It's about strategically positioning yourself to catch the attention of potential employers, colleagues, and industry leaders. With the right techniques, LinkedIn becomes a powerful tool to amplify your professional presence and open doors to new networking opportunities.

Increasing LinkedIn views generally requires optimizing your LinkedIn profile, engaging with active groups, posting personal anecdotes and stories, and prioritizing quality connections. Read on to learn how to get more views on your LinkedIn profile and posts.

How to get more views on your LinkedIn profile

If you want to increase your LinkedIn visibility, there are a few different strategies you can use. Here are a few ways to increase your profile views.

Keyword optimization

If you only take one strategy from this article, make sure it’s this one: In order to be found on LinkedIn, you need to optimize your profile with keywords.

For example, a recruiter looking to fill an SEO marketing role might search for “SEO marketing” or “SEO marketer” on the platform. If you include these words in your profile, you are more likely to appear in a recruiter’s search results.

Headline Your headline is the little snippet of information people see when your profile pops up in search results. You absolutely need to have a few keywords here that are relevant to the job or industry you want to work in.

If you work in digital marketing, for example, your headline could look something like this: Digital Marketing Specialist | SEO Expert | Content Strategist.

To identify the right keywords for your profile, examine active job postings for the role you're targeting.

For instance, if you're aiming for a 'Digital Marketing Specialist' role, repeated terms like 'SEO', 'Google Analytics', 'Content Strategy', and 'PPC Campaigns' could be vital keywords for your LinkedIn profile.

Summary Your summary is one of the first sections people see when they navigate to your profile, so it needs to pack a punch. If you have any extra keywords that didn’t make it into your headline, put them here.

This is the perfect place to let some of your personality shine through, so go ahead and craft a narrative here that explains the type of work you’re doing and where you want to go. This way, recruiters and hiring managers can get a sense of how your past experiences and triumphs will make you successful at their company.

Experience At its most basic level, the “Experience” section is where you list the jobs you’ve had and the companies you’ve worked for. However, it’s also a place where you can (and should) include keywords to double down on your searchability.

You can do this by detailing your experiences in the “Description” section for each job role you include. The “Description” is the best place to list any industry-specific platforms or tools you used on the job. For example, if you worked with Quickbooks in your last finance role, mention it in the description for that position.

Skills & Endorsements LinkedIn has a separate section for "Skills & Endorsements". Here, you can list various skills you possess, from specific tools and platforms to broader abilities like leadership or project management. Your profile's credibility can be enhanced when other members endorse you for these skills.

It's essential to include the most relevant and crucial skills you want to showcase to potential employers and peers. For example, if "Quickbooks" is a significant tool you've used across multiple roles, you can add it to the "Skills" section.

So, before you comment on an update or like a post, make sure it’s genuine.

  • Less is more. Shorter posts do better than longer ones. Most users don’t have a lot of time to read a lengthy post, so you need to communicate your message as quickly and concisely as possible.
  • Structure matters. Break up your content into bite-sized paragraphs. This is easier on the eye for mobile and desktop users.
  • Incorporate visuals and multimedia. Why write a post that’s 100 words long when a picture or video can convey the same message? Multimedia and graphics are efficient ways to share ideas with your network.

Whether you’re actively job hunting or just want people to take notice of you, bedazzle your LinkedIn profile. Build up your LinkedIn profile views and make it a traffic magnet.

More LinkedIn profile views means more people are landing on your profile, and hopefully reading all about you and your good-fit qualities for the job(s) you want.

More profile views means more people potentially sending job leads your way, or otherwise helping you with your job search and career.

Besides being a social network , LinkedIn is a search engine.

People use the site to search for particular kinds of people.

Most of LinkedIn’s revenue comes from recruiters, so they constitute the largest group of people using LinkedIn’s search engine.

Who are they searching for? Potential job candidates for the jobs they’re trying to fill.

They search using keywords such as job titles and skills.

To get more views on LinkedIn – and more potential job leads – your profile needs to be highly visible and findable to recruiters and others.

And you need to keep yourself and your personal brand top-of-mind with your expanding network.

How do you do this?

By employing these two strategies:

1. Build content in your profile that includes the right keywords and keyword density, and be ever-mindful of SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Your profile will sit there working PASSIVELY for you – making you more visible and findable, and drawing people to you.

2. ACTIVELY use LinkedIn to stay top-of-mind with people and draw new people to your profile and you.

How do keywords work?

You want to help the right people – executive recruiters, your target employers and others – find you on LinkedIn.

You will draw them to your profile by incorporating into it the right relevant keywords and phrases they search to source candidates like you.

Keywords typically represent your key areas of expertise, or “hard skills”, such as Change Management, Product Development, Emerging Technology Launch, etc.

And your job title is usually an important relevant keyword phrase that people will search .

Strategically placed, the right keywords elevate your search rankings in LinkedIn’s search engine, increasing your profile’s SEO ( Search Engine Optimization ) and significantly boosting your profile views.

Once you fill your LinkedIn profile with SEO-driven content, it will sit there passively, driving people to it when they search keywords looking for people like you.

How to use LinkedIn Resume Builder and Jobs to Find Keywords

If you’re like many job seekers, chances are you haven’t fully built out your LinkedIn profile because you don’t realize how important it is, or you don’t know how to do it.

There are many places and ways to find the right keywords to put in your profile .

LinkedIn, in particular is a goldmine of relevant keywords, based on your job title.

My colleague Virginia Franco wrote about some of the slightly hidden ways to use LinkedIn’s Resume Builder and Jobs to find keywords to boost LinkedIn profile views.

I wholeheartedly agree with her in advising job seekers NOT to use this feature to actually create a resume from their LinkedIn profile .

Your resume and LinkedIn profile differ from each other in a number of ways and are not interchangeable.

Instead, use these 2 LinkedIn features to mine the right keywords to add to your LinkedIn profile, so it will land higher in search results.

Using Resume Builder for keywords

Go to your profile:

  • Click on “More” at the top
  • In the dropdown menu, choose “Build a resume”
  • In the screen that opens, choose “Create from profile”

You’ll see the following image with the “Job title” field, which I’ve filled out with Chief Information Officer.

Click on “Apply” and you’ll see in the image below that several keyword suggestions appear in the righthand sidebar of your profile.

Upgrading to LinkedIn Premium will give you more keywords, so this is one good reason to make use of the Premium 30-day free trial.

And, follow LinkedIn’s cautionary advice:

“We recommend only including these keywords in the context of your experience. Do not list them without qualification, or if you do not actually have this experience.”

Using LinkedIn Jobs for keywords

Virginia also pointed out how you can use LinkedIn Jobs to identify keywords (or skills).

  • Click on “Jobs” in the menu
  • In the search field at the top, type in the job title you’re seeking

I’ve used Chief Information Officer once again here.

You’ll see skills listed in the righthand sidebar, just above the “Easy Apply” button. Click on them to get a list of skills that match your profile.

Build Out Your Profile to PASSIVELY Increase LinkedIn Profile Views

Here’s how to build out your profile, keeping keyword density in mind, so it will work for you passively. These steps alone will help boost your LinkedIn profile views:

1. Optimize your name field

You may not realize that, along with your actual name, you can add a total of 40 characters in the name field for your last name.

The name field and your Profile Headline (#2 below) are the most important places for keyword density, because they sit at the top of the web page.

LinkedIn allows the following additions in the last name field:

  • Suffixes and certifications
  • Former names, maiden names, and nicknames

LinkedIn frowns on adding these things in the last name field:

  • Pseudonyms, fake names, business names, associations, groups, email addresses, or special characters that do not reflect your real or preferred professional name

Here’s an example of an acceptable, keyword-rich name extension:

William Jones, PMP, SOX, CSM, CSSBB

2. Build a keyword-rich Profile Headline

If you haven’t changed the default headline LinkedIn automatically populated for that spot – your current job title – you’re not making the best use of that prime real estate.

This spot is custom-made for SEO and, with the 220 characters and spaces allowed (more with Mobile), you can pack a powerful punch.

Use as many of the allowed characters as you can, while keeping the headline comprehensible.

This is not the place to put phrases like “Open to Network” or “Seeking Opportunities in XYZ”. People are not likely to search these terms and they use up precious space for keywords. Move those to your About section.

Here’s an example of a keyword-rich profile headline:

Chief Data Scientist for the Fortune 500 | Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Product Development, Thought Leadership

And here’s the same job seeker, with his headline ramped up to include some of his personality (or personal brand):

Chief Data Scientist for the Fortune 500 | Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Product Development, Thought Leadership | My mantra for business survival in the technology sphere: Unlearn. Transform. Reinvent.

