K.G.F. Chapter 2 Review: The Legend Of The Gold Mafia

' src=

K.G.F (Kolar Gold Fields): Chapter 2 is the sequel to Prashanth Neel ’s 2018 blockbuster epic period action-drama K.G.F: Chapter 1 . The film stars Sandalwood ’s superstar Naveen Kumar Gowda a.k.a Yash with Sanjay Dutt , Raveena Tandon and Srinidhi Shetty in the supporting roles. K.G.F: Chapter 2 released in theaters all across India on April 14, 2022.

Featuring Sandalwood ’s Superstar Yash as Rocky!

In the blood-soaked Kolar Gold Fields, mafia head Rocky’s name strikes fear in the hearts of his rivals. While his allies look up to him, the Indian government sees him as a threat to law and order. Rocky must battle threats from all sides in order to sustain his reign in the Kolar Gold Fields.

K.G.F — Chapter 2 Official Trailer:

Rocky And Adheera

If you are not aware of who Rocky is, let me tell you that he is no ordinary movie character. He is a brand of the K.G.F franchise. And who better can play Rocky other than Sandalwood’s rocking star Yash ? Yash’s style, charisma, personality, actions and dialogue delivery; all combine to form the perfect action hero in the form of Rocky.

K.G.F: Chapter 2

Naveen Kumar Gowda a.k.a Yash as Rocky in K.G.F: Chapter 2

Standing 6 feet 2 inches tall with a decent muscular physique, this superstar has dwarfed many action heroes of Bollywood and even the South film industry . Sanjay Dutt, the legendary action hero of Bollywood who played the villain Adheera in K.G. F: Chapter 2, was also impressed by Yash’s performance and personality. In a press conference interview when Dutt was asked what best he liked about the movie, he said it’s Yash and his charismatic personality!

K.G.F: Chapter 2

Sanjay Dutt as Adheera in K.G.F. Chapter 2

Sanjay Dutt , now 62, was battling cancer when this movie was being shot and as the lead villain Adheera, he had to give an intensifying performance which involved several fight scenes with Yash. He was also required to wear a 25 kg heavy leather suit with armors in the role of Adheera. It was none other than Yash who supported him throughout the film and made sure that he was comfortable wearing such a heavy costume while doing intense action scenes throughout the film’s making. Yash was highly concerned about Dutt’s deteriorating health. He even requested Dutt to shoot his scenes in green room sets, so that later on the filmmakers will be able to set the background visuals for his scenes and make them look real. However, Dutt refused Yash and told him that he had seen K.G.F: Chapter 1 and he just cannot disappoint him and the rest of the crew members as his performance in green room sets may spoil the essence of the sequel of a blockbuster movie. He was ready to shoot the intensifying action and fight scenes in the harsh firey rocky desert and burning gold mine sets along with Yash. Dutt did this to match up K.G.F: Chapter 2 at par with K.G.F: Chapter 1 which was a blockbuster. With the efforts of all the crew members especially Yash and Sanjay Dutt , K.G.F: Chapter 2 became a blockbuster as well.

Rocky’s action scene in K.G.F: Chapter 2

Raveena Tandon , who is the lead female cast in K.G.F: Chapter 2 is a veteran Bollywood actress. I have been seeing her movies since high school. She used to be the star of the 1990s Bollywood cinema and the heartthrob of every young man during that time. Her performance needs no introduction. Srinidhi Shetty as Rocky’s wife Reena gave an intriguing performance. Reena is shown suffering from Stockholm syndrome where she loves Rocky and supports his criminal activities.

Rocky vs. Adheera: The desert shootout scene

Amazing Visuals

I have never ever come across a cinematic masterwork like K.G.F: Chapter 2 . The fascinating visuals, backgrounds and the sets amplified the essence of this epic period action-drama. The cinematography by Bhuvan Gowda had a retro touch to match the late 1970s urban and rural landscapes of India. The film was extensively shot in cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore and Mangalore and the landscapes of these cities are beautiful. The shoot also commenced at the Cyanaide Hills of the real Kolar Gold Fields .

K.G.F: Chapter 2

Raveena Tandon as Indian Prime Minister Ramika Sen in K.G.F: Chapter 2

K.G.F: Chapter 2 has been shot with utmost precision with the camera capturing even the minutest details like a bullet hitting its target in slow motion. It also involved some brilliant drone camerawork. One amazing visual from the movie is when Rocky’s machine gun-loaded trucks were travelling in a snake like pattern through the mountains before being stranded by Adheera’s gang.

An Explosive Screenplay

The screenplay of K.G.F: Chapter 2 was even more explosive than the first chapter. Heavy firings, ear-splitting explosions, intense gang wars and hand-to-hand combats; Chapter 2 has it all! Rocky’s epic dialogue in one of the scenes goes, “Violence…Violence…Violence! I don’t like it. But Violence likes me!” This movie is for sure, all about violence! Also, the screenplay involves some awesome dialogues from Rocky. Ones such dialogue in Hindi is “Meri Dosti Layak Koi Yaar Nahi, Mera Dushmani Jhel Sake Aisi Talwaar Nahi!”; which means “There is no man who can stand my friendship; also there is no sword which can withstand my enmity!”

kgf 2 movie review behindwoods

Even if the movie ran through a huge duration of 2 hours and 50 minutes, the editing done by Ujwal Kulkarni is praiseworthy. This epic period action-drama will instill thrill with each and every passing moment as tensions erupt into immense gang wars and one-on-one fights! The sequences were edited so as to match the flow of the film which in turn kept the thrill intact throughout its entire runtime. You will be amazed to learn about the editing potential of Kulkarni who happens to be only 19 years old and has created history with his film editing skills at such a young age!

kgf 2 movie review behindwoods

You may have watched many action screenplays till date, but I am sure none of them would compare to this one! A scene goes where Rocky’s trucks were stranded by Adheera and his gang. The trucks were all lined up above the mountain. Adheera and his gang were preparing to fire at the trucks from below the mountain. Rocky stood facing them with his hands pretending to hold a machine gun. He signaled his own gang members who were inside the trucks by pretending to fire at Adheera’s gang. It was then a hell lot of men emerged out the trucks and intensely fired their machine guns at Adheera and his gang. This is an epic scene from the movie which you probably wouldn’t want to miss out!

