A Harvard in-text citation should appear in brackets every time you quote, paraphrase, or refer to information from a source.

The citation can appear immediately after the quotation or paraphrase, or at the end of the sentence. If you’re quoting, place the citation outside of the quotation marks but before any other punctuation like a comma or full stop.

In Harvard referencing, up to three author names are included in an in-text citation or reference list entry. When there are four or more authors, include only the first, followed by ‘ et al. ’

A bibliography should always contain every source you cited in your text. Sometimes a bibliography also contains other sources that you used in your research, but did not cite in the text.

MHRA doesn’t specify a rule about this, so check with your supervisor to find out exactly what should be included in your bibliography.

Footnote numbers should appear in superscript (e.g. 11 ). You can use the ‘Insert footnote’ button in Word to do this automatically; it’s in the ‘References’ tab at the top.

Footnotes always appear after the quote or paraphrase they relate to. MHRA generally recommends placing footnote numbers at the end of the sentence, immediately after any closing punctuation, like this. 12

In situations where this might be awkward or misleading, such as a long sentence containing multiple quotations, footnotes can also be placed at the end of a clause mid-sentence, like this; 13 note that they still come after any punctuation.

When a source has two or three authors, name all of them in your MHRA references . When there are four or more, use only the first name, followed by ‘and others’:

Note that in the bibliography, only the author listed first has their name inverted. The names of additional authors and those of translators or editors are written normally.

A citation should appear wherever you use information or ideas from a source, whether by quoting or paraphrasing its content.

In Vancouver style , you have some flexibility about where the citation number appears in the sentence – usually directly after mentioning the author’s name is best, but simply placing it at the end of the sentence is an acceptable alternative, as long as it’s clear what it relates to.

In Vancouver style , when you refer to a source with multiple authors in your text, you should only name the first author followed by ‘et al.’. This applies even when there are only two authors.

Dissertation word counts vary widely across different fields, institutions, and levels of education:

  • An undergraduate dissertation is typically 8,000–15,000 words
  • A master’s dissertation is typically 12,000–50,000 words
  • A PhD thesis is typically book-length: 70,000–100,000 words

However, none of these are strict guidelines – your word count may be lower or higher than the numbers stated here. Always check the guidelines provided by your university to determine how long your own dissertation should be.

References should be included in your text whenever you use words, ideas, or information from a source. A source can be anything from a book or journal article to a website or YouTube video.

If you don’t acknowledge your sources, you can get in trouble for plagiarism .

Your university should tell you which referencing style to follow. If you’re unsure, check with a supervisor. Commonly used styles include:

Add ‘a’ to the first one you cite, ‘b’ to the second, and so on. Do the same in your bibliography or reference list .

To create a hanging indent for your bibliography or reference list :

  • Highlight all the entries

  • Then close the window with ‘OK’.

Though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, there is a difference in meaning:

  • A reference list only includes sources cited in the text – every entry corresponds to an in-text citation .
  • A bibliography also includes other sources which were consulted during the research but not cited.

For text-based sources, you can use paragraph numbers (e.g. ‘para. 4’) or headings (e.g. ‘under “Methodology”’). With video or audio sources, use a timestamp (e.g. ‘10:15’).

In the acknowledgements of your thesis or dissertation, you should first thank those who helped you academically or professionally, such as your supervisor, funders, and other academics.

Then you can include personal thanks to friends, family members, or anyone else who supported you during the process.

The opposite of the hasty generalization fallacy is called slothful induction fallacy or appeal to coincidence .

It is the tendency to deny a conclusion even though there is sufficient evidence that supports it. Slothful induction occurs due to our natural tendency to dismiss events or facts that do not align with our personal biases and expectations. For example, a researcher may try to explain away unexpected results by claiming it is just a coincidence.

To avoid a hasty generalization fallacy we need to ensure that the conclusions drawn are well-supported by the appropriate evidence. More specifically:

  • In statistics , if we want to draw inferences about an entire population, we need to make sure that the sample is random and representative of the population . We can achieve that by using a probability sampling method , like simple random sampling or stratified sampling .

Although many sources use circular reasoning fallacy and begging the question interchangeably, others point out that there is a subtle difference between the two:

  • Begging the question fallacy occurs when you assume that an argument is true in order to justify a conclusion. If something begs the question, what you are actually asking is, “Is the premise of that argument actually true?” For example, the statement “Snakes make great pets. That’s why we should get a snake” begs the question “are snakes really great pets?”
  • Circular reasoning fallacy on the other hand, occurs when the evidence used to support a claim is just a repetition of the claim itself.  For example, “People have free will because they can choose what to do.”

In other words, we could say begging the question is a form of circular reasoning.

Circular reasoning fallacy uses circular reasoning to support an argument. More specifically, the evidence used to support a claim is just a repetition of the claim itself. For example: “The President of the United States is a good leader (claim), because they are the leader of this country (supporting evidence)”.

An example of a non sequitur is the following statement:

“Giving up nuclear weapons weakened the United States’ military. Giving up nuclear weapons also weakened China. For this reason, it is wrong to try to outlaw firearms in the United States today.”

Clearly there is a step missing in this line of reasoning and the conclusion does not follow from the premise, resulting in a non sequitur fallacy .

The difference between the post hoc fallacy and the non sequitur fallacy is that post hoc fallacy infers a causal connection between two events where none exists, whereas the non sequitur fallacy infers a conclusion that lacks a logical connection to the premise.

In other words, a post hoc fallacy occurs when there is a lack of a cause-and-effect relationship, while a non sequitur fallacy occurs when there is a lack of logical connection.

An example of post hoc fallacy is the following line of reasoning:

“Yesterday I had ice cream, and today I have a terrible stomachache. I’m sure the ice cream caused this.”

Although it is possible that the ice cream had something to do with the stomachache, there is no proof to justify the conclusion other than the order of events. Therefore, this line of reasoning is fallacious.

Post hoc fallacy and hasty generalisation fallacy are similar in that they both involve jumping to conclusions. However, there is a difference between the two:

  • Post hoc fallacy is assuming a cause and effect relationship between two events, simply because one happened after the other.

In advertising, the fallacy of equivocation is often used to create a pun. For example, a billboard company might advertise their billboards using a line like: “Looking for a sign? This is it!” The word sign has a literal meaning as billboard and a figurative one as a sign from God, the universe, etc.

