Virata Parvam review: Sai Pallavi delivers a moving performance

Virata parvam movie review: sai pallavi does stand out in her character with her innate innocence that lights up the screen. it feels odd when you see her wielding a gun or lobbing a grenade at the cops..

virata parvam movie review and rating

In Virata Parvam , when Vennela ( Sai Pallavi ) tells her cousin, who also happens to be her fiance, that she is walking away from the wedding as she has fallen in love with another man, he blames her father. He says it’s his father who has spoiled her by encouraging her to read books. His comment is an indictment of the power of books in opening up the imagination of young minds, who are otherwise docile and gullible. It’s not easy for him to manipulate her into settling for a life that’s allowed to her by society, instead of pursuing a life that she desires to live.

It’s books that infuse the spirit of free mind in Vennela. And it’s books that show the man of her dreams, Ravanna (Rana Daggubati). She did not fall in love with him because of his towering frame or for his looks or his reputation as a saviour of the weak. She falls in love with him over his revolutionary poems. She is head over heels in love with Ravanna and so she even adopts his religion: communism. She dedicates herself to the service of his god: revolution.

virata parvam movie review and rating

The same books that taught love to Vennela are also used by the cops to damn those who get killed in staged encounters. Those books are banned by the state. And the ones who read them are considered the enemy of the state. Vennela knows the risks and still chooses to leave behind her life of comfort and safety to find love that is hiding in the deepest parts of the jungles.

Vennela is a revolutionary in her own right. Her weapon is love, not guns and bullets. In the world of terror and treachery, not many could understand Vennela’s language of love. She is judged and people look at her as if she is gone crazy when she tells people about her desire to find Ravanna, confess her love for him and spend the rest of her life by his side. You can’t blame people entirely for not understanding her. Those who join the Naxal movement are usually the ones who have been wronged by the system. In other words, people seek out Naxalsim out of anger and vengeance. But, not every day, do they meet someone who seeks them out for the sake of love. Love in the jungle, with death following close behind, is difficult to understand. But, hey, the heart wants what the heart wants.

Not just in jungles dominated by communism, Vennela can’t even fit in the system ruled by capitalism. She thinks less and feels more. In a materialistic world, where everyone is motivated by some sort of personal interest, Vennela comes across as an anomaly.

Festive offer

And Sai Pallavi does stand out in her character with her innate innocence that lights up the screen. It feels odd when you see her wielding a gun or lobbing a grenade at the cops. As you know, she doesn’t fit into this design of violence and bloodshed. Not for nothing, they say, everything is fair in love and war.

Virata Parvam Movie Review: A striking confluence of revolution and romance

Rating: ( 3.5 / 5).

The first aspect that strikes you in  Virata Parvam , a story emanating from the confluence of revolution and love, is its continuous attempts to represent the amalgamation of these contrasting elements. The closest and most straightforward it comes to in this process is through the shot of Vennela (Sai Pallavi) enveloping the wall painting of the hammer and the sickle inside a heart. In a similar, more poetic shot, she cuts the same symbol on a leaf, with sunlight producing the shadow of the symbol. Vennela, who develops a deep reverence, which then turns into love, for Naxal leader Ravanna (Rana Daggubati) after getting inspired by his writings, describes herself as a butterfly drenched in red, the colour of communism. This dialogue also finds a visual iteration later, when a red butterfly is seen flying in front of the engraved communist symbol under which Vennala sits while waiting to meet the man who inspired her. Even the word  ‘Laal Salaam’  sees a brutally straightforward picturisation that connects to the entirety of Vennala’s character arc.

Cast: Sai Pallavi, Rana Daggubati, Priyamani, Naveen Chandra

Directed by: Venu Udugala

You see, despite the verbose nature of the film—filled with dialogues, slogans, poems and folklore tales about its central themes like revolution, resistance, and pursuit of love—the film keeps trying to make the most of the medium. These choices evoke some beautiful imagery tainted by the undercurrent of pain and violence. You might be looking at pleasing shots of these fighters marching through the lap of nature in its unadulterated glory, but we, just like them, cannot savour the beauty because the danger is omnipresent.

The milieu and the setting of the story are split between the picturesque and dilapidated, both haunted by oppression and the resistance the film takes sides with. Perhaps this is why the tension relents and a sense of safety prevails when the film is set in the thick of the forests, a mild safe haven for Ravanna and his comrades. Every time the action moves out of the forest, danger and death waft around. And the film manages to establish the threat without much reliance on graphic gore; perhaps our imagination and knowledge of real-life savagery help in preparing us for the violence and its possible repercussions. Overall, it lends the film a discomforting quality, keeping us on the edge for the most part as we await something terrible to happen. Moreover, we can discern that story is coming from someone who understands this life in and out. Else, we wouldn’t see a policeman (Banerjee) hailing from a backward community point out that while the majority of people being disposed of in this revolution belong to oppressed communities, the higher officials in safer spaces, on both the sides, hail from upper caste communities. That being said, while the writing makes the police its villain, we also get one ‘decent’ policeman who tries to help Vennela.

