calculate with different font styles and sizes. This tool is useful when converting the number of words to number of pages online and definitely free. The tool rounds off any pages that aren’t full pages meaning if your words should convert to something like 4.2 pages, automatically the tool rounds this off to 5 pages since your professor will expect you to submit full pages and not a partially formatted paper.

Whenever you receive an assignment from your professor, one key requirement is that you write a certain number of pages. We all know that different fonts and font sizes may result in a different number of pages despite the number of words being the same. It is, therefore, essential to know how many words make a page. When doing an assignment, there are a number of words and pages that appear at the foot of your document. Despite these numbers being accurate, they do change when you format the material according to the specifications given by either the professor or the body that will be receiving your paper. Before we dive into words to pages conversion, we first need to understand why being able to convert the number of words to pages is essential.

Why is it important to know how to convert words to pages?

•    When writing, we are guided by the rules put in place by the individual(s) who are going to assess the assignment. As already mentioned, one fundamental rule is to meet the number of words/pages requested. By knowing how to convert this, you will be able to meet the requirements of the assignment partially. This will get you closer to achieving the goals of writing the document in the first place.

•    You will be able to develop your writing skills and track your writing record. By knowing the number of words required to write the specified number of pages before you even begin to write, you will be able to keep track of your writing as you write.

•    Sometimes you may need someone else to handle your assignments (precisely, paper mills). When you order these papers, they will ask you to specify the number of pages you need the assignment to be. Without the proper understanding, you may receive a document that has the said number of pages, but a closer look at it will reveal that you have been ripped off. Knowing how to calculate the number of words that make up a page under specific conditions will go a long way to ensuring that you are not conned.

•    Ensure you get the value for your money. Most paper mills will tell you that they will give you the value for your money, but if you are not keen enough, the small details like the number of words matching up with the number of pages will escape you. As a result, you might find yourself paying for the services and getting less than you deserve.

•    You may also save yourself a lot of money. Lack of understanding on how to convert words into pages may lead you to consult people to do the conversion and formatting for you. In return, you are required to pay a certain fee. Knowing how to do the conversion and formatting all by yourself will save you a lot of money.

Key elements in converting words to pages

1.    Font- Fonts vary by size. For example, 300 words in double-spaced, font size 12 in Arial font will result in 2 pages. However, when the font changes to Times New Roman (TNR) and the other conditions remain, the result is 1 page.

2.    Font-size- The font size plays a crucial role in determining the number of pages. Small font sizes will require more words and vice versa. It is essential to know the right font size so as not to compromise the document’s readability.

3.    Line spacing – Like the font size, line spacing largely affects the number of pages for a specific number of words. Using the same example above, let’s put this into perspective. When using the Arial font, size 12, this will result in two pages for a double spaced document and 1 page for a single-spaced document.

4.    Indentation- Indentation affects the words to pages conversion the same way as spacing does. In a word document, there is the option of indenting a sentence on both sides of the special indentation (first line or hanging). When all these are used, the number of pages increase without necessarily increasing the number of words.

5.    Margins- Margins affect the number of pages in that; unlike indentation that reduces the number of words that can be contained in a sentence, margin minimizes the size of a page.

Ways of converting words to pages.

There are two ways of converting words to pages. These are manual conversion and words to pages converter.

1.    Manual conversion

Manual conversion is a long process of converting words into pages. The process requires you to write the entire document, and then format it according to the specified instructions. After that, you can be able to view the number of pages you have written to determine whether they meet the required amount. If the number goes beyond the specified, you are required to edit out the unnecessary information, which might take you a lot of time. If the number of pages is less, you are required to research more content in order to fill the gap.

2.    Words to pages converter

Unlike manual conversion, a Word to pages conversion software allows you to know how many words to write in order to meet the specific pages even before you start writing. This is made possible through software that asks you to specify the conditions of your paper. Once you define the conditions, the software then goes ahead to displace the number of pages. These conditions are;

•    Font

•    Font size

•    Number of words

•    Spacing

Above are just the basic conditions common for most software available online. Some may ask you for more detail, but the answers to the questions will be provided by the instructions given for the assignment.