Equivocation is a fallacy because it is a form of argumentation that is both misleading and logically unsound. When the meaning of a word or phrase shifts in the course of an argument, it causes confusion and also implies that the conclusion (which may be true) does not follow from the premise.

The fallacy of equivocation is an informal logical fallacy, meaning that the error lies in the content of the argument instead of the structure.

“ No true Scotsman ” arguments aren’t always fallacious. When there is a generally accepted definition of who or what constitutes a group, it’s reasonable to use statements in the form of “no true Scotsman”.

For example, the statement that “no true pacifist would volunteer for military service” is not fallacious, since a pacifist is, by definition, someone who opposes war or violence as a means of settling disputes.

Reworking your first draft

Finishing your first draft is a milestone in the process of writing a dissertation. Until this point, your ideas may have been quite hazy, but now the real work can start in reorganising and refining your piece.

Your supervisor’s comments should provide you with a clear sense of how you can improve your work. There may be areas in which you need to do some further reading; you may need to restructure your draft to introduce greater balance in your material, or coherence in your ideas. But you also need to be critical of your own work and consider how your analysis and arguments could be strengthened. This is the point at which you should take a step back and consider your work as a whole. Some time away (at least two weeks) from your dissertation is extremely helpful, so try to build this into your schedule. When you come back to it, you will find it much easier to see the bigger picture, and it will become much clearer to you where your overall argument is heading, and how to improve the weaker parts of your analysis.

Ask yourself: what has my work achieved? What is the significance of the conclusions I have reached? Are there ways in which I could push my analysis further? The best dissertations are written by students who are not satisfied with their work until a clear and original argument emerges, and then have the courage (and the time) to rework their drafts radically to bring them into line with that argument.

Editing for style

Spend some time working on the stylistic aspects of your draft. It should be written in a style appropriate for a piece of academic work, which means that it should be clear and concise, using specialist terms accurately but not lapsing into jargon. Avoid colloquialisms, vague or impressionistic language (phrases which sound good but don’t really mean anything), convoluted sentences and too much repetition in lexicon or syntax.

Cutting words

As part of the editing process, students often find that they need to cut a substantial number of words. This can be a laborious and somewhat dispiriting task, as you delete whole sentences and sections which took a lot of energy to write in the first place. But if you find yourself in this situation, think positively: pruning – or hacking – parts of your dissertation will produce a much leaner and meaner piece of work, in which all your points are made with an economy of style (much appreciated by examiners) and rigorously related to your argument, and all irrelevant or fluffy material is suppressed.

Producing a final version

A supervisor may be able to read more than one draft for you, but producing the final version is your responsibility. Allow plenty of time for proofreading: use a spellchecker to find most of the typos, but also read your work through very carefully to eliminate other kinds of error that a spellchecker will not pick up.

  • The  author-date system  (for example, the Harvard system) uses in-text citations like this (Cowle, 2016) in conjunction with a full reference list, where titles are ordered alphabetically.
  • The  short-title system  uses a note marker in the text and puts the full reference in the equivalent footnote or endnote. When the title is used again, a new note number is inserted in the text, but a much shorter version of the title is listed. This system is often used in the humanities.
  • Numbering systems , such as Vancouver and author-number referencing, are frequently used in Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine (STEM).

9 Make several passes

  • Cross check headings, sub-headings and page numbers against the table of contents
  • Check figures and tables are in the right order and numbered and captioned correctly
  • Check in-text citations match your reference list
  • Are you references styled according to your institution’s requirements?

Your PhD thesis is the culmination of years of coursework and research and it can seem pretty overwhelming. Once you complete a draft, your work is far from over. Editing and proofreading are a significant part of your work on your dissertation, but after drafting your chapters, you might feel like you have no idea where to start editing. 

This is where we come in. We’re going to walk you through the dos and dont’s of editing a dissertation thesis chapter to help the process seem less daunting. If you’re ready to learn about how to edit your PhD thesis, read on. 

Do Walk Away and Take a Break

This might seem counterintuitive. You’re finished with a chapter and now you should walk away? The purpose of  taking a break  is to clear your head. Don’t just take a 10-minute break either. Take a whole day, maybe more if you can spare them, and then come back with fresh eyes and a cleared mind to begin editing. 

Don’t Edit as You Write 

You might be tempted to go back and edit after every few paragraphs or pages, but try to resist that urge. If you wait until you have an entire draft of a chapter ready, you will make things much easier on yourself.

If you can wait, you can then move entire sections, judge the quality of a paragraph or section in terms of the entire chapter, and have a better idea of the full picture of the chapter rather than just a small section.

Do Create a Plan

Before you start editing, have a plan. Start with one chapter (do not try to edit the entire dissertation at once) and lay out what you are looking for.

When you edit the first draft of your chapter, you should ask yourself questions as you go through it. You want to examine how it might be improved, what you need to add, what might need to be removed, and what might need to be moved to another section.

Set yourself up with a list of questions to ask yourself as you review each chapter. Yours might differ based on your discipline, but here are some general questions you can start with:

Whether it’s the introduction, literature review, results, or discussion and conclusion chapters, you had a purpose when writing them. That purpose should be clear at the beginning of the chapter and you should carry that through the entire chapter. Ask yourself:

  • What is the purpose of this chapter?
  • Did I make that clear? (i.e., is there a clearly stated purpose of the chapter at the beginning?)
  • Does this chapter and the material in it logically follow the previous chapter?
  • Are there places where things don’t fit or seem to come out of nowhere within the chapter?
  • Am I using adequate transitions between paragraphs and sections?
  • Have I used existing research to justify your process and/or explained that your research is the first on the topic?
  • Is the chapter well-organised and easy to read?
  • Have I appropriately used headings and subheadings to help the flow and organisation?
  • Do I have a strong conclusion that isn’t just a summary of the chapter and gives the reader an idea of the content of the next chapter?
  • Does the writing flow from section to section and chapter to chapter?
  • Have I established myself as an academic authority on the subject?
  • Can I make the writing more concise?

These questions are relevant for each chapter of your dissertation.

Don’t proofread during the editing .

