3 Minute Speech on Friendship

Good Morning to one and all present here. I am going to present a speech about friendship. Friendship is one of the treasures that anyone can possess. God gave us the right to choose friends because they will be with us forever. Our parents and siblings are loving us as they are our own blood. But a friend is someone, who is initially a stranger. Then they take their place in our life above all the other relations. Friendship is nothing but true and pure love without expectations in return.

Speech on Friendship

Role of a Friend

True friends always support each other even during the hardest of times. A true friend is one who feels happy for our success, on the other hand, who feel gloomy for our failures. A true friend may criticize also so that we may come out of our weakness.

He may scold us if we do a mistake and guide the right path. That’s why it is being said that true friend is more precious than any gem in our life. Love from your friend will always be unconditional. They may expect nothing from us but shower their love always.

Friendship – A Divine Relationship

Friendship is a divine relationship, which is beyond the definition of blood relations. It is the only relation that is truly priceless. We may acquire all kinds of pleasures by putting our efforts. But even then life may remain dull, without having someone to share our life with some true friends.

It’s natural that human being always tends to find emotional support and social life. In spite of having everything in life, we may remain in a vacuum. It happens only when we have no such good friend to share our small and small happiness in life. Friends are always there to listen to us unconditionally.

There is no Second Chance for True Friendship

Friendship will provide us with thousands of fun moments in life which we may memorize in our old age. But side by side, with times this relation may have moments of crisis. A misunderstanding may crop in and this amazing relation may start weakening.

Always be the first one to save the friendship. God forbid, if due to some unfavorable reason distance ever arises within this relation, we must not let our friend go. Hold his or her hand and apologize for any mistake done. There is nothing more pathetic in anyone’s life than losing a true friend.

Friendship is a relationship that is like a newborn baby. Friendship is always pure and like a bundle of joy which only needs more and more nourishment to grow. Never ignore true friends or take them for granted. We may come across various people at different phases of our life. Many may pretend to be our friends but never go by outward glitter.

At last, I wish to say that a good friendship is very difficult to come across. Therefore, we should appreciate this divine relationship having a base on understanding and feelings. We just need friends to live happily. Lasting friendship is a blessing for everyone.

We don`t need to pretend to be someone else when we spend time with our friends. They give us total freedom to be who we are in reality. We should always be grateful to people who make us happy. A true friend is one of the most precious possessions in anyone’s life.

Offering Practical Advice and Reflection

Friendship speech example #1.

Good morning/afternoon/evening!

Friendship is a testament to the beauty of human connection. It goes beyond mere acquaintanceship and delves into the realm of deep understanding, trust, and shared experiences. A friend is someone who knows us for who we truly are and accepts us without judgment. They see our strengths, our weaknesses, and everything in between, yet choose to stand by our side through it all.

In a world that often feels divided, friendship unites us. It breaks down barriers, fosters empathy and compassion, and reminds us of our shared humanity. Through friendship, we learn to appreciate our differences, to celebrate diversity, and to embrace the richness that comes from engaging with people from various backgrounds and perspectives.

To cultivate and nurture friendships, we must be willing to invest time and effort. It requires being present, actively listening, and showing genuine care and interest in the lives of our friends. It means being there for them in both good times and bad, celebrating their achievements and providing a source of strength during challenging times. Small gestures of kindness and thoughtfulness can go a long way in deepening the bonds of friendship.

Thank you for your attention, and may the bonds of friendship continue to inspire and illuminate our lives.

Friendship Speech Example #2

Today, I want to take a moment to reflect on one of life’s greatest treasures: friendship. Friendship is a beacon of light that guides us, a source of strength that uplifts us, and a tapestry of shared memories that weaves together the chapters of our lives.

True friendship is based on a foundation of trust, respect, and authenticity. It is a safe haven where we can be our true selves, free from judgment or pretense. Our friends see us for who we are, flaws and all, and love us unconditionally. They provide a space where we can express our hopes, dreams, fears, and vulnerabilities without fear of rejection. In their presence, we can grow and evolve, knowing that we have their unwavering support.

Friendship is not just about the good times; it is also about weathering the storms together. It is during the challenging moments that the strength of friendship shines brightest. Friends offer a listening ear, a comforting embrace, and words of wisdom when life becomes overwhelming. They provide a fresh perspective, offering guidance and encouragement to help us navigate through difficult situations. With friends by our side, we are reminded that we are never alone in our struggles.

In conclusion, let us celebrate the gift of friendship. Let us express gratitude for those special individuals who have touched our lives, who have shared our laughter and wiped away our tears. May we cherish and nurture these connections, for they are the foundation of love, support, and understanding. And as we continue our journey through life, may we always be open to new friendships, for each one has the potential to bring new meaning and joy to our lives.

Friendship Speech Example #3

Friendship is a sanctuary where we find solace and comfort. It is a space where we can freely express our thoughts, emotions, and fears, knowing that our friends will listen without judgment. They offer a shoulder to lean on, a compassionate ear to hear our sorrows, and a kind heart to share our joys. In their presence, we feel seen, heard, and understood.

Friendship is also a catalyst for personal growth. Our friends inspire us to be the best versions of ourselves. They challenge us to step outside of our comfort zones, pursue our passions, and confront our fears. They provide honest feedback and constructive criticism, helping us recognize our blind spots and encouraging us to strive for continuous improvement.

In a world that can sometimes feel fragmented and isolated, friendship has the power to bridge divides. It fosters empathy, compassion, and understanding. Through our friendships, we gain exposure to different cultures, perspectives, and worldviews, broadening our horizons and enriching our lives. Friendship teaches us the value of acceptance, tolerance, and embracing diversity.

Thank you for your attention, and may the spirit of friendship continue to illuminate our lives with love, laughter, and lasting connections.

2 Minutes Speech on Friendship

Ladies and gentlemen!

Greetings to all.

Today, I want to discuss friendship with you. Everyone should value and nurture their friendships since they are wonderful things. A good friend is someone you can always count on to stick by your side, who is there for you through good times and bad, who encourages and supports you.

However, friendship is a two-way street. Both parties must put out some effort and devotion. Being dependable, encouraging, and always there for your buddy when they need you will go a long way toward being a good friend in return.

Additionally, friendship is about enjoying one other’s company and having fun. Spending time with friends is one of life’s greatest pleasures, whether it be just hanging out and chatting or going on excursions and creating memories.

So let’s be careful to cherish and care for our friendships. We should never take them for granted because they are an important aspect of our lives. I’m grateful.

Quotes for Speech about friendship

  • “Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.'”
  • “A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.”
  • “Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together.”
  • “A friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves you.”
  • “Friendship is the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words.”
  • “A friend is someone who makes it easy to believe in yourself.”
  • “True friendship comes when the silence between two people is comfortable.”
  • “A friend is someone who believes in you when you have ceased to believe in yourself.”
  • “Friendship is the golden thread that ties the heart of all the world.”

3 Minutes Speech on Friendship

I’d like to talk to you about friendship today. We all need to appreciate and develop our friendships because they are such an essential part of life.

A true friend is someone who stands by you no matter what, through both good and terrible times. You can confide in and trust them, and they’ll always be there to support and uplift you.

Having a friend is more than just having someone to hang out with or go on activities with. It is about developing a close relationship with someone in which you feel free to be who you are and are accepted for who you are.

The fact that friendship can fill our lives with so much joy and happiness is one of its best qualities. When we have close friends, we feel loved and supported, and this can give us the courage and fortitude to deal with any difficulties that may arise.

However, friendship is a two-way street. Being a good friend in return means being there for your friends, offering encouragement and support, and letting them know how much you value their friendship.

So let’s be sure to cherish and treasure the friendships we already have while also making an effort to forge new ones. Always keep in mind that having good friends is important because they are difficult to find.

I’m grateful.

5 Minutes Speech on Friendship

Our lives wouldn’t be the same without our friends. They are the ones we go to when we need assistance, direction, or someone to simply be there for us.

But what characteristics mark a true friend? In a friendship, honesty, loyalty, and reliability are all crucial traits. Someone you can confide in and trust with your secrets is a wonderful friend. They are also devoted, being by your side no matter what and not criticising you for your errors. Speaking openly and honestly with your friends enables a better connection and understanding, therefore honesty is also important in a friendship.

But the friendship is much more than just what we gain from it. It also depends on the effort we put forth. Being a good friend is being there for your friends, giving them support and motivation, and listening well. It involves practising selflessness and occasionally prioritising your friend’s needs over your own.

Both parties must put forth effort and devotion in a friendship. It’s about supporting one another even when it’s difficult. Being a source of joy and laughter as well as a shoulder to weep on is important.

In essence, love, trust, and support are the foundations of friendship. It’s about supporting one another in both good and difficult times. As a result, treasure your friendships and dedicate time to the important people in your life.

My Best Friend Speech - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

  • Speech on My Best Friend -

A friend is someone who isn't a blood relative but is considered as one due to the bond we share with that person. A best friend is someone who you can always count on for help in the form of advice or material things. It is a bond where we can share the things which we cannot share even with family members. One must have a best friend in life.

10 Lines About My best Friend

Short speech on my best friend:, long speech on my best friend.

My Best Friend Speech - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

A best friend is a person who we can trust.

They are the people we like to hangout and have fun with.

We grew up together with our friends having memories and stories.

They offer us mental support in times of hardships and worries.

They act as our parents and console us when we are sad.

They can make us feel connected and make us feel loved .

We can depend on them to make our life meaningful and lively.

We cannot live without friends in our life.

They guide us through the most difficult times of our life.

A life without a best friend is meaningless and dull.

“A good friend is like a four-leaf clover; hard to find and lucky to have.” This proverb is very much true in terms of friendship.

All of us know that a four-leaf clover is very hard to find naturally, it is a rare variation of the three-leaved clover. Just like a good friend is really hard to find these days. They care for you like your parents and fight with you like your siblings. It is truly said that your best friend is another form of your parent. They guide us and give us sound advice like our parents. One can feel at ease with them and have fun naturally with them. We never feel lonely and depressed when we are with our best friend. We all have that friend whose absence, even if it is for a short period of time, may depress us.

They find various ways to have fun and when we are with them, we tend to forget all our worries. They can be your own family members, siblings or even your life partner. People think that a best friend is one who has known you the longest. It may not necessarily be true. Your best friend can be a person you came to know a few months ago as well. The only thing that matters is the care and affection for one another. Hence a best friend will not be a person whom you have known the longest, it's a person who came and never left your side.

The saying ‘A friend in need is a friend indeed’ is very much true in meaning and real life. Having a best friend in life is a true blessing. A best friend is someone one can approach in times of need and despair for advice and help. They make our life lively and give us some good memorable moments. When a person cannot approach their blood relatives and family for a problem, a person approaches their best friend. True friendship is very rare these days. A person can live without his family for a long time but never without a best friend. A best friend is someone who will help you no matter what the time or the situation is. In times of grief or failure, people turn to their friends for advice and consolation.