Virata Parvam  is a pure film. It’s an attribute that makes the film a heavy watch.  Acharya  featured its Naxal protagonist shaking a leg in a dance number. Even the celebrated  Sindhooram  tried to pack in as much as humour possible through Ravi Teja’s character before diverting its devotion to the subject. Venu Udugula, however, delivers an unflinching narrative where every scene, from the beginning to the last—even though some fall prey to redundancy—contributes to its soul. This can be off-putting for some, but it’s important to know that the film doesn’t try to please us much with whistle-worthy sequences. Yes, there are a few conventional ‘high’ moments, like the one where Ravanna assures an old man that he will avenge the murder of his daughter. However, the camera doesn’t romanticise Ravanna or his pledge, though. We get a static wide shot of the old man standing still as Ravanna walks away. When Vennela reads his writing for the first time--sitting in darkness while a beam of light from the window alludes to the epiphany she experiences--we get montages of Ravanna’s heroic acts interwoven with his inspiring voiceover. Despite a restrained Rana’s limited screentime, the writing and Suresh Bobbili's music make Ravanna’s spirit omnipresent.

Vennala’s pursuit of Ravanna, however, does get tiring after the halfway mark. Thankfully, Venu quickly understands that we have had enough of this journey, guided entirely by a terrific Sai Pallavi. Although the actor doesn’t try too hard acing the Telangana accent, it doesn’t really pull her out of the milieu. She is, without a doubt, the star of the film.

The period and rural setting provide cinematographers Dani Sanchez-Lopez and Divakar Mani a wide arena to play in and they are deftly complemented by Sri Nagendra’s production design that's equally authentic and cinematic. Take, for instance, the shot of a maimed Vennela lying on the floor in the police station after being subjected to torture. We see background light piercing through the gaps of wooden chairs cramped in the background; the background and the framing accentuates the plight of Vennela. Likewise, almost all the ‘good’ people in the story are, at least once in the film, shot using either a candle or other natural light source, surrounded by complete darkness, just like their lives. Such shots reaffirm that Venu Udugala is strong with his visual game.

Towards the end, Venu shares the real incident that instigated him to make the film and one can sense it in his making. After all, he treats it like a retelling of the Meerabai-Krishna love story itself. It's amusing how he draws parallels with the mythology despite setting their stories in an utterly real world.

Virata Parvam   might not be everyone’s cup of tea, and it’s certainly not an easy watch. It is not designed for perfunctory viewing and demands a certain level of attention and patience. But backed by unadulterated writing and strong visual treatment, it makes sure that many of its striking images will remain clung to you long after you leave the theatre.

Virata Parvam Movie Review: It's a Sai Pallavi show, Rana Daggubati lends support

Director venu udugula’s virata parvam is a chilling tale of unconditional love. featuring rana daggubati and sai pallavi, the film draws your attention from the very first frame..

virata parvam movie review and rating

Rana Daggubati

Right from its announcement to the posters and teasers, Virata Parvam spelt intrigue. And it drove people to invest in the film despite the long wait. Did the wait, albeit a Covid-induced one, finally pay off? We say yes.

A pregnant woman on her way to the hospital gets stuck in a crossfire between the police and the Naxalites. A Naxalite (Nivetha Pethuraj), who is also a doctor, oversees the delivery. A baby girl is born and she names her Vennela after the moon. In seconds, she screams 'Laal Salaam', gets shot and dies. That baby grows up to be Sai Pallavi. In a poignant dialogue, Vennela later says 'war kills many people, but it gave birth to her'. So true.

During her formative years, she stumbles upon Aranya AKA Ravanna’s (Rana Daggubati) poetry. She gets inspired and falls in love - a Meerabai kind of love. But for Ravanna, love is a disease.

Only some films have the potential to linger in your mind even after it is over. And Virata Parvam is one such film. Director Venu Udugula’s Virata Parvam begins on a slow note. We don’t really understand why Vennela falls in love with Ravanna. Sure, his poetry is magical. But, is that enough? It is only as the film progresses that we understand why Vennela does what she does.