Avoid the 3 big mistakes that screw up your headline .

3. Personalize your LinkedIn URL

If the URL looks something like this:

linkedin.com/in/meg-guiseppi-2gg73k28

Change it to this, or something similar:

http://www.linkedin.com/in/megguiseppi

Get rid of the mess of numbers and letters at the end. This may not impact your SEO very much, but it’s a good idea to have a clean, searchable name associated with the URL.

4. Pump up your job titles in the Experience section

Along with filling out the narrative part of the Experience section with as much content as possible, you should add keywords to your job titles themselves.

Of course, you must use the same job title on your profile that you’ve used on your resume and elsewhere, to avoid sending up red flags that you’re exaggerating or misrepresenting yourself.

But LinkedIn allows 100 characters in this field, so you can add relevant keywords to each actual job title.

For example, this job seeker’s actual job title at one company is:

Senior Technical & Business Project Manager

But she can add a few choice keywords to improve SEO:

Senior Technical & Business Project Manager – Capital Markets Risk Management, MBS Disclosure

5. Build out the About section

The About section allows for 2,600 characters and spaces. Because it sits very high on the web page, this section is big search engine bait. This is your opportunity to build in plenty of content with relevant keywords.

Another thing about the About section, think of it as a chance to tell your personal brand story . Using your most important keywords and phrases, create a biography around what makes you a good fit for the employers you’re targeting.

But don’t just rely on keywords. You also want to make this, and other narrative sections, an interesting read . Make your About section dazzling . Generate chemistry by giving a feel for your personality and what makes you tick.

6. Fill in the Skills section

Add in your top skills (or areas of expertise) in order of importance. These skills represent your most important keywords and keyword phrases.

According to job search strategist and former recruiter Laura Smith-Proulx , this section:

“Has evolved into an SEO tool that can draw serious traffic, but only if it’s used correctly. The terms you add to Skills factor more heavily in your LinkedIn searchability when you are endorsed for them. Therefore, it makes sense to add keywords and obtain (and accept) endorsements on them. A caveat: ensure the terms you add in this section are really keywords. Given a choice between a “hard skill” (such as “Project Management”) and a character trait (such as “Leadership”), employers may prefer to search for specific competencies.”

And a high number of endorsements for skills representing your best talents supports your personal brand and adds credibility to your candidacy in job search.

7. Complete the rest of your profile

Improve your profile visibility and findability by fully populating any applicable profile sections. The more content in your profile, the more relevant keywords will likely be in your profile, and the more likely your profile will rise to the top of searches on those keywords . . . leading more people to view your profile.

LinkedIn says that users with complete profiles are 40 times more likely to receive opportunities through LinkedIn.

There are a number of LinkedIn profile sections you’re probably neglecting:

  • Volunteer Experience
  • Publications
  • Certifications
  • Honors & Awards
  • Test Scores
  • Organizations

Projects Section

I particularly want to call your attention to this narrative section , a somewhat hidden and little-used gem, where you can add plenty of content.

You’ll need to add a Projects section to your profile itself, before you can make use of it. Access it in the “Add profile section” in the menu at the top of the page, when you’re in “view profile” mode.

Since each Project is tied to a particular job of yours in the Experience section, a project becomes a powerful way to add more content to that job if you’ve used up all the space allowed for each job description in the Experience section. You essentially get double the amount of space for each entry in the Experience section.

You can get creative with Projects. For example, if you worked on a challenging project, write up a description of it with the details. Tell the story of:

  • How it all came about,
  • The situation you walked into,
  • What needed to be done,
  • What wasn’t working,
  • Exactly what you did to fix things, and
  • What the various outcomes were.

As with the About section, as you’re adding in content to this section and making adjustments, pay close attention to what appears to viewers, without having to click on “see more.”

ACTIVELY Draw People in To Boost LinkedIn Profile Views

Now that you’ve fully loaded your profile with content containing the right keywords, and you’ve highlighted your personal brand , LinkedIn will passively draw people to you,

It’s time to get active on the site.

Build a personal brand communications plan to leverage the LinkedIn features that will keep you top-of-mind with your network, and compel new people to view your profile.

8 more ways to boost LinkedIn profile views by ACTIVELY using LinkedIn to stay top-of-mind with your network, and draw people to your profile:

8. keep expanding your linkedin network.

You may be concerned about accepting invitations from people you don’t actually know, or sending invitations to people you don’t know at all, or don’t know well.

Here’s why having a lot of LinkedIn connections is a good thing:

The more people you’re connected with, the wider you’ve cast your net for opportunities, the more people you’re staying top-of-mind with . . . thus the more likely more good-fit opportunities will come your way.

And, the more connections you have, the more people likely to share or like or comment on anything you publish on LinkedIn – updates, posts, Pulse articles, comments, etc. This spreads the word about your personal brand and unique value, potentially leading more people to view your profile.

And, once you reach the 500+ connections mark, your profile ranks higher in search results, making you more visible and findable.

9. Join LinkedIn Groups

Beyond expanding your network, joining relevant Groups can improve your profile SEO. Group names typically include your relevant keywords and phrases. Search engines will pick up those keywords as they crawl your profile .

10. Get more recommendations

Along with a branded, well-written LinkedIn About section (and other sections), recruiters and hiring professionals are attracted to candidates who have persuasive testimonials on their profiles.

If you have no LinkedIn Recommendations , or anemic ones, they may question your good fit . . . or simply not be impressed enough to contact you.

Good recommendations support your personal brand and ROI to the employers you’re targeting. The true measure of your brand to future employers is reflected in what those who know your work the best have to say about you – co-workers, peers, top management, team members, Boards of Directors, vendors, customers, etc.

And LinkedIn experts have suggested that having 10 or more recommendations can boost your profile’s search ranking.

11. Use your LinkedIn profile URL elsewhere in your brand communications

Create inbound links by including your LinkedIn profile URL in these places:

  • Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media accounts
  • Email signature
  • Resume contact information
  • Personal website

12. Share updates on your profile

Sharing or posting updates is a relatively quick and easy way to stay top-of-mind with your network – which should include employees at your target companies and recruiters, along with your various professional contacts.

Get into a routine of posting updates once a week, or at least a few times a month.

Ideas for LinkedIn updates:

  • An online article, blog post, or white paper you’ve published, or one that mentions or quotes you
  • An online article, blog post, or white paper, written by anyone, that is relevant to your niche
  • An event or seminar you’re presenting or attending
  • A new project you’re working on
  • A promotion, transfer, or new assignment
  • A comment you’ve made on a relevant blog that demonstrates your subject matter expertise
  • Professional development, training, or new certification
  • A significant accomplishment or contribution to your company
  • Activities with your networks or LinkedIn Groups
  • An important seminar or event you’ll be attending or have attended
  • A community project you’re working on

13. Publish articles on LinkedIn’s Pulse

Writing articles on LinkedIn’s Pulse publishing platform will draw people to your LinkedIn profile and keep you top-of-mind with your LinkedIn network . Each time you publish a new Pulse post , it lands in your LinkedIn stream where your followers and others will see it.

Similar to running your own blogsite, publishing on Pulse builds your personal brand . . . demonstrating your subject matter expertise and thought leadership, and communicating your personality and good-fit qualities for the employers you’re targeting.

14. Comment on others’ Pulse articles and updates

When you see Pulse articles and updates from your network that are relevant, and of interest to you, write a meaningful comment. Or react in some way.

You can be sure seeing your comment will prompt many people to view your profile. Your thoughtfulness can also lead to more solid connections on LinkedIn , and potential leads.

15. Use hashtags when you comment

Whenever you post an update, publish Pulse articles, or comment on others’ articles, use hashtags .

Hashtags are used to categorize relevant keywords and phrases. They are a way to label themes or topics in social media messages, to categorize them and make messages with these keywords easier to find and follow online.

In other words, hashtags used with keywords make them show up more easily in search. If you post an update or comment using hashtags, people looking for information about those keywords will be more likely to find your messages and view your profile.

Make Your Resume More Skimmable By Leveraging Margins, Spacing, and Fonts Effectively

An eye-tracking study from The Ladders shows that recruiters spend just 7.4 seconds initially reviewing a resume before deciding whether it makes the cut.

As a result, it's critically important that you devote ample time to optimizing your resume's formatting.

When adjusting formatting, you should focus on maximizing skim value.