Mind-Blowing Music

Though the original tracks of K.G.F: Chapter 2 were sung in Kannada, the Hindi versions of all the tracks have been re-composed by Ravi Basrur and Kinnal Raj. Just listen to the rocking tracks like “Toofan” and “Sulthan” in Hindi as they will surely make you feel the power of the rockstar Rocky!

K.G.F: Chapter 2

Portrays The Reality Of Indian Sons

K.G.F: Chapter 2 is no exaggeration. It portrays the real-life dedication that we Indian sons have for our mothers. Rocky lived to fulfill the promise he had made to his mother. As he was born in poverty, he promised his mother that he would die as the richest man in this world. At present, Jeff Bezos is the richest man in this world. However, as per this fictional story, during the late 1970s it was Rocky who was the richest man! After all, he owned an entire gold mine and his mafia empire spread all across India after he defeated his rivals. He was probably even richer than the Arabs.

kgf 2 movie review behindwoods

Achyuth Kumar as Guru Pandian in K.G.F: Chapter 2

The dedication of Rocky towards his mother can be seen from the movie where he decided to shift his mother’s grave to some safe location where she could rest in peace and Adheera’s sudden attacks won’t disturb her peaceful rest. He even punished his drunkard father who had wronged his mother and had abandoned her.

Rocky’s promise to his mother reminds me of my own promise that I made to my mother during childhood, where I promised never to drink or smoke when I grow up. Till date, I haven’t touched a cigarette or a beer or a wine bottle. I have never been to bars or pubs. People find it hard to imagine a man above 40 who has never consumed alcohol or smoked in his entire life. We Indian sons are for sure highly dedicated to the promises we make to our parents, especially our mothers, and K.G.F: Chapter 2 does portray this reality!

Signifies The Power Of Goddess Kaali

“Maa Kaali” or Goddess Kaali symbolizes power in Hinduism. Being a Bengali Hindu, I worship goddesses like Durga and Kaali. Goddess Kaali indicates the impermanence of all things, which is why she wears a garland of skulls. Yet she is also the ultimate transforming power, which can take us from death to immortality.

kgf 2 movie review behindwoods

Rocky sets on his pursuit for power to become a living legend with the blessings of Goddess Kaali. He even beheaded Garuda in Chapter 1 in front of the goddess. Goddess Kaali and scenes of her dedicated worship in the movie not only portrays Hinduism but also the power of Hinduism.

If you are wondering, how can a person by the name “Rocky” be a Hindu? Then I would like to tell you that his real name in the movie was Raja Krishnappa Bairya. Rocky was just his pet name.

K.G.F: Chapter 2

Srinidhi Shetty and Yash in K.G.F: Chapter 2

K.G.F: Chapter 2 is probably the first and will be the only movie in my review history which has nothing “bad” associated with it. It is a complete masterpiece! Just watch it and you will get to know why. If you are an action or thriller lover, this is just the movie you may crave for!

You might think that I am exaggerating things because I am an Indian and this is an Indian movie. But no! I am from North India and this is a South Indian movie. We are poles apart! K.G.F: Chapter 2 does deserve to be on top of the hit list of all movies owing to its amazing storyline and the classy direction of Prashanth Neel .

The Verdict:

kgf 2 movie review behindwoods

Rocky escapes into the stormy sea

Prashanth Neel ’s filmmaking style has been praised by all including Yash himself. In an interview he revealed Neel’s technicality and dedication to his work which sets him apart from all his competitor directors. Yash further said that Neel, as a director, has the ability to be at par with Hollywood directors as his movies have an essence of Hollywood movies in them. The sets, locations and backgrounds of K.G.F: Chapter 2 were magical and formulating such complicated gold field sets with thousands of workers required huge investments from the producers. No doubt, the movie’s gross budget sums up to INR 100 crores!

kgf 2 movie review behindwoods

Indian Air Force planes bombard Rocky’s ship

If you think that Rocky in the K.G.F franchise was a criminal, then you are right because he surely was! But he was also the “Robin Hood” for the workers and residents at the Kolar Gold Fields. He was their savior as well as protector. He saved them from the dreadful mafia leader Garuda and protected them from Adheera’s wrath. He supported them at the time of distress financially as well as emotionally. He was the “hero” that every poor Indian citizen would deserve.

With this, I can conclude that the downfall of Bollywood has begun. You read that right! The cosmic emergence of the South Indian film industry with heavy-hitting blockbuster movies like RRR and K.G.F has impacted the TRP of Bollywood movies to a great extent. K.G.F: Chapter 2 has not just won the hearts of the Indian audience but the global audience as well across North America and Australia. Bollywood needs to change its filmmaking style so that it can match up to some extent with the masterpieces created by the South film industry . If it doesn’t do so soon enough, then the day won’t be far when Indian movies will comprise South Indian movies only. Bollywood will then be a thing of the past.