Vennela is both an innocent soul and fiercely adamant. In short, Virata Parvam is Sai Pallavi’s film. Rana Daggubati’s Ravanna ably supports her and lets her take the limelight. As far as Sai Pallavi is concerned, she could sell any character, and it only makes you wonder what else she has up her sleeve.

Some carefully crafted scenes will make you tear up as well. Take, for example, the emotional scene between Vennela and her father Ramulu (Sai Chand) in the second half. All you need in life is a parent who understands you. And Sai Pallavi’s expressions in that will stay with you long after. Similarly, the last 20 minutes of the film will leave you at the edge of your seats.

Apart from Sai Pallavi and Rana Daggubati, Priyamani, Naveen Chandra and Rahul Ramachandra have delivered what was required of them. Cinematographers Dani Sanchez Lopez and Divakar Mani have created magic with their frames. The powerful imagery in the climax is one of the best shot sequences in recent times. Virata Parvam is also like a musical, thanks to music director Suresh Bobbili’s haunting score.

Overall, Virata Parvam is a moving tale about two revolutionaries that hits the right note. With terrific performances and brilliant music, the film is sure to invoke emotions from everyone.

What's Behind

Rana, Sai Pallavi's Virataparvam directed by Venu Ugudula overcame many rumors, negative news, and many delays before finally hitting the theatres across the world. Ahead of the film's theatrical release on June 17, 2022, the film's promotions reached the Skytop and many celebrities heaped praises after watching the special screening. The trailer even caught the attention of the Bollywood makers. Let us see whether Virataparvam lived up to all those expectations.

Story Review

Young girl Vennela (Sai Pallavi) from the interior of Telangana, motivated by her father (Sai Chand), keeps on reading various literature and great works and in the process gets inspired by the poems written by Ravanna (Rana) using the pen name Aranya. Vennela falls in love with his poems and goes in search of Ravanna, who happens to be the top commander of the Naxalites. To find out whether Vennela meets Ravanna and how Ravanna receives her and how Comrade Bharatakka (Priyamani), another comrade (Naveen Chandra), Ravanna's mother Rubee (Zarina Wahab), police officer Pratap (Banjerjee), Human rights activist Shakuntala (Nandita Das)are connected and what role another Naxal (Nivetha Pethuraj) played, watch Virataparvam on screen.

Sai Pallavi as Vennela

Artists, Technicians Review

Sai Pallavi is known for her powerful and impactful performances. She came up with a stellar performance and with the stunning expressions and emotions, she carried the film on her shoulders. She turned even normal scenes to another level weaving a web of magic. She turned the soul of the film. She delivered the dialogues in a powerful and emotional manner making everyone glued to her despite the presence of many stars.

Rana complimented her with his performance. His settled performance and the scenes featuring him and Sai Pallavi stood out. Sai Chand and Easwari Rao performed as Sai Pallavi's parents. Rahul Ramakrishna is good and Banerjee as the cop made an impact. Priyamani, Nandita Das,Zarina Wahab did justice for their roles.

Director Venu Udugula came up with an intense love story in the Naxal backdrop. He drew inspiration from the real-life incidents of a woman Sarala who fell in love with the Naxal in Warangal. The start is interesting with the way Sai Pallavi is introduced in an impactful manner like the birth of Vennela. Nivetha Pethuraj made her presence felt in a powerful cameo. From then on Sai Pallavi took over and created a powerful impact. Rana played an important role and looked mean and lean and put up an impressive performance.

Till the time, Sai Pallavi goes in search of Rana, the narration is interesting but from then on it turned predictable and routine. The love and feelings of Sai Pallavi for Rana are not highlighted in a proper manner and also how Rana who was a hard-core Naxalite got moved and accepted her love is not convincing. The first half ends on an interesting note. However, the second half turned out more of a war between cops and the Naxals and everything became unidimensional.

Venu Udugula's screenplay took a beating and the lack of commercial angle undid the impact. He failed to make the optimum use of actors like Zareena Wahab, Eswari Rao, Sai Chand, Banerji, Nagineedu, Rahul Ramakrishna, Devi Prasad, Anand Ravi, Anand Chakrapani, and others. Priyamani and Naveen Chandra also got limited scope to perform but they made their presence felt.

The music of Suresh Bobbili is in sync with the storyline. The songs are situational. The song introducing Rana is impactful. The background score tuned by Suresh Bobbili elevated the scenes but at times, it went out of sync. Dani Sanchez-Lopez and Divakar Mani's cinematography captured the scenic locations in a natural and realistic manner. The editing of Sreekar Prasad left a lot to be desired especially in the second half. Production values are good.

