What makes you click an article when you’re scrolling on your phone? If you think about it, it’s usually the headline. Out of the hundreds of stories we scan in a day, we're most likely to click and read something when the headline feels urgent, relevant, or clever. 

The same principles apply when it comes to your resume: A strong headline will draw recruiters into the story of you— and entice them to keep reading.

As a certified professional resume writer who has written hundreds (and I mean hundreds ) of resumes, I strongly recommend using a headline. Whether you’re fresh out of college and looking for your first “real” job, or you're 20+ years into your career and eyeing the C-suite, a brilliant headline can make all the difference in landing a job interview.

Here’s everything you need to know about what resume headlines are, why they work, and how to add one to the resume you’ll use to land your next job.

What is a resume headline or resume title?

A resume headline is a concise description of your work experience, placed right at the top of your resume. It goes below your name and contact information, and above your summary or opening resume section . Your resume headline usually pairs a job title with a brief phrase or two that relates to the job you’re pursuing. It’s where you tell a decision maker—who is most likely skimming dozens of applications at a time—that you’re a great fit for the job.

Why should I use a resume headline?

Resume headlines work because they allow you to frame who you are and your core value proposition  to the recruiter or hiring manager right away. This is your chance to say that you’re exactly what they’re looking for and prompt them to keep reading. 

A headline also gives you a better shot at getting noticed because you can weave relevant keywords into this part of your resume. Keywords (job titles, skills, educational credentials, etc.) that align with the job description can increase the odds of your resume passing through an applicant tracking system (ATS) and landing in front of human reviewers who will ultimately make the hiring decisions.

So, what does a resume headline look like? Here are three different templates you can use to write your own.

When writing resumes for my clients, I typically use this formula:

Keyword-Rich Supporting Statement Showcasing Something That Makes You a Standout for That Role

You might also consider a single-line headline that combines your title with an attention-grabbing phrase, something like this:

Job Title with X Years’ Experience Doing This Directly Relevant Thing

Job Title Who Achieved This Very Impressive Result

Certainly, you could go with one to three titles without the descriptive subhead or phrase. This is sometimes called a resume title, and it’s better than having no headline at all. But I’d argue it’s a missed opportunity to share something specific that ties your capabilities to the requirements of a job.

Whether you choose to use a resume title in your headline or keep it to just one line is really a matter of personal preference. What’s important is that you have one in the first place—and use it to your advantage.

6 ways to write a great resume headline

A compelling headline will be both keyword-rich and provide a short and snappy elevator pitch—something that summarizes what you’re all about in relation to the job or jobs you’re pursuing. Here’s what I recommend:

1. Position yourself for the job you want (but don’t lie)

Again, your goal is to set the stage with recruiters and hiring managers that you’re exactly what they’re looking for. Given this, the more closely you can align your resume to the job or jobs you want next—without making stuff up, of course—the better. 

For instance, if you’re a marketing manager who’s built a successful e-commerce platform for your current employer and you’re applying for jobs at companies looking for a marketing leader with e-commerce experience, you’d be wise to announce that you’re a marketing leader with that specific experience in your headline.

2. Tailor your headline for each role you pursue

Building on tip number one, keep in mind that your resume headline is not a tattoo. You can, and should, modify your headline as needed if you’re applying for jobs with varying requirements.

So if you’re that same marketing manager and you’re applying for another job that emphasizes social media marketing—and you also have experience doing that—you shouldn’t hesitate to swap out the e-commerce mention for something more specific to social media.

3. Keep it concise

Brevity and strategy are key with your headline. If you’re using a job title and a phrase on the next line—like my team typically does—your whole headline should take up two lines max.

Otherwise, your headline should be a succinct one-liner combining title(s) with a powerful phrase about your fitness for this job. 

4. Avoid clichés

Don’t waste valuable real estate with vague terms like “results oriented” or clichés such as "thinks outside the box.” Recruiters see these lines so often that their eyes will likely skip over ’em, and that’s the opposite of your goal here. Instead, show your impact with a data point: X Job Title Who Increased Revenue by 150%, or similar. 

5. Use common job titles

If you’re looking for a job as a chief of staff and are basically working as one now, but have an oddball title that doesn’t immediately or clearly convey what you do, introduce yourself as a chief of staff in your headline. It all comes back to the keywords both the ATS and the people reading your resume are looking for. You don’t want to miss the chance to be considered for a full-stack engineering role because your current company uses the title “full-stack magician,” or be overlooked for a customer support role because your last company insisted on the title “weekend happiness concierge” (btw, those are real examples ).