K.G.F: Chapter 2

I hope after reading my long review, you wouldn’t want me to remind you to watch K.G.F: Chapter 2 . Rather I would say, don’t miss this movie because if you do, you would probably be missing out the biggest blockbuster in the history of Indian cinema!

'KGF: Chapter 2' Review: A terrific Yash powers an explosive sequel

A still from KGF. (File Photo)

Four years ago, the makers of KGF: Chapter 1 made a promise. A promise of making the biggest Kannada film that will reach new avenues and newer audiences. And today, they are back with KGF: Chapter 2, and if the responses are anything to go by, the promise has been kept. Written and directed by Prashanth Neel, who is a superstar in his own right, the KGF films have grasped the entire nation’s consciousness and reinvented the time-tested story of an underdog coming on top surmounting all odds. But then, when the underdog in question is the seemingly invincible Rocky Bhai (Yash), every element of the masala template is dialled up to astronomical levels.

The second part continues right from where the first part ends. We now see the “pillars” of Narachi being forced to accept Rocky as their new boss. Of course, this leads to resentment across the board, and it is clear that betrayals will be hitting Rocky left, right, and centre. But we don’t watch KGF for the ingenuity of the plot, but for inventiveness in the making. Whenever we think a high point of a particular conflict is reached, it is almost like Prashanth is giving a lopsided smile hinting as if it was just the tip of an iceberg. This is something that happens on more than one occasion and is a testament to the impact of the writing. For instance, in other films, the meeting of Adheera and Rocky might have been the ideal climactic showdown.

kgf 2 movie review behindwoods

However, here we have three brilliant sequences featuring them where there is an oscillation of power, and each of these scenes delivers the grandeur and intensity that KGF will forever be known for. Another facet of KGF that will be always associated with the franchise is hyper-stylised violence. While there is a lot to discuss where the film falls on the moral spectrum, the arresting visual style of the film masks such thought processes during its runtime.

A lot of such questions do arise while watching KGF 2, the primary of which is the terribly underwritten female lead. With Srinidhi Shetty’s Reena suffering from a severe case of Stockholm Syndrome, one can’t help but feel bad about her character sketch. It is troubling because even smaller roles like the one played by Easwari Rao get a neatly rounded arc. Surely Reena and Srinidhi deserved better.

The film also almost runs the risk of feeling bloated, especially in the pre-interval portions, because there are a lot of layers being packed in too quick a time. There are one too many villains, and one too many crisscrossing storylines. Even the final few minutes of the film left a vacuous feeling because I wasn’t sure if it did justice to the events that transpired across two films and eight years.

However, the towering performance of Yash ensures these are just fleeting thoughts and we don’t really dwell on them because the actor, in supreme form, keeps us hooked on his brand of nonchalance acting. More than his playful turns, it is the emotional beats that are most effective, and the rage-filled eyes of Yash say more than what he does in his trademark broken English. And these dialogues not just add to the constant undercurrent of humour, but also has noteworthy lines that can go right on motivational posters. Sample this, “Greed is good… Greed is progress…” Yes, it is, Rocky Bhai. Another writing highlight of KGF: Chapter 2 is how a buildup song in this edition also acts as a quick narration of the first part. It checks both the ingenious and inventive boxes. Of course, there is no point discussing the logic, or the lack of it, of this film, which always stays true to the world created by Prashanth Neel.

The brilliant technical team conjures mesmerising visuals to keep us invested in the world of KGF. Keeping the colour palette to a minimum, cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda gives us some stunning visuals that capture the grandeur of the project without really showboating. No aspect of this opulence feels wasted or overboard. Be it the vast expanses of the mines or the never-ending shots of an array of vehicles including cars, planes, ships, bikes, helicopters etc… every visual element of KGF stands tall. If there is showboating of any sort, it is in the editing by Ujwal Kulkarni. And even here, the work might seem excessive, but in an over-the-top world of KGF, it fits in perfectly.

Three other technicians who truly elevate KGF: Chapter 2 are composer Ravi Basrur (the chest-thumping background score), art director Shivakumar (the tasteful coronation stairs, the greyness of the mines, and more), and stunt choreographers Anbariv (every scene involving Yash brandishing weapons, the car sequences, and more). Àlmost every high moment of KGF: Chapter 2 is the collaborative work of each department, and it is wonderful to see how each of them worked like clockwork to deliver this grand spectacle.

The concept of pan-Indian movies might have now been reduced to a gimmick in most cases, but the KGF franchise is a true-blue example of this developing trend. The success of the first part pushed the makers to dream bigger, and they managed to rope in names like Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Rao Ramesh, and Prakash Raj to lend necessary gravitas to roles that were already hyped up. Sanjay Dutt is menacing as Adheera, the primary antagonist, and writer-director Prashanth treats him with the right amount of respect. Adheera has moments that place him ahead of Rocky Bhai, and the same holds good for Raveena’s Ramika Sen. Both actors ace the roles that don’t just exist to do lip service to the larger-than-life lead character.

Replacing Anant Nag was never going to be an easy task, but points to the writing that seamlessly introduces Prakash Raj into the mix. There is a fascinating mix of humility and pride in his baritone as he delivers the narration. Although the film boasts of such big names, KGF: Chapter 2 never loses focus on what it is actually about — Yash and Rocky Bhai — and it is the relentless attempts at elevating the star at the centre of it all that gives us a fantastic film that proves the world will always be accepting of one more “mother sentiment” film.