In our case, skim value simply refers to how easy it is for recruiters to skim your resume and pick up the key information they want to see.

We recommend focusing on three key design features that will improve your document's skim value:

By balancing these three elements, you'll help ensure that recruiters spend more time on your resume and leave them with a positive first impression.

If you find that your content looks cramped or it is spilling over onto a second page, consider widening your margins.

You want your margins to be anywhere between 1/2 inch to 1 inch.

If they're any smaller, your resume may not print out correctly.

If they're any larger, your page may look a bit empty.

To adjust your margins in Microsoft Word,  follow these steps.

When it comes to spacing, keep the following two guidelines in mind:

1) Your spacing between all sections needs to be consistent.

2) You should  incorporate enough spacing to give your document "breathing room," ensuring it's isn't cluttered and difficult to read.

Why You Should Pay Close Attention to Spacing

Simply put, inconsistent spacing looks sloppy.

When recruiters see a document that isn't formatted consistently, it signals a lack of attention to detail.

Given that your resume often serves as your first impression, it's worth taking a few minutes to fix these issues.

How to Adjust Paragraph Spacing in Microsoft Word

To increase or decrease the spacing between each of your sections, adjust the paragraph spacing setting.

In Microsoft Word, click into the paragraph (or last line) that you want to add spacing before/after.

Then,  follow these instructions .  Refer to point #3 under the "change the line spacing in a portion of the document" section.

Once you are happy with the spacing you have for one of your paragraphs, you can quickly "copy and paste" the same formatting onto other paragraphs.

You can utilize the  format painter tool  to do so.

You should consider both your font size and style.

We recommend sticking to fonts between 10 and 12 points in size.

Anything smaller will be difficult to read, making your resume look cramped.

You should also make sure that your font sizes are consistent in each section.

We strongly recommend using a serif font.

Serif fonts have letters that slightly curl, such as those you typically see in books. 

While these fonts can seem a bit old-fashioned compared to sans-serif options such as Arial and Helvetica, studies show that they are easier to read.

A strategic font choice for your resume  can help recruiters pick up the information you want them to see more quickly, given the short time they'll spend initially reading it.

Fonts we recommend for your resume include:

  • Book Antiqua
  • Times New Roman

While the elements we discussed matter, don't underestimate the importance of crafting achievement-based bullet points and tailoring your resume to specific roles.

Your content, when paired with neat formatting, will help differentiate you from other applicants.

Remember that the main purpose of adjusting your margins, spacing, and font is to make your resume looks neat and clutter-free.

You'll need to play around with the proportions of each element to ensure your font size looks well-proportioned in comparison to your spacing, for example.

If you make these adjustments and find that your document still looks cramped, consider condensing your content.

When you have an open role to fill, going to major job boards like Indeed is a logical first step. These websites can help you get your jobs in front of the right people so that you can make a hire. 

In our recent Recruiting Metrics Report , we found that our clients posted 49% more jobs in 2021 over the previous year and with millions of open jobs in the U.S. right now, many business owners are wondering how to increase their visibility on major job boards and make their job postings stand out. 

We collaborated with our resident Indeed expert, Daria Islam, to put together some Indeed posting basics. We’re going to share what you can do to improve your job’s visibility and make the right hires sooner. 

How jobs are posted on Indeed 

There are a few different ways that a job can get posted on Indeed. Of course, employers can post jobs directly on the website. These are called “hosted jobs” and in this instance, all applicants will stay inside of Indeed. 

Additionally, “aggregated jobs” are job postings that are already out in the world that get picked up by Indeed. For these, Indeed works like a search engine, scraping corners of the internet to find them. 

Lastly, third party or “indexed jobs” is when a job posting is sent to Indeed through another source. This is how an ATS like CareerPlug distributes jobs to Indeed.

However your job is posted to Indeed, there are certain guidelines that can ensure it shows up on the feeds of your target job seekers. Let’s go over best practices for Indeed job posting. 

The four basic components of every job posting  

To get accepted by Indeed, every job posting has to have the following four components. These may seem straightforward and obvious, but let’s talk a little bit about how to optimize each of these components to improve your job postings’ visibility. 

1. Description 

When writing your job posting, it’s important to get very detailed in the job description. This helps the right job seekers find your posting. Additionally, a thorough and accurate job description can also save time further down the funnel as it helps applicants determine if the role is right for them earlier in the process. 

Think about what the applicant will be doing and the kind of experience you want them to have. Make sure to build out your qualifications section so that your job posting is targeted towards people that have those qualifications on their resume – the more specific, the better. 

Crafting a great job description is the first step in getting the right people on your team. CareerPlug’s Senior Director of People, Natalie Morgan, shares some of our best practices in this video:

2. Apply method

Your Indeed job posting will also need an application method. One option is “Indeed Apply” which applicants can do without leaving Indeed. This allows job seekers to upload a resume and to send it to employers with just a few clicks. Additionally, you can include an “apply URL,” where the applicant would be redirected to your website or careers page or their application would go to an applicant tracking system like CareerPlug. 

It’s a good idea to include pre-screen questions in your application that help you weed out unqualified candidates, but you’ll want to find the sweet spot where your application isn’t too long. If your application requires people to upload a resume and also re-type that same information into a long application, you’ve already deterred some potential candidates from applying. 

3. Location

All jobs on Indeed must include a city and state, as location is usually a part of a job seeker’s search queries. Indeed recently added an option for remote jobs, but still requires employers to input a physical location as well. For example, CareerPlug is fully remote, but since the company is based out of Austin, we would also include Austin, Texas as a location in job postings. 

This can be a good thing for remote employers as it can actually give you double visibility, meaning you’ll show up on Indeed feeds of job seekers searching for both “remote” and whatever city you’re located in. 

Pro tip: If you are hiring in a small town and not seeing many applicants , consider using the location of the closest, large city. This can help you increase your visibility by showing up in more searches. 

4. Title 

Your job title is incredibly important and should aim to match the words that job seekers are typing into Indeed. Use clear, concise, and straightforward names instead of creative job titles like “coding ninja” or “marketing guru”. 

If you’re not totally sure what to title the position you’re filling, search for similar jobs on Google and see what other companies are titling their jobs. 

Job posting do’s

Here are a few more job posting do’s to get more visibility on job boards like Indeed: 

  • Include compensation . This helps job seekers self-select in or out and is becoming more and more common as pay transparency gains traction. Trust us, it’s a good look! 
  • Highlight benefits. In a job seeker’s market, it’s more important than ever to entice job seekers with the right benefits . Include the standard benefits you offer, and spend some time thinking about the creative benefits your employees receive as well. Birthdays off work? Free lunch every Wednesday? Let job seekers know! 
  • If you’re hiring for multiple roles, make sure to create a posting for each unique position and location. Each job posting needs to be for just one opportunity. (Avoid hiring in “career fair” style or for multiple positions on one job posting.)
  • Keep your posting mobile friendly since nearly 70% of applicants apply from their phones . Limit your posting to three to five prescreen questions and avoid open-ended questions. 

Job posting don’ts 

Now let’s talk about what not to do. The following can hurt your job’s visibility on Indeed and even get your job posting flagged and removed. 

  • Avoid spammy titles. As previously mentioned, your job title should be clear and straightforward. Don’t advertise a sign on bonus in your job title or use phrases like “HIRING URGENTLY”.
  • Don’t use discriminatory language. Avoid gender-specific job titles. For example, use “server” instead of “waitress”. Also avoid anything the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) would see as coded language for discriminatory hiring practices such as “must live within city limits”, “must be currently employed”, “no criminal record”, and “recent graduate”. 
  • Although having a background check in your hiring process is a good idea, don’t include language around background or fingerprint checks in your job description. Indeed will likely flag these postings in order to stay compliant with cities/states that ban criminal-history based job discrimination.
  • Don’t include too large of a pay range. A gap of $30-40,000 can appear to be unrealistic and not truly represent what most people in the role are likely to make. It is best to think about what most people in the role make on average and include an absolute minimum. Try to give job seekers an accurate and realistic salary range.

Organic vs. Sponsored jobs

One obvious method for boosting the visibility of your jobs: pay to sponsor them. Organic jobs are posted for free. These jobs are placed based on keyword relevancy, then by chronological order. Because of this, they fall further down the search results as they age. 

Sponsored jobs are paid to post, based on a daily or monthly budget, and Indeed gives them “premium placement” in search results. This gives job postings additional and longer visibility, which can be a great choice if you need to fill a role urgently or are having trouble finding applicants. 