Words to pages converter software help you predetermine the number of words to write before you even start. When formatting your paper, you should know that the cover page, abstract, and the reference pages are never counted as pages. Therefore, when writing and formatting your essay, the final paper should have the specified number of pages plus the cover page, the abstract, and the reference page if requested.

How Many Pages is 1000 Words

Ever stared at a blank page wondering just how long 1000 words really is?

Spoiler: it depends.

Formatting, font choice, and spacing can turn your essay into a quick read or a mini-novella. In this post, we’ll break down the magic (and madness) behind word count, giving you the insider tips to nail your next writing project.

Ready to conquer the page? Let’s go!

Font Margins Line Spacing Indents and Paragraph Breaks Different Types of Content Frequently Asked Questions How Long Does it Take to Write 1000 Words? How Long Does it Take to Read 1000 Words? What does the number of pages depend on.

How Many Pages is 1000 Words

You’ve guessed it. The number of pages 1000 words would occupy depends on multiple factors. Nevertheless the simple answer is around 2 pages . This comes with a bunch of dependencies. Did you include any fancy formatting? What about images, graphs and tables? Let’s see the different scenarios of the amount of pages you can expect your content to take up.

Handwriting or Typing?

Even though most writing nowadays is done digitally on a computer or a smart device, there are still those hardcore writers who prefer to do it by hand. While this is great for jotting down the creative sparks that cross your mind, most writers use a digital word processor . Anyhow, if you prefer writing by hand, it can be a little challenging to say exactly how many pages 1000 handwritten words would take.

The general rule of thumb is that handwriting takes up around twice as much space as a 12 pt Times New Roman text. Therefore 1000 words written by hand would take up roughly 4 pages . There are a few more things you should consider, though.

  • What’s your pen’s nib size? If you’re using a sharpie or a thicker pen, these 4 pages could grow to 4 and a half or even 5, depending on how generous you are with space when writing.
  • What’s your handwriting? Do you like taking up all the space available? Or are you more of the “make every line count” type of writer? In case your handwriting is bulky you should also take that into consideration. Additionally, the font of your handwriting may add or remove some pages from your final piece.
  • Do you cross things out? This is an obvious one. The more words you cross out, the more space you would need.

To sum up, 1000 words of single spaced handwritten text will generally take around 3,5 to 4,5 pages. Double spaced this goes up to 7-9.

Enough about hand writing word count. Let’s talk typing.

Here things are a bit simpler. As we said in the start, 1000 words of typed text will take up around 2 pages as the rule of thumb here is 500 words per page. If you like double spacing your work, this will double at around 4 pages (or roughly 250 words per page).

As with handwriting, typing your text can be done in a number of different fonts. As you also know, you can additionally adjust the font size for your text. The 2 pages per 1000 words that we previously mentioned would be true for a standard size 12 Times New Roman text. If you go down to a size 10 font, this would decrease them by around 1/3 of a page.

If, on the other hand, you need a piece of clearly visible content, and increase the font size to a 20 or even a 24, this would drop the average number of words that can fit in a single page. A size 20 would need 3 and 1/3 pages and a 24 would stretch out to 4 pages.

In addition the different font types can take up a different amount of space, even if the same size.

Here you can see how much space a sample text uses when typed regularly with no italics and bolding.

This is how much space a piece of text with the same number of characters would use up when bolded.

While both of these pieces of text are exactly 99 characters long, even when using the same font, they could take up a different amount of space on your page, depending on the specific letters you’re using.

How Many Pages is 1000 Words

The next thing you can personalize when writing an essay or an article are the margins. Understandably, increasing their size from the standard 1″ margins will mean that the same amount of words will take up more space on a page. On the contrary, if you decrease the margins you could write more words on a single page.

