We aim to be the web's best source for unscrambling letters to play a word game (and for puzzle solvers). The best at finding playable word ideas (such as scrabble words, anagrams, and similar word games). We plan to add a quiz and other fun games you can play on your phone or tablet as well. We even built a game about unscrambling stories about a famous event in England (read the notes).

While we have a world famous word scramble solver, we actually got our start as a hangman solver tool. Our first real win was building a fast pattern matching engine for hangman puzzle solving. It can find missing letter ideas and run them through a word generator. Our word finder runs through the various letter combination options to find possible words. We did a few cool things to serve the result of a query as a pagable english word list. From there, you can guess the correct word (our words are valid word ideas; we use the same dictionary as most mobile word game sites). Some people also call our word unscrambler tool a jumble solver .

From there, we worked to become the best word solver site for mobile phone users. The list loads quickly and efficiently. While we don't use the scrabble dictionary from Hasbro, we use the same word list a lot of mobile phone games use.

We also have a word search solver for Boggle grids. This tool finds words from the letter grid (we have 4x4, 5x5, 6x6 grids - all the popular sizes of Boggle style games). So if you need to find word combinations for that kind of puzzle, you know who to call...

So while you may have come here looking for the word speech (or phrase, rather), we have far more to show you when you're ready. But never far, we'll just rest for now and read a book. We're ready to add renewed meaning to your life (beyond money) or spice to your next trip to Canada. Until then, remember our scrabble cheat tools. Or grab a random word puzzle and call it a day.

Also, there are words that sound the same but are spelled using different letters and have totally unrelated definitions. Therefore, having our Word Unscrambler at your fingertips can be a real plus when you’re attempting to sort out what words the mixed-up letters reveal.

6 Tips and Tricks to Unscramble Words

There are a number of tips and tricks that can be beneficial to unscramble words from jumbled letters. Everyone has their favorites ─ maybe tried and true ones that have worked for them in the past to make words or some that they find quick and easy to use. Following are some tips and tricks that we suggest to help you find the answers to the puzzle of letters you have before you.

  • Separate the consonants from the vowels.
  • Try to match various consonants with vowels to see what you come up with. All words need to have vowels. Also, while you can have a word with just one vowel, such as “A” or “I”, consonants cannot stand on their own.
  • Look for short words to start with such as those with 2 or 3 letters. Then, find out if you can lengthen these by pluralizing them or adding any letters you have that can change the tense.
  • Pick our any prefixes or suffixes that can extend the length of the words you come up with.
  • Play with a pencil and paper to create a list of possible words. Make sure to check the spelling to ensure that you haven’t just made up a non-existent word!
  • If you’re playing a word game with tiles, move them around to see if a word materializes when you look at different letter combinations.

Word Unscrambler

Use the Word Unscrambler tool above to find every possible combination of words from letters or words that you enter into the input box. You can use the tool as a cheat for games like scrabble, WWF, Jumble, Literati, and much more. To use our word unscrambler, first enter in all your letters. You can use "?"s for unknown or blank tiles. You can also force the unscrambler to only show results with specific letters in the beginning, middle or end of the word. Use the advanced options for this. For instance if you are building off a word that ends in the letter "T," and you want your word to start with a "T," you can enter T in the "Begins With" box.

You can also choose to sort by Scrabble Point Values or WWF Point Values . This will tell you the most valuable plays you can make on your board. Each result links to The Word Finder dictionary so you can see the definition of the words you are about to play. We also have a Draw Something Help and a Scramble With Friends Tool that will allow you to achieve higher scores in those games.

Our Word Finder Tool searches our database of words from the SOWPODS dictionary that both Scrabble and WWF are based upon. It also includes words that were added by the creators of the both games such as "texting." In some very rare occasions, there will be a word that is returned which is not accepted by Scrabble or WWF. Typically this is because Scrabble has chosen to remove the word because of its negative influence. We will refrain from posting sample words here because they can often be vulgar. If you do click on the word you can see our definitions, or you can use an external dictionary .

  • Childhood apraxia of speech

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a rare speech disorder. Children with this disorder have trouble controlling their lips, jaws and tongues when speaking.

In CAS , the brain has trouble planning for speech movement. The brain isn't able to properly direct the movements needed for speech. The speech muscles aren't weak, but the muscles don't form words the right way.

To speak correctly, the brain has to make plans that tell the speech muscles how to move the lips, jaw and tongue. The movements usually result in accurate sounds and words spoken at the proper speed and rhythm. CAS affects this process.