Rating Analysis

Sai Pallavi, Rana's Virataparvam directed by Venu Udugula and promoted by the makers turned out to be the out and out Sai Pallavi's show. She eclipsed everyone and created an intense, emotional, and soulful storm. However, the lack of commercial elements, real twists and turns, uninteresting screenplay, and missing romantic elevations turned the film into an average entertainer. Considering all these elements CJ goes with a 2.5 rating for Virataparvam.

VIRATA PARVAM MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Virata Parvam is a period romantic film written and directed by Venu Udugula and produced by Sudhakar Cherukuri under the banner Suresh Productions. It stars Rana Daggubati and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles while Priyamani, Nandita Das, Easwari Rao and others play supporting roles. The music is composed by Suresh Bobbili, and the cinematography is handled by Dani Salo and Diwakar Mani.

The film is set in the backdrop of the Naxalite movement in Telangana in the early 90's and is primarily the story of a girl, Vennela (Sai Pallavi) who falls in love with the leader of the Naxalite movement, Ravanna (Rana Daggubati). The film deals with this romance while also touching upon other aspects such as explaining what the Naxal Movement did for the people, its clash with the Police department and more.

It is often said that love is a revolution by itself and has a lot of politics involved in it. Class, caste, gender and many other factors play its part in deciding whether a love is successful or not, and Venu Udugula understands this well. This is not a romantic story where everything goes well once Ravanna and Vennela get together.

When Vennela confesses her love towards Ravanna, he is not afraid to say yes to her. He's in a dilemma - whether to prioritise her over the larger cause he is fighting for. He considers love to be a thing for the upper class but Vennela retorts saying even communists like Karl Marx, Lenin and Mao have had love lives. Again, saying yes to get would mean she also becomes a target for the state. It is these plot conflicts that keep the film engaging till the end.

The film also makes us wonder if Sai Pallavi can choose a script where her character is not defined properly. Virata Parvam is one more film where she gets to show the audience what an amazing performer she is. At times, her performance overshadows everyone else in the scene, and she carries the entire film on her shoulders. The other actors play second fiddle to support her well.

While the screenplay and editing could have been marginally better, the conviction and uncompromised attitude of the director is seen in every single frame. The film speaks its politics unapologetically and that's something that must be appreciated. The camera work and music stand out, and lifts many scenes several notches higher.

Overall, Virata Parvam is an unusual love story that might not entertain you but will engage you well. If you're someone interested in politics, this is a must watch. If you're not into politics, even then it's a must watch just for Sai Pallavi, who gives her blood and sweat, quite literally.

What’s it about?

The 1990s. Telangana. Daughter of a voggu katha exponent, Vennela (Sai Pallavi) gets drawn to the poetry of Ravanna (Rana Daggubati), a Naxal commander whose pen name goes by Aranya. Not only does she admire his inspiring poems, but she also starts loving him after knowing and seeing his revolutionary activities.

Inspired by the Meera Bai’s story her father narrated, Vennela leaves her home in search of finding Ravanna who operates with his ‘Dalam’ in a deep forest. After facing many hurdles, she finally meets Ravanna and expresses her feeling toward him. Being an idealistic Naxal leader who dedicated his life to the cause, Ravanna dismisses her love and admonishes her.

To what length does Vennela go to win him in that troubled terrain and period? Will she finally get what she wanted?

Four years after he impressed us with his debut feature ‘Needi Naadi Oke Katha’ director Venu Udugula chose a very different story for his second film. ‘Virata Parvam’ is his new directorial that is based on incidents he saw in his hometown during his college days, and a Warangal woman named Sarala inspired the story.

Set in the 1990s, ‘Virata Parvam tells the story of a Telangana rural girl who embarks on an extraordinary journey to meet a Naxal leader with whom she had fallen in love. We have seen Mani Ratnam’s ‘Dil Se’ in which the male protagonist played by Shah Rukh Khan follows a liberationist woman (Manish Koirala) to win her love. In ‘Virata Parvam’, the female protagonist takes a similar journey, though the two films are different from each other.

Essentially, ‘Virata Parvam’ falls in the genre of a tragic love story but director Venu Udugula has tried documenting the turbulent period in Telangana with much sincerity and honesty.

Films that have dealt with Naxalism are not new to us, but Venu Udugula places the story from the perspective of women. The stories of a mother who is waiting for her son to return home as he left her for fighting the cause, and a human rights activist who lost her husband in the same fight believing that she continuing her husband’s idealism make this film a different from earlier films.

In one scene, Rana’s mother, played by Zarina Wahab, tells him, “Shanti tupaki gottamlo ledu, aadapilla premalo undi” (You don’t get peace with a gun, but with the girl’s love). In another scene, Sai Pallavi’s father confesses to her that he understands her path and tells her that society always derides if one takes a new path.