Diversify your applicant sources beyond the job boards

It may surprise you to learn that although major job boards produce the highest quantity of applicants, they actually only account for less than half of hires overall.

According to our research, some of the best sources of hires are employee referrals and custom or niche sources . While doing all of the things we discussed above will help your job postings get more visibility, make sure you’re not solely relying on job boards to fill your open roles.

How do you create a thumbnail that stands out to YouTube users ?

BOGY Thumbnails.

BOGY Thumbnails are thumbnails that use these four colors:

Why is this important?

Well, if you look around YouTube, you’ll notice that the site is mostly red, black and white.

And if your thumbnail also uses red, black and white… your video will blend in.

But when you use BOGY thumbnails, your videos stand out and grab attention.

Use non-YouTube colors to stand out

(Which makes people MUCH more likely to click.)

For example, I use a lot of green (along with other non-YouTube colors) in my thumbnails:

This is partly for branding reasons (green is the main color for my blog and YouTube channel).

But it’s also to help my videos stand out on the YouTube platform:

How about another example?

5-Minute Crafts (which has over 74 million subscribers) uses lots of blue and yellow in most of their thumbnails:

Of course, you can use a little bit of red, white and black in your thumbnail.

You just don’t want to make them your main thumbnail color.

For example, I use some black and white in this thumbnail.

2. Copy This Proven Video Description Template

YouTube has confirmed that your video descriptions “let YouTube’s algorithms know what your videos are all about”.

With that, I have some good news:

I recently developed a YouTube description template that works GREAT.

Here it is:

Now I’ll break down each section in detail.

First, you have the Strong Intro.

The first few lines of your description are SUPER important.

Specifically, you want to include your target keyword once in the first 1-2 sentences.

That’s because YouTube puts more weight on keywords early on in your description.

Include target keyword in first 2-3 sentences of description

So make sure to mention your target keyword at the beginning of your description.

Here’s an example from my channel:

You also want to sell your video.

The first few lines of your description show up in YouTube search:

And if that snippet is super compelling, more people will click on your result:

A compelling description increases click through rate

Plus, some people even read your description after they land on your video page.

So it’s important that the content above “Show more” really sells your video.

Next , you have the 150-word outline.

All you need to do here is outline what someone will learn from your video.

Don’t be afraid to get into the nitty-gritty details here. In fact, I recommend writing AT LEAST 150 words.

And make sure to use keywords that you want your video to rank for.

That way, YouTube can fully understand your video content.

For example, check out this description from one of my videos:

It’s 233 total words.

And that thorough description has helped my video rack up 496,297 views to date:

Finally , you have your description links.

I actually got this tip from YouTube themselves:

The goal here is to send people to your website and social media channels.

I’m most active on Twitter, so I only include a link to my Twitter profile:

But there’s nothing wrong with linking to several different sites that you’re active on.

This leads us to…

3. Boost Your Video Title CTR

Your title is a BIG part of your video’s success.

In fact, YouTube’s internal data has confirmed that your title can make or break your entire video :

With that, here’s exactly how to write video titles that get tons of clicks:

First, add brackets and parentheses to the end of your title.

An industry study by HubSpot found that adding brackets to a title increased clicks by 33% :

To be fair:

This study looked at blog post titles.

But I’ve found that the same rule applies to YouTube videos.

For example, this video from my channel has 496,297 views:

And the “[New Checklist]” at the end of my title is a big part of that video’s success:

Next, use a number in your title.

This number can be:

  • The number of tips or strategies you’re going to cover
  • The current year
  • Number of steps in a how-to video
  • The amount of weight someone lost (or lifted)

Or pretty much any number that makes sense for your video.

For example, here’s a video on my channel about keyword research :

My original title was just “Advanced Keyword Research Tutorial”.

That title is pretty flat.

So I decided to add “5-Step Blueprint” to the end of my title:

This has helped that video rack up over 289k views so far:

Finally, use titles that are between 40-50 characters:

A study by Justin Briggs discovered that videos with titles fewer than 50 characters ranked best in YouTube search :

4. Get More “Suggested Video” Views

Over the last few years I’ve studied dozens of YouTube channels.

And I’ve noticed one consistent pattern:

Successful channels get lots of views from Suggested Video.

As a reminder, “Suggested Videos” are related videos that YouTube promotes next to the video you’re watching:

And as it turns out, Suggested Video can bring in MORE views than YouTube search.

For example, my channel gets 34.8% of its views from SEO…

How can you get more views from Suggested Video?

Use the same tags as your competitors.

In fact, YouTube has stated that they use your video content metadata (like your title, description and tags) for Suggested Video rankings.

So when your tags match the tags in a popular video, you have a good chance of showing up next to that video:

5. Use The “MVC Formula” For Video Tags

You already know that tags are important for video SEO .

That’s because YouTube uses tags to understand your video’s topic.

In fact, when we analyzed 1+ million YouTube videos , we found that YouTube video tags correlated with rankings:

How do you use tags the right way?

The MVC Formula.

Here’s how it looks:

The MVC stands for “Main Keyword”, “Variations” and “Category”.

I’ll break this down with a real-life example…

First, you have “Main Keyword”.

This is self-explanatory.

You want to use your main keyword as your first or second tag.

For example, my target keyword for this video is: “link building”.

So I made that exact phrase my first tag:

Next, we’ve got “Variations”.

Here’s where you sprinkle in a few variations of your main keyword.

For example, in my link building video, I used a few variations of that term:

Finally, include 1-2 tags that describe your video’s overall category.

These broad keywords are designed to help YouTube understand your video’s overall topic and category.

For example, in my video, I included three broad tags: “SEO”, “online marketing” and “digital marketing”.

6. Share Videos On Quora, Reddit and Forums

Online communities are GREAT places to promote your YouTube videos .

That’s because people in these communities have burning questions…

…questions that your video can answer.

For example, let’s say that you see someone asking this question on Reddit:

Well, if you had a video that talked about frozen Paleo meals, you could link to it in that thread.

In fact, I used this exact approach to promote one of my videos on Quora:

Which helped my brand new video get a handful of high-quality views.

7. Rank Your Videos in Google Search

Ranking your videos in Google can lead to LOTS of extra views.

In fact, Google sends my channel 8,396 views per month:

How do you get your videos to show up on Google?

Well, it’s not all about ranking #1 on YouTube.

In fact, a study by Stone Temple Consulting found that 55.2% of YouTube videos ranking in Google were different than the top videos ranking in YouTube’s search results.

For example, if you search for “advanced knitting tips” on YouTube, these videos are shown at the top:

But when you search for that same keyword in Google, two out of three videos are nowhere to be found:

With that, here’s how to boost your video’s chances of ranking in Google:

First , say your keyword out loud in your video.

For example, some time ago I published this video on my channel:

And I made sure to actually say the exact phrase “rank #1 in Google” five times in that video:

Second , upload a transcript (closed captions) of your video to YouTube.

That way, Google can understand 100% of the content in your video.

Sure enough, I made sure to get a professional transcription for my SEO tutorial video.

8. Optimize Videos for Comments, Likes and Subscribes

When it comes to the YouTube algorithm, the number of views your video has is important.

But they also want to see that people ENGAGE with your video.

In fact, I conducted a YouTube search engine ranking factors study :

And we found a significant correlation between ranking in YouTube and user engagement.

Specifically, we found that comments:

All correlated with rankings in YouTube search.

What’s the best way to get more engagement on your videos?

It’s simple: ask people to engage with your video.

For example, let’s look at this video from my channel:

At the end of my video I ask people to leave a comment:

Which has helped that video rack up 7,749 comments:

And over 765,000 total views:

9. Improve Your Channel’s “Session Time”

Audience retention ? Important.

Watch Time ? VERY important.

But neither of these two metrics are as important as Session Time .

I’ll explain…

Session Time (also known as “Session Watch Time”) is the total amount of time someone spends on YouTube after watching your video.

Session time

And it’s one metric that YouTube cares A LOT about. In fact, YouTube has said :

“The goals of YouTube’s search and discovery system are twofold: to help viewers find the videos they want to watch, and to maximize long-term viewer engagement …”

So if someone watches your video and then leaves YouTube, that’s going to hurt your channel’s Session Time:

If viewer leaves YouTube after watching, session time decreases

But if that person stays on YouTube, your Session Time is going to increase:

If viewer stays on YouTube, session time will increase

And the best way to improve your Session Time?