At an important juncture in KGF: Chapter 2, Rocky asks his detractors to avoid pointless conversations about him keeping to his territory. He announces, “The World is my territory”, and if the response to an early morning show of the Tamil version of the film is anything to go by, we have an outsider breaking down walls to become the most unlikely pan-Indian superstar... or as he’d like it... Pan-India’s ONLY Rocking Star.

KGF – Chapter 2 Review: A Violent Saga That is Thankfully Backed by Thoughtful Writing

kgf 2 movie review behindwoods

Reena ( Srinidhi Shetty , who leaves a mark as the barely-there love interest of a complicated man) is sweating, and she complains that the man who is keeping her hostage in the name of love, should do something about it. “ Maniyammaa, appalam jaakiradhai ,” warns Rocky ( Yash ) after making arrangements accordingly with one of his henchmen. Having seen many films where a brutish man pursues a woman, you understand the task at hand. You wait for an extravagant air-conditioning machine to appear, but Rocky Bhai has something entirely else on his mind. In a nutshell, this is what Prashanth Neel ’s K.G.F: Chapter 2 is all about. Bigger beyond the viewer’s wildest dreams.

Is it always better? Well, definitely better than the first instalment. Characters like Adheera and Ramika Sen, played fabulously by Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon , needed extensive writing. It is not that they aren’t scary enough. They are, but the intimidation comes from the actors, not the script. However, I cannot call this film under-written. If anything, it is the opposite – every scene is densely populated with characters. KGF 2 doesn’t know what a quiet moment is, and it is better for it. Armed with Ravi Basrur’s score, every instant vibrates with chaotic energy. It puts a willing viewer in a trance and keeps them there. For the first time in a long while, I enjoyed the whistles and hoots of the over-enthused. Don’t get me wrong, the film isn’t all about elevations and surpassing expectations. Beyond the chaos, there is order. Beyond the swag, there is substance.

“ Kalaas ” snickers Rocky while examining a Kalashnikov in a tense moment. While the filmmaker manages to distract us with wordplay, the callback that comes later is one of the best-executed pieces of filmmaking and writing in masala cinema. Even the violence, which gets numbingly excessive after a point, is handled with more thought than you expect in big films with big men holding big guns. The filmmaker foresaw the desensitisation, so he transforms the action sequences with thought and technique. While one chase sequence benefits from stylised editing, another mutes the sound and puts us in our shocked hero’s head, oblivious to the bloodshed going around him.

The world-building, in no small part thanks to the art department and Bhuvan Gowda’s camera work, is satisfyingly meticulous. Even the muted grimness is visually pleasing because of the way it is captured and utilised. Yash, too, does a beautiful job bringing this world alive. He is captivating as this pragmatic man whose well of affection for his mother is bottomless. The most vital thing an action superstar has to possess is conviction. To believe that he is the king of the world. To imbibe that belief with confidence enough to let him unironically walk into a room oozing swag. Yash seems to have it and then some.

I have my problems with the narrator. There are inconsistencies, and Prakash Raj , playing the son of Anand Ingalagi, is a smart choice – his voice adds heft, but his issue with his father lacks relevance and resolution. But, I have to admit, the peon that religiously listens to the story is an excellent proxy for the viewer. His enthusiasm is infectious, and the actor who plays him makes for a great hype-man. Even Eswari Rao ’s mourning mother is an update on the trope. She is never begging but bargaining; give her closure and get her blessings.

Small touches like this don’t do much for the proceedings but affect your viewing experience immensely. Choosing to introduce Rao Ramesh ’s character by having him address someone named Ramesh. A Kattappa-esque Vaanaram (a perfectly-controlled Ayyappa Sharma) whose loyalty lies with the place and not its people. “We had enough wars,” says Ramika Sen, the PM, before revising her plans for peace. “I don’t like violence,” says the hero who knows nothing else, thus establishing the idea that power begets violence and destruction. Again, it’s nothing and everything.

A saying goes, “Powerful people come from powerful places.” The narrator disagrees and says, “History was wrong. Powerful people make places powerful.” Good thing that Rocky Bhai doesn’t believe in history. But I can’t entirely agree with the narrator. Rocky does come from a powerful place – his mother. A woman in her early 20s dreams big dreams for her son. She never thinks to question them, and neither does her son. He is never taught to question his ability or its limits, which is both a gift and a curse. This is how K.G.F: Chapter 2 wins and wins big. Instead of trying to find resonance with some myth or the other, it uses a bond as elementary as the one shared by a mother and her child and weaves a legend of its own.

KGF: Chapter 2 is a sequel on steroids – everything is bigger, grander, louder. Director and writer Prashanth Neel has little use for silence, stillness or subtlety. He delivers a film that seduces you with its terrific claptraps but also pummels you into submission with its frenzied editing, thunderous background music and its hypermasculine hero. Everything in this movie is dialled up to 11. For Prashanth, more is more.

This includes the size of the guns, which include Kalashnikovs and one that is so big that it needs its own tripod, the geography – the Kolar Gold Fields are even more sprawling – and the number of bad guys. Supreme among them is Adheera, played by Sanjay Dutt , who we are told has imbibed the Viking way of life, which I think is a way to explain his facial tattoos, braided hair and unflinching brutality. The mother angle, which provides the emotional fulcrum of the story, is more pronounced. The film's narrator says that one way to look at this saga is 'maa ki zidd.' Basically, the subtext of the KGF series is: Mere Paas Maa Hai.

