Solar geysers have been around for more than a century.

The first solar water heaters were simple black-painted tanks mounted on the roof of your house.

Unfortunately, these relied entirely on the sun’s heat. That meant you could only get a hot bath on a very sunny day.

Fortunately for those of us who prefer a hot bath on a bitterly cold winter morning, solar geysers have improved since the early 1900s.

Today they produce hot water more efficiently and we’ve found a way to make them work even on a June morning.

How does a solar geyser work?

Solar water heaters have two main components. A solar thermal collector and a storage tank.

Sunlight is absorbed by the collector which heats the water or liquid.

If water is used, it moves up to the storage tank through convection where it sits until you need it.

If a heating liquid is used, the liquid is pushed by a pump to the storage tank where the water is heated through transference.

How a solar geyser works.

Will I get hot water on a cloudy day?

Solar water heaters use the available sunlight to give you hot water. It will still work on an overcast day.

However, since there isn’t as much sunlight, it won’t heat the water as it would on a bright sunny day.

Most solar geysers come with a thermostat and backup electric element for this reason.

When your solar geyser doesn’t heat the water to the required temperature, the backup electric element kicks in to “top up” the heat.

The backup kicks in only where the solar isn’t getting the water hot enough.

The system is automated so you don’t have to worry about the electric element working when it shouldn’t.

Will I get hot water in winter?

Solar geysers can work almost as well in winter as in summer.

But days are shorter in winter and the starting temperature of the water is much colder.

That means the geyser has to work that much harder to produce hot water. The same is true of a conventional electric geyser.

Also, there’s more demand for hot water on cold days.

Since a solar geyser has a backup electric element, it will still give you hot water if there isn’t enough sun.

Will I get hot water at night?

The water storage tank comes with insulation.

This ensures the water heated during the day is kept hot for longer.

Again, the electric element is there as a backup to maintain the water temperature.

How hot does the water get?

Both solar and electric geysers heat water up to 60⁰C.

How long it takes varies depending on factors like the angle and tilt of the solar geyser for example.

Typically, a solar geyser will heat a 300L tank in about 4-5 hours.

Types of solar geysers

Solar water heaters use different systems. They also range in size from 100L to 300L.

The most popular and easily available types of solar geysers in Zimbabwe and South Africa are Evacuated Tube and Flat Plate Collectors .

Evacuated Tube Collectors

Evacuated tube collectors use glass tubes and rely on convection for water heated in the tubes to rise to the storage tank.

The cooler water in the tank flows down into the collector, thus circulating through the system.

Because of their tube shape as opposed to being flat, ETCs can track the sun for longer. This makes them more efficient on overcast days and in winter.

Being that our conditions are extremely hot in South Africa , the use of evacuated tubes are recommended to be used in the following conditions to avoid overheating and wasting of water due to vacuum release.

Pumped Solar Geyser System (Retrofit)

Water from the geyser is needed to be re-heated and is required to be pumped up into the collector and back down once heated into the geyser.

Although more parts involved make this a higher maintenance option due to there being moving parts, it is also a cost-effective route as well as less of an eyesore due to the tank not being visible on the roof.

Thermosiphon Solar Geysers

Cold water is pushed into the solar water collector and is then heated by the sun. Because heat rises and cold sinks, all the hot water is automatically pushed to the top of the collector and into the geyser that is placed above the collector.

When the water cools it pushes the cold water back down into the collector and re-heats. This process happens with no aid of any mechanical means.

Closed Coupled Solar Geysers

The tubes go directly into the tank utilizing sleeves to connect it. These are direct thermosiphon systems so are purely designed for areas that are not extremely cold in the winter time.

What is a Solar Geyser?

A solar geyser is a sun-powered water heating system (heat pump) that is generally installed on rooftops. They are heated directly or via light-concentrating mirrors and can be independent systems or part of a hybrid system (using gas or electric heaters).

How do Solar Geysers work?

There are two distinct actions of a solar system that must be considered when looking for the “right one”, water heating and water flow.

Water Heating

The two main ways in which water is heated inside a solar geyser system is via a direct system or indirect system.