CAS is often treated with speech therapy. During speech therapy, a speech-language pathologist teaches the child to practice the correct way to say words, syllables and phrases.

Children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) may have a variety of speech symptoms. Symptoms vary depending on a child's age and the severity of the speech problems.

CAS can result in:

  • Babbling less or making fewer vocal sounds than is typical between the ages of 7 to 12 months.
  • Speaking first words late, typically after ages 12 to 18 months old.
  • Using a limited number of consonants and vowels.
  • Often leaving out sounds when speaking.
  • Using speech that is hard to understand.

These symptoms are usually noticed between ages 18 months and 2 years. Symptoms at this age may indicate suspected CAS . Suspected CAS means a child may potentially have this speech disorder. The child's speech development should be watched to determine if therapy should begin.

Children usually produce more speech between ages 2 and 4. Signs that may indicate CAS include:

  • Vowel and consonant distortions.
  • Pauses between syllables or words.
  • Voicing errors, such as "pie" sounding like "bye."

Many children with CAS have trouble getting their jaws, lips and tongues to the correct positions to make a sound. They also may have a hard time moving smoothly to the next sound.

Many children with CAS also have language problems, such as reduced vocabulary or trouble with word order.

Some symptoms may be unique to children with CAS , which helps to make a diagnosis. However, some symptoms of CAS are also symptoms of other types of speech or language disorders. It's hard to diagnose CAS if a child has only symptoms that are found both in CAS and in other disorders.

Some characteristics, sometimes called markers, help distinguish CAS from other types of speech disorders. Those associated with CAS include:

  • Trouble moving smoothly from one sound, syllable or word to another.
  • Groping movements with the jaw, lips or tongue to try to make the correct movement for speech sounds.
  • Vowel distortions, such as trying to use the correct vowel but saying it incorrectly.
  • Using the wrong stress in a word, such as pronouncing "banana" as "BUH-nan-uh" instead of "buh-NAN-uh."
  • Using equal emphasis on all syllables, such as saying "BUH-NAN-UH."
  • Separation of syllables, such as putting a pause or gap between syllables.
  • Inconsistency, such as making different errors when trying to say the same word a second time.
  • Having a hard time imitating simple words.
  • Voicing errors, such as saying "down" instead of "town."

Other speech disorders sometimes confused with CAS

Some speech sound disorders often get confused with CAS because some of the symptoms may overlap. These speech sound disorders include articulation disorders, phonological disorders and dysarthria.

A child with an articulation or phonological disorder has trouble learning how to make and use specific sounds. Unlike in CAS , the child doesn't have trouble planning or coordinating the movements to speak. Articulation and phonological disorders are more common than CAS .

Articulation or phonological speech errors may include:

  • Substituting sounds. The child might say "fum" instead of "thumb," "wabbit" instead of "rabbit" or "tup" instead of "cup."
  • Leaving out final consonants. A child with CAS might say "duh" instead of "duck" or "uh" instead of "up."
  • Stopping the airstream. The child might say "tun" instead of "sun" or "doo" instead of "zoo."
  • Simplifying sound combinations. The child might say "ting" instead of "string" or "fog" instead of "frog."

Dysarthria is a speech disorder that occurs because the speech muscles are weak. Making speech sounds is hard because the speech muscles can't move as far, as quickly or as strongly as they do during typical speech. People with dysarthria may also have a hoarse, soft or even strained voice. Or they may have slurred or slow speech.

Dysarthria is often easier to identify than CAS . However, when dysarthria is caused by damage to areas of the brain that affect coordination, it can be hard to determine the differences between CAS and dysarthria.

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) has a number of possible causes. But often a cause can't be determined. There usually isn't an observable problem in the brain of a child with CAS .

However, CAS can be the result of brain conditions or injury. These may include a stroke, infections or traumatic brain injury.

CAS also may occur as a symptom of a genetic disorder, syndrome or metabolic condition.

CAS is sometimes referred to as developmental apraxia. But children with CAS don't make typical developmental sound errors and they don't grow out of CAS . This is unlike children with delayed speech or developmental disorders who typically follow patterns in speech and sounds development but at a slower pace than usual.

Risk factors

Changes in the FOXP2 gene appear to increase the risk of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and other speech and language disorders. The FOXP2 gene may be involved in how certain nerves and pathways in the brain develop. Researchers continue to study how changes in the FOXP2 gene may affect motor coordination and speech and language processing in the brain. Other genes also may impact motor speech development.