Promote your BEST videos on your channel page.

That way, you’re showing people videos that will keep them watching.

For example, I show off my best videos at the top of my channel page (inside of playlists):

As it turns out, there’s another easy way to boost your Session Time.

10. Optimize Your End Screen for Views

Here’s how to get more views on YouTube using your end screen :

First , pick a popular video from your channel.

To do this, head over to the YouTube Studio and find a video that generated lots of views over the last 90 days:

Next , find a video from your channel that someone would want to watch AFTER they finish watching your popular video. And feature that content at the end of your video.

For example, this video was one of my top 10 videos over the last 90 days:

So I asked myself:

“What does someone that just learned about keyword research want to learn about next?”

How to use those keywords in their content.

Luckily, I published a video on that exact topic a few months earlier:

Finally, link to that video on your End Screen:

And because your “Next Video” is EXACTLY what someone wants to see, they’re super likely to watch it.

11. Master YouTube SEO Fundamentals

If you want to get more views on YouTube, you need to learn as much as you can about YouTube SEO .

Specifically, you want to master SEO basics like:

  • Keyword research for videos
  • Optimizing titles, descriptions and tags
  • Improving Audience Retention and Watch Time
  • YouTube engagement signals
  • YouTube keyword analytics

12. Use Eye-Catching Playlist Titles

I used to name my playlists with whatever word popped into my head first.

For example, one of my first playlists was called “Advanced SEO Strategies”:

Not a horrible name. But not super compelling either.

So I added “and Case Studies” to make the title more interesting:

And I’ve applied this same rule to all of my playlist titles.

For example, one of my most popular playlists is called “How to Get Higher Google Rankings”:

My original title for that playlist was: “SEO Tips and Strategies”.

But I knew that my audience wants to learn “how to get higher Google rankings”.

So I made my playlist title that exact outcome.

13. Feature Your Videos On Your Blog

You might have noticed that I’ve embedded quite a few of my YouTube videos in this post.

And there’s a good reason for that:

These embedded videos lead to a ton of high-quality YouTube views.

Not only do these embeds help you get more views, but they can also help your videos rank higher in YouTube’s search results.

An industry study found that top ranking YouTube videos have 78% more links and embeds than videos that rank #2 or below:

Pretty cool.

14. Share Video Clips On Social Media

Back in the day I’d share my entire YouTube video on social media:

And sure, this led to a handful of video views.

But not as many as I wanted.

That’s when I realized something:

Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites want to keep people on their platforms.

(Yup, just like YouTube.)

And when you post a link to your YouTube video, their algorithms are going to hide your post from your followers.

What’s the solution?

Upload a clip from your YouTube video as native video.

Here’s an example:

Because my clip was native to Facebook, it was promoted around the platform like crazy.

Which led to over 23k views on my Facebook post:

And once you post the clip, link to the full video as the first comment:

That way, people that enjoyed your clip can easily find the full video on YouTube.

15. Upload Videos When Your Audience is On YouTube

What’s the best time to upload a video on YouTube?

Is it Tuesday at 3pm?

How about Saturday at 6am?

The real answer: when your subscribers are on YouTube.

Unfortunately, YouTube doesn’t tell you when most of your subscribers are online.

So I recommend testing a few different days and times to see what works best for your channel.

You can even use a tool like VidIQ to analyze your channel for the best times to post:

16. “The Card Bridge” Technique

This is an easy way to boost your Session Time and YouTube views.

Here’s how it works:

First, look at the audience retention report for one of your videos.

As you can see, this video has a massive retention drop at 6:16.

Next, have a card appear at that time.

(That’s “The Bridge”.)

And that card sends people to another video on your channel at the exact moment they would have clicked away:

17. Get Featured On The YouTube Homepage

The YouTube homepage can be a GREAT source of views.

(Especially for new videos.)

For example, look at the traffic sources to this video the week after it went live:

39.4% of all of my views came from “Browse Features”.

(Most of which are views from the YouTube homepage.)

And getting on the homepage led to 3,097 views in my video’s first week.

As you probably know, your YouTube homepage is highly personalized.

So when I say “get featured on the homepage”, I’m talking about getting on the homepage for users that are signed in.

With that, here are two ways to boost the odds that your video will appear on people’s homepages:

First , promote your video in the first 48 hours after it goes live.

YouTube’s homepage algorithm tends to feature videos that have two things going for them:

  • They’re new
  • They’re popular

And when you get lots of eyeballs on your new video, YouTube will happily feature it on their homepage.

For example, I promote my new videos on social media:

And to our newsletter subscribers:

Email notification

Which pushes lots of people to my brand new content on day 1:

Second , boost your total YouTube subscriber count.

I’ve noticed that YouTube’s homepage tends to feature content from channels that you’re already subscribed to.

(Which makes sense.)

So the more subscribers you have, the more views you’ll get from the homepage.

Bonus #1: Double Down On What Works

In other words:

  • Find videos from your channel with above-average audience retention.
  • Use what worked in future videos.

How about an example?

This video from my channel was my first successful video:

(Most of my other early videos completely flopped.)

So I decided to apply what worked in this video to my future videos.

And it worked!

Because I doubled down on what was already working, I was able to grow my channel in record time:

Specifically, I looked for spots in my video where my audience retention was higher than average:

And did more of what was already working.

For example, I noticed a big retention spike at 3:51:

This is an easy way to get your subscribers PUMPED about your next video.

Here’s how to do it:

Or anything that builds anticipation for your video:

Either way, your community post makes people look forward to your upcoming video.

(Which means they’ll be MUCH more likely to watch it when it goes live.)

Hey Giovanni, good question. There are two reasons for this:

1. Having a link in your description (especially early on) can hurt your click-through-rate. It makes your video much less enticing to click on 2. There’s usually no need because, if people like your videos, they’ll find your site anyway. At least that’s been my experience.

Great info here as usual. We just started posting to our company YouTube channel and your first tip on BOGY thumbnails is going to help us brand our channel and get more views from the beginning. It will take some time to implement all of your suggestions but thanks so much for this actionable advice.

Using the 80/20 rule of what gets your video an insane amount of views, I would have to think it comes down to:

View through percentage, session time, CTR, and channel popularity.

Everything else are just tweaks in comparison.

I have also 2 YouTube Channels, Its 7 years old and i am not uploaded any video from past 2 years but both channels are have up to 1M views co’z all videos Thumbnails and description details all is so optimized. I Always use in Thumbnails Yellow background and Black, bold Fonts.

Great content as always! I’ve followed you for awhile, so I do many of these things already. 🙂 🙂 Something I’m noticing that’s interesting is that certain niches are easier than others to rank in on YouTube (I’m in a few niches–some, I have next to no views or subscribers and some, I just kill it in… at least comparatively, hahahaha.)

But per bonus tip #1, I am wondering if you have a small or non-existant list or social media following, what would you recommend to boost views on day one? Would you ever consider buying links or views to inflate this or would you recommend just slowly building that list and social media presence? It seems like if either a social media platform or an email list has less than a few hundred to a thousand subscribers, there’s not really that much push that can happen from it. I know it’s of course niche and audience dependent (some people can kill it with a hundred subscribers and some people starve with thousands of them), but list building is something I struggle with…

Thanks Lucath. Yup that’s true: there are certain niches that are less competitive than others. For example, gaming is insanely competitive (which would surprise a lot of people).

To your question, I personally wouldn’t recommend buying views. To me, it’s not worth the risk. So even though your list and social media accounts may not have a lot of people yet, it’s better than nothing. So I would use them as they build up.

It is all about good content, if you have something good and interesting to talk about then people will watch it. Good content + Brian’s strategy = Winner

Hello Brian, great post! When you place the link of your video in the comments of the social networks, is it better to send them to YouTube directly or to your blog with the embedded video?

Good question, Ander. In my opinion, you DEFINITELY want to send people directly to YouTube.

If you send someone to your site, you get traffic to your site. Which is nice.

But your video won’t get engagement signals (like views, likes and subscribes) that YouTube pays close attention to. So I highly recommend sending people straight to YouTube.

Hi Chefoo, nice! Good question, in my experience it doesn’t help. The link is nofollow. Plus, YouTube knows that links in YT descriptions aren’t “editorial” links. That said, they don’t hurt.

Hi Brian! Love your tips! Just wanted to leave feedback on tip 15: adding your full video link to social media comments. I did this for a while. A upload a snippet of my full video on FB and then used to put the link as a 1st comment.