Well-known Examples Of Friendship

There have been instances where people have given up their lives for their best friends. Friendship doesn’t depend on social status, wealth, or power. It is a pure bond based on love and care. The friendship of Krishna and Sudama is one great example of how it is above status and wealth. Krishna who was a god and king was friends with Sudama, a poor commoner.

Another instance where friendship is way above all societal bonds was the friendship between Duryodhana and Karna. Duryodhana was a king whereas Karna came from humble origins. In spite of this, Karna was a great friend of Duryodhana and due to this bond of friendship, Karna was made a king, he even fought in the Mahabharata war on the Kauravas’ side even though they were morally wrong just for their friendship.

This is the power of friendship where people fight and die for their friends. Friendship doesn’t have to exist between people, it can be between entities and nations as well. Everyone is aware of the Bangladesh war of independence in 1971 in which India supported Bangladesh against Pakistan. As a result, western countries started supporting Pakistan and threatened India with sanctions and armed assault. India was left alone on the global forum with no support and other countries started sending their fleet into the Indian Ocean to threaten India. In response to this, Russia sent its nuclear-powered submarine against all the foreign powers and supported India as a true and loyal friend.

A person’s life will be empty and dull if they don't have friends to spend time with. Despite being rich or powerful, a person may need a friend for advice or for spending time, or even for hanging out. A friendship is the only bond that will last forever. It is a bond everyone should have as it is one of the best feelings.

Diplomatic Example of Friendship

An example where friendship overcame all problems and boundaries was seen in 1971 between Russia and India. During the Bangladesh war of independence in 1971, India's support of Bangladesh led to many countries threatening to fight India. The United States and the UK sent their fleet into the Indian Ocean as a method of threatening India. Then Russia came to India's aid and sent its nuclear-powered submarine so as to deter the threats aimed at India. This was seen as an act of friendship and India returned the favour when it didn't vote against Russia for the invasion of Ukraine.

Like many adults, you may be a reluctant public speaker. But, you obviously are a good friend to somebody. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have been asked to give a speech honoring this friend. This subtle but important distinction should help guide you as you prepare to write a speech honoring your friend. In other words, before you find a piece of paper or pull a chair up to your computer, reframe your task as sharing an insightful story or two about your friend rather than delivering a terse and formal speech. You’ll be well on your way to making a memorable speech that will impress your audience – and make your friend proud.

Identify the Basics

No public speaker – even the accomplished ones – wants surprises. You want to mitigate them to the best of your ability. So find out what you can about the venue, where you will deliver your speech (standing behind a podium is different from standing in the middle of a room or on a stage), the desired length of the speech and, most importantly, your audience. How old are they? Are they both male and female? And how well do they know your friend?

Brainstorming is the “messy part” of writing, so expect some mess to spill out as you develop initial ideas for your speech. Many people have a preferred brainstorming technique, such as writing a bulleted list of ideas, clustering (with supporting ideas circling the main idea in the middle) and freewriting (putting down thoughts in a random manner). Take your time with this step; if you can, put your initial effort aside for a day and return to it again with a fresh pair of eyes.

Develop a Thesis

Speeches can often “run off the rails” because a speaker tries to say too much in too little time. Your mission should not be to tell your friend’s life story, but to enlighten your audience about one or two of his outstanding attributes. This is why crafting a thesis statement is helpful. A thesis – a statement of purpose – serves as a compass, giving your speech focus and direction. Unlike an essay, a thesis for a speech may be indirect and unspoken. For example, a thesis meant to honor someone might be, “I want my audience to know how long my friend has worked on this special project,” or “I want to enlighten this group about my friend’s volunteer activities.”

Begin With an Anecdote

Avoid the tactical error of many well-intentioned public speakers who begin, “My name is...” or “I’m here today to talk about...” Don’t inject your audience with verbal Novocain. Just jump right in, grab your audience’s attention and begin your speech with an anecdote (that supports your thesis). Some of the best anecdotes contain quotations, so be sure you capture your friend’s verbal tics. Your audience should appreciate your attention to detail.

Proceed to the Support

With your audience giving you their rapt attention, now you can provide a little information about how you met your friend and how long you’ve known each other. But keep it brief. Remember that you’re honoring your friend for a reason, so the body of your speech should amplify and support your thesis with examples and illustrations.

End on a High Note

Your opening anecdote should be so compelling that it’s worth revisiting as you write a conclusion to your speech. By providing this crucial link, your audience will gain a sense that your story has come full circle.

Edit, Proofread and Prepare

Writers are often advised to “write like they talk.” This is golden advice for speakers, who will, in fact, verbalize the words they write. In the micro, this means to substitute short words for long words, shorten long sentences and inject places for pauses. Practice your speech in front of someone you trust and listen carefully to how it sounds (and time it, if necessary). A word or phrase may look brilliant on paper but sound awkward or confusing aloud. In this case, go with clarity over brilliance. Finally, set yourself up for success by producing a final copy that suits you. Some speakers prefer reading a speech from paper with jumbo-sized type; others prefer notecards.

Friendship Speech for Students in English

Friends are the family one chooses, and true friends stay with us through thick and thin. A speech on friendship can be given on the occasion of friendship day or any occasion when one wants to celebrate friendship and share the role of friendship in one’s life with others. Here, we will discuss several ways of presenting a friendship speech, like a long speech on friendship and a short speech on friendship. Also, 10 lines on friendship speech in English are discussed below.

Long and Short Friendship Speech in English

Long speech on friendship.

A long version of a speech on friendship can be framed as follows.

Very good morning to everyone. Today, I would like to deliver a speech on friendship which will take us on a walk through the streets of nostalgia and relive the precious essence of friendship that we all have experienced.

Friend. That one kid who stole your candy in school or the one student who gained more marks than you in college, or the topper who taught you everything just before an exam in university. Every friend that crosses our path in life always has something to give us, be it good memories, lessons, or just something worthwhile. True friends are always there for us through thick and thin, through good or bad, and through weal and woe. True friends support us in our decisions and correct us for our well-being. Through this speech on friendship, I am delighted to extend my gratitude to all such friends I am blessed with.

All types of friendships have something or the other that’s unique and special, a best friend, an acquaintance, or a group of friends. Whoever that may be, a friend should always be the one who fuels our passion to flying rather than clipping our wings. As we grow older, making new friends seems to be a tough job as we create a comfort zone of our own. So, the ones who remain friends since childhood and never give up on each other are the ones who are valuable.

Friendship shouldn’t be accompanied by jealousy, ego, or insecurity. A good friendship is one where people can share all their emotions heart to heart without the fear of being judged. Although friends have numerous memories to giggle about, friendship is not only about smiles or jokes. Friends should always respect each other, understand each other and support each other throughout. No one is perfect in this world. So, insecurities and flaws just make a person complete and friends are the ones who never judge each other over each other’s flaws or insecurities, rather support each other when they get agitated due to the same. Searching for the good in people, accepting their flaws, and staying loyal help people end up being good friends.

Friends are very special as we choose them to be with us and include them in our lives. So, one must make sure that they choose good ones. In this busy world, people tend to drift apart from each other due to work or other engagements. Friendships are the strongest when they reach a stage where they don't need to communicate every day to maintain the bond.

In conclusion, I would like to say that with time, friends also become family and a place for us to seek closure. Such friends should be cherished and celebrated as much as possible, and gratitude should be expressed from time to time. I am so grateful to have such amazing friends who are like a family to me. I am thankful for these precious bonds that I have created over time and spending time with them makes everything better. Friendship is the only bond that survives through thick and thin.

Short Speech on Friendship

A short friendship speech can be given on any occasion. Here, students can find an easy way to express their views on friendship in simple words.

Good morning all, today I will speak on friendship. It’s an apt topic for me; a few years ago I would not even have the courage to stand on this stage before you all. I owe a lot to my friends who have supported me and converted my weaknesses into my strengths. Friends are the ones who bring out the best in you. They will always be there for you and turn to your side in good and bad times. Friends are special as they never make you feel alone. They uplift you when you feel discouraged. They are the ones who also bring us to the right path when we are lost.

In friendship, there is no room for negativity or negative emotions. Negative emotions like ego, jealousy, hatred, possessiveness, and anger can only ruin relationships. A true friend is one who can recognize such emotions and help you bring them out. This proves their sincerity and loyalty towards you and such friends should always be held close. We all lose some friends along the way due to distance or misunderstandings. On the other hand, we also gain many real friends who believe in us and support us no matter what the circumstances are.

In conclusion, I would like to add, friendship is a mixed bag and there is every emotion in it and many ups and downs along the way. We should enjoy this gift of friendship and always lead with love, honesty, and understanding.

10 Line Friendship Speech

This form of friendship speech is very useful for students in grades 1-3, who are only discovering friendship in their way, and in these 10 lines, they can understand it simply and more clearly.

Friendship is the first relationship we form after the family.

Making friends is a very natural tendency in one’s life.

When one is younger, they form more friends easily as they are curious and new in this journey of life.

Such early formed friendships can last a lifetime together.

As these childhood friends grow along with us through the good and the bad times.

They are sincere, loyal, honest, understanding, and non-judgmental.

As one becomes older, one becomes angry, jealous, and egoistic.

No friendship should be led with harboring negative feelings.

Friendship is the purest form of bond between two people or more.

The more true friends you have the more sweet life becomes and we can live life to the fullest.

Friendship is one of the most beautiful relationships people can have. A speech on friendship can be given on the occasion of friendship day or even any other normal day because friendship, whenever celebrated, just warms everyone's hearts. So, these are some ways of giving a good speech on friendship like a long speech on friendship, a short speech on friendship and a 10 lines friendship speech in English.

Speech about Friendship

Speculating upon what to write and what not to write when you sit down to prepare a speech on friendship? This article will offer some hand-holding and assist you to write your own friendship day speech.

Speech on How Important It Is to Have a Friend?

As social beings, humans always look out for companionship irrespective of the kind of people they are. Friends make one’s life meaningful and colourful. As kids, your cousins would be the first friends you make. As you grow up, you meet random people who express similar interests, and these are the ones who become your friends eventually.

Friendship is as sweet as it is, but you should always try to make the right kind of friends who would be a strong support in helping you grow. Bad friends can make you feel good about what you do, especially when you do something that is not right. This kind of a friendship would never help you grow to become the kind of person you are destined to be. Good friends, on the other hand, are one of the most wonderful treasures life can possibly give you. Friends are the family you choose. They always stand by you in every situation, no matter what.

Below are a few samples that would aid you in writing a speech on friendship, one that you can say not just on a friendship day but any random day when you want to let your friends know how important they are to you.

Friendship Day Speech

Short speech about friendship, faqs on friendship day.