Complications

Many children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) have other problems that affect their ability to communicate. These problems aren't due to CAS , but they may be seen along with CAS .

Symptoms or problems that are often present along with CAS include:

  • Delayed language. This may include trouble understanding speech, reduced vocabulary, or not using correct grammar when putting words together in a phrase or sentence.
  • Delays in intellectual and motor development and problems with reading, spelling and writing.
  • Trouble with gross and fine motor movement skills or coordination.
  • Trouble using communication in social interactions.

Diagnosing and treating childhood apraxia of speech at an early stage may reduce the risk of long-term persistence of the problem. If your child experiences speech problems, have a speech-language pathologist evaluate your child as soon as you notice any speech problems.

'The eyes of the world are upon you': Eisenhower's D-Day order inspires 80 years later

Gen. eisenhower's order of the day on june 6,1944 is among history's most inspiring military addresses. "the eyes of the world are upon you," read the order, given to troops ahead of the invasion..

In addition to overseeing plans for the D-Day invasion, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower also spent months writing a message to encourage troops at the outset of the invasion.

Eisenhower's Order of the Day , which he had begun writing in February 1944, started off with, "You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months.

"The eyes of the world are upon you," continued the order, copies of which were given to the 175,000 member expeditionary force on the eve of the invasion as they boarded ships, planes and otherwise prepared for combat, according to the  National Archives .

"The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world," it read.

Return to Normandy: On D-Day, they changed the world. 80 years later, an incredible journey takes them back.

Eisenhower also recorded a  radio broadcast version and a message to be broadcast to those living in German-held Europe. It started off with “People of Western Europe! A landing has been made this morning on the coast of France …"

In this address, Eisenhower also instructed “patriots” outside of recognized resistance groups to continue "passive resistance," but he added, "do not needlessly endanger your lives; wait until I give you the signal to rise and strike the enemy," wrote  Tim Rives , the deputy director and supervisory archivist of the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, Kansas.

SUPREME HEADQUARTERSALLIED EXPEDITIONARY FORCE

Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

The dramatic story of Pointe du Hoc, the backdrop to Biden's D-Day anniversary speech

President Biden’s itinerary for commemorating D-Day’s 80th anniversary in France includes giving a speech on Friday at a Normandy site called Pointe du Hoc.

The 100-foot cliff juts out over the Omaha and Utah beaches, where thousands of U.S. troops landed on June 6, 1944, as Allied forces stormed the coast and, ultimately, turned the tide of World War II in their favor.

World War II veteran Gene Kleindl, age 102, from Rockford, Ill., receives a kiss from Chantell Boivin while leaving the Normandy American Cemetery on June 4 in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. Kleindl, a medic in the U.S. Army's 90th Infantry Division, arrived on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.

To mark D-Day, Biden will deliver a defense of democracy that hits on campaign themes

Pointe du Hoc didn’t only overlook the historic landings and battles happening on shore. Its craggy edges were themselves the site of one of the invasion’s most daring operations.

The occupying German forces had established a defensive position atop the cliff, stationing several long-range guns that posed a major threat to the Allied troops coming ashore.

A group of 225 U.S. Army Rangers — led by then-Lt. Col. James Earl Rudder — was tasked with destroying those guns. But they had to scale the cliff to get to them.

The mission that ensued has been memorialized with a granite monument , depicted (though not entirely accurately ) in the war epic The Longest Day and now honored in milestone anniversary speeches by two U.S. presidents, 40 years apart.

The site, located some 7 miles west of Normandy American Cemetery, has experienced erosion over time and even lost a chunk of its outcrop in a 2022 landslide . But its monument and bunkers remain ever-popular attractions for Normandy visitors.

Pointe du Hoc endures as a symbol of “tenacity, combat resilience, leadership, sacrifice [and] teamwork”, in the words of Mike Bell, executive director of the Jenny Craig Institute for the Study of War and Democracy at the National WWII Museum.

“Here’s what these citizen soldiers can achieve, and achieve it, in this case, to begin the liberation,” he told NPR, “achieve it for the ends of ultimately freeing the oppressed peoples of Europe and trying to build a more safe and secure world.”

The history — and significance — of Pointe du Hoc

The first few dozen Rangers arrived at the base of the cliff, somewhat delayed and waterlogged, just after 7 a.m.