  • Direct System: This is the most basic or simple system. In summary, the water that is inside the collection tank is heated directly from the sun.
  • Indirect System: An indirect system uses a Heat Transferring Fluid (HTF), typically an anti-freeze such a propylene glycol to heat the water indirectly. The benefit of this system is that the HTF is the material that gets heated by the sun, it then transfers the heat to the water, acting as a “middle man”. The HTF is much more stable under extreme temperatures than water itself i.e. doesn’t boil/freeze as easily as water does.

There are two main ways in which water flows through a solar geyser system, a passive flow or active flow.

  • Passive Flow: These are the most basic systems that rely on the difference in heat (caused by the sun) to drive a movement. Ever heard the term “hot air rises”, that’s actually a process called convection. When touching particles have a temperature difference it creates natural movement. In the case of air, once the hot air rises it “pulls” in cooler air to replace it. This is essentially how wind and currents occur naturally around our planet.
  • Active Flow: This is where water is actively “pumped” using a pump system. Pumps can be electric or gas driven. It creates a lot more control over the water flow. This system usually combines safety controls and flow meters.

How effective are Solar Geysers?

The most important part of a solar geyser system is heat containment efficiency. Once the water is heated (by the sun) it begins to lose the heat through convection and radiation, in an attempt to get back to an equilibrium state.

In order to combat the heat loss, insulation is used to contain and get the most out of the heating process. While many tanks can be stainless steel on the outside, they are often a mixture of components to trap heat through layering.

Can they burst?

Both solar and electric water heaters are required by law to have a fail-safe mechanism (temperature/pressure release values). This means that they cannot overheat/explode if they are purchased and installed legally. Purchase from a certified dealer and install using a certified contractor.

Types of Solar Panels Used

The two main types of solar “panels” used in a solar geyser system are:

Flat Plates

  • Tubes (Excavated Tube Collectors or ETC)

There are pros and cons to both systems and both will be better suited for different locations and weather types.

These are the “typical” looking flat solar rectangles with a tempered glass cover. Water or the HTC is typically pumped through small pipes inside the solar plates to heat the liquid.

Flat Plate collectors are generally better for areas of high/constant sunlight

Excavated Tube Collectors

Glass tubes can be used as a replacement for the plate. The tubes are generally better at reducing heat loss. While they are less efficient at collecting heat per square area, they are generally better at storing the heat that does get collected.

Tubes are generally better for areas with inconstant sun/ more cloud cover

Do Solar Geysers save electricity?

The short answer is yes. Solar power is essentially free (once the system is installed). That means that the electricity you would have used to heat a typical water heater system (using electric heating elements) is not required.

Do Solar Geysers work at night?

On a sunny day, water will be heated and stored in your solar geyser system. Depending on the holding capacity of your system, and the quality of insulation, you may be able to retain more than enough hot water to use during the night.

For example, a “typical” shower uses approx. 1 liter (2 gallons) per minute. If a family of four each have an 8-minute hot shower that’s 32l or 64 gallons of hot water used. Therefore, as long as you have enough water left in your storage tank at night, you can all have a hot shower.

Most modern solar systems have a backup

Without sunlight, the solar heater will not heat the water. However, many modern systems have a “backup”. This is where they are also connected to an electric or gas heating system which can be turned on in the case the solar-heated water runs out.

Is it economical to have a backup?

According to Florida Solar Energy Center, a family of 4 using a solar water heater with a backup element could save $200-$300 a year in lower water heating costs.

Can Solar Geysers work during the Winter?

Yes, they can. However, they may not be quite as efficient due to:

  • Reduced sunlight

In order to compensate for this antifreeze and good insulation can be used. Though, if there is not enough sunlight the water simply won’t heat up. In this case, it is best to have a backup system in place.

Solar geysers should be considered electric/gas offset heating. This means that not ALL of your hot water would be expected to come from the solar itself.

Depending on the weather and conditions you could expect up to 80% or more during summer months with as little as 10% of your hot water coming from solar doing harsh winter months.

What size Solar Geyser do I need?

It will depend on your expected outcome and how much water you plan to use on a daily basis. For a typical house, a 200 liter (400 gallons) collection system is usually enough.

In order to heat up this sized tank, you would need a solar panel on your roof approximately two square meters.

How much does a Solar Geyser cost?