Line Spacing

Most writing software will let you change the spacing between the lines. This is especially useful for textbooks, manuscripts and academic papers. Bigger spacing between the lines could give a teacher, an editor or an academic supervisor the space they need to leave notes.

Naturally, the larger spacing you set up, the fewer words will fit per page. With 1.5 spacing 1000 words will generally take around 3 pages and with double line spacing, this would go up to 4 .

Indents and Paragraph Breaks

Just like line spacing, adding paragraph breaks or indents, can increase the amount of pages 1000 words would take up.

Generally an indent (added using the tab-key), will let you start typing around an inch deeper into the line. It may come to good use when you want the next section of a text to be a part of a poem or if you simply want to have it formatted differently.

A paragraph break (hitting the enter button twice) will leave an empty row in your text. Again, there are a whole lot of different cases when you could use this.

The main advantage is the ease of reading and understanding this will give your reader. If you are writing a fictional story with a lot of descriptions of the environment, a paragraph break could be used to differentiate between the different rooms or objects. If you are working on an academic paper, it would serve to show the introduction of a new idea or the start of a new theory.

Different Types of Content

One of the key things you should consider when writing a piece of text is what it will be used for. A page of a standard word processor document comes in one size and a web page in another.

As we previously mentioned, 1000 words of a standard document would take up around 2 pages. If you are writing new articles, a blog post or web page copy, things could look a lot different. Here you could have more freedom when it comes to fonts, formatting and different types of content (images, links and charts). This is why you should also keep in mind where your piece will go.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to write 1000 words.

As with most questions in the article, the easiest answer is it depends. If you are working on your bachelor or master’s thesis, it may take days. In case you’re writing a story, the answer may be forever.

Generally speaking, though, it should take around 4-6 hours to write a decent piece. This is with no editing of course. Editing included you can add up to an hour to the sum.

How Long Does it Take to Read 1000 Words?

It will take an average reader around 1.5 to 3.5 minutes depending on the complexity of the text.

Is 1000 Words a lot for a Paper?

It depends on the paper. If you are in high school or in the first semesters of a university degree, it may be enough. In any case, check with your teacher or lecturer to make sure.

How Much Should You Write per Day?

Most writers claim they usually write around 1000 words per day. This can vary, though, depending on how inspired you are feeling, how busy you are with side projects and – of course – how interested you are in what you are writing about.

How to Start Writing Faster?

Generally we would recommend you do not aim to write faster. This will likely decrease the quality of what you are creating.

However if you want to improve your writing speed here are a few things you can try to:

  • Set goals. Setting writing goals and rewarding yourself as you reach them may push you to write faster.
  • Time your writing. Timing yourself while you write will give you valuable information on how long it takes you to write a certain number of words. You can use that information as a starting point and try to beat it later.
  • Skip some sections. If you are finding a specific section of your paper, story or novel tedious to write, you can skip it and complete it at a later time. Just make sure you don’t forget to go back to it.
  • Edit at a later stage. Most writers will agree that the magic happens when you edit, not with your first draft. This is why, to increase your writing speed you might want to try putting off the editing for later.
  • Write with a friend. Just like doing sports with a buddy will help you stay motivated and push yourself harder, this can also be true for writing. Keep yourself accountable for your work.

How Many Words Should a Novel Be?

An average 300-400 page novel is around 70 000-100 000 words. You can keep it slightly shorter if you are writing a nonfiction book (60 000-90 000).

How Do You Choose the Right Word Processor?

This is a tough one. The best word processor is the one that suits all your needs. You can see what your considerations should be in our beginner’s guide to word processing .

Writing can be challenging. Especially if the topic of your work is not something you are particularly interested in reaching a mere 1000 words can be a pain. This is why it is always important to make sure you are using a writing software that suits your needs and has all the writing features you might want.