The hardware is also more impressive. Apart from the guns, there are dozens of helicopters – in one scene, a helicopter is summoned not because someone needs to be flown somewhere but because Reena, Rocky's grand romantic obsession, is feeling hot. And Rocky himself is more badass in every way possible. His suits are more stylish. His attitude is more lethal and he is now saviour and king of the world. In one scene, he makes an offer to the prime minister to pay off the national debt. That's how much gold he has.

In Rocky, Prashanth and actor Yash offer us the utopian ideal of old-school machismo. The character has echoes of Amitabh Bachchan 's Vijay in Deewaar or Vijay in Agneepath and Kamal Haasan 's Velu in Nayakan – like them, Rocky has been brutalised by a traumatic childhood. Rocky's actions are driven by rage and a promise made to his beleaguered mother who raised him alone. In part one, we see her instructing him when he is still in her womb – she says: Mujh jaise besahara logon ka masiha banna hoga. This is a task that Rocky takes very seriously. But he is a masiha with swagger, a superb stylist and the irreverent humour of a Chulbul Pandey. Early in the film, when he takes over the gold fields, the son of an adversary vents his displeasure. Rocky replies with a hilariously mocking comment about nepotism. He's a killing machine with wit.

It helps that actor Yash has the charisma and physicality to pull off these fantastical scenarios. He is required to extensively smoke, remove and wear sunglasses, stride into life-threatening situations and butcher countless men but also to have a moral centre. This is a character about whom it is proclaimed in part one: Gang leke aane wale hote hain gangster. Woh akela aata tha, monster. Yash is a good monster. His flamboyant performance anchors the film.

kgf 2 movie review behindwoods

Prashanth and his superb technical crew – DOP Bhuvan Gowda, composer Ravi Basrur, editor Ujwal Kulkarni and art director Shivakumar J – are pros at world building. Narachi, where much of the story is set, is a dusty, dark space even after Rocky has taken over and become a benevolent dictator. Prashanth's favourite tools are aerial shots, exposition, slow-motion and cross-cutting. In the midst of bloody action, he inserts childhood scenes or flits between two parallel scenarios, which raise the stakes higher. With this film, he also defies writing rules – the all-is-lost moment when you think the hero is vanquished takes place pre-interval here. In fact, the interval functions like a climax.

Also read: K.G.F: Chapter 2 Movie Review: A Rockily Stacked Series Of Set-ups And Punch Lines

The trouble is there is still much more to go – more plot twists and more enemies. Post-interval, KGF: Chapter 2 meanders from one set piece to another without the advantage of solid connective tissue. The energy falters and an exhaustion starts to set in. There is also the laughably bad romantic track. The film is set between the 1950s and the 1980s but the gender politics seem to be from an even earlier era. Neanderthal perhaps. Rocky simply forces Reena, played by a vapid Srinidhi Shetty , to live with him in his palatial home because he says he needs entertainment. But of course they don't have sex because that would somehow be against his moral code. What's even more perplexing is that eventually she decides that this arrangement is just dandy and declares her love for him. I saw the film in a theatre packed with young men who were hooting and whistling and I wondered what they would take home from this relationship.

Sanjay Dutt doesn't get the opportunity to match his memorable turn as Kancha Cheena in Agneepath but he is solid – literally – as the unhinged Adheera. And Raveena Tandon 's performance matches the heightened notes of the film – she's fire and brimstone.

KGF: Chapter 2 is a film that requires commitment. It is, as Prashanth put it, anti-gravity cinema. Rules of physics or logic don't apply. In the climax, Adheera is fighting a ferocious battle wearing a fur cape and dark glasses and you cannot ask why. But if you commit, there is fun to be had. Not consistently but enough to make the popcorn taste better.

KGF Chapter 2 Review: Yash Struts Through Battering Ram Of A Movie With Undisguised Glee

A still from KGF: Chapter 2

Cast: Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Srinidhi Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj, Anant Nag

Director: Prashanth Neel

Ratings: 2 Stars (Out of 5)

About the only good thing about K.G.F. Chapter 2 is that you know what you are buying into. Chapter 1 had driven home the point that Raja Krishnappa Beria, better known as Rocky, isn't an ordinary gangster. He does not have a gang with him. He is a lone wolf with the appetite of one. He is just the sort of protagonist you would expect in a film such as this. Everything that it conceives is rendered in gigantic, sweeping doses.

Lead actor revelled Yash in playing a hero with the power of a battalion - an act that catapulted him and the movie into the national consciousness. In the second instalment of the story, having established his individual suzerainty over the Kolar Gold Fields, the protagonist continues to hurtle down the same path, sweeping aside everyone and anyone who stands in his way. He tightens his stranglehold on El Dorado. The film gasps for breath.

K.G.F. Chapter 1 was a humongous hit all right, but cinematically it was a terribly pedestrian affair - loud, verbose, manic and monotonous. K.G.F. Chapter 2 , written and directed by Prashanth Neel and produced by Hombale Films' Vijay Kiragandur, exudes confidence that it has nothing to lose. It doesn't lower either its volume or its volubility one bit.

The film is the handiwork of people who do not seem to have the foggiest sense of modulation, or of moderation, in the matter of pitching and sound design. Relentless action, an unstoppable torrent of words, a splotchy and grainy colour palette and dizzyingly fidgety camerawork get in the way of the story acquiring any degree of tonal variation.