Solar Geyser prices can vary significantly depending on what country you are in. Things to consider include:

  • Cost of the solar geyser unit itself
  • Installation costs
  • Government rebate or subsidy (as an incentive to switch to solar)

Some examples of prices include (for system setup of a typical house):

  • South Africa (14,500 ZAR)
  • Australia (5,000 AUD)
  • UK (5,000 GBP)
  • USA (5,000 USD)

However, prices can vary significantly within countries, and even companies deepening on what kind of setup you choose. In South Africa, you can pay as little as R3,323 for a 100L Low-pressure up to R19,441 for a top of the range 200L High-pressure Solar Geyser.

How to choose the right solar geyser?

Here are the main elements that you should look for when choosing your solar geyser. Make sure to read the specifications for each unit. These are the key ones to lookout for.

Tank Size (l or gallons)

This is usually the first thing to look for. The bigger the tank, the more hot water you will get.

  • In contrast, the bigger the tank the more energy you need to heat it up
  • Typical solar geyser tanks come in 100, 200, and 300 liter sizes.
  • Based on “typical” daily water use per person of 50litres

Therefore the size you would be looking at for number of people would be:

  • 1 to 2 people = 100L
  • 2 to 4 people = 200L
  • up to 6 people = 300L

Pressure ( kPa )

There are two types of pressure rating

Low pressure system

High pressure system.

This is where the water tank sits up on the roof and water is gravity fed into the house.

  • The benefit of this is lower cost and simplicity
  • It can be used without electricity (for off grid setups)
  • Whole system will not work if one heating element breaks
  • Doesn’t connect into modern plumbing systems well (with high pressure). New direct line needed to be installed.

This uses a pump to push water through the system.

  • Higher water pressure
  • The water collection tank can be located next to or under the house
  • More expensive that low pressure
  • Reliant on electricity for pump

Element Rating ( kW)

The efficiency rating is important for your level of heating. The more powerful, the more the water can be heated (to higher temperatures).

If you like your shower steaming hot, you will want a greater kW rating. However, the higher the rating, the higher the cost.

As a general rule: 4 kWh can heat up a 200l by approx. 17 degrees in temperate weather.

Collection Type

Choosing the solar collection panel type is based mostly on your locality.

  • Pick the flat panel type : if you live somewhere that gets a lot of sunlight and is relatively low lying (not mountain)
  • Pick the tube style : if you live somewhere with more cloud cover or higher altitude as these are generally better at insulating the heat

How to install and connect a solar geyser?

It depends greatly on the pressure type.

Low pressure systems

If you are already pretty handy, setting up a low pressure system can be pretty straight forward (if you are running a line direct from the unit into the house or cabin).

Connecting it to the house mains will be a different story due to the significant difference in overall water pressures (normally a much higher pressure that comes from the main lines). In this instance it would be better to get a professional.

High pressure systems

In just about all cases (unless you have the specific experience) it will be better to have a professional install a high pressure system.

This will be beneficial for home insurance purposes also (to make the system low/no risk).

Is it worth it?

Switching to solar geysers can be big energy and cost-saving in the long run. It’s not really a question of is it worth it, it is more when will it pay itself off?

  • USA (12 years)

This will vary greatly depending on where in the country you live (warm/sunny places will pay off much quicker than cold cloudy places).

The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure is to invest R116.6 million in the Provincial Energy Resilience Programme and Solar Geyser Initiative.

The Department announced recently that the 2024/25 fiscal year will see its contribution “make significant advances in helping the Western Cape become less reliant on Eskom, and the first province to end loadshedding .”

In March, the Provincial Minister of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, announced that from its annual budget, the department has set aside R116.6m for the energy programme’s projects scheduled to launch or continue in the 2024/5 fiscal year.

Five projects identified as part of the department’s programme for this financial year

The feasibility phase of the Explore Options for Gas to Power project has recently been completed. 

This is a current topic with the ongoing national Gas Independent Power Producer Procurement programme which seeks 3GW of energy generation from gas, and the expected publication of the national Gas Master Plan. 

The Department said the second of these projects, the Stellenbosch Municipal Independent Power Producer Procurement (MIPPP) Transaction Advisor and Project Manager project , is well on track. 

The second phase which includes the feasibility study is due for completion in the first quarter of 2024/25. 

“The Stellenbosch Municipality will, thereafter, be equipped with the results of a detailed, multi-faceted and multi-disciplinary investigation into the viability of a 50MWp solar PV facility, including Battery Energy Storage,” the Department said.

