Background: The transition of nurse education to the higher education sector in Ireland in autumn 2002 led to the development of a new curriculum for undergraduate nursing with critical thinking as an expected outcome.

Objectives: To investigate critical thinking dispositions and the difference between first and third year nursing students.

Design: A single embedded case study approach incorporating a cross-sectional design.

Setting: Two similar university sites providing a new four year undergraduate honours degree programme in nursing.

Participants: A cohort of first (n = 237) and a cohort of third year (n = 215) undergraduate nursing students.

Methods: Critical thinking provided the main case for this case study. The Delphi conceptualisation of critical thinking underpinned the study and critical thinking dispositions were measured using the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and an independent samples t-test was used to determine differences between the first and third year nursing students.

Results: First year nursing students scored strong while third year students scored weak in overall critical thinking disposition. Both first and third year nursing students revealed a strong score for inquisitiveness, open-minded, analyticity and maturity dispositions. They revealed weak scores for self-confidence, systematicity and truth-seeking dispositions. Inquisitiveness was the strongest while truth-seeking was the weakest disposition for both cohorts. Neither cohort reached the higher positive scores indicative of consistent endorsement of higher level thinking.

Conclusions: Nurse educators need to develop their knowledge of critical thinking dispositions and foster these attributes throughout the pre-registration nursing degree programme. Clinically based scenarios which challenge nursing students and invoke questioning contribute to critical thinking development. Statutory bodies responsible for nurse education and nurse educators must continue to encourage critical thinking.

The population of the study included nursing students who were educated at the Group1, a nd the Group2. The study was conducted with the participat ion of 832 students. The students' total mean score obtained from the Critical-Thinking-Disposition-Inventory wa s found to be 207.03±22.91 in Group1, 216.30±20.92 in Group2 and a-statistically significant difference w as observed between the groups. Although the critic al-thinking mean scores of the students in each group were low, the students in Group2 obtained higher scores than t ose inGroup1. In addition, factors such-as being a fema l , being a fourth-year-student, participating in s ocial and scientific activities positively affected the tende cies of critical-thinking.

Introduction: Critical thinking dispositions (CTD) are valued across the health professions disciplines being essential for decision-making, critical judgment and managing complex health situations. Promoting critical-thinking dispositions in undergraduate nursing students can support the students to utilize critical thinking during challenging patient care and problem-solving situations. Objective: This study aimed to assess the level of critical thinking disposition among neophyte nursing students in a private nursing college. Methodology: An analytical cross-sectional study design was adopted. Neophyte students (n=98) of the BSN program participated in the study. Critical Thinking Dispositions Scale (CTDS) of 54 items under seven constructs was utilized to assess CTD level. Data was analyzed at descriptive and inferential level using SPSS 23.0 version. Results: Overall, CTD among neophytes nursing students is at 75% a progressive level. Contextual and inquisitiveness construct o...

Background: Critical thinking is an imperative outcome of nursing education. However, several factors contribute to the development of critical being including critical thinking dispositions (CTDs). Objective: This study aimed to assess the critical thinking dispositions and factors affecting critical thinking dispositions of BScN students and their educators in twin city Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan. Methodology: A cross- sectional analytical design was used in this study. A consecutive sample of 215 BScN students and 63 educators participated in the study. Data were collected via Pakistan-Critical Thinking Dispositions Scale (P-CTDS) comprising 54 items under the seven constructs; responses were measured on 5-points Likert scale. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 22. Results: The findings showed that 52% of the educators were at the developed level of CTDs and nearly 48% at the developing level; whereas 76% students were inclined towards CTD and only 23% were found at the...

Aim of the study: It aimed to compare critical thinking dispositions among students at Faculty of Nursing in Suez Canal University. Subjects and methods:Comparative descriptive design was conducted on 251 nursing students from four academic years by using stratified random sample. Data were collected using California Critical Thinking DispositionsInventory to assess critical thinking dispositions among nursing students. Results: Total critical thinking dispositions and its characteristics of truth seeking, open mindedness, self-confidence and inquisitiveness had higher mean scores among third year students than others, with statistically significant differences. Conclusion:Critical thinking disposition has statistically significant differences among four academic years' nursing students. Recommendations:Conducting training programs, targeting critical thinking dispositions and various teaching strategies contributing to improve it for students and tutors, are needed to be implemented.

Objective: to compare the levels of general critical thinking and the skills or cognitive attributes involved, individually measured during the training of undergraduate nursing students, through a teaching intervention using Concept Maps. Method: an experimental, randomized, double-blind study with before and after design, conducted with 77 undergraduate nursing students. The research subjects were randomized to the control (38) and experiment (39) groups and both participated in a course on Advanced Life Support in Cardiology for a period of five weeks, when the intervention was the construction of four concept maps. Data collection took place through a sociodemographic questionnaire and the California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST) before and after the course and after in order to measure critical thinking.