But I noticed a problem with this strategy. When people shared the video on their fb feed, the original comments get deleted so that meant that when people shared my video post, they lost the link to the full video. So people ended up watching a small snippet video and had no link to click through to the full video.

So I had to revert back to embedding the link into the actual post that went with the video.

Hey Christina, yeah I noticed that too. Kind of a pain. In my experience, the extra reach on the original post is worth it. Then again, I’m in B2B so I don’t get a ton of reshares on my posts (people usually don’t want to share SEO videos with their friends!).

WOW THIS IS AN AWESOME ARTICLE. Thank you! I have a check list of 20some things I try to do for each video this is going to make it sooo much better. QUESTION….in terms of thumbnails…i do whiteboard animations in this case would it be ok to use white as background, black for the cartoon and ONE either blue orange yellow or green as accent color? Could I change which of the 4 I use for each thumbnail? This is probably a dumb questio. But I have changed my thumbnails 4 times in my short 5 month youtube career. I spend 50 plus hours on each video so I can only post 1 every 3 wks.

Thanks Betsy. That’s a really good question, actually. You can still use a white background. But I’d use green, yellow, blue or another on-YouTube color too. That way, your thumbnails still have the whiteboard look and also stand out.

In some future content, I’d love to see your write about hosting videos embedded on your website with YouTube vs with something like Wistia … we’re doing well on YouTube but continuing to host video on our website with Wistia because 1) it seems like the UX is better, 2) End of video experience is better, 3) I read somewhere long ago that it’s better for website SEO to host w/Wistia not YouTube

Hey Paul, good question there. When it comes to videos that you only want website visitors to see, Wistia is a great option. But for most other videos, I prefer to embed YouTube videos. That way, people find out that you have a YouTube channel. And it helps increase the reach of that video on YouTube. So yeah, it kind of depends on how important YouTube is as a platform vs. videos on your own site.

Then there’s Manley , a Senior Technology Program Manager, who landed his most recent role using LinkedIn without applying to a job posting. How to Increase Your LinkedIn Profile Views and Interview Invites in Only 15 Minutes A Day

How to increase your LinkedIn profile views so you get more interview invites

I often hear from job seekers that they use LinkedIn randomly (as a resume placeholder) and don’t have a sense of how to get more leverage out of LinkedIn. If that’s you, you’re not alone. That’s where Karen, Manley, and my husband started with their LinkedIn journeys. I suspect that you might be there, too. 

Karen’s LinkedIn profile housed her resume, and she would apply to job postings that interested her as she saw them. But as far as using LinkedIn beyond that, she wasn’t sure what else she could be doing, and she wasn’t engaging — just scrolling. She told me, “ I occasionally read posts, but I didn’t engage with them. And I was too intimidated to comment!”

Avoiding engagement can really hamper your job search results because the true power of LinkedIn comes from being active on the platform. 

If you want to be seen by recruiters and appeal to them, you must speak up, make the first move, and be visible. To do this, you need to comment , like , share , and join the conversations that are happening across LinkedIn.

First, log into your LinkedIn homepage to view what your network is posting about. You’ll notice that you will see posts from first-degree connections, pages you follow, companies you follow, advertisements, and posts that your network has commented on. 

Each of these provides an excellent opportunity for you to increase your visibility. 

When you comment on a connection’s post, all of their connections, plus their second-degree connections, can see your comment. So you’ve just doubled your exposure outside of your own network.

After taking my LinkedIn Unlocked course and learning how to engage with her network through strategic commenting, Karen said, “ I had several interviews come from comments that I had left on posts! In fact, not one of my interviews came from a job posting. The more active you are, the more likely you are to connect with recruiters!”

How to get started actively engaging on LinkedIn to increase interview invites

A simple yet effective way to start engaging is to share your experience, insight, or opinion on your connection’s post. You could also share your story in relation to the post. 

For instance, I posted a poll about a question I received from job seekers. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/jessicaholbrook_linkedintopvoices-careers-jobsearch-activity-6890303822397591552-qMCz

You can see that Bernadette and Robbie share their opinions and expert advice while Stephanie shares a personal story. It doesn’t take more than a minute or two to comment, and now their comments and profiles are visible to everyone in my network (30,000 connections and 140,000+ followers), plus anyone who commented on the post. 

I recommend commenting on 3–5 posts per day. It will take you less than 15 minutes. If you can’t engage daily for 15 minutes, try a minimum of three days per week.

But don’t limit your conversations to just connections. You want to expand and build a stronger network. 

Search for industry insiders, thought leaders, and influencers in your industry, as well as companies that you can engage with and comment on. Each time you engage with a post, you increase your visibility exponentially. I’ve received countless connection requests from people who’ve read my comments on other people’s posts, agreed with or liked what I said, and wanted to connect.

Engaging with recruiters and hiring managers leads to interview invites

One of my favorite strategies for effective engagement on LinkedIn is to locate the hiring manager, recruiter, decision-maker, and a couple of employees for a target company. This strategy works best for your top 1–3 target companies. It’s not scalable for a list of 50 companies. 

Once you’ve identified who they are ( LinkedIn Unlocked students: this is the module on researching people), check to see if they’re active on LinkedIn. By active, I mean either posting themselves or commenting on other people’s posts at least once a week. 

You can check their activity by heading to their LinkedIn profile and looking at the activity section. It looks like this:

How to find active LinkedIn users to increase profile views and interview invitations

Once you’ve identified your active employees and HR folks, you want to start engaging with what they write. For example, if I’m a digital marketer who wants to work at a marketing agency, and I see that their talent acquisition person shared an opening on her LinkedIn page, I would head over and like that post and leave a comment. I could share my interest if it’s a role I’m interested in. Or, if it’s not a digital marketing role, I could share it with someone I know who may be interested. 

You want to increase your familiarity with your target audience by consistently showing up in their feed through comments, shares, and likes. Each time you comment on a post, the person sees it, and they see your name. Each time you like one of their posts, they see your name. Each time you share their post, they see your name. Each interaction builds familiarity. Familiarity builds the know-like-trust factor. 

Commenting on company posts

When you comment on a company page, the company can see it, as well as recruiters who are looking for candidates. They can see that you’ve engaged with their brand. The more you comment, like, and share their company and sponsored posts, the higher your engagement and the higher you’re rated as likely to respond if a recruiter reaches out to you. 

In fact, commenting on a company post spotlights your profile to recruiters. So, when you apply to a job at that company, there is a spotlight on your profile and application that says engaged with brand. This alerts the employer that you’re more likely to respond to them if they reach out to you about an opening. It’s another great way to stand out to hiring managers and get interview invites from LinkedIn. 

Consistency is the key that unlocks the door to interview invites

Engagement works best when you’re consistent. It’s hard to build a know-like-trust factor if you’re only showing up sporadically. That’s why I teach job seekers my 3×3 framework. 

3 comments per day, at least 3 days per week. It’s doable and a great place to start to keep yourself accountable and consistent. 

If you can do more than three comments three days a week, I strongly recommend doing so. The more time you invest engaging on LinkedIn, the quicker the interview invitations will pour in. Karen, Manley, and Scott (another LinkedIn Unlocked student) invested about an hour daily posting and engaging on LinkedIn at the height of their job search. Scott’s network has grown 10x its size since he learned the strategies I teach in LinkedIn Unlocked, and Karen landed two jobs and several interview invites. 

Manley shared this about his results: “ The results seemed subtle at first but, in retrospect, they were pretty dramatic. I had always made connections, but they weren’t always the connections I wanted. After the course, I was getting more interest from the companies and people that I was interested in. My time spent on LinkedIn became far more productive. I was spending the same amount of time, but I was using it more effectively. ”

The more active you are, the quicker and greater results you’ll see from your efforts. 

Fight the notion that these efforts to engage by commenting and posting aren’t as productive as applying to job postings. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we’re being productive in our search when we click Easy Apply because we can quantify how many roles we’ve applied to. Instead, I challenge you to think of productivity as how much time you invested into actively engaging on LinkedIn.

What to post on LinkedIn as a job seeker

This is where you take your job search to a whole new level. Yes, you can get interview invites from commenting and engaging with other people’s posts, but if you really want to show off your expertise and position yourself as a subject matter expert, then posting on LinkedIn can do just that. 

When I speak with people about transitioning from passive scrolling to actively contributing, I most often hear:

  • What do I post? 
  • How do I share authentic content?
  • I’m not confident enough to share.
  • How do I structure a post?
  • How do I get people to engage with my post?