The Project Preparation Facility will build on learnings from the Stellenbosch MIPPP project and has been established to bring transaction advisory and related services to other municipalities across the province. 

“The range of services is wide and designed to match the anticipated needs of the municipalities to bring projects to bankability and to ensure compliant procurement of low-carbon and renewable energy to support the municipalities’ residents, businesses, and consumer bases.

“Currently, the projects are being developed in response to the applications received from several municipalities.” 

In the Grid Infrastructure project , the department completed a detailed assessment of the grid infrastructure in the Western Cape at the end of March 2024.

The Department said it will continue to build on this with the assistance of engineers contracted via the Capacity to Implement project. 

The Solar Geyser Panel Installation programme for indigent households will continue this year with the programme being implemented at seven housing developments across the province.

Expanding rollout of Western Cape solar geyser programme

Simmers launched the solar geyser project in the last financial year through the department’s own funding. The department aims to install 1,557 solar geyser panels by the end of current financial year 2024/5.

“Our commitment to advancing energy resilience in the Western Cape is evident through the allocation of R116.6 million towards critical projects aimed at reducing reliance on Eskom and enhancing sustainability. 

“The extension of our solar geyser panel installation programme for indigent households further underscores our dedication to providing clean and affordable energy solutions for our communities,” said Simmers.

Washington – Today, April 22, as the Biden-Harris Administration celebrates Earth Day, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced 60 selectees that will receive $7 billion in grant awards through the Solar for All grant competition to deliver residential solar projects to over 900,000 households nationwide. The grant competition is funded by President Biden’s Investing in America agenda through the Inflation Reduction Act, which created EPA’s $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. The 60 selections under the $7 billion Solar for All program will provide funds to states, territories, Tribal governments, municipalities, and nonprofits across the country to develop long-lasting solar programs that enable low-income and disadvantaged communities to deploy and benefit from distributed residential solar, lowering energy costs for families, creating good-quality jobs in communities that have been left behind, advancing environmental justice and tackling climate change.

“Today we’re delivering on President Biden’s promise that no community is left behind by investing $7 billion in solar energy projects for over 900,000 households in low-income and disadvantaged communities,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “The selectees will advance solar energy initiatives across the country, creating hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs, saving $8 billion in energy costs for families, delivering cleaner air, and combating climate change.” 

“Solar is the cheapest form of electricity—and one of the best ways to lower energy costs for American families,” said John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate Policy. “Today’s announcement of EPA’s Solar for All awards will mean that low-income communities, and not just well-off communities, will feel the cost-saving benefits of solar thanks to this investment.”

“Residential solar electricity leads to reduced monthly utility bills, reduced levels of air pollution in neighborhoods, and ultimately healthier communities, but too often low-income and disadvantaged communities have been left out. Today’s announcement will invest billions to ensure that affordable housing across the U.S. can access solar and increase energy efficiency and climate resilience,” said U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman. “HUD is honored to have played a key role in today’s monumental announcement, which will provide meaningful household savings to households in low-income and disadvantaged communities, reduce both greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs, and deliver electricity during grid outages for low-income households.”

“Sunlight is powering millions of homes across the nation, and we're working hard to ensure Americans everywhere can benefit from this affordable clean energy resource,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “DOE is proud to work alongside our partners at EPA and across the Federal government to help communities access the limitless energy of the sun to light their homes and power their businesses.”

“The United States can and must lead the world in transforming our energy systems away from fossil fuels,” said U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (VT). “The Solar for All program – legislation that I successfully introduced – will not only combat the existential threat of climate change by making solar energy available to working class families, it will also substantially lower the electric bills of Americans and create thousands of good-paying jobs. This is a win for the environment, a win for consumers, and a win for the economy.”

EPA estimates that the 60 Solar for All recipients will enable over 900,000 households in low-income and disadvantaged communities to deploy and benefit from distributed solar energy. This $7 billion investment will generate over $350 million in annual savings on electric bills for overburdened households. The program will reduce 30 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions cumulatively, from over four gigawatts of solar energy capacity unlocked for low-income communities over five years. Solar and distributed energy resources help improve electric grid reliability and climate resilience, which is especially important in disadvantaged communities that have long been underserved.