6. Highlight accomplishments

Again, if you’re a top performer with impressive, quantifiable results to share, this is a great opportunity for you to show off. Take a look at the examples below to see what this could look like in action.

What does a resume headline actually look like? Let’s run through a few examples.

A general resume headline, and why it works

Say you’re a project and program manager who just earned your Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. You’ve selected a few project and program management jobs that you want to apply for and notice that this certification is consistently listed as a preferred qualification. (Hooray, you have it!) You’re also seeing a common theme among the job descriptions that got you excited: They all call for someone who has worked with SaaS (or software as a service) companies. Hooray again, you have.

Your headline, then, may look like this:

PMP-Certified Project Manager | Senior Program Manager

Delivering Complex Projects—On Time & Within Budget—for Global SaaS Providers

This keyword-rich title immediately tells the reviewer that you’re a project manager and a program manager and that you have the valuable PMP certification. The rest of the headline makes it clear that you have experience in a SaaS environment and know how to successfully deliver projects on deadline and within budget. You’ll also notice that every word in the headline and subhead earns its spot on the page. There is no fluff. There are no clichés.

Everything works together to bring the reader into your story and make them eager to continue into your summary section.

A recent graduate resume headline, and why it works

Next up, how about a mechanical engineering graduate who is looking for engineering jobs in the robotics industry? This time, we’ll go with a headline that combines title and power phrase in a single line:

This one capitalizes on the prestige of a Purdue University engineering degree and showcases the candidate’s experience with a specific requirement of many robotics engineering jobs: the ability to program a robot.

What’s a Resume Headline & Why It’s Important?

Article comparisons aside, a resume headline is a catchy one-liner that highlights your experience and skills , briefly introducing you to the recruiter. 

Why is it so important?

Well, typically recruiters skim over each resume for a brief 7 seconds only and then decide if it’s going to the “rejection” or “maybe” pile of resumes. 

Your goal is to not only make it to the “maybe” pile but also to convince the recruiter you’re a top candidate. 

Your resume headline basically dishes your skills out and shows the recruiter you’re relevant for the position right away.

If it’s written the right way, it will encourage them to read further. 

That said, there’s also another awesome advantage of using a resume header:

It will help get your resume past an Applicant Tracking System.

An Applicant Tracking System, or ATS in short, is the recruiters’ best friend. It’s a type of software that scans the resumes of all applicants and sends the recruiter only the “matches”. 

About 75% of applicants are rejected through this process alone! 

So, how does the software work? Well, ATS scans your resume, looking for relevant keywords and experiences. If it doesn’t find them, the resume is automatically rejected.

Having a good resume headline, though, helps prevent this, as the software can immediately see your professional title and identify that you’re relevant for the job.

Resume Headline VS Resume Title - What’s the Difference?

Before we teach you how to write a compelling resume headline, here’s a quick memo:

A resume headline is not the same thing as a resume title .

Both of them need to be carefully written and targeted to the job position, but they have their differences. 

While a resume title simply states your professional title, a resume headline also mentions your skills and years of experience. 

To make things clearer, let’s say you’re an HR specialist applying for an HR manager’s position. Your title would be:

  • Human Resources Specialist

Whereas, your resume headline would be:

  • HR specialist with 4+ years of experience in helping medium to large corporations hire IT professionals.

How to Write a Resume Headline

The fact that it’s so short makes writing a resume headline both easy and hard. 

You only have to sit down and write a few words, BUT those few words have to be well-thought and spot-on. 

Although there’s no set rule on how a headline should look, the structure below has become pretty standard:

Job Title + Years of Experience + Skill/Specific Task/Impressive Achievement

Get that right and you’re already halfway towards a perfect resume headline!

For that other 50%, keep in mind the following tips:

  • Keep it short. The point of the header itself is to give a concise statement that can be read in a matter of seconds. If it’s longer than a catchy one sentence, it turns into a resume objective or resume summary .
  • Place it right. Your resume headline should be the first thing to come right after your name and surname. It is an introduction to everything else on your resume, after all.
  • Use title case and a slightly larger font than the rest of the text. Your resume headline should stand out. Make sure it’s not too exaggerated or flashy, though.
  • Use action verbs and power words instead of overused terms like “motivated” or “team-player”. Stick to concrete skills that you can support with your experiences.
  • Present over future. This is not the place to talk about your career goals , so focus on what you currently do and what you have achieved so far.
  • 1-2 skills max. You should leave the rest for the skills section and only mention your top skill/s that also match what the job you’re applying for requires.
  • If you’re a recent graduate with no work experience , focus on your top skills and proficiencies , as well as any impressive extracurricular experience .
  • On the same note, if you only have around 1 or 2 years of experience, we’d recommend focusing more on your achievements and skills instead of experiences.
  • New job, new headline. Since it’s the first thing the recruiter reads on your resume, make sure it’s targeted to the position you are applying for.
  • Write many and pick one. For each application, write down a few versions of your headline, check how they look and sound, and pick the one that seems like the best way to describe yourself.

