The Program in Creative Writing offers Princeton undergraduates the opportunity to craft original work under the guidance of some of today’s most respected practicing writers including Michael Dickman , Katie Farris , Aleksandar Hemon , A.M. Homes , Ilya Kaminsky , Christina Lazaridi , Yiyun Li , Paul Muldoon , and Patricia Smith .

Small workshop courses , averaging eight to ten students, provide intensive feedback and instruction for both beginners and advanced writers, and each year 25 to 30 seniors work individually with a member of the faculty on independent creative work: a novel, a screenplay, or a collection of short stories, poems or translations. Writers of national and international distinction visit campus throughout the year to participate in the Althea Ward Clark W’21 Reading Series and to discuss their work. The Lewis Center presents the biennial Princeton Poetry Festival drawing poets from around the world. The C.K. Williams Reading Series puts Princeton seniors at the podium alongside a lineup of established guest writers curated by seniors in the program. The Leonard Milberg collections and Princeton’s unparalleled library and archives also provide world-class opportunities for the study of contemporary literature.

M.F.A. – Creative Writing

Master of fine arts (m.f.a.) in creative writing.

Every writer has a story to tell—at Monmouth, we give you the tools to bring it to life. With our full-residency 48-credit M.A./M.F.A. dual degree program in Creative Writing, you will prepare for your dream career in the literary world by training directly with published, award-winning faculty. Through flexible course offerings , you can choose to study fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, and may also pursue interests in crime novels, thrillers, romance, fantasy, and more. Our intensive and pragmatic program gives you an advantage over your peers by focusing on developing your craft, your network, and your resume. After completing their 30-credit M.A. in English with a Creative Writing concentration , Monmouth’s M.F.A. students will immerse themselves in an additional 18 credits of intensive creative writing study that includes the completion of a book-length Creative Thesis . Students will also benefit from personalized learning, advanced craft seminars, networking opportunities, and rigorous career preparation, including a publishing seminar and the opportunity to gain teaching experience by taking a course on teaching composition, working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, or teaching as an adjunct professor during the program. You are eligible to participate in the M.F.A. program if you have obtained a Master of Arts (M.A.) in English from Monmouth University and demonstrate a proficiency for creative writing through a thesis or equivalent work. Creative Writing

Creative writing degree and program.

The Creative Writing Program is part of the English Department and offers workshops in mixed genre, fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and screenwriting. Our instructors are accomplished authors, poets, and artists who enjoy working with students.

Creative Writing majors can earn the Humanities A.A. degree with a Creative Writing option. The program has articulation agreements with numerous schools inside and outside of New Jersey, such as Montclair University, Rutgers University, the New School in NYC, and Goddard College in Vermont.

In addition to classes, the program includes a monthly Visiting Writers Series, a student Creative Writing Club, and an award-winning student magazine called Collage. In the spring, students are invited to participate in a capstone student reading and celebration of their creative work.

Creative Writing Option, Humanities, A.A.

This option provides the writing skills and general studies to establish a foundation in creative writing across genres with some depth in specific genres and will prepare students for transfer to writing programs at the four year college level for further study. It will also prepare students for positions in writing and publishing such as writer, editor, proofreader, editorial staff positions in creative fields such as publishing, advertising, and public relations as well as a creativity worker such as author. Students interested in pursuing a BFA, MFA or PhD in Creative Writing will benefit the most from this Option, but general English majors may be interested as well.

Transfer Opportunities

Transfer Agreements by Academic Program:  Articulation Agreements are formal agreements between Brookdale and other colleges and universities. These agreements define how the courses you complete at Brookdale will apply to your future bachelor’s degree when you transfer into a baccalaureate program.

Creative Writing BA Program Overview

Emphasizing the creative community as an essential element of any creative endeavor, the Creative Writing Department features an energetic and engaging award-winning faculty. Published and active in their fields—they are dedicated to providing the one-on-one availability that distinguishes an NEC education. With a focus on individual transformation, the bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing program bolsters and broadens existing areas of interest, as opposed to shepherding students toward a singular aesthetic. The result is a knowledge-based, experiential course of study with an eye on blossoming rather than funneling.

The goal of the Creative Writing BA at New England College is to prepare students for a professional writing career or graduate work in the creative arts.

Students will approach creative writing as a craft‐based discipline rooted in the study of literature and writing. Through genre workshops and literature courses, students will gain the analytical, critical, and creative skills to develop an informed practice of craft, resulting in the production of original works grounded in the historical and theoretical knowledge of the discipline. In this context, the Creative Writing curriculum emphasizes the authenticity and integrity of public voice.

Jennifer Militello Named New Hampshire’s Next Poet Laureate

Militello’s five-year term as Poet Laureate begins in April 2024. She will serve as an ambassador for poets in the Granite State and elevate the visibility and value of poetry in New Hampshire.