Friendship Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in the month of August. The idea of celebrating Friendship Day globally was first thought of by Dr. Roman Artemio Bracho in 1958. It, however, was made official by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011. July 30 was declared as the International Day of Friendship with the idea of instilling friendly relations between people, countries, cultures and individuals, which would, in turn, inspire peace among different communities. Since then, people all around the world celebrate Friendship Day by exchanging friendship bands, gifts and greeting cards.

Being in school, Friendship Day was one of the most anticipated celebrations when you wait to collect as many friendship bands as possible every year. To a school kid, the number of friendship bands meant that you had a lot of friends. Friendship bands are definitely a good way to make new friends and also to remind your old friends that they matter to you. However, I would like to say that the number of friendship bands you gain on a Friendship Day does not count. All that counts is that you have at least one friend who has always got your back and would not give up on you even when you give up on yourself. You will feel a lot more lively and confident with just this one person by your side. Friends don’t stand by you only when you are happy; they make sure you are holding up and getting better even in the toughest times. They will love you for what you are and hold your hand even at your worst.

Make friends with your kind of people, and you will have the time of your life. There might be misunderstandings and fights among friends, but it is these fights that would make your bond even stronger. Friends eventually become your family. So, on this Friendship Day, I wish you good friendships and a life filled with happiness and adventure. Happy Friendship Day everyone.

Vladimir Lenin said, “Show me who your friends are, and I will tell you what you are.” The friends you keep are a reflection of the kind of person you are. One becomes friends with people who share similar interests. C.S. Lewis said, “Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” Those who like the same songs, bond over a favourite series or a nostalgic place are the ones who would for sure turn out to be the closest and thickest of friends.

Friends always stand by you. From participating in competitions to getting scolded by parents and teachers, your friends will be there all along. They will keep all your secrets safe and give you the solutions to almost every problem. A good friend guides you and helps you choose the right path.

Have you ever thought what it would be like to live in a world without friends? Those who have had good friends in their life can never imagine a life without them. Friends can influence your life to a great extent in both good and bad ways. It is up to you to choose the right company to keep. Life is an endless loop of making and breaking friends but the whole process of friendship making is what is worth our time in life.

In this particular friendship speech, we shall be giving a beautiful speech on how important friendship is, how to make friends, and what would life be if we didn’t have any friends.

Long friendship speech in English with a word limit of 600 and short friendship speech in English with a word limit of 200 can be used by students for various extracurricular and co-curricular activities in schools and colleges.

Long Speech on Friendship 600 Words in English

Long Speech on Friendship is usually given to classes 7, 8, 9, and 10.

The fact that I have the confidence to come on the stage and speak in front of so many people today in this public speaking event in our school auditorium is because of the confidence and support that my friends gave me. It is my honor today to give a speech on friendship in front of so many of my friends and I would like to use this platform to extend my heartfelt thanks to all my friends who have been with me through my ups and downs.

Friendship is probably the only relationship and the bond that you will develop in your life that comes with no strings attached. Every relationship in your life, whether it’s with your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, mother, father, sister or manager comes with some kind of strings attached and it always involves certain types of given and take obligations. But, a pure friendship is the only relationship in a world where there are no strings attached and you can have your relationship without any obligation of giving and taking.

Students can also find Paragraph on Friendship  and Essay on Friendship from here.

It is this beauty of friendship where you don’t feel any obligation is that makes friendship one of the best bonds that humans can create. There are various types of friendship we give names to such as best friends, few people are close friends, few people just friends and a few people good friends. There is no proper definition for this friendship category but it depends on the kind of mental synchronization that we have with them and how easily we can gel with them compared to other people.

But a lot of us, especially in our college days in school days, find it difficult to make friends easily. Some of us may have lost friends, some of us have gained a lot of friends, some of us have a big circle of friends and some of us have a very small and tiny circle of friends, but at the end of the day, irrespective of how many friends and what type of friends you have, the only thing you will remember about your college and school days is the fun and folly that we have with our friends. Let us admit that without friends, our life will simply be incomplete.

Through this platform provided for me to speak about friendship speech, I would like to address a few issues that many of us face while having friends and maintaining that relationship forever. Jealousy, ego and possessiveness are some of the human tendencies that each and every one of us has. Some of us might be judgemental, some of us might not be judgemental but at the end of the day we are all human beings and we are all born to have both good qualities and bad qualities within us.

While making friends, we look at only their good qualities but during the course of friendship, we get triggered by their bad qualities and hence end up breaking the friendship with them. A strong friendship is that relationship where we understand both the good and bad qualities of our friends and help them grow together. If you enjoy laughing and having a good time with them, it is only human to be with them during their bad times and share their sorrows and grievances.

I would like to conclude this friendship speech by saying that there is no person on this planet who will be perfect. Imperfections are what make human beings beautiful and we have to celebrate these perfections and imperfections with grace. Making and breaking friendship is a natural tendency and neither of it should be the reason for you to lose faith in friendship. Friendship is one of the most valuable and precious bonds and each and every one of us should live through that before it’s too late.

Short Speech on Friendship 200 Words in English

Short Speech on Friendship is usually given to classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

The only memories I have of my school and college days are the fun and enjoyment that I had with my friends. I don’t remember how much I scored in what subject or how well I was appreciated by my teachers, but all I remember is teasing my friends sharing a burst of laughter or two and having some shoulder to cry on. The kind of things that we share with our friends is those things which we cannot share with our families or even our parents.

Friendship comes with no strings attached, no judgments and no jealousy. But what we have to remember is that no person on the planet is perfect and human beings come with both good qualities and bad qualities so do our friendships with people. We can live a happy and content life if we let go of the bad qualities of our friends and concentrate on only on one good quality and if we are good enough, then we help them grow through the bad qualities together.

I would like to conclude my short friendship speech by saying that there is no relationship on earth that is as pure as friendship. It comes with its own baggage of good and bad and the mixture of these both qualities is what makes friendship beautiful.

  • Welcome and introduction - The first part of your eulogy is the welcome and introduction. Thank those for coming to celebrate the life of your friend. Follow this with a brief introduction about your relationship with the deceased before going into more eulogy information .

  • Uplifting conclusion - You want to conclude your eulogy with something that is spiritually and emotionally uplifting, yet relative to your friend and your friendship.

Eulogy for a Best Friend Poem

Eulogy for a Friend Quotes

When you write a eulogy for a dear friend, you may decide to include a quote or two . The quotes should express your thoughts and feelings about your friend. It may be that your friend had a favorite quote or used a quoted as a life mantra, so including it in your eulogy would be very appropriate.

Long Example for a Friend

You might find an example of a touching eulogy for a dead friend helpful. At the very least, you may be inspired and gain a better understanding of what you wish to include in your eulogy. Long version of dear friend eulogy:

"First, I'd like to thank everyone for being here to help Josie's family and friends celebrate her life. I met Josie on a school field trip to the state aquarium. At the time, we attended different schools, but our two groups ended up on the same tour.

"I immediately liked Josie's sense of humor. The tour guide named all the species and told a little about each one. When the tour guide asked if anyone in the group knew the name of the shark swimming in the tank behind him, Josie raised her hand and replied, 'Maneater.'

"We kept in touch after the field trip and a year later Josie's dad, Frank, took a job here in town and Josie and I became inseparable. It was a dream come true that we were able to see each other every day.

"We went on each other's family vacations. We shared everything from our first boy crushes to our first dates. We texted each other all the time, sent selfies and made plans about our future lives. Those plans won't come to pass now. She was taken from us by a drunk driver. In that one moment, her life ended. Everything we planned vanished.

"But my memories remain. I still laugh whenever I think about us trying to sneak back into her bedroom one night while on vacation. We didn't realize the rental property had an automated sprinkler system. I can still hear her squealing and giggling as we tried to dodge the sprinklers, only to be blinded by floodlights triggered by a motion detector.

"Her parents, Frank and Maude, weren't giggling when they opened the front door holding towels. They dried us off and fixed us a midnight snack and then promptly grounded both of us for a week.

"I shall always miss my dear friend. She made me laugh, and she was always there to help me figure things out, listen to me when I was upset, and cheer me up when I was down.

"Josie was fearless and forever curious about - everything. Her favorite quote was from an ancient history class we took together a few years ago. The ancient Greek philosopher Epictetus said, "There is only one way to happiness, and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will." Josie lived this quote and I'll try to live it. For certainly, her no longer being here is something well beyond the power of our will."

Short Eulogy Example for a Friend

Sometimes a short eulogy for a friend is an ideal choice. You want to consider the funeral venue and frame your eulogy according to the setting and those in attendance. For example, if your friend was a musician, you may want to have a shorter eulogy so you can play your friend's favorite song . Short eulogy written for a fellow musician:

"Thank you all for being here today to give John a proper send off for a fellow musician. I met John about six years ago when we were both playing gigs in Memphis. We connected that first set and went on to form our little jazz band, ending up playing here in New Orleans. John wasn't a formal guy and would never want me eulogizing him. He was humble and the only thing he valued almost as much as his family and friends was his music. John once told me, he could give up beer, pizza and chocolate peanuts - and we all know how much he loved those foods - but the one thing he couldn't live without was music. So, John this song is for you, brother, with all my heart, you are the one thing in life I never thought I'd have to give up!"

Tribute to a Friend at a Funeral

When you give a touch eulogy for a dear friend, you want it to convey your emotions about your friend. You want the eulogy to serve as an example of who your friend was and how he/she touched your life and the lives of others.

Steps for writing a eulogy for a friend

Writing a eulogy for another loved one may be a bit different than writing one for a friend. Before you start composing a eulogy for a friend, it’s a good idea to check in with the family or funeral director. Ask whether they’ll request eulogies from friends, in general, and if they’d like you to give a speech, specifically.

Often, the family will reach out to family members and friends ahead of the funeral to ask if they would like to speak.

Also, ask the family or the funeral director how much time you’ll have to give a eulogy. Generally, a eulogy should be between three and five minutes (about 500-1000 words). However, if more than a few people are giving eulogies, you may be asked to keep it shorter. If only one or two people are speaking, they might give you more time.

2. Start as Soon as Possible

Don’t put off writing your eulogy for a friend until the last minute. The sooner you get to work on your tribute, the better. Of course, this is often easier said than done.

When a friend passes away, you might have just a few days to prepare for the funeral.

During that time, you’ll be struggling with feelings of grief that might make the task of preparing a eulogy seem insurmountable. However, expressing your emotions on paper can help you cope in those early days of grieving.

It’s essential to understand the purpose and tone of a eulogy. Eulogies differ from other pieces of funerary writing--obituaries and elegies--in crucial ways.

A eulogy should be personal in tone, and its purpose is to commemorate the deceased. It shouldn’t be similar to an obituary, which is straightforward and journalistic in mood.