Thousands of success stories: for the last decade, eastin center for career readiness has helped many osu students.

Max Rauner finally got the job interview he always wanted. Now what was he supposed to do?

The senior from Tulsa, Oklahoma, had a resume chock-full of on-campus volunteering, selections to the Oklahoma State University President’s Honor Roll and industry know-how thanks to the top-notch faculty in the Spears School of Business Department of Management Science and Information Systems.

But now he would have to sit face-to-face with four industry professionals and get peppered with questions for two hours, which is an intimidating prospect for a student who last wore a suit at his high school prom.

Rauner’s head started to spin. What questions are they going to ask? Should he wear a tie? Are there things he should definitely mention? Are there things he definitely shouldn’t mention? How does he make sure he stands out while still coming across professionally?

Luckily, Rauner remembered he had an ace up his sleeve — the Eastin Center for Career Readiness.

He reached out to his Eastin Center career coach, Mike Stump, who calmed his nerves and ran him through a couple of rounds of interview prep. The two had worked together for years crafting Rauner’s resume, applying to internships and learning the soft skills of business designed to give him an edge over other college graduates entering the workforce. When Rauner walked into his interview, he couldn’t have felt more prepared and energized.

“It felt like I had a cheat code,” said Rauner, using a video game reference to describe his newfound confidence. “It’s almost like I knew every question they were going to ask me, and I had a story inside my head that I wanted to give them for each answer. Without Mike’s guidance, there’s no way I would have even gotten the interview, let alone performed as well as I did.”

Rauner got the job, of course. His drive to succeed matched up with his first-class OSU education thanks largely to the expertise of the MSIS faculty, and the Eastin Center helped him showcase himself in a way that set him apart.

That day, he joined the ever-growing list of Eastin Center success stories. The folks at the Eastin Center aren’t much for bragging about themselves, but they do a remarkable job preparing students to step into the professional world. In 2024, the center is celebrating its 10th anniversary and the thousands of students who have had their trajectories changed.

From 2020-23 alone, the Eastin Center reviewed 5,265 student resumes, hosted 2,040 mock interviews and 3,647 one-on-one coaching appointments. In fall 2022, the Eastin team piloted a new career readiness appointment focusing on steps students should take at OSU to be career-ready upon graduation. Over 500 students have participated so far, and 91% reported feeling more confident about their career path following the session.

Nearly 5,000 Spears Business students attended an OSU career fair from 2020-23, and they were able to highlight their new skills to employers who are often instantly impressed with the preparation level of the Spears Business students they encounter.

“There is a difference,” said Spencer Nast, a Texas Christian University alumnus and a recruiter for the Sewell Automotive Group in Texas. “There is a noticeable difference in the quality of student that goes through the Spears School of Business, and that specifically works with the Eastin Center, versus another student at OSU or at other universities.

“Many schools don’t prepare their students for taking that next step. They don’t teach them how to dress professionally or how to have a conversation with an employer, or even how to ask those tough questions. The Eastin Center just has a pulse on the industry, on the real world. That’s why I believe they’re so effective.”

That effectiveness isn’t an accident. It started with a vision from a Spears Business alumnus who wanted to find a way to give OSU students the extra tools they needed. Joe Eastin, founder of web-based contractor and management system supplier ISN, knew that OSU students were every bit as smart as their peers at other schools. Still, he wanted to find a way to help the university’s alumni stand out in terms of their professional demeanor and preparedness.

His initial gift in 2014 got the ball rolling for the center, and his leadership as the chair of its advisory board has helped the center evolve and grow over the years. That evolutionary process is one of the center’s key features, which heavily involves its alumni board and businesses across the region to guide its approach.

The board meets regularly to sharpen the Eastin Center’s focus and ensure it remains at the forefront of business. The employers educate the Eastin Center staff about their needs and what makes a worker stand out within their organization. This approach has helped the Eastin Center develop into one of the leading job preparation centers in the country.

“We want to do something slightly different here at the Spears School of Business,” Eastin said. “In no way is the Eastin Center trying to replace the core technical skills that are required in business today; it is to be in conjunction with what you’ve learned at Oklahoma State. Without having both — the technical skills and the soft skills — you’re truly limiting your ability to expand your career potential.”