The editing step is focused more on big-picture items, not line edits. Sure, you can fix typos, but don’t worry too much about the small details. The  thorough proofreading  will come later.

You might even hire a  professional proofreader  to handle the line-item editing for you once your draft is finished and edited. Otherwise, the proofreading comes when the writing is done and the PhD is nearly complete.

Do Edit in Stages

The logical editing process is to focus on each chapter at a time. After each chapter is finished, you can edit it (after you’ve walked away from it a bit).

You can also choose to focus on one editorial issue at a time. For example, you could first go through to check for structure in one editing session and then check for purpose in another (this way is a bit more complex and you often find yourself focusing on everything in an editing session, so try a few different methods to see what works best for you).

Don’t Edit the Entire Thing at Once

Just like you need to walk away from a chapter and give yourself a break from it before editing, you also need to give yourself a break between editing sessions. The thought of sitting down to edit the entire dissertation, which could be several hundred pages, is probably extremely overwhelming. It’s enough to make someone procrastinate the editing process because it seems like such a daunting task.

Don’t do this to yourself! Instead, set goals. Decide how much you will edit in one day and stick to that. This will help you to manage your time and also make sure your eyes and mind are fresh as you edit. As you get fatigued from so much reading and editing, you’ll start to miss things.

You didn’t sit down to write the entire thing in one sitting, so don’t expect yourself to edit the whole thing in one sitting.

Revising a dissertation.

Dissertations are written to prove to a small number of mentors that you have mastered the methods and academic literature in your chosen field of study. Books are written to make an original contribution to scholarship in your discipline. Revising a dissertation into your first book involves changes in format and usually also in content that signal your shift from student to professional.

Here are some tips for managing that shift:

  • Drop the literature review. Whether your field requires a formal lit review or not, in the book you will want to foreground your original research and argument, while appropriately acknowledging the scholarship that has enabled your work in the citations.
  • Minimize the number of pages you spend describing the background or explaining the context. There is an art to providing just enough of this material so that your readers understand why you ask the question and make the argument you do, while avoiding tedious summary. Typically, a first book in the humanities and social sciences is aimed at your fellow scholars. They already know the basics. You can focus on just those specifics that highlight the need for your contribution.
  • Trim your citations. You don’t need to prove you have read everything anymore. Cite the most relevant and most recent scholarship and move on. The people you cite will have cited the scholars writing before them, so any halfway diligent researcher can follow the tracks back as far as the field goes.
  • Take some time to absorb the advice and critiques you received from your dissertation committee. Then make a plan for moving the project forward. Do you need to do additional research you didn’t have the time or funding for during grad school? Do you need to address a question that arose in the process of your dissertation research? Did a new archive become available, or a new relevant angle on your specialty? Do you have a job opportunity that would draw your work in one direction rather than another? Did you discover halfway through the dissertation that you are more interested in some other question or body of literature? Now is the time to rethink and rework.
  • Reconsider the organization of your manuscript. As a part of doing more research or taking a new approach, break apart the structure you so carefully built in the dissertation. Does the organization of chapters best serve your argument, or would changes help? Is each chapter successful on its own, or might some chapters’ contents need to be divided and recombined? Might one or more chapters work better as journal articles, opening up room for other material?
  • Think carefully about who your audience is and how best to write for it. Are you addressing primarily scholars or also nonspecialists? Are those nonspecialists college students or general readers? Is your project crossing disciplinary boundaries or combining multiple approaches? Does your project have policy implications, or might it be useful to practitioners? The answers to those questions should shape how you write, from word choices to organization and citations.
  • Take another look at books in your field that you really like. Why are they so successful? What did those authors do that you might emulate?

You probably already know that this is a major project, but you may be curious about how much of your life you’ll need to commit to the process.

Dissertation writing can vary significantly from one student to the next. Even still, learning more about dissertations can help you have a better idea of what you can expect in terms of time commitment and workload.

How Long Does It Take to Write a Dissertation?

Before you sit down to write your PhD dissertation, it makes sense to figure out approximately how long the process is going to take you. That way, you can approach this project with reasonable expectations in mind.

Having an idea of the common timeframe for dissertations may also encourage you to set realistic goals. Many students write their dissertations within 1 to 2 years. In other words, once you reach All But Dissertation (ABD) status, you might be less than 2 years away from completing your PhD program.

You might be anxious to type your dissertation in less than 12 months so that you can move on with your life. While that’s understandable, you may be putting undue pressure on yourself. In fact, your school may require you to spend at least a year on your dissertation.

It’s also possible that you expect to need more than 2 years. As long as you keep moving, that’s okay. Just remember to check your university’s rules. Some schools set a time limit on doctoral enrollment.

No matter how long the process takes, you’ll go through multiple steps as you work toward your goal:

  • Selecting a topic
  • Reviewing relevant literature
  • Developing a research project
  • Conducting research and analyzing the data you gather
  • Outlining your paper
  • Writing the first draft
  • Editing and producing a final draft

You may begin some of these steps, such as deciding on your topic, during the coursework portion of your program. Eventually, though, you’ll move into ABD status, and it will be time to focus solely on the dissertation.

Some students lose motivation at that point. If life is too busy, your wallet feels too strained, or you don’t have a good support system, you may feel like throwing in the towel. It can be especially tempting to quit if the project simply feels too overwhelming. To try and avoid these obstacles to finishing your PhD, it can help to make a plan for writing your dissertation.

You can break the project down into steps, carve out writing time, set attainable goals, and move progressively closer to a final product of which you’ll be proud.

Tips for Dissertation Writing

The answer to “How long does a dissertation take?” depends in large part on your process. Putting the following tips into practice may help you finish more quickly:

  • Understand the assignment . Reading other people’s dissertations can help you get a feel for what you’ll be doing yourself.
  • Dive in early . The sooner you start working on this project, the sooner you’ll be able to finish.
  • Craft an outline . Organizing your thoughts into a workable dissertation structure can make all the difference.
  • Schedule daily sessions . It’s strategic to make sure you write a bit each day. Some people recommend 2 hours of daily writing, but that’s not the best fit for everyone. Figure out how much time you can commit, and pencil it into your calendar.
  • Stretch your legs . Even during a marathon writing session, it helps to give yourself breaks. You might take a quick walk or do some stretches.
  • Get excited about your goals . It’s beneficial to break your process down into milestones and celebrate each time you achieve one.

