Sadhguru, in one of his lectures, once said that India is successful to remain largely unharmed despite so many foreign invasions because of its diversity. The foreign enemies could not wrap their heads around how to rule such a diverse country. Their tactic to rule North India did not work in the South. Their clever policies to destroy Western India did not work in the East. As a result, nobody could destroy India as a whole.

Today, India is home to many cultures, religions, castes, and creeds. The same moon that the Hindu women see to break their fasts on Karva Chauth is also seen by the Muslims to break their fasts on the last day of Ramzan. We eat Bengal’s Rasgullas after finishing Hyderabadi Biryani. We dance to Punjabi foot-tapping tunes wherever we may live. India is progressing scientifically, culturally, and spiritually because of this unity.

India got independence in 1947. Despite that, she has grown rapidly. This would not have been possible if India was not united. On one hand, the Punjabis protected the country from Pakistan and China, on the other, Bengal and Bombay proved India’s cultural superiority. When the politicians from central India were busy fending off Chinese and American diplomatic obstacles, then, the Tamil scientist C.V. Today there are people in politics, in society, and in our neighbouring countries who want to see chaos because of the religious riots. They all have their agendas. A broken country is easy to destroy. It is also good for vote-bank politics also.

Again, some states want to get separated from India despite so many years passing after independence. These demands are fuelled by both the neighbouring country’s invitation and by the negligence of the political leaders and their failure.

India is growing not because of any particular group of people - it is growing because of the combined work of the people of Punjab, Sindhu, Gujarat, Maratha, Dravida, Utkala, and Banga. I n the history of institutionalized relations between states, the preservation of peace and stability has always been a predominant concern—an ideal that is also enunciated in the Preamble to the Charter of the United Nations. The gap between the idea of peace and the reality of tension and conflict, however, has proven to be a major challenge to the world organization ever since its foundation after World War II—and that challenge was not only due to conflicting political and economic interests. Situations of conflict often arise in a complex setting of historical, social, cultural and political interaction between communities; accordingly, they must be dealt with in a multifaceted and integrative manner. In order to "practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours", as the peoples of the United Nations proclaim in the Preamble to the Charter, we first have to understand each other, or appreciate each other's way of life and socio-cultural identity. This is only possible if we are knowledgeable about our distinct cultures, traditions and value systems. This truth is also reflected in the Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) according to which "ignorance of each other's ways and lives has been a common cause, throughout the history of mankind", of suspicion and mistrust through which their differences have "all too often broken into war".

As an important element of a durable order of peace among nations and peoples, cultural relations have rightly become a preoccupation of modern foreign policy. However, under the conditions of today's global village, with the simultaneity and constant interaction among distant and distinct traditions, social identities and value systems, cultural foreign policy in the conventional diplomatic sense is not enough anymore. With the geopolitical changes that unfolded after the end of the Cold War, and in particular since the fateful events at the beginning of the new millennium, the promotion of intercultural understanding has become more than just an ingredient, as important as it may be, of "peaceful coexistence" among nations. After the end of the bipolar world order, which had divided the world along ideological lines, dialogue among cultures and civilizations has indeed become an existential issue for the international community, a goal which the United Nations General Assembly has identified as such in its resolution in 2001 as the "United Nations Year of Dialogue Among Civilizations"—a decision notably adopted before the events of 11 September of that year.

The new orientation suggested here requires a systemic approach that takes into account the interdependence between the realms of culture, politics and the economy, and makes intercultural relations a defining element of foreign policy, something which the International Progress Organization has been advocating since 1974 in its first international conference on "The Cultural Self-comprehension of Nations". Our concerns were echoed, at the time, in the words of UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, who, in a special message to the conference, emphasized that there is "no future for mankind unless tolerance and understanding between cultures and nations . become the rule rather than the exception".

In our era of global interconnectedness, the assertion of cultural identity can only be envisioned on the basis of mutual respect and the acceptance of diversity. The conventional, often patronizing and propaganda-like approach in the domain of cultural cooperation, a legacy of the colonial era with its unilateral mindset, has essentially failed in the increasingly multi-polar framework of globalization. A culture can only realize itself and reach a state of maturity if it is able to relate to other cultures and life-worlds in a comprehensive and interactive sense, a process one might also characterize by reference to what we have termed the "dialectics of cultural self-comprehension". The strength of a people or nation indeed depends on the ability to interact with other communities in a complex, multidimensional manner, something that also includes the capacity to see oneself through the eyes of the other. In particular, civilizations cannot be allied if the exponents of one civilization wage war against exponents of another civilization. Furthermore, in the twenty-first century, there must be no wars with civilizational undertones. Such conflicts poison the intercultural climate not only globally but at the regional and domestic levels as well, thereby eroding the very foundations of multicultural societies and threatening the long-term stability of states.
One cannot preach cultural dialogue internationally and reject the very notion of multiculturalism domestically. Consistency in the implementation of a policy of dialogue is absolutely essential for the integrative approach.