One giant evolutionary step the Eastin Center took was requiring Spears Business students to use its core services. Starting in 2018, career-readiness courses BADM 2111 (Career Planning for Business Success) and BADM 3111 (Professional Development for Business Success) became a part of the core curriculum of the college, and one-on-one coaching appointments with Eastin Center professionals became a graduation requirement for business students.

Since that step, 20,159 Spears Business students have taken BADM 2111 and/or BADM 3111. Those classes and the one-on-one coaching have helped OSU students network with employers, refine their communication skills and create career goals that align with their major, interests and strengths.

Former Eastin Center director Dr. Abbey Davis credits the curriculum update and graduation requirement as the key to the center’s impact because it introduced thousands of new students to the skills needed to succeed.

“We know that to develop new skills and to develop confidence, you have to repeatedly perform that task,” Davis said. “I can’t tell you how to be good in an interview. I can’t tell you how to write a good resume, we have to do it together. And so that’s what we do, and we do it in a way that forces students to really develop that muscle. And what I love is at the end of every semester, I’ll have a student come up to me and say, ‘Abbey, I got an internship because you made me apply for one.’ I love hearing that.”

Davis was essential in bringing Stump to the Eastin Center in 2018 after his 35-year career in human resources. A seasoned vet of the corporate world, Stump had been a part of thousands of job interviews, performance reviews, layoffs and promotions. In other words, he is exactly the type of person Davis envisioned lending advice to Spears Business students.

The Eastin Center career coaches, led by center director Robin Darmon and manager Susanne Badiyan, host outreach events each month and they split up the Spears Business student body by major in order to develop an individual plan for each student.

It starts with resume reviews, mock interviews and teaching the students how to search for internships and fulltime jobs. The coaches reinforce the skills learned in the BADM 2111 and 3111 courses, including things like the S.T.A.R. Method (the acronym stands for situation, task, action and result) of answering behavioral-based questions in a sequential and organized way. Constructive feedback is a big key to the Eastin Center process, and Stump said it’s essential that students know the advice is coming from a loving place.

“The joke around here is, that’s the secret sauce that we have,” Stump said of the combination of the required BADM courses and the Eastin Center coaches. “I think it’s a big deal because it ends up giving our kids a huge advantage. The analogy that I like to use is that we’re teaching these students to fish in order to give them lifelong career-readiness skills as opposed to handing them a fish so they can get by today. These are skills they’ll be able to use two, five and 10 years down the road. Our graduates will have a distinct advantage there.”

Stump keeps a folder in his desk drawer full of handwritten cards and tokens of appreciation from students he’s worked with over the past four and a half years. One of those thank-you cards is from Rauner. The two developed a bond during their time as mentor and mentee that started back when Rauner didn’t even know what jobs an MIS degree could land him.

Partly because of that relationship, Rauner ended up joining the Eastin Center staff as a student worker to help other Spears Business students navigate this daunting space. Now, he’s the one in the advisor’s seat helping students craft their resumes and learning the soft skills of the business world. It’s helped him gain a new appreciation for the center’s mission and the impact it’s had on so many OSU students.

“Looking back now, I think the Eastin Center is the best thing about OSU,” Rauner said. “It’s done more for me than any of my classes. It’s prepared me for what actually goes on in the business world. It’s helped me understand what really happens and what it takes to nail a job interview and to get a job – all the stuff that you don’t necessarily get in classes.

“If you go to the Eastin Center, you ask those questions, they’re going to teach you.”

The Supreme Court rejects a nationwide opioid settlement with OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a nationwide settlement with OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma that would have shielded members of the Sackler family who own the company from civil lawsuits over the toll of opioids but also would have provided billions of dollars to combat the opioid epidemic .

The decision also could affect other major bankruptcies, including the $2.4 billion bankruptcy plan for the Boy Scouts of America that has been approved by a federal judge, lawyers said.

After deliberating more than six months, the justices in a 5-4 vote blocked an agreement hammered out with state and local governments and victims. The Sacklers would have contributed up to $6 billion and given up ownership of the company but retained billions more. The agreement provided that the company would emerge from bankruptcy as a different entity, with its profits used for treatment and prevention.

Justice Neil Gorsuch, writing for the majority, said “nothing in present law authorizes the Sackler discharge.”

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor dissented.

“Opioid victims and other future victims of mass torts will suffer greatly in the wake of today’s unfortunate and destabilizing decision,” Kavanaugh wrote.

The high court had put the settlement on hold last summer, in response to objections from the Biden administration.