A eulogy also differs from an elegy , which is a piece of poetry or lyrics dedicated to the departed. However, you might choose to include a short piece of poetry in your eulogy.

The tone of a eulogy should be relatively casual and conversational. It’s okay to share feelings of grief, but overall, the tone should be positive.

4. Journal About Your Time Together

Next, sit down with a pen and paper, and just let the words flow naturally. Don’t attempt to edit yourself at this stage.

Think back to the last time you saw your friend, and to the first day the two of you met. Think about the best times you spent together, and the worst. What were your inside jokes, and how did they start? What was something only your friend knew about you and vice-versa?

This is an important starting step for composing a eulogy, but it’s also a helpful tool in the grieving process.

In this step, you’ll start taking the things you wrote in your journaling session and forming them into a eulogy. When you give any speech, including a eulogy, one of the most important factors to consider is your audience.

Try to picture who will be in attendance at your friend’s funeral. The eulogy you give at the funeral is as much for them as it is for the friend you’ve lost.

Knowing your audience will help you think of even more anecdotes and tidbits about your friend that you’d like to share. It will also help guide your tone and steer clear of anything that doesn’t suit the audience.

Now, you can start brainstorming some added ideas for the eulogy for your friend. If you followed Step 4, then you may have already answered some of the questions below. Going over these concepts might stir up even more ideas for things you want to include in your eulogy:

  • What was something that made your friend different from everyone else?
  • What sights, smells, or sounds remind you of your friend the most?
  • What influence did your friend have on the world and the people around her?
  • How did you and your friend first meet?
  • What was something about your friend that always made you laugh?
  • Do you wish you could say something to your friend? If so, what do you want to tell them?

7. Find the Theme

When you look back on all of the notes you have so far, you might notice a running theme. Maybe, in all of your stories and descriptions, it’s your friend’s sense of humor that shines through. Maybe your friend always showed strength in times of hardship. Maybe he was kind to everyone he met.

Going through what you’ve written, find the common thread that ties it all (or most of it) together. You can then center your eulogy around that theme. You can shine a light on the traits in your friend that shone the brightest, and those that you admired most.

A beautiful and well-crafted eulogy needs an organized and detailed outline. In your outline, include the following sections. For each part, jot down the talking points you want to hit.

Introduction

Introduce yourself and how you know the departed. Then, conversationally provide context for your speech.

You don’t need to summarize your points in the style of a thesis statement, but present the primary purpose of your eulogy. For example, if your speech focuses on a particular personality trait, introduce that idea. Check out our tips on how to start a eulogy if you need extra help.

Here is where you’ll give the majority of your eulogy. Include talking points for everything you want to convey and organize the items in a logical order.

Consider the chronology of events so that the audience can easily follow along. Include transitional phrases so that it’s clear when you’re moving from one topic to another.

You’ll draw your speech to a close by summing up what you’ve discussed, or by giving a final piece of insight that ties everything together. Read our guide on how to end a eulogy for more ideas.

9. Write Your Eulogy

Next, you’ll fill in the points you wrote down for your outline. When you write your eulogy, you don’t need to write out exactly what you’ll say at the funeral (unless you plan on reading your tribute from the page). But get as close as possible to what you want to convey, word-for-word, to your audience.

This will help determine whether the speech is complete or whether it needs more work. It will also help you edit your eulogy to meet the time limit.

10. Edit Your Eulogy

Now that you’ve composed your speech, it’s time to go back and edit. Check that your eulogy is an appropriate tone, and that it suits the audience.

Make sure you can deliver your tribute in the allotted time. Most of all, make sure your eulogy conveys everything you want to say at your friend’s funeral.

11. Memorize Your Speech

For memorization, you have two options: you can attempt to memorize your written eulogy word-for-word, or you can remember a set of speaking points. If you choose to memorize the speech word-for-word, you’ll need to practice the speech more, which requires more time.

If you choose to use speaking points instead, you can write those points down on a notecard, which you can bring with you to the funeral. When it’s time to give your eulogy, those key points will remind you what you want to say.

If neither of those options sounds ideal, you may choose to bring the written speech with you and read it nearly word-for-word.

Whichever route you choose, practice your speech several times before the funeral using that method. You can also read more tips for speaking at a funeral if you need more help.

Quote from an example eulogy for a friend

Writing a eulogy for a friend can be easier if you have a few examples. Below are some examples of excerpts from eulogies for friends who have passed.

For a friend who died of cancer or another terminal illness

  • "January 25th is a day I’ll always remember. That will always be the day that I lost a lifelong friend, and one of the strongest people I’ve ever met. Even though we knew it would happen someday soon, it still came as a shock."
  • "Through his own suffering, Ted Kennedy became more alive to the plight and the suffering of others." - Barack Obama
  • "I vow to be a little stronger every day for her because that's what she would have wanted, I vow to be stronger for anyone who's lost somebody to cancer." - Lady Gaga

For a friend who died suddenly

  • "Today is our chance to say thank you for the way you brightened our lives, even though God granted you but half a life." - Earl Spencer for Princess Diana
  • "I’m here today to honor Christine, my closest friend, who left us so suddenly. The memories we shared will always bring joy to my heart, and I’d like to share some of those with you today.
  • "I’m still struggling to believe that Fred is truly gone. It seems like just yesterday that he was speaking as best man at my wedding, cracking up the audience with his dry sense of humor."

For a friend who died too young

  • "I would like to talk about James and the life he lived. His was a life cut too short, but it isn’t one that will quickly fade away."
  • "Kris was only here for 25 short years. But in that time, she changed the world for the better, enough for a thousand lifetimes."
  • "Today, we’ve gathered to remember Gina’s joyful spirit, which we were lucky to have in our lives for even a short time."

Honoring Your Friend's Legacy

Crafting a eulogy isn’t easy, but it’s important. Your eulogy will help guide the tone of the funeral and bring comfort to those who are mourning your friend. The words you speak will help everyone in the audience look back fondly on the time they shared with that person.

When you’re composing a eulogy for a friend, keep in mind the person who you’re writing about, and let that guide the direction of your speech.

How To Write A Killer Best Man Speech (With Templates)

A funny, heartfelt speech from the best man is one of the most memorable parts of a wedding. Here’s how to give a great toast (without embarrassing yourself).

Subscribe to our weekly newsletter

A best man speech is the perfect way to send your brother or friend the best wishes in their marriage, but standing up in front of the crowd can be super nerve-wracking. If you’ve been invited to be the best man at a wedding but have no idea what to say in your speech, you’re not alone!

Over 75% of the population cites public speaking as one of their biggest fears. Thankfully, it’s a people skill that anyone can develop. A great event toast can be a game-changer and make you feel like a celebrity amongst the wedding guests.

Watch our video to learn the best (and worst) speech openers:

Here’s how to overcome your public speaking anxiety and give a knockout best man speech that will incite laughter, smiles, or even sentimental tears.

Quick Answer: How to Write a Best Man Speech Fast (with Template!)

A killer best man toast has a formula:

  • Start with a funny or complimentary introduction
  • Lead into a short story
  • Add a dash of vulnerability
  • End with genuine congratulations to the bride and groom.

You won’t want to wing the speech after you’ve had a few drinks when you feel strapped for time before the wedding. Instead, take just 30 minutes of planning and note-making to save you (and the bride & groom) the embarrassment of an excessively long or inappropriate ramble.

If you want to write a best man speech fast, follow this brief template for a great toast. Your toast should be roughly 3 to 5 minutes long. You can use numbered index cards to jot down the highlights of each section. Then, rehearse a few times in the mirror in the days leading up to the event.

The most straightforward speech outline includes seven main components:

  • A great one-liner : This could be a funny joke, a compliment, or an inspirational quote about brotherhood or marriage. The first 15 seconds of the toast should capture the audience’s attention and leave them excited for more. Modify this:

“I’d like to begin by congratulating the groom for his superb taste in choosing the best man [chuckle].”

  • Compliment the wedding : Build your respect with the guests by highlighting things you like about the wedding. For example, you can compliment the beauty of the venue, the delicious food, or the great choice of music. Modify this:

“All jokes aside, this is a beautiful wedding. The bride and groom look like a movie star couple together. And if you didn’t taste the cake, you are missing out!”

  • Express gratitude : Say “thank you” to those who made the wedding possible and show appreciation to the groom for choosing you as his best man. Modify this:

“I am so grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Zimerman for hosting us here today, and thank you to the bride and groom for inviting me to be part of their special day.”

  • Tell a story : Did you and the groom meet as kids on the baseball field? Were you there when he first met his bride? Did you share a funny experience in college that is appropriate to share? The “meat” of the speech will be a short story about your relationship with the groom. A great story sounds like this:

“When I first met Jeff, he was in a period of transition in life, like we all go through. He had just started a new job at my office in San Francisco, and we met because of our mutual addiction to double shot espressos (iced with a little cream) at 6 AM every morning from the corner coffee shop Bob’s Cup O’ Joe. When we both arrived at the office at the same time, 3 days in a row with eyes like this [widen eyes big], I knew we would be friends for life. A million espressos, meetings, and after-work beers later, I am so proud to call Jeff my best friend. When he told me about meeting a beautiful blonde named Anne at Bob’s Cup O’ Joe a few years later, I knew something would become of it. She even drank the same double shot espressos, iced with a little cream!”

  • Admire the couple : Strengthen your bond with the newlyweds by expressing your support for their marriage. If you know a bit about the bride and groom’s relationship, list a few things you admire about their bond. You may emphasize how the bride has positively impacted the groom’s life or how they make a great team.

“Jeff and Anne are a perfect pair, and it seriously warms my heart to see a couple so amazingly in love. They compliment each other in every way and radiate joy when they are together.”

  • Summarize your thoughts : Before you wrap up your speech, go back and highlight your key ideas. You can pre-write 2-3 crisp sentences summarizing your support of the couple’s marriage. Modify this:

“I wish I could say I predicted this day would come, but Jeff’s incredible character and charm won Anne over. I am so grateful to be friends with both of them and to join you all in this celebration.”

  • Toast to the future : At the end of your speech, raise your glass for a toast to the couple’s love. Modify this:

“Please join me in raising our glasses to a lifetime of happiness and espressos for Jeff and Anne Allison!”

Here is an awesome example of a short and sweet 4-minute toast that left the crowd cracking up:

It’s best to memorize your speech, but there is no shame in bringing a few index cards in your pocket to reference if you get nervous. Don’t forget to prepare and rehearse in advance.

For a more in-depth speech, see our step-by-step guide below.

What to Say in a Best Man Speech (Do’s and Don’ts)

A best man’s speech traditionally takes place at the wedding reception after the maid of honor gives her speech. The best man’s speech should be positive, respectful, and congratulatory. It can last 3 to 5 minutes and should focus on a central theme or story about the groom.