Venu Udugula’s poetic touch and his honesty come alive in such sequences. He has used poetry excessively to narrate this story, which may not work for the majority of the regular audiences.

Despite some reservations about this film, two aspects impressed me very much – Sai Pallavi’s acting and the conclusion of the story. The climax is its soul.

The director has avoided the temptation of falling into commercial trappings to tell this story. Still, the middle act of the film is far from appreciable. It gives a déjà vu feel in these portions. Plus, Rana’s character is flat. The encounter sequences have not been handled properly. Such issues and the middle portion have lessened the impact.

We all know Sai Pallavi switches into any role that she undertakes like a glove. She has loved Vennela’s character. She delivers a mesmerizing performance. She dominates the entire show.

Rana suits well, but his look has inconsistency due to his health problems in the middle of the production. The stellar cast of the film which includes Nandita Das, Sai Chand, Priyamani, Rahul Ramakrishna, and Zareena Wahab have delivered excellent performances.

Among the technicians, cinematographers, and music director have put in their best talents. The action sequences lack the impact, especially the encounter episodes lack dhum.

As a writer and director, Venu Udugula’s sincerity is appreciable.

Bottom-line: ‘Virata Parvam’ is an unflinching look at 90s Naxalism in Telangana and paints the women’s stories in a conflict period. The film doesn’t entirely engage us. The film doesn’t entirely engage us, and the middle portion goes helter-skelter. Yet, it is an honest effort from director Venu Udugula. Sai Pallavi’s sterling performance towers over. It’s a niche film and may appeal to people who love serious cinema.

After witnessing a lot of delay, Virata Parvam finally saw the light of the day just like how Vennela finds Aranya in a deep jungle. Venu Udugula, who made his directorial debut Needi Naadi Oke Katha in 2018, gets an intense love story set against naxal backdrop for his second film. He chooses talented Sai Pallavi and Rana Daggubati as the lead cast to narrate his story. Let’s check out our take on the film.

What is it about? Vennela (Sai Pallavi), an ordinary girl born in a village of Telangana, is heavily inspired by her father’s Oggu Katha and literature. Vennela happens to read the poetry of most-wanted naxal leader Aranya alias Ravanna (Rana Daggubati) and falls deeply in love with him. To find her love, she leaves home and struggles to find the hidden Ravanna. When she does meet him, he doesn’t accept her love. How Vennela and Ravanna’s paths cross and whether Vennela wins her love form the crux of Virata Parvam.

Performances Sai Pallavi has breathed life into the role of Vennela. With flawless expressions and emotions in her eyes, face, Pallavi delivered an outstanding performance. She deserves laurels and awards for this act. Rana Daggubati is terrific as Naxal leader Ravanna who makes a strong impact. Yet, he is easily dominated by Pallavi. Rana deserves appreciation for accepting the film that has Sai Pallavi taking centrestage. Priyamani and Naveen Chandra as Comrades Bharathakka and Raghanna get noticeable roles that are part of a crucial twist in the film. But their roles are mostly predictable and stereotyped. Nandita Das adds value to the role she played. Sai Chand, as usual, impressed as Sai Pallavi’s father. Rahul Ramakrishna is confined to a limited role. But he has a powerful scene in a police station. Nivetha Pethuraj is seen in a blink-and-miss cameo. Overall, Virata Parvam has intense and realistic performances.

Technicalities Director Venu Udugula’s love for poetry is seen in his writing. This writing is supported by perfect visuals and powerful performances. Udugula succeeded in striking a fine balance between poetry and visuals. Composer Suresh Bobbili nailed it with his background score. Cinematography work (Dani Sanchez-Lopez and Divakar Mani) is brilliant. In fact, music and visuals become part of the narrative. At 2 hour 30 minutes, the film is prolonged. Chopping some unwanted scenes would have been better.

Thumbs Up Sai Pallavi and Rana’s Intense Performances Naxal Episodes

Thumbs Down Slow Pace Cinematic Liberties Flat Screenplay

The justification of the title is just like how Pandavas fight Kauravas by hiding, the Ravanna Dalam is fighting police and system in similar manner. This may not be the apt justification but director Venu feels it’s apt. Virata Parvam is based on real-life of late Comrade Sarala. With fiction, Venu adapts it for big screen.