It’s unclear what happens next, though people involved in the case said they expect talks to resume. The members of the Sackler family branches who own Purdue suggested they’ll return to negotiations.

“The unfortunate reality is that the alternative is costly and chaotic legal proceedings in courtrooms across the country,” they said in a statement. “While we are confident that we would prevail in any future litigation given the profound misrepresentations about our families and the opioid crisis, we continue to believe that a swift negotiated agreement to provide billions of dollars for people and communities in need is the best way forward.”

Edward Neiger, a lawyer representing more than 60,000 overdose victims, called the decision a major setback.

“The Purdue plan was a victim-centered plan that would provide billions of dollars to the states to be used exclusively to abate the opioid crisis and $750 million for victims of the crisis, so that they could begin to rebuild their lives,” Neiger said in a statement. “As a result of the senseless three-year crusade by the government against the plan, thousands of people died of overdose, and today’s decision will lead to more needless overdose deaths.”

An opponent of the settlement praised the outcome.

Ed Bisch’s 18-year-old son Eddie, died from an overdose after taking OxyContin in Philadelphia in 2001.

The older Bisch, who lives in New Jersey, has been speaking out against Purdue and Sackler family members ever since and is part of a relatively small but vocal group of victims and family members who opposed the settlement.

“This is a step toward justice. It was outrageous what they were trying to get away with,” he said Thursday. “They have made a mockery of the justice system and then they tried to make a mockery of the bankruptcy system.”

He said he would have accepted the deal if he thought it would have made a dent in the opioid crisis.

He’s now calling on the Department of Justice to seek criminal charges against Sackler family members

Arguments in early December lasted nearly two hours in a packed courtroom as the justices seemed, by turns, unwilling to disrupt a carefully negotiated settlement and reluctant to reward the Sacklers.

The issue for the justices was whether the legal shield that bankruptcy provides can be extended to people such as the Sacklers , who have not declared bankruptcy themselves. Lower courts had issued conflicting decisions over that issue, which also has implications for other major product liability lawsuits settled through the bankruptcy system.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Trustee, an arm of the Justice Department, argued that the bankruptcy law does not permit protecting the Sackler family from being sued. During the Trump administration, the government supported the settlement.

The Biden administration had argued to the court that negotiations could resume, and perhaps lead to a better deal, if the court were to stop the current agreement.

Proponents of the plan said third-party releases are sometimes necessary to forge an agreement, and federal law imposes no prohibition against them.

But the court majority that also included Justices Samuel Alito, Amy Coney Barrett, Ketanji Brown Jackson and Clarence Thomas disagreed.

“The Sacklers seek greater relief than a bankruptcy discharge normally affords, for they hope to extinguish even claims for wrongful death and fraud, and they seek to do so without putting anything close to all their assets on the table,” Gorsuch wrote. “Nor is what the Sacklers seek a traditional release, for they hope to have a court extinguish claims of opioid victims without their consent.”

Congress could write special rules for opioid-related bankruptcies, he wrote.

And Kavanaugh, in dissent, urged lawmakers to do just that. “Only Congress can fix the chaos that will now ensue,” he wrote.

Jason Amala, a lawyer representing more than 1,000 men who allege they were sexually abused as children by Boy Scout leaders and volunteers, said the decision could affect the Boy Scouts plan and others that employ similar releases from liability.

“The Supreme Court’s decision is pretty simple,” Amala said in a statement. “If you hurt someone, you and your insurance company will have to pay fair value to settle their claim. If you want bankruptcy protection, you will have to file your own bankruptcy, disclose your assets and liabilities, and pay whatever amount a bankruptcy judge decides is appropriate.”

OxyContin first hit the market in 1996, and Purdue Pharma’s aggressive marketing of it is often cited as a catalyst of the nationwide opioid epidemic, with doctors persuaded to prescribe painkillers with less regard for addiction dangers.

The drug and the Stamford, Connecticut-based company became synonymous with the crisis, even though the majority of pills being prescribed and used were generic drugs. Opioid-related overdose deaths have continued to climb, hitting 80,000 in recent years. Most of those are from fentanyl and other synthetic drugs.

The Purdue Pharma settlement would have ranked among the largest reached by drug companies, wholesalers and pharmacies to resolve epidemic-related lawsuits filed by state, local and Native American tribal governments and others. Those settlements have totaled more than $50 billion.

But the Purdue Pharma settlement would have been only the second so far to include direct payments to victims from a $750 million pool. Payouts would have ranged from about $3,500 to $48,000.