Finally, it helps to surround yourself with a great support team—such as family, friends, and your faculty advisor—to whom you can turn when times feel tough.

How Long Is a Dissertation?

Each student’s dissertation is a slightly different length. Typically, though, most dissertations are between 100 and 300 pages long. It’s common for them to include about 80,000 words. Some are closer to 100,000 words.

Your school may set guidelines for the length of your paper. The requirements may even vary from one department to the next. For example, dissertations in the natural or physical sciences are often under 100 pages. Dissertations in fields like theology and history commonly contain several hundred pages.

The content will be broken into various chapters, such as the introduction, the methodology, and the results.

What’s the Difference Between a Doctoral Dissertation vs. Thesis?

The words “thesis” and “dissertation” are often used in similar contexts. You can think about which one you’ll be writing during your doctoral studies.

While a dissertation is the standard final project for a PhD, theses are more common at the master’s degree level. In addition, some programs don’t require a dissertation, like several online doctoral programs in education without dissertation , but require a capstone.

Yes, writing a dissertation is a task that is going to take a significant amount of time and effort. But now that you have a better idea of what to expect, you are one step closer to your goal. You can make a plan, block out time, and get your dissertation written.

Remember to surround yourself with support and ask for help as needed. Cheer yourself on throughout the process, and celebrate each milestone. It may take a few years, but you can accomplish this goal!

Dissertation editing: How long does it take?

Dissertation editing can be an intense project, even for manuscripts already in great shape. The time required to edit a dissertation depends on the quality of the writing and the type of editing needed. In this post, I’m going to break down the three main types of dissertation editing I provide to my clients, the time required to complete each type of edit, and of course, the associated costs.

Before I get into the heart of this post, I want to share a quick word of warning. While there are plenty of *amazing* dissertation editors, I’ve also noticed an uptick in not-so-great services being marketed at very low rates. Over the years, I’ve had to edit manuscripts that students paid other writers to edit. Just because someone stumbled through getting their own dissertation published does NOT mean they’re qualified editors. A quality dissertation editor will have testimonials and strong recommendations to support their work, and they’ll also perform sample edits to give you a sense of their skills.

What is a sample edit?

A sample edit is a brief edit (completed by hours or pages) that serves two purposes: (a) it helps you assess an editor’s skills and fit with your project, and (b) it helps the editor develop an accurate quote for your project. This is how the sample edit works with me:

You’ll send me your document — even if it’s not completely ready.  I’ll spend two hours editing a few pages, using track changes.  Once completed, I’ll return the document for your review.  The charge for this service is $180.  If you choose to work with me, the cost is subsumed within the project cost if no other changes are made to those pages.  If you decide to not work with me, you’ll still come away with some good direction for making improvements on your own. Understanding types of dissertation editing

There are three main types of editing that may be needed for your dissertation. You should discuss your project and goals with your editor to make sure everyone is on the same page regarding the project scope. The types of editing I offer include developmental editing, content editing, and line editing.

Developmental editing

Developmental editing takes a “big picture” approach to your project. With developmental editing, I’m looking at all the pieces of your project to ensure cohesion and consistency. Rather than focus on specific grammatical issues (such as punctuation or word choice), a developmental edit ensures your project has a strong foundation, great organization, and that all of the pieces line up (such as the research questions, problem, purpose, method/design, the research discussed in Chapter 2). Developmental editing is ideal when you’ve completed your first draft of the proposal chapters. This type of editing allows me to address potential issues before your chair and committee members have the chance to.

Content editing

Content editing is more focused than developmental editing. Once you’ve got a strong foundation, content editing can improve the quality and breadth of the content in your chapters. Content editing can involve providing feedback or adding content/resources to strengthen your chapters. Content editing also focuses on the tone of your writing, making sure it is academic and formal, while ensuring the focus of each sentence and paragraph is clear and builds in a logical fashion.

Line editing

Finally, the most precise form of editing is line editing. A line edit should happen AFTER solid content and development of your project. Line editing provides the final polishing of your project, making sure the grammar, style, formatting, and word choice are perfect. A line edit does NOT take a macro approach – this type of edit is focused on the nitty gritty, so it’s important that line editing is not performed until the content and organization of the chapters are approved! Line edits are typically performed twice: right before the proposal defense, and then after the final defense (before publication). A line edit will also address the verb tense changes (future tense to past tense) needed to convert Chapters 1-3 for the final dissertation manuscript.  

How much does dissertation editing cost?

The cost of an edit will depend on the needs of a project. Some editors charge by the word or the page, others (like me) charge based on an hourly rate. A project quote will require a review of your work, but here’s a general idea of typical editing speeds for each of the aforementioned types of edit:

Developmental: 3-5 pages per hour

Content: 1-4 pages per hour

Line: 3-6 pages per hour

As you can see, there’s quite a range. For example, a line edit of a pretty well written, 80-page proposal could be performed at 6 pages per hour, and completed in about 12-13 hours (total price: $1080-$1170).

How to find the best dissertation editing services?

Before hiring someone to edit a dissertation, ask around, read testimonials, and request a sample edit! After you’ve found an editor you like, get a written contract that outlines the scope of the project. Be sure the editor agrees to fix errors on their part (missed typos, grammatical issues, etc.) at no charge. ALSO, ensure the agreement lists a clear turnaround time. Students are typically working with tight timelines!

How long does it take to write a dissertation? The most accurate (and least helpful) answer is, it depends. Since that’s probably not the answer you’re looking for, I’ll use the rest of the article to address the realities of how long it takes to write a dissertation.

How Long Does It Take to Write a Dissertation?

Based on my experience, writing your dissertation should take somewhere between 13-20 months. These are average numbers based upon the scores of doctoral students that I have worked with over the years, and they generally hold true.

I have seen people take less time and more time, but I believe that with concerted effort, the 13-20 month timeframe is reasonable.

University Requirements

Once you hit the dissertation stage, some schools require a minimum number of hours in the dissertation area before you can graduate. Many schools require the equivalent of one year of dissertation credits to graduate. 

So, even if you can finish your dissertation in three months, you will still have to pay for nine more months of dissertation credits before you can graduate. However, unless research and writing is your superpower, I wouldn’t worry about having to pay extra tuition.