The film begins in a hamlet where a woman (Easwari Rao) is having labour pains on a rainy night amidst a cross-fire between naxals and police. A doctor-turned-naxal (Nivetha) helps the woman deliver the baby girl and names her Vennela (Sai Pallavi). Vennela is born in a tense atmosphere with blood stains. Virata Parvam is largely Vennela’s story and her love with naxal leader Ravanna. But Ravanna’s love is his ideology and movement. There is lack of hope for Vennela’s love as Ravanna is hunted by police troops. Killings and encounters are an everyday sight. Yet, Vennela is firm, strong-willed in her love. This is what transforms her into Comrade Vennela.

But the director succeeded in depicting the lives of naxals and their movement. He gives us insights into the world of Maoists and their party organisation. The film presents a uni-dimensional view of Maoism. The contrary view on naxalism in democracy is missing. Yet this is what director Venu opted to present the story of Vennela. Undoubtedly, it is Sai Pallavi’s show. Rana Daggubati gracefully lets Pallavi take the centrestage.

Plot-wise Virata Parvam is a love story of Vennela with Ravanna. Whereas, Ravanna’s love is his ideology. This is the conflict point. However, the premise and background in which the story is set makes all the difference. The first half is all about Vennela’s devotion and love for Ravanna. It is parallelled with Meera Bhai’s love for Lord Krishna. What makes Vennela’s love for Ravanna unconditional? She reasons saying, ‘Love doesn’t need any reason’. Venu stresses this point. The second-half is a cat-and-mouse chase between police and naxal gang. As cops fail to nab Ravanna, they plot a mind game. Here the film gets interesting. But what comes at the end is something unexpected.

The film has its own shortcomings. The concept of naxalism isn’t appealing to all. It is not embraced by a large set of audience, at least in the present era. Post Covid-19 pandemic, audiences are wanting to witness commercial cinema with entertainment. That is not what Virata Parvam offers. It is only for serious viewers. The film also has little action. It is filled with emotions, love and drama amidst a naxal backdrop. The Ravanna’s team has no major achievements, barring helping a father take revenge for her daughter’s death and a few others. Largely, police make the attack and Ravanna & comrades fight in defence. It may be a realistic portrayal, but on-screen, the audience would expect to see more heroic events of the protagonist.

The film’s narration gets sluggish post-interval. But that’s when the real-story of the film unravels. The screenplay is flat. The film goes on predictable note. The director subtly includes romance between Vennla and Ravanna. But it doesn’t last long either. The pre-interval episode and gripping, emotional climax make Virata Parvam a tale of love and loss. The naxal episodes are well-shot. Sai Pallavi and Rana’s powerful performances make this intense love story work at portions.

In a nutshell, Virata Parvam is certainly not the regular Telugu cinema one gets to see. It is unique and different. It is only for a certain set of audience. The moot question is whether the film works commercially or not.

Bottom Line: Laal Salaam Vennela

Rating: 2.75/5

Virata Parvam Movie Review

Release Date : June 17, 2022

123telugu.com Rating : 3/5

Starring: Rana Daggubati, Sai Pallavi, Priyamani, Nanditha Das, Rahul Ramakrishna, Devi Prasad, Anand Chakrapani and others

Director: Venu Udugula

Producer: Sudhakar Cherukuri

Music Director: Suresh Bobbili

Cinematography : Dani Sanchez Lopez, Divakar Mani

Editor : Sreekar Prasad

Virata Parvam is a film that has been in the making for quite some time now. The film starring Rana and Sai Pallavi has finally hit the screens today and let’s see how it is.

The story is set in the late 70s in Telangana when the Naxal movement was at its peak. Vennela(Sai Pallavi) belongs to a lower caste and is quite inspired by the revolutionary poetry written by a famous Naxalite Ravanna(Rana Daggubati). Without even meeting Ravanna, Vennela falls in love with him and leaves her home, and starts her journey to find Ravanna. After a crazy turnaround of events, she crosses paths with Ravanna. Will Ravanna accept her love? What problems did Vennela face in her journey? and what happened to her, in the end, is the whole story of the film.

Plus Points:

Firstly, the makers need to be appreciated for producing a subject which is devoid of commercial aspects and is high on content. Though the Naxal backdrop has been showcased in many films, Virata Parvam has a love angle that has been induced in a very mature manner and this is where the film scores brownie points. The making, visuals, and BGM are major assets to the film which is gripping for the most part.

Rana is choosing his roles quite effectively and he as Ravanna is superb. He does not get to do much in the first half but comes to his own in the second part and is the major pillar of the film. Rana’s screen presence superbly suits the tone of the film.

Priyamani and Naveen Chandra are impressive in their respective roles. The atrocities faced by the people and how Naxals help them have been brought out quite well. The action sequences and suspense factors are maintained quite effectively. The climax is a special aspect and will leave you with a lump in your throat.