Sackler family members no longer are on the company’s board, and they have not received payouts from it since before Purdue Pharma entered bankruptcy. In the decade before that, though, they were paid more than $10 billion, about half of which family members said went to pay taxes.

The case is Harrington v. Purdue Pharma, 22-859.

Supreme Court blocks Purdue Pharma opioid settlement, threatening billions of dollars for victims

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday blew up the massive bankruptcy reorganization of opioid maker Purdue Pharma, finding that the settlement inappropriately included legal protections for the Sackler family, meaning that billions of dollars secured for victims is now threatened.

The court on a 5-4 vote on nonideological lines ruled that the bankruptcy court did not have the authority to release the Sackler family members from legal claims made by opioid victims.

In aftermath of the decision, the Sackler family, Purdue Pharma and lawyers for the plaintiffs expressed hope that a new deal could quickly be reached.

As part of the original settlement, the family, which controlled the company, had agreed to pay $6 billion that could be used to settle opioid-related claims, but only in return for a complete release from any liability in future cases.

Conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch, writing for the majority, said the Sacklers could have declared bankruptcy but instead sought to piggyback on the company's own bankruptcy proceedings in an effort to resolve pending legal claims.

"They obtained all this without securing the consent of those affected or placing anything approaching their total assets on the table for their creditors," Gorsuch wrote.

"Nothing in present law authorizes the Sackler discharge," he added.

Gorsuch was joined in the majority by three of his conservative colleagues and one liberal, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh dissented, citing the impact of the decision on those who would benefit from the settlement.

"Today's decision is wrong on the law and devastating to the more than 100,000 opioid victims and their families," he wrote.

As a result of the ruling, "opioid victims are now deprived of the substantial monetary recovery that they long fought for and finally secured after years of litigation," he added.

Fellow conservative Chief Justice John Roberts joined Kavanaugh's dissent, as did liberal justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor.

The ruling means settlement talks with the Sacklers would have to begin again, while the separate Purdue Pharma bankruptcy proceedings continue.

Purdue Pharma described the ruling as "heart-crushing" because of the impact on victims, but pledged to move forward with efforts to negotiate a new settlement.

"The decision does nothing to deter us from the twin goals of using settlement dollars for opioid abatement and turning the company into an engine for good," the statement said.

A statement issued by members of the Sackler family said they "remain hopeful about reaching a resolution that provides substantial resources to help combat a complex public health crisis."

"While we are confident that we would prevail in any future litigation given the profound misrepresentations about our families and the opioid crisis, we continue to believe that a swift negotiated agreement to provide billions of dollars for people and communities in need is the best way forward," they added.

Jayne Conroy, a lawyer representing some of the plaintiffs, said that various lawsuits against the Sacklers that were put on hold as a result of the settlement would resume if no new deal is reached.

The Sacklers will be under "a lot of pressure" to reach a quick settlement or face "a massive onslaught to secure assets that may be hidden around the world," she added.

The case drew further attention to the lingering effects of the opioid crisis and the role that Sackler-owned Purdue played in creating it.

As part of the proposed deal, which the Supreme Court put on hold last year when it took up the case, the Sackler family had agreed to pay around $6 billion that could be used to settle opioid-related claims, but only in return for a complete release from any liability in future cases.

The settlement, including assets held by Purdue, would be worth significantly more, with the reorganized company set to dedicate itself to tackling the impact of opioid abuse.

No Sacklers have had any involvement in the company since 2019.

Purdue made billions from OxyContin, a widely available painkiller that fueled the opioid epidemic. The company’s tactics in aggressively marketing the drug came under increasing scrutiny as thousands of people died from opioid overdoses.

As the company’s fortunes nosedived, it sought bankruptcy protection, but the Sackler family members did not. Instead, they negotiated a separate deal with Purdue and plaintiffs in pending lawsuits that would allow the company to reinvent itself to address the opioid crisis.

The New York-based 2nd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals last year approved the plan over the objection of William Harrington, the U.S. government trustee monitoring the bankruptcy. The Justice Department’s trustee program is aimed at ensuring that the bankruptcy system operates as required under law.

Harrington objected to the release of additional claims against the Sacklers, saying it would be unfair to potential future plaintiffs.

Purdue criticized Harrington’s role, saying that groups representing thousands of plaintiffs have signed on to the settlement, which could not have happened without the Sackler family contribution.

At the Supreme Court, various groups representing plaintiffs backed Purdue, including one that includes 1,300 cities, counties and other municipalities and another representing 60,000 people affected by the opioid epidemic.

Canadian municipalities and Indigenous First Nations were among those objecting to the settlement.