But this requirement does offer some insight into how long it takes to write a dissertation. Based on this requirement, it’s reasonable to expect that writing your dissertation will take a year of more. This is consistent with my experience.

However, this timeframe is based on several assumptions. First, I am assuming that you are continually working towards finishing your dissertation. This means that no family emergencies, funding conundrums, or work issues get in the way of completing. Second, there are no major changes in your dissertation committee. Third, you will have access to the data that you need. 

Assuming these assumptions hold true, this article should give you a general idea of how long it might take to write your dissertation.

How Long Does it Take to Write A Dissertation? Stage-By-Stage

Let’s break down each stage of the dissertation writing process and how long it takes. 

Prospectus 

This is the hardest one to judge, as this is where you lay the groundwork for the rest of your dissertation and get buy-in from committee members. Normally this takes from 3-6 months. Not all of this is writing time, though–much of it is spent refining your topic and your approach.

Why does this stage take so long? For many people, starting to express themselves using an academic voice can take time. This can hold up the review process as your committee members ask for writing-related revisions before they even get to evaluating the content. Don’t worry, once you learn the academic language things will start to flow more easily.

One common mistake students make is lack of specificity, both in their writing in general and in their topic focus. 

Proposal (Chapters 1-3)

Chapter 1 is often an expansion of your Prospectus. However, you’ll be expected to develop your ideas more and have even more specificity on things like your research question and methodology, so don’t underestimate how long this chapter will take.

Chapter 2 can take some time as you will be digging deep into the literature but I think this can be done in 3-4 months. One caution, some people, and committees, like to start with Chapter 2 so that you are immersed in the literature before completing Chapters 1 and 3. Regardless of where you start, 3-4 months is a good estimate.

Chapter 3 requires an in-depth explanation of your methodology. I suggest working closely with your Chair on this one to avoid multiple submissions and revisions. Get clear on your methodology and make sure you and your chair are on the same page before you write, and continue to check in with your chair, if possible, throughout the process.

IRB Approval

While this step can be full of details and require several iterations it seems that allowing 2 months is sufficient. Most schools have an IRB form that must be submitted. To save time you can usually start filling out the form while your committee is reviewing your Proposal.

Collecting Data

This step varies a great deal. If you are using readily available secondary data this can take a week but if you are interviewing hard to get individuals or have trouble finding a sufficient number of people for your sample this can take 4 months or more. I think 1-4 months should be appropriate

Chapters 4 and 5

These two chapters are the easiest to write as in Chapter 4 you are reporting your results and in Chapter 5 you explain what the results mean. I believe that these two chapters can be written in 2 months.

Defense and Completion

You will need to defend your dissertation and then go through all of the university requirements to finalize the completion of your dissertation. I would allow 2 months for this process.

Variables That Affect How Long It Takes to Write A Dissertation 

When students say something like, “I’m going to finish my dissertation in three months,” they likely aren’t considering all of the variables besides the actual writing. Even if you’re a fast writer, you’ll have to wait on your committee’s comments, 

Timing Issues

Many schools have response times for committee members. This is important when looking at how long it takes to finish a dissertation. For example, it you have two committee members and they each get up to 2 weeks for a review, it can take up to a month to get a document reviewed, each time you submit. So, plan for these periods of time when thinking about how long that it will take you.

Addressing Comments

How long it takes to write your dissertation also depends on your ability to address your committee’s comments thoroughly. It’s not uncommon for a committee member to send a draft back several times, even if their comments were addressed adequately, because they notice new issues each time they read it. Save yourself considerable time by making sure you address their comments fully, thus avoiding unnecessary time waiting to hear the same feedback.

This is the biggest variable in the dissertation model. How dedicated are you to the process? How much actual time do you have? How many outside interests/requirements do you have? Are you easily distracted? How clean does your workspace need to be? (This may seem like a strange thing to discuss, but many people need to work in a clean space and can get very interested in cleaning if they have to write). Are you in a full-time program or in a part time program? Are you holding down a job? Do you have children? 

All of these things will affect how much time you have to put into writing–or rather, how disciplined you need to be about making time to write.

One of the things that can influence how long it takes to write your dissertation is your committee. Choose your committee wisely. If you work under the assumption that the only good dissertation is a done dissertation, then you want a committee that will be helpful and not trying to prove themselves on your back. When you find a Chair that you can work with ask her/him which of their colleagues they work well with (it’s also worth finding out who they don’t work well with).

Find out how they like to receive material to review. Some members like to see pieces of chapters and some like to see completed documents. Once you know their preferences, you can efficiently submit what they want when they want it.

How Long Does it Take to Write a Dissertation? Summary

Barring unforeseen events, the normal time range for finishing a dissertation seems to be 13-19 months, which can be rounded to one to one and a half years. If you are proactive and efficient, you can usually be at the shorter end of the time range.

That means using downtime to do things like changing the tense of your approved Proposal from future tense to past tense and completing things like you Abstract and Acknowledgement sections before final approval.

I hope that you can be efficient in this process and finish as quickly as possible. Remember, “the only good dissertation is a done dissertation.”

The answer to the questions is yes. But of course, the less time you have, the more pressure you are under.

How Long Does it Take to Write a 10,000-word Dissertation?

This is a common question, as is “How long does it take to write a 7,000-word dissertation?” There is no figure in hours or days that answers this; it differs for everyone.  “Is it possible to write a 10,000-word dissertation in two days?” Well, yes. But you will only find out if you can do it when the two days are up. You need to get started immediately, follow our advice and use our dissertation guides . But we are not claiming it’s easy.

Can I Complete my Dissertation in 3 Days? How Fast do I Need to Write?

If you have to produce 10,000 words in ten days, you have to average 1,000 a day. If you have two days, then 5,000 per day and if you work on it for 12 hours each of those days, you need to turn out 417 words per hour. A tall order, but it can be done. Do not let panic or pressure overwhelm you; and remember, it is perfectly acceptable to ask for help . You can stop asking your friends ‘How quickly can you write a dissertation?’ You are going to show them how quickly.

Can I Really Produce 10,000 Words in a Week?