First, let’s address the “what to post on LinkedIn” question.

LinkedIn is a professional networking site, so you want to keep your posts professional. Here are some ideas of things you can share:

  • A recent award or recognition you received.
  • A publication or project you completed.
  • An accomplishment (humble brag).
  • Kudos to someone else.
  • Industry news.
  • Share an industry article and summarize it.
  • Share an article and provide your rebuttal or feedback.
  • State a problem common to the industry or your position, and offer tips to solve it. 
  • Talk about a challenge you’ve faced at work, how you addressed it, and the outcome.
  • Ask for feedback. 
  • Share a challenge and ask for advice.
  • Give advice.
  • Share a story. “Someone recently asked me…Here’s what I shared”
  • Appreciate.
  • Acknowledge.
  • Share job openings.
  • Share company posts/status updates/job openings.
  • Share a recruiter’s post.

When it comes to sharing authentic content, I can give you one piece of advice: Be true to yourself and your brand. I’m an educator at heart. It’s my nature to share knowledge and information; it comes easily. I’m not an Adam Karpiak who can bust out jokes or make hilarious, irreverent, witty posts that crack people up. I wish I could come up with stuff like that, but I’m just not that funny. I’m a teacher, so I teach. Stay true to who you are, your personality, and your style when you post to LinkedIn.  

I’ve never been one to chase the algorithm. Someone is trying to go viral if you see the same post repeatedly. Going viral shouldn’t be your goal with content. Content should be about your brand and how to add value and serve others. 

If you keep this at the forefront of your mind, your followership will grow over time. Very few people hit the viral jackpot and instantly jump up thousands of followers. I’m not here to tell you how to have one viral hit to get massive exposure. It might happen or it might not, but what you can control is your personal brand and the content you produce and share. It’s taken me 10 years to reach 140,000 followers (which came through consistent effort), but those 140,000 followers are loyal and engaged. 

LinkedIn’s Chief Economist Karen Kimbrough said on 60 Minutes that someone is hired every 15 seconds on LinkedIn. That was in 2022. Now LinkedIn reports that 8 people are hired every minute! The number has doubled in less than a year. That stat does not only reflect applications on job postings. It reflects all interactions on LinkedIn. The opportunity to find your next role is there — you just need to know how to use LinkedIn effectively.

FACT SHEET: President   Biden Announces New Actions to Secure the   Border

New actions will bar migrants who cross our Southern border unlawfully from receiving asylum Biden taking action as Congressional Republicans put partisan politics ahead of national security, twice voting against toughest reforms in decades

Since his first day in office, President Biden has called on Congress to secure our border and address our broken immigration system. Over the past three years, while Congress has failed to act, the President has acted to secure our border. His Administration has deployed the most agents and officers ever to address the situation at the Southern border, seized record levels of illicit fentanyl at our ports of entry, and brought together world leaders on a framework to deal with changing migration patterns that are impacting the entire Western Hemisphere.  Earlier this year, the President and his team reached a historic bipartisan agreement with Senate Democrats and Republicans to deliver the most consequential reforms of America’s immigration laws in decades. This agreement would have added critical border and immigration personnel, invested in technology to catch illegal fentanyl, delivered sweeping reforms to the asylum system, and provided emergency authority for the President to shut down the border when the system is overwhelmed. But Republicans in Congress chose to put partisan politics ahead of our national security, twice voting against the toughest and fairest set of reforms in decades. President Biden believes we must secure our border. That is why today, he announced executive actions to bar migrants who cross our Southern border unlawfully from receiving asylum. These actions will be in effect when high levels of encounters at the Southern Border exceed our ability to deliver timely consequences, as is the case today. They will make it easier for immigration officers to remove those without a lawful basis to remain and reduce the burden on our Border Patrol agents. But we must be clear: this cannot achieve the same results as Congressional action, and it does not provide the critical personnel and funding needed to further secure our Southern border. Congress still must act. The Biden-Harris Administration’s executive actions will:   Bar Migrants Who Cross the Southern Border Unlawfully From Receiving Asylum

  • President Biden issued a proclamation under Immigration and Nationality Act sections 212(f) and 215(a) suspending entry of noncitizens who cross the Southern border into the United States unlawfully. This proclamation is accompanied by an interim final rule from the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security that restricts asylum for those noncitizens.
  • These actions will be in effect when the Southern border is overwhelmed, and they will make it easier for immigration officers to quickly remove individuals who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States.
  • These actions are not permanent. They will be discontinued when the number of migrants who cross the border between ports of entry is low enough for America’s system to safely and effectively manage border operations. These actions also include similar humanitarian exceptions to those included in the bipartisan border agreement announced in the Senate, including those for unaccompanied children and victims of trafficking.

Recent Actions to secure our border and address our broken immigration system: Strengthening the Asylum Screening Process

  • The Department of Homeland Security published a proposed rule to ensure that migrants who pose a public safety or national security risk are removed as quickly in the process as possible rather than remaining in prolonged, costly detention prior to removal. This proposed rule will enhance security and deliver more timely consequences for those who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States.

Announced new actions to more quickly resolve immigration cases

  • The Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security launched a Recent Arrivals docket to more quickly resolve a portion of immigration cases for migrants who attempt to cross between ports of entry at the Southern border in violation of our immigration laws.
  • Through this process, the Department of Justice will be able to hear these cases more quickly and the Department of Homeland Security will be able to more quickly remove individuals who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States and grant protection to those with valid claims.
  • The bipartisan border agreement would have created and supported an even more efficient framework for issuing final decisions to all asylum seekers. This new process to reform our overwhelmed immigration system can only be created and funded by Congress.

Revoked visas of CEOs and government officials who profit from migrants coming to the U.S. unlawfully

  • The Department of State imposed visa restrictions on executives of several Colombian transportation companies who profit from smuggling migrants by sea. This action cracks down on companies that help facilitate unlawful entry into the United States, and sends a clear message that no one should profit from the exploitation of vulnerable migrants.
  • The State Department also imposed visa restrictions on over 250 members of the Nicaraguan government, non-governmental actors, and their immediate family members for their roles in supporting the Ortega-Murillo regime, which is selling transit visas to migrants from within and beyond the Western Hemisphere who ultimately make their way to the Southern border.
  • Previously, the State Department revoked visas of executives of charter airlines for similar actions.

Expanded Efforts to Dismantle Human Smuggling and Support Immigration Prosecutions

  • The Departments of State and Justice launched an “Anti-Smuggling Rewards” initiative designed to dismantle the leadership of human smuggling organizations that bring migrants through Central America and across the Southern U.S. border. The initiative will offer financial rewards for information leading to the identification, location, arrest, or conviction of those most responsible for significant human smuggling activities in the region.
  • The Department of Justice will seek new and increased penalties against human smugglers to properly account for the severity of their criminal conduct and the human misery that it causes.
  • The Department of Justice is also partnering with the Department of Homeland Security to direct additional prosecutors and support staff to increase immigration-related prosecutions in crucial border U.S. Attorney’s Offices. Efforts include deploying additional DHS Special Assistant United States Attorneys to different U.S. Attorneys’ offices, assigning support staff to critical U.S. Attorneys’ offices, including DOJ Attorneys to serve details in U.S. Attorneys’ Offices in several border districts, and partnering with federal agencies to identify additional resources to target these crimes.

Enhancing Immigration Enforcement

  • The Department of Homeland Security has surged agents to the Southern border and is referring a record number of people into expedited removal.
  • The Department of Homeland Security is operating more repatriation flights per week than ever before. Over the past year, DHS has removed or returned more than 750,000 people, more than in every fiscal year since 2010.

Seizing Fentanyl at our Border

The Number of U.S. Homes for Sale Is Slowly Returning to Normal: An ‘Incredible Trend,’ Economists Say

Homebuyers willing to brave today’s high mortgage rates might at least be delighted to find that they have plenty of homes to consider.

In the latest monthly housing report from Realtor.com® , the overall number of homes for sale in May marks seven months of growth.

“The biggest eye-catcher for me is the fact that inventory is rising sharply,” says Realtor.com senior economist Ralph McLaughlin . “There are 35.2% more homes on the market than this time last year, an incredible trend in the direction of normality.”

“While the housing market is still in the seller’s territory , it is expected to shift in a buyer-friendly direction as mortgage rates resume their decline over the next year and the number of homes for sale increases,” says Realtor.com economic data manager Sabrina Speianu .