Solar for All will deliver on the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to creating high-quality jobs with the free and fair choice to join a union for workers across the United States. This $7 billion investment in clean energy will generate an estimated 200,000 jobs across the country. All selected applicants intend to invest in local, clean energy workforce development programs to expand equitable pathways into family-sustaining jobs for the communities they are designed to serve. At least 35% of selected applicants have already engaged local or national unions, demonstrating how these programs will contribute to the foundation of a clean energy economy built on strong labor standards and inclusive economic opportunity for all American communities.

The Solar for All program also advances President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative , which set the goal that 40% of the overall benefits of certain federal climate, clean energy, affordable and sustainable housing, and other investments flow to disadvantaged communities that are marginalized by underinvestment and overburdened by pollution. All of the funds awarded through the Solar for All program will be invested in low-income and disadvantaged communities. The program will also help meet the President’s goal of achieving a carbon pollution-free power sector by 2035 and net-zero emissions economy by no later than 2050.

Solar for All will expand existing low-income solar programs and launch new ones. The 60 selected applicants will serve households in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and territories, as well as increase access to solar for Tribes. EPA has selected 49 state-level awards totaling approximately $5.5 billion, six awards to serve Tribes totaling over $500 million, and five multistate awards totaling approximately $1 billion. Solar for All will deploy residential solar for households nationwide by not only providing grants and low-cost financing to overcome financial barriers to deployment but also by providing services to communities to overcome other barriers such as siting, permitting, and interconnection. The 60 selected applicants have committed to delivering on the three objectives of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund: reducing climate and air pollution; delivering benefits to low-income and disadvantaged communities; and mobilizing financing to spur additional deployment of affordable solar energy. Solar for All selected applicants are expanding existing low-income solar programs and launching new programs. In at least 25 states and territories nationwide, Solar for All is launching new programs where there has never been a substantial low-income solar program before. In these geographies, Solar for All selected applicants will open new markets for distributed solar by funding new programs that provide grants and low-cost financing for low-income, residential solar.

To date, many of the 60 selected Solar for All applicants have supported low-income and underserved communities in installing innovative residential solar projects. With this new funding, selectees can launch thousands more projects like these throughout every state and territory in the nation:

  • The threat of storms is a major reason Athens, Georgia resident Delmira Jennings and her husband John used selected applicant Capital Good Fund's Georgia BRIGHT leasing program to install a 13-kilowatt solar and 10-kilowatt-hour battery system in February. “Last year, we spent two days without power after what seemed like a mini tornado,” Jennings said. After a recent outage, Jennings noted that she didn't even know she lost power. “The batteries kicked in and all the power items we were using were on battery backup.”
  • Last year, the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, whose successful pilot initiative served as the basis for selected applicant Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara (MHA) Nation’s Northern Plains Tribal Solar for All program, took major steps toward a clean energy future with the completion of the first phase of the White River Community Solar project. This project will deploy 15 solar systems at the homes of elders while piloting a groundbreaking approach to solar ownership and management that is intended to set an example for Tribes across the nation.
  • Through its existing Solar on Multifamily Affordable Housing (SOMAH) program — a model for equitably providing solar to low-income renters in disadvantaged communities — selected applicant GRID Alternatives’ team in San Diego installed a solar energy system at Trolley Trestle, home to youth transitioning out of the foster care system. Energy cost savings estimated at over $600k over ten years, will be reinvested to provide additional services to those who call Trolley Trestle home, including more job and life skills training.

Review and Selection Process Information

The 60 applicants selected for funding were chosen through a competition review process. This multi-stage process included review from hundreds of experts in climate, power markets, environmental justice, labor, and consumer protection from EPA, Department of Energy, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Treasury, Department of Agriculture, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Department of Labor, Department of Defense, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the Department of Energy’s National Labs – all screened through ethics and conflict of interest checks and trained on the program requirements and evaluation criteria. Applications were scored and selected through dozens of review panels and an interagency senior review team.

EPA anticipates that awards to the selected applicants will be finalized in the summer of 2024, and selected applicants will begin funding projects through existing programs and begin expansive community outreach programs to launch new programs in the fall and winter of this year. Selections are contingent on the resolution of all administrative disputes related to the competitions.

WASHINGTON — President  Joe Biden  is marking  Earth Day  by announcing $7 billion in federal grants for residential solar projects serving 900,000-plus households in low- and middle-income communities. He also plans to expand his New Deal-style  American Climate Corps green jobs training program .