How long d oes it take to write a 10k word dissertation? To give you some perspective, most people speak this many words in a day with no effort. You probably have more than enough words in your notes. It will make a big difference if you have your research project results analysis done already. If this is the case, you ‘only’ need to write them up. If you already made a good start but you are having trouble progressing, maybe you just need to focus on writing up your findings or certain chapters or areas.

You might think your notes are messy and disorganised or that they lack the right academic sound. Regardless, do not think of this task as producing all 10,000 words, rather, it is laying out your notes, organising them, and giving them a more formal, academic tone.

Can you write a dissertation in a day? This is surely the most demanding academic writing challenge. It means 100% focus and work: Type up your notes, ensuring they have an academic/formal tone to them. Keep going, section by section and as it grows, you will start to see your dissertation appear.

Preparing to Write your Dissertation Fast

Prepare to start work.

You know your subject well, and you have probably written many essays on it by now. The main difference is that this assignment is longer. So, let’s get started. You need to prepare well; normal life can be suspended for the time you will spend working. The first preparations to make concern you and where you are going to work.

Distractions and Interruptions

Turn off your phone and avoid TV. If you are really serious, you will really do it. When you procrastinate or allow yourself to be distracted, what do you do? Gaming? Staring out of the window? Baking? Make these things difficult or impossible to do. Be aware of something called productive procrastination. This is when you do something productive but it’s not what you are meant to be doing. Do not mistake activity for productivity. When you find yourself vacuuming around your desk, snap out of it.

I’m Writing my Dissertation all Week. Quiet, Please

Some people can work with music playing, and some need silence. Listening to words, whether sung or spoken, can distract you when producing text. If there is something that will help you, such as instrumental music, use it. Make sure everyone knows what you are doing and ask them to leave you alone (except for bringing you food and drinks). Can someone else handle your duties and obligations for a while?

Create a Work Area

Set up a workplace and de-clutter it. Remove irrelevant books and anything you can fiddle with. Gather all your materials: this means textbooks, notes on paper and in digital form. Your research is likely over, but you will need everything to hand.

Give all materials specific places and keep them there. As you use them, you will remember where they are. Putting them down in different places will mean time lost looking for them, which will add frustration to the work.

Do All of your Legwork Before Starting

Getting up and walking away from the desk unnecessarily uses time you do not have. Do not let shopping trips interrupt your work. If you do not have enough food and supplies in before starting, get them first. Certain foods/snacks can help get you through, maybe you can suspend your usual health regime for a while. You need to feel comfortable in this. But do not overdo the caffeine or sugar .

Make a Work Schedule

Look ahead at your available time and make a schedule. If you work 21 hours on the first day, you might find yourself burnt out the next day. Sleep when you have to, work when you feel good. How long can you realistically work each day? Be careful not to create an unrealistic schedule, you will not keep up to it and will become demoralised. Remember that writing the dissertation is only 1% of your entire course; it is acceptable to get help at this late stage.

Where to Start

Start here – write an outline.

As well as a work schedule, you need a dissertation structure . You may be tempted to think that making an outline for your dissertation is extra work, that it would be quicker to just start writing. That would be like going on a driving tour to every European country with no plan. Without regular destinations, you will drift about aimlessly.

You can save time by focussing only on the main parts of the dissertation. If you run out of time, it will be better if the parts not completed are the less significant ones, although ideally nothing should be left unfinished. This is an exercise in prioritisation: Write the most valuable, points-scoring parts first.

Sacrifices May be Necessary

With a tight time limit, you might have to make sacrifices. People with the luxury of time will spend a day or more on just the table of contents or references section . You might not have this option. The focus has to be on the rapid production of text and its quality; things like detailed formatting and page layout will be secondary.

Prioritising your Order of Work

In the detailed plan below, skip the greyed-out parts to start with. You can use this to create an outline by adding a note under each part of the different sections stating what you are going to include there. This is where the job starts to appear less daunting; 10,000 now becomes 2,000 for this section, 1,000 for that section… The mountain becomes a set of smaller hills. And the introduction section can be written after the body, it is easier and quicker that way.

Writing the Dissertation Body

When you have an outline, you need to put some meat on those bones and build a body. Working from start to finish may be best (skipping the introduction), but the order you work in is your choice. If your notes are not in order, a quick way to identify notes that apply to the different sections is to mark them with different coloured highlighters as in the table above. This will draw your eyes to the relevant notes quickly. You can do this on your computer screen by highlighting similarly.

After the main body, the introduction is next. This will be easier to write because all the information will be fresh in your mind. What next? The appendices or the parts at the front? This should be your decision based on remaining time.

Good Practices for Writing your Dissertation

Ignore spelling and grammar.

Do not pay attention to spelling, grammar, and language rules at this stage. Attending to spelling and grammatical details as you work will distract you and spoil your flow. Spelling and grammatical mistakes do not matter in a work in progress. You can turn checking functions off until you reach the editing and proofreading stage. Concentrate only on writing up your notes, do not switch between tasks.

Attend to One Part of the Dissertation at a Time

Constantly switching between research, writing, and tidying up the reference section is inefficient. Each time you switch, your mind needs time to catch up then settle into that activity. By focussing, we mean you should do all the analysis in one session until it is finished, all the writing of major sections in another, and sorting out the reference section can be done in one sitting. Less switching saves time and usually turns out a better job.

Save and Back up Routinely

When you leave the desk, click to save your work. Also do this after any burst of writing, and at regular intervals. Back up your work on another drive too. This is one of the most important things you will write. Treat it as the valuable document that it is.

For when you resume work, make sure you know where you left off, highlight it if that helps. When you come back to your work the next day, sometimes you can’t remember where you were; it can be difficult to resume the same line of thought. Have a Strict but Simple Method of Noting Sources

Every time you quote or paraphrase something, note the source. Use a simple referencing technique while writing that does not demand much time. One such method is for the first in-text reference, just put (1) after the quote, use (2) for the second and so on. Start a list of sources that correspond to each number. You could highlight the numbers in a specific colour so you can attend to them later and not miss any. Missing just one reference, even accidentally, will still count as plagiarism . Before you start, be absolutely clear whether you are including a reference list or bibliography . Completing your list according to the required style ( Harvard , Chicago, etc.) can be done in one session.