Last but not the least, Virata Parvam is Sai Pallavi’s show all the way. We all know what a solid performer she is but, in Virata Parvam, she takes her acting prowess to another level. The way she brings out her love for Ravanna, fights for her cause, and shows the emotional turmoil, to find him is brought out superbly by Sai Pallavi. As hero Venkatesh said in the pre-release event, Sai Pallavi has indeed given an award-winning performance.

Minus Points:

Right from the first scene, Virata Parvam is a serious drama and is not for the ones who like commercial cinema. There is no entertainment or romance that will be showcased and one should be aware while watching this film.

The second half of the film goes down a bit. The tempo in the narrative slows down as some repeated scenes of the Naxal backdrop are showcased for no reason. After showcasing Sai Pallavi’s revolution and love, one would feel that the climax should have more drama. Though it is decent, more drama and detail would have made things quite effective drama-wise.

Technical Aspects:

Virata Parvam is high on technical aspects. The camerawork by Dani Sanchez-Lopez and Divakar Mani is one of the best in recent times. The period backdrop, forest visuals, and action blocks are showcased superbly.

The manner in which the production design is executed is just amazing. The costume design and lyrics for the songs are amazing. Yet another major highlight is Suresh Bobbili’s music. His songs are superb and more gripping was his BGM which elevates the film to another level.

Coming to the director Venu Udugula, he has done a very good job with the film. His writing is sharp and has enough scope for the drama to be elevated. The way he has mixed love and revolution through Sai Pallavi’s character is very good. He has worked hard on each aspect and has extracted superb performances from his cast which is perfect. The sensibilities and ideologies of each character are brought out well and the way he ends the film is also emotional and proves his grip over drama.

On the whole, Virata Parvam is a revolutionary drama that has drama and emotions in the right quotient. The second half becomes a tad dull and predictable but the performance keeps you engaged. As the film’s genre is serious and revolutionary not everyone will connect to it right away. Barring this, Rana and Sai Pallavi make sure that Virata Parvam is worth a watch for its honest attempt and sensible narration.

Virata Parvam Review: Honest But Not Effective

Virata Parvam Review: Honest But Not Effective

Movie: Virata Parvam Rating:  2.5/5 Banner: SLV Cinemas Cast: Rana, Sai Pallavi, Sai Chand, Priyamani, Naveen Chandra, Eeswari Rao, Nandita Das, Benarjee, and others Music: Suresh Bobbili Cinematography: Divakar Mani, Dani Sanchez-Lopez Editor: Sreekara Prasad Art: Nagendra Producer: Sudhakar Cherukuri Written and Directed by: Venu Udugula Release Date: June 17, 2022

Sai Pallavi and Rana starrer “Virata Parvam” has generated a tremendous craze since the first teaser was released two years ago. The hype around it reached high with Sai Pallavi coming under the spotlight recently. Actors like Venkatesh praised Sai Pallavi and declared that she would walk away with a national award. Such has been the buzz.

Has the film really lived up to this hype? Let’s find out…

Story: The story is set in the 1990s. Vennela (Sai Pallavi) lives in a village near Warangal. She falls in love with Aranya aka Ravanna (Rana) as soon as she starts reading his poetry. Ravanna is a committed Naxalite leader who shuns all bonds.

When Vennela comes to him running away from home and expresses her love, he doesn’t reciprocate. But Vennela is ready to join in his cause, is even ready to die for him.

Will their love succeed when police are planning covert operations to nab Ravanna and when other Naxal leaders express their reservations about Vennela joining their team without due process?

Artistes’ Performances: To say that Sai Pallavi is terrific is an understatement. The immensely talented actress lives in the role. She is the soul of the film. Frankly, Rana doesn’t get much space in the first half of the film. It is her journey and her performance that dominates throughout.

To his credit, Rana lets Sai Pallavi do everything. He plays his role with all sincerity. However, his appearance (as the film was in the making for a long time and due to his health issues) lacks consistency.

Among other actors, Sai Chand, Nandita Das, and Zarina Wahab give the best.

Technical Excellence: Music director Suresh Bobbili has come up with songs that flow with the theme. The cinematography is another excellent aspect of the technical prowess the film possesses. Dialogues are neat. The editing should have been sharper.

Highlights: Sai Pallavi’s mesmerizing performance The ending of the story Honest narrative Some touching moments

Drawback: Docudrama feel Shootout scenes Middle portions

Analysis In Mahabharata, Pandavas in their exile get prepared for their final war. This chapter is known as “Virata Parvam”. There’s a connection between Mahabharata with the theme of director Venu Udugala’s film. Hence the title.