Remember, a best man speech is not the time to “wing it.” If you do that, there may come the point when everything suddenly goes silent, and a crowd of 50-100+ people is staring at you, waiting for what you’re going to say about the groom. You probably don’t want to end up with a cringing audience while telling a story about the groom’s previous relationships:

Instead, remember these key best man speech tips for a successful toast:

Pre-plan your speech with a layout and index cardsDon’t wing it or try to go on the fly
Keep your speech 3-5 minutes longDon’t give an excessively short or long speech
Open with a catchy one-liner or jokeDon’t start with a dull or droning tone
Tell a short story about the groomDon’t make it about you
Use fun, family-friendly humorAvoid risky or inappropriate topics and jokes
Use deep breathing to calm your nerves before the speech Don’t drink too much
Congratulate the groom Don’t ignore the bride
Compliment the brideInsult or tease the bride (I know it may be tempting, but it NEVER goes over well)
Read the room and get to know the guestsDon’t use profanity (unless it’s acceptable in the family)

Here are a few examples of what you should say in a best man speech:

  • How did you meet the groom?
  • What is one of your favorite memories with him?
  • How did the groom meet the bride? Were you there?
  • What is special about the groom?
  • What do you like most about him?
  • What are his positive traits?
  • Playful banter : You don’t want to be too corny and cheesy with your bro. Depending on your relationship with the groom and the culture of the wedding, you may want to throw in a little banter with your dude. For example, you might make a funny joke about how much the groom loves going out to eat:

You should also avoid some key topics in a best man speech.

Do not mention:

  • The groom’s past relationships
  • Sexual jokes
  • Drugs, alcohol, or past mistakes
  • Insecurities of the groom
  • Financial or personal information
  • Insults to the bride or the wedding guests
  • Overly embarrassing stories
  • Teasing the bride
  • Anything that could potentially harm your friendship

Keep things positive and lighthearted. While a little witty banter or playful teasing can be fun (depending on your relationship with the groom), you should avoid insulting him or highlighting any major insecurities. The “playful” part of the speech is an excellent fun icebreaker, but it shouldn’t hurt anyone’s feelings or make them feel publicly embarrassed in front of their wedding guests.

How to Write a Best Man Speech for Best Friend or Brother: Easy Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re ready to prepare something more in-depth than the quick ideas above, this step-by-step guide can help you write a thoughtful speech that the groom may remember forever. After all, being named the best man at your friend or brother’s wedding is a tremendous honor. But like any honor, it comes with some responsibilities. After you finish all your bachelor party and wedding duties, an epic best man speech can be like the fireworks at the show’s end.

Here are 5 simple steps to make it count:

#1 Start with a theme

Before you start writing and rehearsing your speech, it helps to decide on a theme for your talk. This will give a nice flow to the speech. A theme ensures that you stay on track to communicate your congratulations and appreciation to the groom.

What is the main message you want to get across? A few theme ideas include:

  • Anecdotes : Best man toasts center around storytelling. This theme is the easiest way to stay on track because you are telling a simple story from beginning to end.
  • Humor : Whether you’re naturally funny or working on your jokes ,  your speech is the perfect opportunity to get the audience laughing. Best man speeches are known for getting a little saucy, but you must be careful about offending the crowd or making crude jokes that might insult the bride and groom. If you want to tease the groom with some witty banter, it helps to make fun of yourself or reference an appropriate inside joke.
  • Inspirational : Have you and the groom achieved an important business goal or accomplishment together? Do you have a shared role model or favorite motivational book you both read in college? This speech theme can leave the audience feeling inspired.
  • Morality : Use your speech to highlight the great person the groom is. Perhaps you give examples of his integrity, trustworthiness, or generosity. You can emphasize how lucky you are to know the groom and how glad you are that he found a woman to spend his life with.
  • Sentimentality : When humor and storytelling aren’t your fortes, it doesn’t hurt to get a little corny. Sentimental speeches require a level of emotional vulnerability, but they can leave a huge impact on the newlyweds and their attendees.

#2 Create an outline

You wouldn’t go on a road trip without a navigation system, so don’t go into your speech without a plan. The best toasts and speeches follow the same structure. Pull out a piece of paper and brainstorm some ideas using this format, then use the following steps to fill in the details:

  • Hook/Opening statement : The opening statement should be a 1 to 3-line description about the groom. The first 7 seconds of the speech should hook the audience immediately. It warms them up to you and makes them want to pay attention to the amusing stories. You’ll find an abundance of opening-line ideas in the next section.
  • Background context : Now comes the why of your speech. This is where the context of your relationship with the groom comes in. You can throw in some funny jokes and a few details about your experience with him. Use this intro to build up the anticipation for the story to come. Write down a few ideas of stories you can tell.
  • Tell the story : Choose 1-3 short stories about the groom that is funny, slightly embarrassing, or interesting. Jot down a few of the sensory elements you want to reference, like the smelly locker room or the squeaking of tire wheels. Most stories follow a bell-curve pattern—they start with an intro, lead to rising action, peak with a capstone moment, then tie back to the beginning. Keep this in mind as you brainstorm and follow the story-planning steps below.
  • Take-home message : After you get a good laugh or “awww” out of the audience, you’ll want to bring the story back to the beginning. What do you want them to remember about your speech and friendship with the groom?
  • Thank the wedding party : Use a quick sentence to thank the wedding party and hosts. Express your genuine gratitude for being invited.
  • Closing toast and congratulations : After wrapping up the story and thanking the wedding party, you should invite the audience to toast the bride and groom with you. For an extra cheery finale, act as if you are speaking on their behalf and include lots of well-wishes for the newlyweds.

Pro Tip : Before filling in your outline details, watch this video for an overview of how to give a memorable toast. Human behavior expert Vanessa Van Edwards explains the most common mistakes (don’t start with “I,” “me,” or “my”) and a few secrets to getting the audience to perk up in their seats.

#3 Nail the opening line

Once you have your outline, it’s time to dig into the details. People decide their first impression of you within 7 seconds, so it’s extra important to nail the opening line of your speech. Best men use this opportunity to crack a joke, compliment the wedding, or set a sentimental tone for the speech.

Avoid making the first lines about you. No “me”, “I”, or “my”. Instead, start with a juicy or mysterious line about the groom, for example:

I was the groom’s roommate in college.Ben was the self-proclaimed organization king in college. As his roommate, I feared leaving a pen on the desk.
I am the groom’s younger brother. As a kid, the groom was so excited to have a younger brother that he quickly crowned me as his servant for the next 10 years.
My favorite thing about the groom is his…Tonight you’ll learn why the groom was always…
My favorite story about the groom was…The best story I have about the groom starts with a greasy cheeseburger and a speeding ticket.

If you need a little inspiration, here are some hilarious and quirky best man speech opening lines:

  • “Caring, loyal, honest, good-looking, and an all-around-great guy… OK, enough about me, onto the groom…!”
  • “This is the perfect chance to tell you about [Groom] and how talented, special, smart, good-looking, and… sorry, man, I can’t read your handwriting here.”
  • “I’d like to give a toast to the bride and groom.” [pull a piece of toasted bread from your pocket and give it to them]
  • “[Groom’s name] is the kind of person you call when you lock yourself out of the dorm bathroom without any clothes on.”
  • “The bride and groom asked me not to share embarrassing stories or crude jokes during my speech… so that’s it from me! Thanks for listening, everyone.”
  • “I’d like to start by congratulating the groom for his excellent taste in choosing the best man.”
  • “[Groom] had a tough time choosing his best man. First, he called his most handsome friend, but he said no. Then, he called his smartest friend, and he said no. Then, he called his most successful friend, who also said no. Then he called me, and I said, ‘Bro, I can’t say no to you four times.'”
  • “What can I say about [Groom]? I guess I’ll start at the very beginning. He was born on [groom’s birthday]. Our parents were hoping for a girl, but I’ve always said… close enough.”

Here is a genuinely funny opening line from a best brother wedding speech:

Pro Tip : Don’t forget to pause for laughter. If it doesn’t come, you can chuckle at yourself and cue the audience that they are supposed to laugh by saying, “This is where you are supposed to laugh,” or joking, “Sound guy, can you please cue the laugh track?” Then, keep going with your speech.

Don’t worry. You need not be a jokester to give a great opening line. If you want to go the nostalgic or tearjerker route, be sure it is highly personalized and thoughtful. Here are some sentimental opening line ideas:

  • “There are friends, and there is family, but friends also become family. This is so true for [Groom] and me. We’ve been best friends since we were X years old, and I’ve always considered him my brother.”
  • “There’s an old Irish proverb that says a good friend is like a four-leaf clover—hard to find and lucky to have. I think that’s true. Good friends are hard to find, and I’m lucky to have called [Groom] my best friend for the last X years.”
  • “I’ve heard that the best relationships come from the foundation of a deep friendship. Experts say that laughter, mutual respect, and enjoying each other’s company are the ingredients for a long-lasting, joyful marriage. After knowing [Groom] and [Bride] for X years, there is no doubt in my mind that they will make a great pair.”
  • “In Good Will Hunting , Robin Williams said, ‘It doesn’t matter if the guy is perfect or the girl is perfect as long as they are perfect for each other.” Anyone who has seen [Groom] and [Bride] together can agree that this is true for them. I haven’t seen a perfect pair, and I’m happy to be part of this celebration of their love.”

#4 Background context

Now that you’ve grabbed the audience’s attention, it’s time to give them a little background on why you are giving a speech in the first place. This is another sneak peek at some details you’ll cover in the speech.

The whole point of this part is to tell them how you know the groom—but it isn’t about you. You’ll often hear wedding speeches that start with a drab, “I met the groom in college” or, “My name is ___, and I’m the best man.” You can do better than that! Try saying:

  • “The groom was the first friend I made on the high school football team. I had no idea we would become roommates in a bachelor pad throughout college.”
  • “As little kids, the groom and I were known to be a dangerous duo in the neighborhood. He always carried the eggs and toilet paper, then instructed me where to throw them. But you can guess who always took the blame for his antics….”
  • “The groom and I have been friends and business partners for X years, and as you’ll hear shortly, he is the main reason I broke my arm during the last office basketball game. But first, I want to tell you a less embarrassing story….”

Pro Tip : Focus on the groom, and don’t make it about you. One of the biggest mistakes people make during wedding speeches is talking too much about themselves. Your speech shouldn’t discuss where you’re from, what you think, or how you ended up at the party. The best man’s speech is a time to focus on the groom and his bride.

#5 Tell the story

After your punchy opening line and background info, it’s time to tell the perfect story about the groom. Depending on the length of your speech and the details of your story, some best man speeches cover 1 to 3 short stories.