Get a Qualified Appraisal of your Work

You will need someone to read your finished work. Having it read by someone unfamiliar with the subject and the structure of dissertations will be unproductive. Ideally it should be someone who understands the topic. And these days that person need not be physically present; you can email your draft to someone to get an opinion on changes & improvements .

Writing your Dissertation in Days

We are not going to sugar-coat the task of producing a dissertation in days rather than months and weeks. It is not easy, and regardless of what caused you to have such a short time remaining, it puts all your work in jeopardy. When someone asks us “Can I complete my dissertation in three days?” we have to answer yes, you can, but… It depends on the individual, how much work you have done so far, your personal circumstances, your other obligations, how much of those three days can you dedicate to the task.

How long does it take to write a PhD thesis?

My short answer is 68 days, but please read the detail below…

As a PhD supervisor I have often been asked ‘How long do you think it will take me to write up my thesis?’ My answer always begins ‘It depends…’ We then continue the conversation with an audit of material already drafted that may contribute (in edited format) to the final thesis. These include the initial literature review from the first year transfer report, and posters, conference papers and journal articles presented and/or published from the on-going work.

For example third year PhD student John Mowbray , who is currently based within the Centre for Social Informatics (CSI) at Edinburgh Napier University , has a strong basis for his literature review chapter in the form of a conference paper delivered at CoLIS 2016 , which is due to be published in full in Information Research later this year. Similarly John’s fellow student Frances Ryan has already published an account of research design for her study. This paper will underpin the writing of her methods chapter.

Then we consider less formal sources, such as any discussions or debates that the student has documented publicly elsewhere, for example in blog posts. See, for instance Lyndsey Jenkins ‘ recent thoughts about the importance of research domain at http://lyndseyjenkins.org. These may well contribute to a section of Lyndsey’s methods chapter when she comes to write up her work in 2018.

The students also have ‘non-public’ material about their work that will be adapted for their theses. These include interim reports for their supervisors and/or other stakeholders. For example, last semester CSI PhD student Iris Buunk wrote a report on some of the empirical work that she has conducted for the body that gave her access to survey respondents. Handwritten ideas and remarks kept in notebooks over the course of PhD registration are also very valuable ‘private’ resources.

Once we have completed this audit, the challenge of transforming all the work completed to date into an 80,000 word thesis appears not to be so great – but of course, it still all needs to be done!

Records from writing up my own PhD have also recently served as another source for answering questions about preparing the main output of the doctoral study. I undertook my PhD part-time over a period of just over four years while working full-time. Throughout this period there were weeks when I could not progress my work at all. This was largely due to other commitments in intensive periods related to teaching such as the marking season towards the end of each semester. There were other times when it was much easier to devote myself to my PhD. For example, I took annual leave in University vacation time for this purpose (rather than went away on holiday). To guard against losing track of my PhD at times when I was too busy to devote any time to it I kept detailed notes of my progress. As a result of this, I know exactly how much time I spent writing up each chapter for the final version of the thesis. Although all PhD theses are different, the proportion of time on each type of chapter may be helpful to those who have resolved to submit their theses in 2017.

In total it took me 68 days to write up my thesis (NB 68 to write up the work, not 68 days to complete the PhD!) This is the equivalent of approximately 14 working weeks, assuming a five day week. It needs to be borne in mind, however, that I was a part-time student. In practice the writing up was done over the last seven months of the four and half years in which I worked on the entire doctoral study.

The largest portion of the writing-up time – around three quarters – was spent on the two chapters that related the findings of my research, and about a fifth on the discussion chapter. My literature review took very little time to write up (just 5 days) because I had already presented much of it in published form. The methods and conclusions chapters did not take very long either (3.5 and 2.5 days respectively) largely because their content was straightforward. My introductory chapter was very short at a page and a half and was thus drafted in just a couple of hours.

As might be deduced from the time allocations given above, I found the results and discussion chapters most heavy-going. The former was due to the quantity of empirical data to convert into a fluent account of the findings, and the latter because of the intellectual challenge of expressing the meaning of the findings and how the outcomes of my study represented an original contribution to the domain. However, once these two elements were ‘cracked’ it was a relatively easy task to pull all the other chapters together.

If you are reading this blog post as a PhD student in the later stages of your work, I would advise you to be prepared for the long haul of writing up your results and the discussion chapters, and ensure that you allocate a high proportion of your write-up time to these accordingly. It is also worth noting that I found that the closer I came to the target of completing my write-up, the more important it was for me to avoid other distractions. You cannot control for all of them (for example, illness), but I would caution against getting actively involved in anything that will take you away from your PhD at this intensive stage, such as planning a big event (for example, a major holiday, a house move, or a family wedding) or starting a new job.

If you are still in the early stages of your doctoral study, my first piece of advice is to plan your conference participation and journal paper publishing activity with the final thesis in mind. Be selective and strategic so that you prioritise engagement in external events that are valuable to the completion of your thesis and/or your future career. Each piece of work that you present externally should progress your study by encouraging you to write-up as you go along (for example in the form of a poster, a set of slides, a full paper), defend your ideas in person within your academic community, seek feedback on work completed to date, and solicit advice on the later stages. You should also be documenting any thoughts or ideas that may be valuable to writing up in a format that make sense to you, whether this be in a set of handwritten notes or in a more public format such as a series of structured blog posts.

How to Write Your Final Year Dissertation in Three Weeks

Ah, the dissertation. That one word that everyone dreads to hear when they begin their final year of university.

But why is it that we view the dissertation as the essay to end all essays? Is it really that much of a burden?

Where do I begin?

And may I say it, what even is a dissertation??

The dreaded final year

When I began my final year, it was the elephant in the room. It was compulsory on my course and no one wanted to be the first person to say the word out loud.

Nor did anyone want to put it out there that they actually didn’t really know what a dissertation was (I was one of those people).

We had all somehow made it to final year without ever having written a literature review.

I didn’t know what a literature review was, how to write one or what on earth I was doing, yet we were asked to have one written on our chosen subject in two weeks’ time.

Not going to happen.

How do I decide on my topic? What will my question be? When do I start? Where do I start?

Can someone please tell me what a dissertation is??

These are just a sample of the questions that were running though my mind during the first ten minutes of my first dissertation class this time last year.