The film is primarily a love story but we see other points like Naxalism, covert operations, and ideological differences. Inspired by the life of Sarala, Venu Udugula wrote the story of “Virata Pravam”. Sai Pallavi’s character is loosely based on Sarala, whose love story with a Naxalite leader became a topic in the bygone era.

The first half of the film is devoted to Sai Pallavi’s efforts to reach Rana, her travails, and tribulations. This part has some engaging moments, but it is too lengthy and repetitive.

As we have said before about the title, the real drama in the story happens when Sai Pallavi joins Rana’s team and that takes their story to a dramatic turn leading to an explosive culmination. The climax portions have made a huge difference.

The biggest problem is that the director has narrated more like a docu-drama than as an emotional film. Films with a Naxalism backdrop in the past have explored much of the content that we get to see in “Virata Parvam”. Krishna Vamsi’s “Sindhooram” featured many such moments. So, Venu Udugula should have curtailed them and shifted to the real drama.

Rana’s portions as a Naxalite leader are superficial. The shootout episodes are substandard. There is no stunning action. Nor are they unique. Agreed that the sole intention of the story is not to package it as an action drama but as an emotional story. Then, the shift should have been in that way.

The suspicious entry of Sai Pallavi and the connecting scenes are handled interestingly in the final part. But the same deft handling goes missing in other parts. Hence, the overall effect, despite the film’s honest treatment and efforts, is not that effective.

Venu Udugula provides the best part in the final episode and a couple of emotional moments. Though he has avoided clichés in many places, he should have made it tighter for a better effect.

On the whole, ‘Virata Parvam' has the right intentions, honest narrative, terrific performances, and above all the magical Sai Pallavi. But it also misses the opportunity to provide a riveting drama. Despite honesty, the film is a mixed bag: some portions are good, some are so-so. It may not appeal to regular audiences due to its docudrama nature.

Bottom line: Sai Pallavi's show

Virata Parvam Movie Review and Rating

Movie Review:  Virata Parvam Director:  Venu Udugula Producers :  D Suresh Babu and Sudhakar Cherukuri Music Director:  Suresh Bobbili Starring :   Rana Daggubati, Sai Pallavi, Priyamani and others Release date:  17th June 2022 Rating :   2.75/5

Virata Parvam Movie Review :  Virata Parvam starring Sai Pallavi , Rana Daggubati,  Priyamani, Nandita Das,  Zarina Wahab, Easwari Rao, Naveen Chandra, and Sai Chand, helmed by Venu Udugula has arrived at the theaters today on 17th June 2022. Let’s see the story of Virata Parvam.

Story:  Easwari Rao delivers Vennela (Sai Pallavi) during the fight between police and Naxalites. She belongs to a lower caste and is inspired by a  revolutionary poetry written by a Naxalite Ravanna (Rana Daggubati) . Without even meeting Ravanna, she   in love with him and starts her journey to find Ravanna . After overcoming all the hurdles, Vennela finally meets Ravanna. Will Ravanna accept Vennela’ love? What the problems she faces in her journey? What happens to her love? Form rest of the story.

 Plus Points:

  • Sai Pallavi
  • Rana Daggubati
  • Cinematography

 Minus Points:

  • Too much lag in the second half
  • Lack of entertainment

Performance:  One of the biggest assets of the film  Virata Parvam is the presence of  Sai Pallavi.  She takes her acting prowess to another level. Rana is brilliant in the role of Ravanna. He portrays toughness with amazing ease. His appearance, body languages, the way of showing expression, are highlighted. He excelled in this role. Naveen Chandra and Priyamani are ok but Sai Chand steals the show among the supporting artists. Zarina Wahab’s mother character is fine. The rest of the cast of Virata Parvam perform accordingly.

Technical:   The movie Virata Parvam is high on technical aspects. The conflict between love and revolution is impressive.  The climax touches everyone’s hearts.  Though the Naxal backdrop has been showcased in many movies, but Virata Parvam has a love angle that has been induced in a very mature manner. Suresh Bobbili’s songs, folk songs and background music are impressive. He provides an excellent background score. And the camera work is  fantastic.  The   forest visuals, period backdrop, and action blocks are showcased in interesting way. Editing is ok and the production values are top notch. The action sequences and suspense factors are maintained effectively.  Venu Udugula picks the sensitive subject and presented it in a very heartfelt and heart-warming way.

Analysis:  Virata Parvam is a wonderful tale of love story narrated in a Hard-Hitting way with great performances and heart-rending dialogues.  A classic cinema about love and revolution.