“They have some extension ladders they got from the fire department, and then they have some grappling hooks with ropes that they shoot out of these little rocket studs,” Bell said. “And then they start climbing the cliffs under enemy fire.”

It took about 30 minutes for the Rangers to battle their way to the top.

“The ropes might be cut and so they’ll have to kind of get over to another rope, or the ladders were pushed down,” Bell said. “It’s a pretty amazing kind of story of tenacity and doggedness and teamwork.”

D-Day veteran and Ambassador for the British Normandy Memorial Ken Hay, 98, who served with the 4th Dorset Regiment, speaks to children during a visit to Rush Green Primary School in Dagenham, England, on Monday, May 20, 2024, ahead of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

As their time runs short, D-Day veterans try to keep their memories alive for others

After the Rangers reached the summit, they cleared out the bunkers and located the five guns, which Bell said had been pushed back into the trees as Germans sought to improve their position.

Using thermite grenades, they destroyed the guns and radioed "mission accomplished" — all by 9 a.m.

“Kind of a claim to fame is this is the first unit on D-Day — major unit — that can report that it’s achieved its objectives,” Bell added. “Whereas the guys getting up Omaha Beach, it'll be hours before they're up over the bluffs and achieve their objectives.”

But that wasn’t the end of their saga.

The Rangers faced fierce counterattacks by the Germans and spent the next two days engaged in combat.

By the time they were relieved by troops from Omaha Beach on June 8, Bell said, 77 were killed and only 90 of the original 225 were “still able to bear arms.”

There’s no exact count of how many U.S. lives the mission at Pointe du Hoc helped save, though Bell said there would have been nearly 5,000 ships in the range of the Germans’ artillery.

More than a dozen individual Rangers would go on to receive the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second-highest award for military valor. Rudder's battalion was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for heroism .

Bell said Rudder’s own reflections best encapsulate the inspired reaction to the operation.

The lieutenant colonel — who later became president of Texas A&M University and, eventually, the entire A&M system — returned to the site with his teenage son years after the war.

“Will you tell me how we did this?” he pondered, according to the Warfare History Network . “Anybody would be a fool to try this. It was crazy then, and it’s crazy now.”

Ronald Reagan gave a speech there on the 40th D-Day anniversary

A crowd of mostly men listens as Ronald Reagan speaks at a podium in front of a granite monument on a clifftop overlooking the water.

Decades later, President Ronald Reagan commemorated the 40th anniversary of D-Day on-site with a rousing speech about the “boys of Pointe du Hoc.”

Reagan had marked the anniversary at Omaha and Utah Beaches. But senior White House staff wanted him to speak at the cliff, too, former assistant to the president James Kuhn told NPR over email.

“The Pointe du Hoc Memorial itself with the English Channel in the background and the Normandy cliffs to the east and west provided the setting for Reagan to bring another strong focus to the Allied invasion on D-Day,” he wrote.

Reagan delivered his address in front of 62 of the Rangers who had scaled the cliff that day, whom he referred to as "the men who took the cliffs … the champions who helped free a continent … the heroes who helped end a war.”

He honored their valor and called on listeners to “continue to stand for the ideals for which they lived and died.” He also spoke of American security and foreign policy — and about the Soviet Union, acknowledging the communist nation's contributions and losses in the war and expressing the U.S.’ hopes of reconciliation.

Reagan’s speech held lessons of “tremendous significance” not only for the Cold War era but for today, David Trulio, president and CEO of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, told NPR over email.

“He made clear that having allies with shared values is part of America’s strength, and that a ready and engaged — as opposed to an isolationist — America is the way to handle expansionist despotic regimes,” he wrote.

Reagan was running for reelection in 1984, much like Biden is this year. Bell said because D-Day ceremonies in Normandy get considerable international attention, they are an especially visible place in which to highlight America’s achievements and values.

For Reagan, part of that included emphasizing the NATO alliance, of which “the nucleus was literally there at Normandy.”

Bell said many of Reagan's themes are still relevant in today’s war-torn world, from “the desire to protect those countries that face aggression” to the “strengthening of our alliances.”

“Pausing to reflect on D-Day or the achievement of the Rangers at Pointe du Hoc really allows us to shine a light on those and give it a venue that those causes, I think, all deserve,” he said. “And frankly, the sacrifice for our men and women who served, suffered and died in the war really deserve that we highlight those as well.”