Reference back to the memories you wrote when brainstorming. Pick a story that includes the most of these captivating elements:

  • A little bit of embarrassment : Whether it’s you, the groom, or a mutual friend, it helps to poke some fun at someone in the story. If you fear being offensive, the best person to joke about is yourself.
  • Audience member references : You can get major bonus points if you bring wedding guests into the storytelling moment. You might say, “Mom, you might want to close your ears on this one!” or, “Brian, we’re talking about you!”
  • Sensory details : What did the scenery look like? What were the prominent smells, sounds, and tastes at the moment? A great story should make the audience feel like they were with you. Don’t forget to mention the frigid cold lake you jumped into or the outrageously spicy food that left you both panting and crying for water.
  • A final punch line : Ideally, the best story ends with a shocking moment or funny line. It should leave the audience laughing, crying, surprised, or even gasping. For example, in an epic adventure story about you and the groom on a hunting trip, you may end with, “Just as the shark was about to bite the line, Joe reeled in the massive bluefin and yelled, ‘I think we’re gonna need a bigger boat!’”

Pro Tip : If you have to ask, “Is this appropriate?” it probably isn’t. Some stories are better for late-night beers than they are for weddings. Avoid telling stories related to sexual topics, drugs, alcohol, illegal activities, or anything you wouldn’t want grandma to hear.

#6 Take-home message

When the story finishes, you’ve hopefully elicited some laughter or maybe some tears. All jokes aside, there is a reason you were the best man, and you are probably a significant person to the groom. This is a great time to emphasize the best qualities of the groom and why you’re so happy for his new love.

Here is an excellent example of tying together the opening and closing lines with a heartfelt message about finding the perfect soul mate:

#7 End your speech with a heartfelt toast

We’ve all heard “let’s raise a glass to [Bride] and [Groom]” before. You can do better than that! The final toast is like the fireworks at the end of your best man speech. Instead of something mediocre, invite the audience to join you in a genuine, thoughtful congratulations. Examples include:

  • “Please join me in raising our glasses to the beautiful bride and handsome groom. May your lives together be long, healthy, and happy. We love you so much and are excited for you. Cheers!”
  • “Lift your glasses to thank Mr. and Mrs. [Bride’s Parents] for hosting this beautiful wedding. Let us all toast to the perfect union of the bride and groom. We wish you a bright and beautiful future. Cheers!”
  • “Here’s to the past, for all you’ve learned. Here’s to the present for this beautiful moment we all share. Here’s to the future for all you’ve got to look forward to. Cheers to the happy couple!”

Pro Tip : Make your toast inclusive and communal, so the audience feels like they’re cheering for the couple with you. Use words like “we”, “lets”, and “us”. This congratulation invites them to join as if you are speaking on their behalf.

#8 Use a best man speech template

A template makes things simple if you’re still feeling uneasy about writing your best man speech. You can take the structure of an example speech and incorporate your ideas and stories to make it your own.

Best man speech example for a best friend :

“Tonight, you’ll learn why the groom was destined to marry [Bride]. The year was 2002, and we were all in a bar with friends on New Year’s Eve in New York City. Snow was falling outside, and we were sipping champagne, waiting for the big ball to drop. Seemingly out of nowhere, a woman with a red dress entered the room, and everything seemed to stop. All the bachelors in our group were captivated, but only [Groom] had the guts to walk up to her. Rumor has it that his first opening line was ‘

Everyone talks about a woman’s glow when she’s falling in love, but I swear that [Groom] was smiling from ear to ear from the second they met. We could hardly get him to stop talking about her by the following week. We’d be watching football and drinking beers only to have [Bride’s] name brought up every 5 minutes.

Fast forward 3 years, and we’ve all seen how much [Bride] has positively impacted his life. When he came to me to tell me he was proposing, my only response was, ‘ Finally, dude !’

There’s something extra special about these two. They go together like peanut butter and jelly. They love and respect each other so much. [Bride] was the one for [Groom] from the second they locked eyes in that hazy NYC bar. We are all so happy to be here for your big day. Let’s raise our glasses to the beautiful bride and groom! Cheers!”

Another Best man speech example for a best friend :

“The groom was the first friend I made on the high school basketball team. He wasn’t very good [pause for laughter]. I was the tallest player and obviously had the best free throw, but I was majorly lacking in the ladies department. Thankfully, [Groom] took me under his wing and showed me how to be a true gentleman. That includes opening doors for women and carrying their bags instead of just running in with my own. What would I have done without you, man?

Even though he was no good at basketball, [Groom] always had his head on his shoulders. He’s a respectful, intelligent, and relatively clean-cut guy. All joking aside, it’s no surprise that he ended up with a woman as intelligent and beautiful as [Bride]. You both deserve a lifetime of love, happiness, and success together. Please raise your glasses and join me in congratulating the bride and groom! We love you!”

#9 Practice your body language

Public speaking isn’t only about what you say but how you carry yourself. Your body language can drastically affect your confidence, your delivery, and how the audience perceives you. Use these body language hacks to take your speech to the next level:

  • Signal “friend” : Smile and show your open palms to send the message that you are the audience’s friend. This makes people feel more comfortable with your presence and more likely to listen.
  • Stand up straight : When you look confident, you also feel more confident. Check your posture if your voice is a little shaky before the speech. Roll back your shoulders and tuck your shoulder blades down towards your back. Slightly lift your chest and chin as you speak.
  • Make eye contact: Throughout the speech, you should change your eye contact with different audience members. As you mention specific compliments or thanks, make eye contact with the bride, groom, groomsmen, bridesmaids, and the bride’s father.
  • Genuinely smile : Smiling may seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget when you feel so focused on a perfect delivery. At the same time, you don’t want to look like you’re fake smiling throughout the speech. Use these 9 Simple Tips to Smile Better (in any situation!)
  • Use your hands : It’s easy to let your nerves get the best of you and feel like a “deer in the headlights.” Instead of tucking your hands in your pockets, widen your stance and take up space. Use your hands and gestures while you talk to show that you are comfortable and happy during the speech.

#10 Rehearse before the big day

Experts say you should rehearse a speech 10 times before performing it. Research also shows that people who mentally prepare themselves before a speech by imagining it going well are more likely to perform fluently and easily. So before you get in front of an audience, be sure you’ve gone over your speech at least 10 times, either in your head or out loud. Better yet, practice in the mirror, on camera, or in front of a trusted friend.

It also helps to review the gist of the speech with the groom (without giving away any secret details) to make sure it’s alright with him. A few weeks before the wedding, you may pull him aside and ask, “Hey man, is it OK if I tell the story about ____ in my best man speech? I think it’ll get some good laughs.”

Although this example is long, this best man very clearly rehearsed his speech for a near-perfect performance without any notes:

Key Takeaways: Express Gratitude and Sentimentality in 3-5 Minutes

Ultimately, a best man speech is an opportunity to make your best bro look good in front of all his friends and family. Your speech should demonstrate how much you value your brotherhood or friendship. At the same time, you can enjoy 5 minutes of wedding fame without making things all about you. A great toast can make you a memorable celebrity at the wedding and have people laughing at your

Before jumping up at the reception and speaking off the cuff, remember to:

  • Outline and plan your speech ahead of time. Use notecards if needed.
  • Focus on the groom and his bride. Don’t go on and on about yourself.
  • Nail the opening line with a funny joke, quote, or teaser that leads into a great story.
  • Avoid inappropriate or cringey topics that could embarrass the groom.
  • Express gratitude to the groom and wedding hosts.

Giving a toast or speech is an essential social skill that can make you one of the most likable people in a room. If you want to learn more about the art of giving showstopping toasts, read this guide on How to Give an Awesome Toast: Advanced Strategies for Speeches .

There is a saying that goes: you don’t get to pick who you are related to. But I know that you do get to choose who your family is, and you are my family. We are so much closer than sisters. You know everything about me, from my hopes and dreams to my fears and worries. You are my biggest cheerleader and supporter. I don’t know how my life would be if you weren’t in it, but I am certain it wouldn’t be as fun. You are and will always be my best friend for life.
Certain things happen in a certain way at a certain time and place for a certain reason. And sometimes, God brings certain people into our lives for a purpose, but whatever reasons He had in mind for making our path cross and bringing us together, I don’t really care, because I’m honored and grateful that He did. I love you always, my dearest friend.
Hello my sweetest friend, I want you to know that I’m blessed to have a great friend like you. Your friendship is invaluable to place a price tag on, and it’s more precious than the finest gold and silver in the entire universe. You’ve touched my heart in so many ways that I could never have thought of your care and love and I will always treasure our friendship with every breath in me. I love you, my beautiful friend.
They say you don’t get to pick who you’re related to. That’s true. But you do get to pick who your family is. Your real family. And you’ll always be my family. We’re closer than sisters could be, thicker than any thieves. You know all my secrets, all my wild ambitions. You support every one of my craziest fantasies. What would I do without you? I guess I’d have to watch Rent and Titanic on my own, on the couch, with a pint of ice cream and no one to cry with. I’d have to learn to take care of myself. I’d have to dole out my own advice. I’d have to scheme and dream – all on my own.
Romantic relationships are based on expectations and responsibilities. Professional relationships are based on gains and losses. But friendship is based on smiles and laughter. Good morning my friend.
We’re best friends because we can go for long stretches of time without talking and it won’t damage the relationship. We always pick up where we left off. Surfaces changes mean nothing to us. You could become a vegan who goes by Moonshadow and attends Burning Man, and I would still feel closer to you than anyone else. We don’t need common interests in order to connect. We don’t need a mutual love of music or sports or whatever to keep us together.
Thank you first of all for accepting me and loving me for exactly who I am. This isn’t easy. I can be stubborn, difficult and confusing, but you love and accept me for me. There are days I wonder when you’ll finally come to your senses and move on and find a new BFF, one who isn’t so complicated, but to my amazement, you never do. You tell me you’ll take the good with the bad, and when I question whether I have any good left, you’re always there to reassure me and show me that I do. Thank you for loving me in my dorky and difficult moments, moments where if the rest of the world saw them, they’d probably walk away. Thank you for understanding me like no one else does; if we didn’t have the connection we did, I can’t imagine how lonely and big this world would feel. Because of you, this world seems like a little friendlier place, one I can see myself being a part of.
No matter where life takes us, I will always be your best friend. I will be there when you need someone to talk to, whether you’re elated or depressed. I’ll be there when you want company through a long, lonely day. I will be by your side through thick and thin, in sickness and in health because you’re my best friend and I cherish you so much.
Honestly, I can talk about you all day and all through the night, and even now I have a million more things to say. Be that as it may, too many words get to be good for nothing, so I’ll simply end it at “you’re the most magnificent individual I’ve ever met, and I can’t envision not having you in my life.
Even though we don’t see each other every day, I will never stop cherishing our friendship. Even if we don’t hear from each other every time, I will never stop reminiscing about you and the beautiful moment we’ve had together. And even though the sun stops shining and the cloud doesn’t pour down rain on the earth, I will never stop being your sweet friend. I love you beyond the stars, my sweetest friend.