The grants are being awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency, which unveiled the 60 recipients on Monday. The projects are expected to eventually reduce emissions by the equivalent of 30 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and save households $350 million annually, according to senior administration officials.

Biden’s latest environmental announcements come as he is working to energize young voters for his reelection campaign. Young people were a key part of a broad but potentially fragile coalition that helped him defeat then-President  Donald Trump  in 2020. Some have  joined protests  around the country of the administration’s handling of Israel’s war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Senior administration officials said young Americans are keenly invested in the Biden climate agenda and want to actually help enact it. The Climate Corps initiative is a way for them to do that, the officials said.

Solar  is gaining traction  as a key renewable energy source that could reduce the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels, which emit planet-warming greenhouse gases. Not only is it clean, but solar energy can also boost the reliability of the electric grid.

But solar energy can have high costs for initial installation, making it inaccessible for many Americans — and potentially meaning a mingling of environmental policy with election-year politics.

Forty-nine of the new grants are state-level awards, six serve Native American tribes and five are multi-state awards. They can be used for investments such as rooftop solar and community solar gardens.

Biden is making the announcement at northern Virginia’s Prince William Forest Park, about 30 miles southwest of Washington. It was established in 1936 as a summer camp for underprivileged youth from Washington, part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps to help create jobs during the Great Depression.

Biden used executive action last year to create the American Climate Corps modeled on Roosevelt’s New Deal. He is announcing Monday that nearly 2,000 corps positions are being offered across 36 states, including jobs offered in partnership with the North American Building Trades Unions.

Biden has often used Earth Day as a backdrop to further his administration’s climate initiatives. Last year, he signed an executive order creating the White House Office of Environmental Justice, meant to help ensure that poverty, race and ethnic status do not lead to worse exposure to pollution and environmental harm.

He has tried to draw a contrast with GOP congressional leaders, who have called for less regulation of oil production to lower energy prices. Biden officials counter that GOP policies benefit highly profitable oil companies and could ultimately undermine U.S. efforts to compete with the Chinese in the renewable energy sector.

Biden will use his Virginia visit to discuss how “a climate crisis fully manifest to the American people in communities all across the country, is also an opportunity for us to come together,” said White House National Climate Adviser Ali Zaidi.

He said the programs can “unlock economic opportunity to create pathways to middle-class-supporting careers, to save people money and improve their quality of life.”

The awards came from the  Solar for All program , part of the $27 billion “green bank” created as part of a sweeping  climate law  passed in 2022. The bank is intended to reduce climate and air pollution and send money to neighborhoods most in need, especially disadvantaged and low-income communities disproportionately impacted by climate change.

EPA Deputy Administrator Janet McCabe said she was “looking forward to these funds getting out into the community, giving people skills, putting them to work in their local communities, and allowing people to save on their energy bills so that they can put those dollars to other needs.”

Among those receiving grants are state projects to provide solar-equipped roofs for homes, college residences and residential-serving community solar projects in West Virginia, a non-profit operating Mississippi solar lease program and solar workforce training initiatives in South Carolina.

The  taxpayer-funded green bank has faced Republican opposition  and concerns over accountability for how the money gets used. EPA previously disbursed  the other $20 billion of the bank’s funds  to nonprofits and community development banks for clean energy projects such as residential heat pumps, additional energy-efficient home improvements and larger-scale projects like electric vehicle charging stations and community cooling centers.

RI, Singapore move forward with solar power export plan

resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has announced that the government will move forward with a plan to enable the export of  solar power to Singapore.

Accompanied by their successors for the Leaders’ Retreat at Bogor Palace in West Java on Monday, President Jokowi and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong celebrated their achievements in bilateral ties over the past decade and promised continued cooperation.

“We [the government] will continue to encourage plans to export [solar-powered] electricity to Singapore, including investment for supporting green industries,” President Jokowi said during the meeting on Monday.

Indonesia has sent out mixed signals regarding the export of power from renewable sources. 

In June 2022, the Investment Ministry pushed for a ban on such exports, arguing that the country needed to ensure it had enough green power for its own industries, despite an announcement that the government had begun working on a new regulatory framework to enable the operation just a few months prior.