Andrew Morgan is a poet and fiction writer who has been teaching at New England College for the last 15 years. He has been the recipient of a Slovenian Writer’s Association Fellowship which sponsored a month long writing residency in the country’s capital city of Ljubljana and his recent work can be found in magazines such as Conduit , Stride , Fairy Tale Review , Pleiades , Divine Magnet , Post Road , and New World Writing . His first book, Month of Big Hands was published by Natural History Press in 2013. Morgan teaches in both the undergraduate as well as graduate creative writing programs.

Her work appears in such journals as  American Poetry Review ,  The Nation ,  The New Republic ,  The Paris Review ,  Ploughshares ,  POETRY , and  Tin House , as well as in  Best American Poetry ,  Best New Poets , and Poem-a-Day: 365 Poems for Every Occasion. She has been awarded the Barbara Bradley Award, the Yeats Poetry Prize, the Ruskin Art Club Poetry Award, the Betty Gabehart Prize, and the 49th Parallel Award, as well as grants and fellowships from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund, Writers at Work, and the Millay Colony for the Arts.

Militello taught at Brown University, University of Massachusetts Lowell, and Rhode Island School of Design before joining the faculty at New England College. She lives in Goffstown, New Hampshire.

Bio Maura MacNeil is a professor, writer, and editor who is the author of the poetry collections. Her poetry, prose, and critical writing have been published and anthologized both nationally and internationally in numerous publications. She is the founder and editor of Off the Margins, a website “that pushes the boundaries of language, conventional form, blended genre, and prose flash, featuring women writers who fearlessly tell the truth and risk vulnerability to give voice to their experience.” Her poetry has been nominated four times for the prestigious Pushcart Award. She was a founding member of the Stone Bridge Poetry Project and co-founder and editor of Entelechy International: A Journal of Contemporary Ideas and currently serves on the board of the Monadnock Writers’ Group. She is committed to community-based creative collaboration and is an active presenter for the NH Humanities to Go Program with her program titled “Family, Memory, Place: Writing Family Stories.”

Montclair State’s creative writing program offers courses in fiction, poetry, drama, creative nonfiction, screenwriting, and memoir. Bring out the best in your writing!

Courses of Study

New! Now you can major in English with a creative writing concentration . Take any four creative writing workshops and have them count toward your degree in English. Try fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, memoir, and more! Screenwriting and playwriting workshops are cross­‑listed through the School of the Arts.

The English department also offers a creative writing minor open to all undergraduates: six courses for a total of eighteen semester hours. Students choose one of two main genres of focus, either fiction or poetry, and go up the levels of beginning, intermediate, and advanced workshops in that field, ending with a capstone project. In addition, students take two workshops in other genres, as well as a literature course in their chosen genre.

Please note that the Creative Writing concentration cannot be combined with dual degree programs or with other concentrations in English, but the Creative Writing minor can be combined with those programs.

Students may take an individual workshop, starting at the beginning 200-level. To add the minor, students must fill out a change of major/minor form , obtainable on the Registrar’s site , and bring the signed form to the English department office at 468 Dickson Hall. Description This program of study is designed for students who are interested in cultivating the strong writing skills that writing careers will require. The program includes courses conducive to transferring into a baccalaureate degree in English and/or Creative Writing, while keeping pathways open for baccalaureate degrees that emphasize more professional writing as well. Accordingly, the program is structured so students can (1) deepen their skills through scaffolded coursework and (2) broaden their experience with multiple genres and career pathways. The program culminates in a capstone course that familiarizes students with submission processes, transfer opportunities, and publishing/reading venues both in Rochester and around the country, preparing them for the next stage of their personal/professional lives as writers.

Program Learning Outcomes 1. Analyze and evaluate written creative texts across multiple genres; 2. Revise and edit their own original, written, creative texts across multiple genres; 3. Produce their own professional-quality original written creative work; 4. Submit their own original written creative work to professional venues. 5. The Creative Writing certificate program will provide students with a focus in the written creative arts including screenwriting and playwriting, the writing of creative nonfiction, poetry, and fiction, and writing for children and young adults. This may culminate in a capstone in one or multiple genres.

Program Goals

By completing this certificate, students will achieve the following learning goals:

• Demonstrate critical knowledge of a wide range of creative writing and a variety of diverse cultural viewpoints;
• Demonstrate expertise in critical analysis of professional works of literature as writers (reading as writers);
• Demonstrate knowledge of genres and aesthetics by learning to write well in many forms. This includes a basic command of grammar;
• Demonstrate intellectual discipline by narrowing one’s creative focus and energies to produce the most effective work while meeting deadlines and managing time effectively; and
• Demonstrate habits of creativity in the forms of creative problem solving, experimentation, inventiveness, and revision.

Completion Requirements

• A minimum of 12 semester credits must be completed at ARCC.
• A minimum grade of C must be earned in all program and additional requirements.
• All course requirements must be complete before a certificate will be awarded.