Sweet Paragraphs To Send To Your Best Friend

Every good TV show, every good movie, has a dynamic duo. That’s us. I think we could have our own show, and honestly, I think people would watch it. Because we’re the kind of people that laugh so hard we start to cry. We have our own jokes, our own routine, our own language – on second thought, maybe the TV show isn’t such a great idea. The point is, you get me. You understand me. We understand each other. You know when I’m feeling down, the standard “I’m fine” is never enough for you. You just know better. And I’m glad you know better, because sometimes I feel like no one understands me. But you always do. You always know what to do and what to say. I don’t know how, but you’ve perfected the art of tending to me, myself, and I.
You were always that person I never expected to be friends with. I thought we would never get along. But when we came together, it was like something clicked and I knew that you would be a part of my life forever. I am so glad we didn’t remain strangers because your friendship feels like a lifelong gift that keeps on giving. Thank you for being my dear friend.
It is because of you that I have realized the essence of friendship. To be loved by the one you love is the greatest blessing of all time. Thank you for being my friend, for accepting me the way I am, and for loving me without any conditions. Thank you so much, best friend.
Nobody is flawless, but you are perfect for me. Nobody is perfect, but you overlooked my imperfections and remained a friend I can trust. From the bottom of my heart, I want you to know that I love you the way you are. Happy friends’ day.
You are such a strong and loving person to be around. You light up every room you enter, you never fail to make me laugh, and you always make sure that I am okay. You bring out the best in me when things are at their worst. I can’t wait to see what our friendship will bring us when we grow old. I hope we will be the same crazy best friends we are now, just with more grey hairs and wrinkles. I love you!
It makes me happy to know that I will always have you in my life, and you will always have me in your life too. I love you more than you will ever know, best friend. Thank you for being my person, whom I can turn to when no one else is there for me. There’s never a day that goes by where I am not grateful for you.
All the years that I have known you for, you haven’t changed at all. You are still the same beautiful and hardworking person I met the first day. But most importantly, the one thing that hasn’t changed is that you’re still here with me. You are still by my side. You have no idea how happy that makes me feel. I may not have many friends, but it doesn’t bother me because you’re the only friend that I am satisfied with, not only as my friend but also my best friend. You are one of the most precious and important people in my life. We may be far apart from each other, but I know that our bond is stronger than the distance between us. You are such a huge blessing to me. You may not see it now, but you have made a big impact in my life for the better. I appreciate you and all the kind gestures you’ve made and continue to make for me. You are one of the main reasons why I believe that the world can be better. Do not change anything about yourself because you are perfect just the way you are.
Each passing day reveals a new and better side of you. The more I know your beautiful soul, the more I fall for it. You are my special one, the one I will choose over everyone else. My dearest, purest and rarest best friend, I love you from the core of my heart. We met by chance, and now we are best friends by choice. You are the best thing that ever happened to me. I am grateful to God a thousand times for bringing you into my life and making me complete.
You mean the absolute world to me. I love you so much because you go above and beyond to be there for me when I need you. I am the luckiest person to have a friend like you. We’ve come so far, and I am so grateful to have you by my side every step of the way. You’re the sweetest and most supportive person I know. And I just know that our friendship will continue to grow as the days and years go by.
I might not be able to know everything about you, my dearest. Because each and every day is another avenue for me to know you a bit more than before; to get to be closer to you and cherish you so much more than ever before. And I want you to know that one of the reasons why I’m with you is to know you much better. I adore you, my beautiful friend.
Just as true friendship is not measured by how far we’ve been together but rather how well it has been between us. So also real bonding is not measured by the time we’ve spent together in each other company but rather the solace and solitude that comes with being with you, my awesome friend. I love you more than you know.
After looking back at all we have been through, I am more confident now than never before that you are a rare treasure that should be adored. You have been my backbone and my inspiration. My secrets are safer with you than they are with me. I love you, friend.
You are my best friend, my other half, my rock and my anchor, all rolled up into one lovely human being. You are the most special person in my life. We have such a rare bond that can’t be replicated by anyone else. You get me like no one else does. I love how much our friendship has developed from when we were little kids to our adult years. I adore you so much with every inch of my heart.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that I love you. Friendship is one of the most rewarding things life has to offer, and I refuse to take it for granted. I refuse to take you for granted. You, my best friend, my sister, my partner-in-crime. Even when all I can see is the worst in me, you still see the best. You remind me who I am, and who I want to be. You make me a better person. And while the world might tremble at the sight of the two of us (because, honestly, together we’re a force to be reckoned with), I know there’s no one I’d rather laugh and cry with.
Because of you, I laugh a little harder, cry a little less, and smile a whole lot more. Because of you, I’ve learned so many new things that I wouldn’t have learned if you weren’t by my side. Because of you, my experiences in life seem so much richer and so much fuller. Because of you, I can proudly say that there’s someone out there in the world who loves me for who I am – throughout all my craziness and boring moments and everything in between. Because of you, I can say that I am a better person who is made happier with you as my best friend.
I’m grateful to God for making our way crossed and brought you to me. We might not be together every day, but I am sure that you will always be there for me whenever I need you. Because your friendship is like the sunrise which I can’t always have throughout my day, but I’m certain that you will always be there each time I wake up to the break of a new dawn. I love you more than love itself, my best friend.
You are my mirror and my shadow. You are my mirror because you’d never lie to me. You’d always show me who I truly am. And you’d never let me go out of the house wearing an awful outfit. And you are my shadow, too. You never leave my side. You’re always there for me when I need you. And when life shines brightly on me, I feel your presence so much more because I know you’re supporting me through it all.
If our friendship was to be a big beautiful building; I would be the ground, to protect you from every creepy thing and I would be the roof, to be a shade over you during the rainy day; I would be the wall to shield you from the scourging dart of failures; I would be the door, to close every disappointment behind you and I would be the window, so that you can always see clearly every opportunity within your reach. I love you to the moon and back, sweetheart.
I know you’re my best friend because I don’t need to talk to you every single day. I don’t need to be around you all the time. In fact, we can go for weeks without talking. But as soon as we get together, it’s as if we had never stopped talking. Thank you for being my best friend.
My dearest best friend. I hope you stay in my life forever because our friendship is one of the best things to ever happen to me. You light up my life like no other. There is too much to do together. Also, you’re always the person who can bring sunshine to my heart. I love you, my dear best friend.

Actually difficult time is a best time which realizes us about the value and importance of true friends. The people having true friends in the life are really blessed with most precious gifts. Making number of friends in the life does not matter with the quality of friendship. Friends are the real supporter in life who teaches us how to face difficulties of life. They are the real well wishers of us who changes our bad viewpoints about anything for good.

How to Write a Tribute for a Friend

When writing a tribute for a friend, you will probably think about the occasion first. Tributes are often a part of both happy and sad occasions -- including weddings, anniversaries, reunions and award ceremonies, as well as memorial services and funerals. Interestingly, though, lightness and humor can be just as acceptable at a sad occasion as at a joyous one. What counts the most is your knowledge and appreciation of the person himself.

Think about and make notes on the person's worth and accomplishments -- these are in large part what tributes are all about. How much and what you should say about accomplishments, though, depends on your relationship with the person and with the other people in your audience. If you are a coworker, for example, you'll probably know things about the person's contributions to the organization that others will not know and will appreciate hearing about. If you know the person only as a friend, you can speak about more personal accomplishments.

Brainstorm or make a list of personal characteristics that make your friend special -- virtues like patience, kindness, loyalty and trustworthiness and also those little "faults" everyone has. Maybe your friend does not suffer fools gladly; perhaps he is extremely absent-minded or does not know how to coordinate his attire. Such little faults make people who they are too.

Brainstorm specific stories about your friend that illustrate what makes him who he is. Did he once jump your car for you at five in the morning in the dead of winter? Did he give up golf, his favorite pastime, when he became a father so he could spend more time with his baby? Has he been known to drive all the way to work still wearing his pajamas? What about the time he applied weed killer instead of fertilizer to his entire lawn?

Organize what you want to say. A chronological order using the stories may work well. Other ways to organize are by the accomplishments and by the virtues and "faults" you have written down. A joke or a quote, either serious or funny, can be a good way to begin a tribute.

Write from your notes so you have a "script" to speak from or a written version of the tribute. Tributes are inherently personal, so "write the way you talk" is probably a good guideline.

  • Do not tell stories that could be embarrassing with permission.
  • Do not tell embarrassing stories or secrets without your friends permission.

Become a pro at giving a speech in 2024

Jun 22, 2024

Posted by: Regine Fe Arat

Giving a speech can be daunting, but it’s an incredible opportunity to inspire, persuade and make a lasting impact on your audience.

Whether you're speaking at a conference, a wedding or in a classroom, the ability to deliver a powerful speech is a valuable skill that can open doors and create meaningful connections.

From Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech to Steve Jobs' commencement address at Stanford University, we’ve seen many amazing speeches. History is full of speeches that have inspired generations and shaped the world.

In this comprehensive guide, we'll walk you through the essential steps to crafting and delivering a memorable speech that will leave a lasting impression on your listeners.

Crafting an effective main message

At the heart of every great speech is a clear, compelling message. This main idea or theme is what you want your audience to take away from your speech.

To craft an effective message, start by asking yourself what you want your audience to think, feel or do after hearing your words.

Once you have a clear goal in mind, distill your message into a single, powerful statement that sums up your main point.

Imagine you're giving a speech about the importance of volunteering. Your main message might be: "Giving our time and talents to others can create a more compassionate and connected world."

Connecting with your audience through body language

Your body language impacts how your audience perceives and engages with your speech.

It's important to use nonverbal cues that convey confidence, warmth and authenticity to create a strong connection with your listeners.

Some key body language tips to keep in mind include:

  • Maintaining eye contact: Look directly at your audience members, making brief but meaningful eye contact throughout the room.
  • Using gestures : Emphasize key points and add visual interest to your speech by using natural, expressive gestures.
  • Smiling : A genuine smile can put your audience at ease and create a positive, welcoming atmosphere.
  • Standing tall : To project confidence and authority, maintain good posture with your shoulders back and your feet planted firmly on the ground.

Using natural adrenaline to boost confidence

It's normal to feel nervous before giving a speech, and you can use these feelings to boost your confidence and performance.

The key is to reframe your nerves as excitement and use that energy to fuel your passion and enthusiasm for your topic.

Some techniques for channeling your adrenaline in a positive way include:

Power posing

Before your speech, take a few minutes to stand in a confident, big stance (such as the Superman pose) to increase your sense of power and self-assurance.

Positive self-talk

Use affirmative statements to remind yourself of your strengths and abilities, such as "I am well-prepared and ready to share my message."