Indeed, K.G.F. Chapter 2 is one uninterrupted, ear-splitting drone that lasts all of three hours. If your brain survives the onslaught, chances of your eardrums remaining unscathed are slim. The film allows itself absolutely no breathing space either in terms of pacing or with regard to what it piles up on the soundtrack.

In this toxically macho world, women are the worst sufferers. They, like the heroine Reena Desai (Srinidhi Shetty), either stand by and do the bidding of the men - Rocky announces right at the outset to the girl's face that "you are my entertainment" and that is meant to sound cool - or haplessly wail and rant in hope of being rescued from their plight.

By way of facile tokenism, there is much ado about a girl child in Narachi who hasn't been killed at birth. The older women in the goldmine region once lorded over by ruthless tyrants and now in the control of the benign hero - a marginally better version of the guys he has snatched power from - perpetually have their backs to the wall.

K.G.F. Chapter 2 opens with the death of veteran journalist and writer Anand Ingalagi (so, Anant Nag has no role here). His narration about the rise and rise of Rocky, an orphan boy who cut his death in the merciless underworld of Bombay, is left incomplete. Deepa Hegde (Malavika Avinash), the TV station boss, wonders who will take the story to its (il)logical end.

Anand Ingalagi's estranged son Vijayendra (Prakash Raj), who has no reason to mourn the passing of his dad but cannot resist the urge to continue what the deceased raconteur, the author of a banned book on the Kolar Gold Fields and Rocky's role in its history, started.

The device of an all-knowing sutradhar leads to the film's rare pauses (not silence, mind you), thanks to Prakash Raj's ability to modulate his dialogue delivery and lend a certain gravitas to meaningless lines like "history says that powerful people come from powerful places".

Everyone else in K.G.F. Chapter yelps and shrieks. One of them contradicts Vijayendra's and asserts that it is powerful people who make places powerful. That is the apogee of the philosophical wisdom that this mass entertainer peddles.

Of course, for good measure, Rocky, sounding like Gordon Gekko, intones that greed is good, greed is progress. The film's idea of plot progression is pitting the hero against a whole lot of people who are ambitious and aggressive as him. So, there is no dearth of conflict in K.G.F Chapter 2.

With the background score intent on squashing any possibility of serenity, the film gallops like a runaway horse with Yash ('Rocking Star' is prefixed to his name in the opening credits) firmly on its back. The men who once swore allegiance to Garuda (Ramachandra Raju), the Narachi Limestone Corporation owner's ambitious son who lost his life at the hands of Rocky in the preceding chapter, are now his rivals.

But Rocky leaves nobody in any doubt at all about his resolve to call the shots in KGF here on. But the evil politician Guru Pandian (Achyuth Kumar), the heroine's father Rajendra Desai (Lakki Lakshman) and Andrews (B.S. Avinash) aren't the only ones Rocky has to reckon with as he transforms himself from a brigand in pursuit of glory to a leader of the downtrodden goldmine workers.

Adheera (Sanjay Dutt, evoking his Agneepath arch-villain vibes and pulling out the stops) returns from the dead, the new Prime Minister Ramika Sen (Raveena Tandon) vows to demolish the KGF empire, and senior CBI officer Kanneganti Raghavan (Rao Ramesh) gathers all the ammunition that he and his outfit need to end the reign of the country's most notorious criminal.

K.G.F. Chapter 2 is relentless is its pursuit of high drama and unbridled action - one scene follows another in a non-stop exhibition of cinematic excess that prevents the niceties of the medium finding their way into the messy, massy mix.

The focus of the film is squarely on Yash. Like he did the first time around, he struts through K.G.F. Chapter 2 with the undisguised glee of a man who knows that he has the measure of his adversaries. Ultimately, the big action sequences, mounted with flair but sans any element of surprise or realism, look and feel mechanical because we know all along no great harm is going to befall the hero.

K.G.F. Chapter 2 is a battering ram of a movie. It is designed to pound the audience to submission. It is only for Yash fans and for those who feel an assault on the senses is a form of cinema. But if you love your eardrums and have had your fill of the super-heroic exploits of an underdog-turned-top dog hero, K.G.F. Chapter is best avoided. It whips up plenty of heat and dust but yields no gold.

Kgf: Chapter 2 (U/A) 14/Apr/2022 Action, Drama 2hrs 48mins

KGF: Chapter 2

Critics Review

Mass overloaded.

Apart from a few lows that exist in the first half, the film is such an entertaining and an emotional roller coaster ride filled with goosebumps. Great vision and conviction by director Prashanth Neel that has made way for a solid theatrical experience. (more)

KGF Chapter 2 is grand in every aspect and will continue to mint the Box Office. Don't miss the Action!

Prashanth Neel and Co have successfully recreated the magic of KGF Chapter 1, rarely losing focus on what they intended to achieve. With all the actors chipping in with useful performances, and Ravi Basrur and Yash carrying the film forward with their respective energies, KGF Chapter 2 ends as a solid commerical flick that has a solid emotional core. A brutal tale of raw machismo and a hint at a third chapter

The film belongs as much to filmmaker Prashanth Neel as it does to Yash. Both of them have managed to deliver a sequel that seems more immersive than the first part. Albeit, Prashanth has always maintained that the second part had the bigger chunk of his original story when they decided to break it into two parts. (more)

Yash and Sanjay Dutt steal the show in this terrific action flick

Prashanth Neel's KGF: Chapter 2 is replete with 'mass' moments not just for Yash but also for Sanjay Dutt. These scenes are aplenty and come at frequent intervals only to get us hyped up for what's about to come. With Sanjay Dutt, Prashanth found a menacing villain, who has an equal weightage as the hero. Yash's 'Rocky' Transitions From 'Bhai' To 'Bhagwan', But The Atheist In Me Is Also A Critic!