Purdue flourished under brothers Mortimer and Raymond Sackler, who died in 2010 and 2017, respectively. The family reaped billions and spent lavishly, including on splashy charitable projects .

The family told the Supreme Court that it continues to back the settlement.

In a brief filed on behalf of the relatives of Mortimer Sackler, most of whom are based overseas, lawyers warned of “significant litigation costs and risks” in seeking to enforce any foreign court judgments against the family if the settlement were thrown out.

We have so much to discuss that I truly don’t know where to begin. A champion has been crowned, there is free agency, the draft and so much more.

Away we go …

Do you agree that no matter what, the losing player should never win the Conn Smythe? Doesn’t matter how many points. It’s the worst participation award ever. — @AKAFloyd 

Yes, I do agree with you. I feel compelled to start here since half of Alberta wants my blood following my Monday night tweet.

So, here’s where I stand. Connor McDavid is the world’s greatest hockey player. In fact, he’s one of the best ever. Top five already, perhaps. What he did this spring was mesmerizing. And, yes, I realize this award goes to the MVP of the postseason, not the Stanley Cup Final. I’m not anti-McDavid, I assure you. I used to drive to Erie to watch him play when he was 15, and not for the sake of writing articles, but rather, for the sake of watching him play.

For starters, I’m not a believer in a player who doesn’t win the Cup ever winning this award. It’s not the postseason’s most outstanding player award. It’s the most valuable player. I can’t conceive of how the most valuable player doesn’t come from the team that won the Stanley Cup. They’re the Stanley Cup playoffs, after all. Let’s just rename the award if this is what we want.

Also, as great as McDavid was, he was held without a point in three of the seven games against Florida . He was held without a point in the final two games of the Stanley Cup Final. Most noteworthy, I think, is that he was held without a point in Game 7, when the whole hockey world was watching, when the Cup was in the building. He was quiet in the first two periods of that game. No, he didn’t choke. Hardly. But he didn’t rise up in that moment, either.

I’m not here to bash McDavid. He’s a treasure and I bet Edmonton wins the whole thing next year. But I feel like McDavid being crowned the Conn Smythe winner was the hockey media’s way of articulating to the masses that we were all witnessing greatness. No kidding. In a sense, that trophy was almost beneath McDavid. He didn’t need that recognition for his greatness to be appreciated.

I know many of you disagree with me. And that’s OK. Trust me, I understand why he won the award and I understand why most people were fine with it. But I just wasn’t a fan of McDavid winning this award. I found it a little disrespectful to the team that actually won the Cup.

Numerous goalies have been traded lately. Is the window closing on trading Jarry? — @mikeyp3258

This is a perfectly fair question. In general, we don’t see goalies traded very often. However, I can’t recall a period in recent years when this many otherwise good teams were badly in need of help between the pipes.

From everything I’ve heard in recent days, the Pittsburgh Penguins are certainly willing to trade Tristan Jarry . I think it’s all about finding a trade partner at this point. Maybe they will, maybe they won’t. The guy has talent, but I believe a trade would be the best thing for him and the best thing for the Penguins .

It only takes one team to make it happen.

Why does Jarry fade in the second half? Physical conditioning? Mental conditioning? Too many Iron Citys? — @JamMasterJim

I’ve not heard that he has a problem with Iron City consumption, so I don’t think that’s the answer.

I will say this: Numerous people who are no longer in the Penguins organization, but who were when Jarry was a member of the team, have told me that physical conditioning was never his strength. I’ll counter that by saying that Andy Chiodo, the team’s goalie coach, has noted that Jarry has greatly improved in this area over the years.

We can’t deny, however, that his numbers dip dramatically in the second half of the season.

Do you think the team’s opinion of Jarry changed after he stared down Marcus Pettersson during that loss to Dallas? — @de6588

How active do you think Dubas will be at the draft? Will he try to land a first-round pick? — @GrizzlyAdam930

My sense is that he wants to be very active. To be active, however, requires that Kyle Dubas find the right dance partners.

Does Dubas want to shed the Penguins of Reilly Smith ’s contract? Yes, I believe so.

Does Dubas want to send the Penguins of Jarry’s contract? I think he’s considering it, absolutely.

Would he like to ditch some other contracts? Sure. But he will manage to do so? Free agency opens in four days. It’s a pretty strong free-agent group. There are a number of players in this group that could help the Penguins significantly.

But the Penguins only have around $10 million in cap space. This is a real problem.

Dubas wants to ditch salary and add draft picks. Those two items often go hand in hand. But he still needs teams to work with him. We’ll see if they’re willing.