Visualizing success

Picture yourself delivering your speech with clarity, confidence and impact, with your audience responding positively to your words.

Preparing for a successful speech

Effective speech writing involves a systematic process of researching, organizing and refining your content:

Choose and cite authoritative sources

First, you need to research your topic. Look for compelling facts, statistics and examples to illustrate your key points and make your message more memorable.

To give your speech credibility and impact, choose sources that support your key points. Look for references that are:

  • Reputable : Look for information from well-known, respected organizations, institutions or people in your field.
  • Current : Use the most up-to-date information available to ensure accurate content.
  • Relevant : Select sources that directly support your main points and contribute to your overall message.

When citing your sources in your speech, credit the original authors or creators properly. This demonstrates your commitment to academic integrity and helps your audience trust the information you're presenting.

Some common ways to cite sources in a speech include:

  • Verbal attribution : Mention the author or organization name when referencing their work, such as "According to a recent study by Harvard University..."
  • Slides or handouts : If you're using visual aids, include a list of references or sources for your audience to refer to later.

Draft a compelling speech summary

Next, summarize your speech's main point or argument. This is usually best near the end of your introduction as a roadmap for the rest of your speech.

To craft the best summary, consider the following tips:

  • Be specific: Avoid broad statements — focus on a clear, specific claim or argument.
  • Be arguable: Present a perspective or position with evidence and reasoning.
  • Be concise: Aim for a single sentence that captures your main point clearly and directly.

For example, if you're giving a speech on the benefits of meditation, your summary might be: "Regular meditation practice can reduce stress, improve focus and promote overall well-being."

Outline your speech

Once you have a solid foundation of information and your main argument, begin outlining your speech.

Break your content down into logical sections, such as an introduction, main body and conclusion. Within each section, organize your points to flow naturally and build toward your message.

As you write your speech, focus on clear, concise language. It should be easy for your audience to understand and follow. Use short sentences, active voice and concrete examples to make your points more engaging and memorable.

Remember to also include transitions between sections to help your audience follow your train of thought and see the connections between your ideas.

If the audience needs a call to action, include it in the conclusion.

Tighten up sentence structure and flow

The way you structure your sentences and paragraphs can impact how your audience understands and engages with your speech.

To create a clear and compelling flow, consider the following tips:

  • Vary your sentence lengths: Alternate between short, punchy sentences and longer ones to create a dynamic and engaging rhythm.
  • Use parallel structure: When listing ideas or examples, use the same grammatical structure for each item to create a sense of balance.
  • Use transitions: Phrases like "however," "in addition" and "as a result" show the connections between your ideas and help your audience follow your train of thought.

11 tips for effective speech delivery

Practice your microphone technique.

If you're using a microphone during your speech, take some time to practice with it beforehand.

Get a feel for the optimal distance and angle to hold the microphone, and experiment with your volume and tone to ensure everyone can hear you.

Remember, the microphone is there to project your voice, so you don’t need to yell into it.

Speak directly into the microphone. Avoid turning your head away while speaking as this can reduce the volume of your voice.

Timing is important

One of the most important things to remember when delivering a speech is to be concise.

Aim to keep your speech within the allotted time frame and avoid going off on tangents or including unnecessary details.

A good rule of thumb is around one minute of speaking time for each main point. A concise speech ensures you hold your audience's attention and drive home your key messages.

Consider what your audience wants to hear

When crafting and delivering your speech, keep your audience's needs and interests in mind.

Research your audience beforehand, and tailor your content and delivery style to their specific needs and preferences.

For example, if you're speaking to a group of experts in your field, you may want to use more technical language and discuss your topic in more detail.

However, a general audience will prefer more accessible language and less jargon. Focus on the broader essence of your message and keep it straightforward.

Pick a theme and stick to it

It's important to choose a clear theme and stick to it throughout a speech to create a cohesive and memorable presentation .

Avoid trying to cover too many different topics or ideas. A confusing, jumbled speech can quickly turn an audience off.

Instead, focus on developing a single, powerful theme that ties your main points together and reinforces your overall message.

For example, if you're giving a speech on the importance of sustainability, you might choose a theme like "Small changes, big impact.” You could use examples and anecdotes that illustrate how individual actions can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Speak slowly

When delivering your speech, it's important to speak at a pace that allows your audience to follow along and absorb your message.

Many speakers rush through their material when they're nervous, making it difficult for their audience to keep up.

To avoid this, practice speaking at a slower, more deliberate pace. Use pauses strategically to emphasize key points or give your audience time to process what you've said.

If you find yourself speeding up, take a deep breath and consciously slow down your delivery.

Tell a couple of jokes

Incorporating humor into your speech can be a great way to engage your audience and make your message more memorable.

A well-placed joke or funny anecdote can break the ice, lighten the mood and create a more relaxed and receptive atmosphere.

However, it's important to use humor carefully and ensure your jokes are appropriate and relevant to your topic. Avoid offensive or insensitive humor, and don't rely too heavily on jokes at the expense of your core message.

If telling jokes doesn’t come naturally, avoid them entirely or practice them until you sound like a seasoned comedian.

Don't be afraid to repeat yourself if you need to

Repetition is a powerful tool in speech-making, as it reinforces your key points and makes them more memorable.

A technique known as "the rule of three" suggests that people are more likely to remember information in groups of three.

So don't be afraid to repeat your primary message or points throughout your speech with slightly different language or examples each time.

Only use the visual aids you need

Visual aids, such as slides, charts or props, can reinforce your message and make your speech more engaging.

However, it's important to only include those that are truly necessary to support your points.

Avoid cluttering your presentation with too many slides or images, as this can detract from your overall message.

Instead, choose a few key visuals that are clear, relevant and easy to understand. Use them strategically throughout your speech to enhance your words.

Ask for feedback

One of the best ways to improve your speech delivery is to seek feedback from others.

Consider joining a public speaking group, course or Toastmasters club to practice your skills in a supportive environment.

You can also ask friends, colleagues or mentors to listen to your speech and provide feedback on your content, delivery and overall impact.

Another challenge of public speaking is being aware of your body language. When certain movements feel normal, you might not realize it’s distracting for those watching.

Ask a friend or colleague to watch you practice your speech and provide feedback on any awkward mannerisms.

They may notice that you fidget with your hands, sway back and forth or use filler words like "um" or "like" frequently.

Becoming aware of these habits means you can work to minimize them and project a more confident, polished presence on stage.

Remember that feedback is a gift, and constructive criticism can help you grow as a speaker.

Practice regularly

The key to becoming a confident and effective public speaker is regular practice. The more you practice your speech, the more comfortable and natural you'll feel when delivering it.

Dedicate time each week to work on your public speaking skills, whether you practice a specific speech or work on general techniques like vocal projection, gestures or eye contact.

Consider recording yourself speaking and watch the video to identify areas for improvement. You can also practice your speech in front of a mirror or with a small group of friends to build your confidence.

Look around the room

When delivering your speech, it's important to make eye contact with your audience to create a sense of connection and engagement.

However, many speakers make the mistake of focusing on just one or two people throughout their entire speech.

To avoid this, make a conscious effort to look around the room and make eye contact with people in different sections of the audience.

This will help you connect with a wider range of people and make your speech feel more inclusive and engaging.

Don’t let your gaze wander aimlessly or linger too long on anyone, as this can be distracting or uncomfortable for your audience.

Overcoming fear and nervousness

One of the most effective ways to calm your nerves before and during a speech is to practice deep breathing techniques.

Deep breathing slows down your heart rate, relaxes your muscles and calms your mind, which can help you feel more centered and focused.

To practice deep breathing:

  • find a quiet place where you can sit or stand comfortably,
  • place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly,
  • take a slow, deep breath in through your nose,
  • allow your belly to expand as you inhale,
  • hold the breath for a moment, then exhale slowly through your mouth,
  • feel your belly fall as you release the air,
  • repeat this process for several minutes and
  • focus on the sensation of the breath moving in and out of your body.

How to effectively handle impromptu speeches

Impromptu speeches can be particularly nerve-wracking, as they require you to think on your feet and organize your thoughts quickly.

To handle an impromptu speech effectively, try the following tips:

Take a moment to collect your thoughts

Before you start speaking, take a deep breath and give yourself a few seconds to gather your thoughts and choose a main point or theme to focus on.

Use a simple structure

Organize your speech into a basic structure, such as an introduction, three main points and a conclusion. This will help you stay focused and avoid rambling or getting off track.

Speak from experience

Draw on your experiences, knowledge and opinions to provide examples and anecdotes that support your main points. This will help you speak more authentically and confidently.

Embrace the unexpected

Remember that impromptu speeches are an opportunity to showcase your ability to think on your feet and adapt to new situations. Embrace the challenge and try to have fun with it.

Preparing for Q&A sessions and panel discussions

Many speeches are followed by a Q&A session or panel discussion, which can be an opportunity to engage with your audience and provide additional insights and perspectives on your topic. To prepare for these sessions, consider the following tips:

Anticipate common questions

Before your speech, brainstorm a list of questions that your audience may ask, and practice your responses. This will help you feel more prepared and confident when fielding questions.

Be concise and direct

When answering questions, aim to be concise and to the point, while still providing enough context and detail to fully address the question.

Defer to other experts

If you're part of a panel discussion, don't feel like you need to answer every question or dominate the conversation. Defer to other panelists when appropriate and build on their ideas to create a more dynamic and engaging discussion.

Stay positive and professional

Even if you receive a challenging or hostile question, try to remain positive and professional in your response. Avoid getting defensive or argumentative. Instead, focus on providing a thoughtful and measured perspective.

Examples of persuasive speeches

To help illustrate the techniques and strategies we've covered in this guide, let's take a look at a few examples of persuasive speeches that have made a lasting impact:

“The Power of Vulnerability" by Brené Brown

This popular TED Talk by researcher Brené Brown uses humor, personal stories and scientific data to argue that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness and that it's essential for building authentic connections and living a meaningful life.

"I Have a Dream" by Martin Luther King Jr.

This iconic speech, delivered during the 1963 March on Washington, is a powerful example of using rhetorical devices. King mastered the use of repetition, metaphors and emotional appeal to convey a message of hope and unity.

"The Danger of a Single Story" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

In this TED Talk, novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie uses personal anecdotes and storytelling to illustrate the importance of seeking out diverse perspectives and challenging stereotypes.

“Ain’t I A Woman?” by Sojourner Truth

Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in 1797 and escaped from her master in 1827. She’s a prime example of an early feminist and anti-slavery speaker. In her famous speech, ”Ain’t I A Woman?” she used repetition and thought-provoking questions to highlight the poor treatment of Black women.

"The Price of Shame" by Monica Lewinsky

In this powerful TED Talk, Monica Lewinsky draws on her own experiences with public shaming and cyberbullying to argue for a more compassionate and empathetic online culture.