All said and done, this jumps from 'larger than life'' to 'larger than god''ko treatment, and gives Yash fans another reason to celebrate his heroism. But beneath all the screams and boisterous BGM, one important thing gets suppressed and rarely gets a chance to flourish intriguing storytelling. (more)

Too much sound, a lot of fury, little impact

The trouble with films busy working on their look is that they forget about plotting. The film swings haphazardly between the past, which shows us Rocky's devotion towards his mother (Archana Jois), and the present, in which he swings between being a saviour and the guy who cracks the whip and roars at the workers to never stop working. Good guy compelled to do bad things by dint of circumstance, or bad guy with a golden heart? Not for us to make too fine a point on that faint distinction because as far as KGF 2 goes, Rocky is no 'gangster', only the 'Master who enters and conquers'. (more)

Chapter Two improves on its predecessor: it is an epic times two.

KGF: Chapter Two, along with the opening and closing imagery. But I didn't mind. The action and the masala flavour and the precision of the cuts are fantastic, and even if the story arc feels familiar, the denseness from the screenplay/editing makes it all seem new. (more)

KGF CHAPTER 2 is a blockbuster all the way.

The film has already generated a tremendous craze and historic advance sales due to the hype, popularity of the first part, mass element and of course Yashs stylish avatar. At the box office, it is sure to take a historic opening and emerge as one of the biggest blockbusters ever, challenging even the numbers of the pre-pandemic record grossers. Recommended! (more)

Yash's film is an explosive tale of brash, unapologetic and larger-than-life characters

Review: ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ betters its predecessor in every department

Review: 'KGF: Chapter 2' betters its predecessor in every department

  • Release Date: 14/04/2022
  • Cast: Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj, Achyuth Kumar
  • Director: Prashanth Neel

KGF: Chapter 2  begins exactly where  Chapter 1  had left off. Rocky (Yash) has killed Garuda and has taken control of the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). The conspirators who had sent him to kill Garuda are taken aback by this sudden change of fate and decide to eliminate Rocky. However, Rocky proves to be equal to the task and easily subdues them with his swag and muscle power. In desperation, the conspirators turn to Adheera (Sanjay Dutt), a vicious and brutal killer who was presumed dead and has a legitimate claim to the throne of KGF. He makes a towering comeback and nearly brings Rocky to his knees. What is left to be seen is how Rocky responds. He has a history of hitting back the hardest when pushed to the wall. Will he do the same again or will Adheera prove to be too strong for him to contend with. To know the answers to those questions, you have to watch the film at a theatre near you.

Elaborate story, engaging screenplay, and effective direction

KGF: Chapter 2  is relentless in its storytelling. For a film that is 168 minutes long, there isn’t a single dull moment. The speed of the narrative remains consistently breakneck but does give the viewers enough time to absorb the content on display. I thought that the pacing might come down a little in the second half as is customary with most films but that never happened. The story is so dense and has so many elements, twists, and underlying emotions and drama that I would not be wrong to say that it has enough material to propel three films.

Prashanth Neel’s direction is masterful. Every sequence feels like a short film in itself as it begins slowly, gathers momentum, and reaches a crescendo by the time it arrives at its culmination and ends with the desired release of the tension and excitement for the audience. This aspect of the film is common for all the sequences be it simple exchanges, dramatic show-offs, or complex action sequences. The sequences are designed and executed in such a way that allows the visual and auditory presentation to milk the last ounce of machismo from the protagonist and the many antagonists. The result is a film that will give you a thousand reasons to cheer in its runtime.

KGF Chapter 1 turned out one of the biggest blockbusters due to its unprecedented elevations and making. That raised more expectations for Chapter 2 and the movie hit the screens today, after a long wait. KGF Chapter 2 made a huge prerelease business worldwide already. With the protagonist Yash being the center of the KGF story, this time the new stars Raveena Tandon and Sanjay Dutt joined in to make it much bigger. Directed by Prashant Neel, KGF Chapter 2 was released with huge hype, and here is the review from the US Premieres.

What Is It About?

The famous journalist Anand had to stop narrating the story of Rocky and KGF due to a heart stroke and his son Vijayendra Vasiraju (Prakash Raj) continues the narration. While the first chapter concluded with Rocky killing Garuda in a most shocking way, the second chapter deals with Rocky’s rule in KGF with new and unexpected enemies like Ramika Sen (Raveena Tandon) and Adheera (Sanjay Dutt) trying to take him down. How Rocky deals with his rivals and how he keeps the KGF under his thumb is all about the KGF Chapter 2.

Performances

For those who have watched the first Chapter, it is needless to explain that Yash continues the same mannerisms, style, and body language in this one too. Yash keeps up with the elevation scenes and action blocks, and he did well like earlier. The catch is that the story is completely based on elevations and fights that come in regular intervals.

Srinidhi Shetty had been given the grumpy expression that she put up in the first part and she continues the same. She has got nothing much really. Raveena Tandon appears in a strong role, but only for a brief part in the second half. She did alright in it.

Sanjay Dutt is shown as the most powerful and the mighty Adheera. There are scenes where Adheera appears the strongest and scariest, but there are also other scenes where he looks weak and dull.

Prakash Raj, Rao Ramesh, and others are fine in their respective roles and they mostly go in a flat track.