And sure, Dubas would love to land a first-round pick. That probably seems unlikely, though.

What’s your best-case scenario this offseason for the Pens? What’s your worst case? — @LittleMac0816

Best case: Trade Smith for a mid-level draft pick or prospect. Trade Jarry for a first- or second-round pick. (Finding a taker for Ryan Graves would be a dream come true for the Penguins, but I can’t in good faith say that this is possible.)

With the $20 million in cap space, sign Jake DeBrusk to play on Sidney Crosby ’s left wing. Sign a couple of other legitimate forwards to help the bottom six. Start stockpiling picks and prospects.

Worst case: Dubas can’t find any takers for Smith, Jarry, Graves, or whoever else he wants to unload. Thus, the Penguins ultimately look a lot like last year’s team, only a year older. And the staleness continues.

Easy question: Do you suspect that Sid’s contract has already been negotiated and he will sign on July 1? — @Scrivener1A

I doubt the specifics have been negotiated but I think both sides have a good understanding of what the numbers ultimately will be. Crosby is going to receive whatever it is he desires. Dubas, I promise you, isn’t going to play hardball with the captain.

Crosby might take more than the $8.7 million that has been his preferred salary during most of his career. That’s his right if he requests it. He’s always outplayed his contract. But I also think the Penguins realize Crosby isn’t going to make outrageous demands. There is no detectable stress from either side of this situation, so far as I can tell.

Is the hiring of David Quinn a sign that Sully is on the hot seat, or is it Dubas’ way of saying he’s 100 percent to Sully being the guy? — @ItsBucnPrinny

I would say, without question, that it’s the latter.

Sure, Quinn has been a head coach in the NHL and possesses a strong resume. But I don’t see him as a threat to Mike Sullivan.

The fact is, Quinn and Sullivan are close friends. This doesn’t mean it was a bad hire. I don’t believe that it was. But Sullivan very clearly got his way with this hire. And, as I say all the time, I can’t emphasize enough how much Fenway Sports Group loves Sullivan. I’m telling you, he’s their guy.

Has there ever been an NHL head coach as consistently entertaining as Paul Maurice? — @h_kirk6

Not many, Hannah. Maurice was the star of the show all postseason. If a coach could win the Conn Smythe, it would be him. He’s funny, he’s smart, he’s honest and he loves the spotlight. He’s always been an incredibly likable guy and people like me, who are around coaches all the time, have always enjoyed dealing with him. I’m glad the hockey world was exposed to him for a full two months.

What moment of Crosby’s career will be used for his statue? — @Black33Beard

There is no shortage of options. But I have to look to Nov. 21, 2011, the night that gave us the “F yeah” goal from Crosby. He had missed almost a year with a concussion, finally returned that night against the Islanders , and scored a beautiful backhand goal on his second shift.

The enthusiasm from Crosby when he scored, the determination, the passion, the sense of the moment … what’s more Crosby than that? His celebration after that goal said it all and would make for a fine statue.

How long until the Pens make the playoffs again? — @poman927

Ask me in about a week. But Dubas better have one heck of a summer, because the odds are against them. The Rangers and Hurricanes aren’t going anywhere. New Jersey probably will rebound. It won’t be easy.

Changes that Jake Guentzel comes back? — @reykhu142586

I’ll say there’s about a 10 percent chance, which is to say, I wouldn’t completely rule it out, but I’d be very surprised.

Other teams have so much more money to offer Jake. The only way the Penguins have a chance to sign him would be if they shed a considerable amount of salary. It just seems very unlikely at this point.

I’ve always wondered why Sullivan didn’t like Ian Cole ? Any idea? — @johncwit

I think it was probably a personality clash. Cole has a bit of a class-clown personality. Sullivan doesn’t always take to players in that way.

Many believe Sullivan didn’t like how chummy Cole was with the local media. I know Cole believes this was part of the problem. Tough to say. Cole was actually forbidden from speaking with us for a few weeks in 2017, which became kind of bizarre. He would just smile and say, “Sorry Josh, can’t talk today.”

Keep in mind, these two have a lot of respect for each other. I don’t think there’s any bad blood. But Sullivan generally prefers his players behave a certain way. Not necessarily like robots. But I think you get the point.

What is Sid feeling before games? He almost never has an off night. Is he nervous? Excited? Doing yoga? — @wasawbee

If I truly understood how he thought, I’d be a better writer. I’m sure he still gets a little nervous. He’s human. But I think his mind is that of a simple machine, programmed to win and do nothing but win. I believe the last two years have represented a very foreign feeling for him.