Home prices rose seasonally

As is typical in the housing market’s warmer months, the national median list price continued to increase seasonally by 0.3% to $442,500 in May, compared with $430,000 in April. (Last year’s May median list price was $441,000.)

Moderately steady home prices are due to a rising number of affordable homes hitting the market.

“The inventory of lower-priced homes is rising faster than other segments,” says McLaughlin. “There are 46.6% more homes on the market in the $200,000 to $350,000 range, something inventory and price-constrained buyers will surely welcome.”

In addition to the list price, buyers and sellers might want to examine the median list price per square foot, which rose by 52.7% this May compared with May 2019.

“The price-per-square-foot metric is an important one to pay attention to because the change in that metric is a more solid measure of how much more a home is worth over time than looking at changes in median list price,” says McLaughlin.

And here’s more good news for sellers who bought before the COVID-19 pandemic: Namely, the typical listed home price this May grew by a whopping 37.5% compared with May 2019.

How high mortgage rates have hit housing

Although listing levels are rising overall, high mortgage rates have kept some sellers on the sidelines.

This May saw 6.2% more fresh homes for sale than this same month last year. But that’s almost half of April’s new listings levels, which saw a 12.2% growth rate.

“Sellers—who are often buyers themselves—responded to rising mortgage rates with some caution,” says Speianu. “The growth in newly listed homes dipped, although newly listed homes still remained higher than the previous year.”

And if mortgage rates drop later on as anticipated, more sellers are bound to jump into the market.

“We expect selling activity to normalize as rates inch their way down over the next year,” says Speianu.

Listings levels are up overall in the biggest U.S. cities

In May, all four regions of the U.S. saw active housing stock grow over the previous year.

The South continues to lead as the region with the most listing growth year over year, hitting 47.2% in May.

The West saw a 34.5% growth in the number of homes for sale, while the Midwest saw a 20.5% increase. The Northwest was far behind the rest of the country, with growth coming in at 9.4%.

The number of homes for sale also increased in all of the 50 largest metros compared with last year.

The metros with the most growth in homes on the market were Tampa, FL (+87.4%), Phoenix (+80.3%), and Orlando, FL (+78.0%).

“These markets were booming during the [COVID-19] pandemic frenzy, and homebuyers couldn’t get enough inventory during those years,” says McLaughlin. “But the growth in inventory now suggests those markets are normalizing as the pendulum swings back in the opposite direction.”

Only 12 of the 50 largest metro areas saw higher inventory levels in May compared with typical 2017 to 2019 levels. However, it’s important to note that this figure is up from only seven metros last month.

The top metros with housing stock above pre-pandemic levels were mostly in the South and West and included Austin, TX (+33.6%), San Antonio, TX (+31.8%), and Denver  (+22.0%).

While listings levels this May are much improved compared with the previous three years, “it is still down 34.2% compared with typical 2017 to 2019 levels,” explains Speianu.

Homes continue to sell quickly

The typical home spent 44 days on the market this May, which is one day extra compared with last year.

A greater supply of homes on the listing pages might be the reason it took homes slightly longer to sell.

“May marks the second month in a row where homes spent more time on the market compared with the previous year as inventory continues to grow and home sales remain sluggish,” says Speianu. “However, the time a typical home spends on the market is eight days less than the average May from 2017 to 2019.”

America’s Military Is Not Prepared for War — or Peace

“To be prepared for war,” George Washington said, “is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.” President Ronald Reagan agreed with his forebear’s words, and peace through strength became a theme of his administration. In the past four decades, the American arsenal helped secure that peace, but political neglect has led to its atrophy as other nations’ war machines have kicked into high gear. Most Americans do not realize the specter of great power conflict has risen again.

It is far past time to rebuild America’s military. We can avoid war by preparing for it.

When America’s senior military leaders testify before my colleagues and me on the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee behind closed doors, they have said that we face some of the most dangerous global threat environments since World War II. Then, they darken that already unsettling picture by explaining that our armed forces are at risk of being underequipped and outgunned. We struggle to build and maintain ships, our fighter jet fleet is dangerously small, and our military infrastructure is outdated. Meanwhile, America’s adversaries are growing their militaries and getting more aggressive.

In China, the country’s leader, Xi Jinping, has orchestrated a historic military modernization intended to exploit the U.S. military’s weaknesses. He has overtaken the U.S. Navy in fleet size, built one of the world’s largest missile stockpiles and made big advances in space. President Vladimir Putin of Russia has thrown Europe into war and mobilized his society for long-term conflict. Iran and its proxy groups have escalated their shadow war against Israel and increased attacks on U.S. ships and soldiers. And North Korea has disregarded efforts toward arms control negotiations and moved toward wartime readiness.

Worse yet, these governments are materially helping one another, cooperating in new ways to prevent an American-led 21st century. Iran has provided Russia with battlefield drones, and China is sending technical and logistical help to aid Mr. Putin’s war. They are also helping one another prepare for future fights by increasing weapons transfers and to evade sanctions. Their unprecedented coordination makes new global conflict increasingly possible.

That theoretical future could come faster than most Americans think. We may find ourselves in a state of extreme vulnerability in a matter of a few years, according to a growing consensus of experts. Our military readiness could be at its lowest point in decades just as China’s military in particular hits its stride. The U.S. Indo-Pacific commander released what I believe to be the largest list of unfunded items ever for services and combatant commands for next year’s budget, amounting to $11 billion. It requested funding for a raft of infrastructure, missile defense and targeting programs that would prove vital in a Pacific fight. China, on the other hand, has no such problems, as it accumulates the world’s leading hypersonic arsenal with a mix of other lethal cruise and attack missiles.

Our military leaders are being forced to make impossible choices. The Navy is struggling to adequately fund new ships, routine maintenance and munition procurement; it is unable to effectively address all three. We recently signed a deal to sell submarines to Australia, but we’ve failed to sufficiently fund our own submarine industrial base, leaving an aging fleet unprepared to respond to threats. Two of the three most important nuclear modernization programs are underfunded and are at risk of delays. The military faces a backlog of at least $180 billion for basic maintenance, from barracks to training ranges. This projects weakness to our adversaries as we send service members abroad with diminished ability to respond to crises.

Fortunately, we can change course. We can avoid that extreme vulnerability and resurrect American military might.

On Wednesday I am publishing a plan that includes a series of detailed proposals to address this reality head-on. We have been living off the Reagan military buildup for too long; it is time for updates and upgrades. My plan outlines why and how the United States should aim to spend an additional $55 billion on the military in the 2025 fiscal year and grow military spending from a projected 2.9 percent of our national gross domestic product this year to 5 percent over the next five to seven years.

It would be a significant investment that would start a reckoning over our nation’s spending priorities. There will be conversations ahead about all manner of budget questions. We do not need to spend this much indefinitely — but we do need a short-term generational investment to help us prevent another world war.

My blueprint would grow the Navy to 357 ships by 2035 and halt our shrinking Air Force fleet by producing at least 340 additional fighters in five years. This will help patch near-term holes and put each fleet on a sustainable trajectory. The plan would also replenish the Air Force tanker and training fleets, accelerate the modernization of the Army and Marine Corps, and invest in joint capabilities that are all too often forgotten, including logistics and munitions.

The proposal would build on the $3.3 billion in submarine industrial base funding included in the national security supplemental passed in April, so we can bolster our defense and that of our allies. It would also rapidly equip service members all over the world with innovative technologies at scale, from the seabed to the stars.

We should pair increased investment with wiser spending. Combining this crucial investment with fiscal responsibility would funnel resources to the most strategic ends. Emerging technology must play an essential role, and we can build and deploy much of it in less than five years. My road map would also help make improvements to the military procurement system and increase accountability for bureaucrats and companies that fail to perform on vital national security projects.

This whole endeavor would shake our status quo but be far less disruptive and expensive than the alternative. Should China decide to wage war with the United States, the global economy could immediately fall into a depression. Americans have grown far too comfortable under the decades-old presumption of overwhelming military superiority. And that false sense of security has led us to ignore necessary maintenance and made us vulnerable.

Our ability to deter our adversaries can be regained because we have done it before. At the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, in the twilight of the Soviet Union, George H.W. Bush reflected on the lessons of Pearl Harbor. Though the conflict was long gone, it taught him an enduring lesson: “When it comes to national defense,” he said, “finishing second means finishing last.”

Regaining American strength will be expensive. But fighting a war — and worse, losing one — is far more costly. We need to begin a national conversation today on how we achieve a peaceful, prosperous and American-led 21st century. The first step is a generational investment in the U.S. military.