Technicalities

KGF has set the expectations on how rugged and rustic the film could be. The Chapter is no different with the dark smoke and dirt all around. The cinematography is very good and there are certain action blocks that are elevated with the set frames. The visuals are rich.

The background score is good and in fact loud at times. The screenplay is well set and so is the editing. The trimming of some slow episodes in the second half could have delivered a crisp run time.

Yash Some Action Episodes

Thumbs Down

Slow Second Half Illogical scenes Love track Some Pale Elevations

KGF Chapter 1 dealt with an outraged man taking the throne of the biggest gold mine by killing many big heads, which no one ever expected to happen. If the first part is about the rise of Rocky Bhai, the chapter is about his rule. The fearless and arrogant Rocky Bhai ruling the KGF and locking horns with the government of India is shown in this part.

Needless to say, the first part of KGF grabbed the spotlight all of a sudden due to high-octane action scenes that involve never-before elevations. The director simply repeated the same template here in the second part, except that his best elevations remained in the previous part. The plots and plans by Rocky Bhai were surprising and impressive back then, but most of them in this chapter could be anticipated.

Comparisons apart, Rocky and the ruthless Adheera confrontation scenes are interesting. Also, the climax fight between the both is engaging. The director bringing back the hammer of Rocky to face the mighty sword of Adheera is one of the good action parts.

Rocky testing the big gun at the police station is the scene that completely thrills the audience. Rocky’s visit to the police station just for one gold bar depicts how rigid he is. The firing of bullets for minutes and the red hot gun barrel shows the intensity of how particular he is for anything he wants.

In the car chase scene in the first half, Rocky taking Adheera down with ‘Kalashnikov’ armory remains among the decent action scenes.

Rocky coming face to face with the Prime Minister herself in her office with a case file and declaring his arrival and capacity is one of the highlight scenes.

Coming to the dialogues, Rocky’s mannerism of speaking in broken English worked only a little this time, but there are mention-worthy dialogues like, Biryani – Qurbani, Mongoose in Snake and Ladder game, the CEO of India, Powerful people make places powerful, Rocky’s gravity, etc.

The first half goes alright with racy narration, elevations (not as powerful as in the first part), and some powerful action episodes. The second half slows down with Adheera missing for a long time and the love track which also comes with an uninteresting song.

There is another track with Gurupandian politics in between the war of PM and Rocky Bhai. The narration at times feels racy, but most of the time it appears rushed, leaving no time for the audience to compile on what’s happening.

KGF itself is mainly based on heroism and elevations, but too many of the stunts and sycophancy without any depth in it failed to impress here. There are scenes that come and go without an actual emotion. It is like a fort of elevations alone, that may make the mass and action-loving fans look up. The reason why Rocky is after the gold is revealed in the end, but it does not really make sense when we recap everything he did for it. Well, the director left a hint in Chapter 3 that probably shows Rocky’s international crime.

Overall, KGF Chapter 2 has all the pages filled with hype and elevations in bold, but the story only in very few lines in a small font in a preface. The First Chapter of KGF was enjoyed hugely by the masses due to the stunning elevations and action scenes, but the second chapter came out with similar stuff and with more expectations. KGF Chapter 2 may get on well if and only the mass audience once again embraces it.

Bottom line: Not A Monster

Rating: 2.75/5

VIKRAM MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Vikram is a film written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and produced by Raaj Kamal Films International. It has Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, and Fahadh Faasil in the lead roles while Narain, Kalidas Jayaram, Gayathrie Shankar and others play crucial supporting roles. Actor Suriya has played a cameo as well. The film has cinematography by Girish Gangadharan and music by Anirudh Ravichander.

It is widely known that Lokesh Kanagaraj is a huge fan of Kamal Haasan and all his films have been greatly inspired by Kamal films. When such a fanboy gets an opportunity to direct his idol, what does he do? The answer lies in Vikram.

Recently there have been many films of top tier actors made by directors who are the actors' ardent fans. But when was the last time, such a film was made with very little screentime for the star till the interval. In fact, with Vikram, Kamal Haasan is stripped of all his heroism while Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi steal all the thunder in the first half. And it is Vijay Sethupathi who gets a heroic introduction.

However the second half gives all Kamal fans one whistle worthy moment after another, and the man is in full form as Agent Vikram/Karnan. Just like Kaithi, there is a strong emotional base that is topped with stellar, stylish action blocks that make you go wow. The only difference is that, Kaithi was filled with brawls, while it is replaced with guns and firearms in Vikram.

Not just that, with Vikram, Lokesh has created his own universe of films that got its potential to be explored after the addition of Suriya (cameo as Rolex). The performances of all the leads look like a healthy competition between themselves as you have 3 acting monsters upfront in the form of Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh and the Ulaganayagan himself.

While the writing is slightly generic in a lot of places, they are made engaging by Anirudh's background score which is refreshing. He doesn't rely just on the 'Once Upon a Time' or Wasted themes to hype up the scenes. The variety in the background score is definitely a plus for the film.

Girish Gangadharan's camerawork captures Kamal's expressions with the right mix of close-ups and editor Philomin Raj deserves equal praise for that. Stunt sequences choreographed by Anbariv masters remind you of their work in KGF and Beast but there are clever subversions from those choreos which you'll realise while you watch the film.

Overall, with the writing and performances holding the film high for most parts, the music and cinematography only makes the experience better for us. More importantly, Lokesh has proven that it is possible for Tamil cinema to create a cinematic universe parallel to the cinematic universes of Hollywood. Vikram entertains and engages you well, and is definitely worth watching more than once.