So, what is a dissertation?

Apologies in advance to any lecturers reading this blog post but this will be my understanding of it, in the most simple of terms and do correct me if I have gotten it totally wrong.

You may be already shaking your head at the title of this blog post as it should have taken me more than three weeks to write my dissertation, but that was my timeline and I somehow came out with a first (which is why I feel ok to give some advice on this).

To my knowledge, a dissertation is a large document of research surrounding a question or topic of interest.

A dissertation is you, trying to find out the answer to a question that you have or a theory that you are trying to prove.

I’ve always been interested in women in powerful positions and whether they are married and have children .

Growing up, it always seemed to be that in order to be a successful woman, you had to give up one to have the other.

I’ve always wanted to carry out a study on it but it had nothing to do with public relations so, influencer marketing it was.

Picking the topic of your dissertation

Think of something that you don’t know much about, or you want to know more about, or that isn’t written about much or something that really interests and intrigues you.

One thing I really recommend is to make your dissertation something that you are actually intrigued by or interested in because if crisis comms doesn’t incite any feelings for you at all, you won’t want to spend months thinking and writing about it.

Influencer marketing is clearly something that interests me a great deal and in particular, fraud , return on investment and advertising get me hyped up when discussing the matter. Thankfully I was actually really motivated by my dissertation and got a lot of inspiration for blog posts on the way to the finish line.

I wanted to know about fraud in the influencer industry and how it can impact brands and their return on investment.

Return on investment is already quite hard to measure without throwing in influencer fraud, so it was quite tricky to get data but interesting all the same!

Take it section by section

The best way to start off is by laying out each section and heading of your entire dissertation.

Start off with your question, your objectives and then my layout went as follows:

  • Introduction
  • Literature review
  • Methodology
  • Discussion and analysis
  • Limitations
  • Conclusions
  • Recommendations
  • Bibliography

I think it’s a lot more simplified when you lay it out in sections and it also allows you to add things in different places as you go along and saves you from getting bored from focusing on the same section for hours on end.

Change it up a little and take an hour doing your literature review, then an hour analysing your data and so on.

There’s a lot of reading to be done, so make sure to factor that into the deadline too!

Aim for 700 words a day

If you’re aiming to do it within three weeks, obviously.

It’s really not that much. Don’t think of 10,000 words as horrific. It’s doable.

Even make it 500 words a day.

If you start with three weeks to go, you can write 10,000 words in twenty days.

But some days you will write more than others and your word count will be more like 15,000 by deadline day.

My word count came to 17,000 by the end of it and I managed to whittle it down to 11,500 when submitting.

I think it’s better to have more words than less but it’s also hard to delete things after as you think everything is necessary and important.

Quality over quantity, remember. Just sit, take a few hours and make it to 500 words a day.

It shouldn’t take you long and 500 words realistically isn’t that much when it comes to dissertation writing.

Make your literature review an ongoing process

When I started my literature review, I didn’t even know where to begin.

We had somehow made it to final year without ever having the need to have completed one before. Our lecturers just assumed that we had all written one so required no guidance.

My summary of it is that you have a topic, and within that topic, a lot of sub-topics and you just find a lot of literature written about those sub-topics and write what people think of those sub-topics.

Aka, ‘this person says this, but this person disagrees and says this, and then this person also agrees with this.’

The main topic of my dissertation was influencer fraud. My literature review was based around influencer marketing and discussed the following terms: influencer marketing, influencer fraud , virtual influencers , return on investment, advertising on social media , the lot.

I would just read a lot of different articles surrounding influencer marketing and then if anything fit into my headings, I would populate my literature review with statements and thoughts that were relevant.

I think it made things a lot easier but I also took time to actually research individual sub-topics to find a lot of articles and journals that spoke about different view points.

It helped that I could keep reading along the way and keep adding to my literature review.

Do your dissertation research early on

This part helped me a lot with my dissertation.

I’d traveled to London in early March to meet with my placement year team and we had a lengthy chat about influencer marketing and fraud.

I recorded the entire conversation on my laptop and that was my primary research complete.

Then, I made a survey for secondary research and posted this online around two weeks before my deadline. I ended up with 50 responses, so was more than happy with that.

Carry out interviews or sampling as early as you can so that you have that stored away and ready to analyse when you need to.

If it comes to April and you still haven’t carried out any primary research, it could get quite stressful.

I had made a dissertation plan back in the first week of university in October. Telling myself I would be in London either before or just after Christmas to interview my placement team. But of course, that never happened.

Try to do it as early as you can. Send out any email questions that you have as early as you can to give your interviewee time to answer them.

Meet with your dissertation tutor on the regular

I wasn’t the best at this part. When I did go to my tutor, I didn’t really have that much to show.

But leading up to the last few weeks before deadline day, I was scheduling meetings as often as I could, coming in with 100 questions to ask.

Your dissertation tutor is very likely going to be the person that will be marking your dissertation. Make sure to listen to everything they say. If they suggest to change something, change it.

If they like things a certain way, make sure they are.

They are there to give you advice, answer your questions and steer you in the right direction. Listen to them and make the most of the time that they are willing to give to you.

Find where you work best

One thing that helped me most was working in the cafe across the street from my flat.

I would turn up there on my day off, my free mornings or evenings and early on weekends. With only my laptop, charger and notes. And spend a good eight hours from morning to night, typing away.

If I didn’t have my regular working spot at Root Coffee in Liverpool , I probably couldn’t have completed my dissertation in that time.

I didn’t like the library as I find it so intimidating walking through the floors to find a free computer. There aren’t many windows, no one brings coffee to your desk and other students can be very distracting.

I used to love sitting in Root Coffee . Enjoying the best coffee in Liverpool, being able to focus on my dissertation with background noise and some good music. And also being able to order my favourite ‘Norway Meets Sweden’ breakfast which was eggs, avocado toast and smoked salmon.

If you don’t work well in the library, don’t work there, even if you feel you have to.

If you work better in your bedroom, write your dissertation there. Or, if you work best in the middle of the night, just do it then.

Make things easier for yourself, don’t just do what everyone else is doing.

Don’t dread the dissertation, take it in your stride and prepare for it. Take it a day at a time. If I can do it in three weeks, you’ll be fine if you start thinking about it now.