In view of the experiences in the 10 years since the UN initially highlighted the goal of a dialogue among civilizations, a number of practical measures may be considered in the fields of education, politics, diplomacy, sports and tourism that follow from a comprehensive and integrative approach, and that will be required to make dialogue a meaningful and relevant factor of international relations. We can mention here only a few such measures:

In education: under the auspices of UNESCO, the adaptation of domestic curricula and school textbooks to today's multicultural realities should continue in a coordinated manner, and cultural stereotyping should be completely eliminated from national curricula. Educational systems should, as far as possible, reflect the actual diversity in terms of cultures and religions. Wherever possible, studies abroad should be facilitated and integrated into standard curricula by way of academic exchange programmes.

In the field of sports: the transnational dimension of modern mass spectator sports such as football should be properly reflected and made use of in terms of the potential for overcoming a narrow-minded perception of "the other" as adversary. It is strangely inconsistent and totally unacceptable that, while a national team comprises players of different cultures, ethnicities or races, the national fans of that very team indulge in nationalist enemy stereotypes and differences. One cannot be a cosmopolitan in the worldwide engage in chauvinistic acts.

In international tourism: the potential of today's global travel industry, an essential factor of income for many countries especially in the developing world, should be fully used in terms of the opportunity it provides for intercultural encounters and knowledge. In that regard, the impact of certain practices of mass tourism should be carefully assessed—such as exporting one's local conditions to distant places without due consideration of the compatibility of lifestyles. Tourism should not create animosities and nurture mutual prejudices, but should help to overcome them.

In domestic politics: countries whose leaders have begun to question, or even reject outright, the rationale of multiculturalism may find it useful to study the actual experience with multicultural societies in other parts of the world, especially in post-colonial countries. Traditionally monocultural societies in the industrialized world that have become multicultural due to migration and economic globalization can learn from societies in states that were originally established on a multicultural basis. Such an exchange of intercultural experiences could play a constructive role in today's increasingly interconnected world, especially as regards the reduction of tensions within countries. The phasing out of racial, religious or ethnic profiling by immigration authorities will be another important contribution from the domestic side to an integrative approach to intercultural dialogue.

In the field of international law: the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions should be implemented systematically and in all its aspects. It is to be hoped that those major industrialized states that have not yet acceded to or ratified the convention will do so in the near future. According to the integrative approach which we are advocating here, support for a global dialogue among civilizations cannot be delinked from the commitment to interculturality as defined in Article 4(8) of the Convention—in the sense of "existence and equitable interaction of diverse cultures and the possibility of generating shared cultural expressions through dialogue and mutual respect".

In the domain of the internet and new social media: the last decades' rapid development of information technology that has enabled entirely new forms of interactive communication has also transformed, or is about to transform, societies and state systems. One may fairly assume that the interconnectivity and interactivity within today's global information village—not to speak of the wealth of information and educational material that has become available to users almost instantly—will gradually contribute to the normalization of cultural diversity in the eyes of the global public, and foster a more mature and lasting acceptance of differences. One cannot be a cosmopolitan in the worldwide web and a chauvinist at home.

The nations that are publicly committed to partnership and dialogue among civilizations must live up to this challenge. They should make clear that no state or people, as influential or powerful as they may be, can use the paradigm of dialogue to justify a strategy or policy of cultural superiority. The threat of culture wars and conflicts due to civilizational exceptionalism must be ended once and for all. The unity of mankind can only be preserved, and peace can only be maintained through the recognition of the diversity of the human race with all that this entails in terms of an integrated policy of economic, social and cultural cooperation.

A diversity essay is a college admissions essay that focuses on you as an individual and your relationship with a specific community. The purpose of this essay is to reveal what makes you different from other applicants, including what unique challenges or barriers you've faced and how you've contributed to or learned from a specific community of people.

Generally speaking, the diversity college essay is used to promote diversity in the student body . As a result, the parameters of this essay are typically quite broad. Applicants may write about any relevant community or experience. Here are some examples of communities you could discuss:

The idea is known by several other names, including "diversity without fragmentation" and "unity without uniformity" .

According to historical records, this concept was first used by the indigenous people of North America around 400–500 BC. The phrase may also be much older, evolving with societies and civilizations. Additionally, it is a constant fact that people are highly diverse by nature. Conflicts consequently easily develop as a result of these differences.

The phrase "unity in diversity" is rather intriguing from a grammatical standpoint. This is due to the statement's oxymoron construction, which combines the words "unity" and "diversity" . My house is in a gated community where people with different religions, castes, creeds and languages live together. But at every festival, all the people of the apartment gather to celebrate the festival, whether it be Diwali, Christmas, Pongal, Onam or Ramzan, which gives me a feeling of unity in our diversity.

“Mom, I wish I looked like you.”

Whitney Johnson, BYU’s associate athletic director, recalls saying this to her white mother after experiencing bullying as the daughter of a Black father. In remarks during Black History Month at Brigham Young University, “Connected to Each Other Through the Family of God,” Johnson shared the following turning point in her journey.

“It wasn’t until I fully understood my identity as a daughter of God that I could begin to comprehend what it meant for me to be Black.”

Campuses like BYU have been working for years to craft diversity initiatives aligned with religious values and teachings. Now that conventional DEI initiatives have been subject to heightened scrutiny across the nation, diversity innovations at faith-based schools merit additional examination.

To support this ongoing conversation, the Deseret News analyzed the websites of the diversity offices at the largest faith-based colleges and universities in America (housed in offices of “multicultural affairs” or “intercultural engagement” or “community belonging” or “diversity, equity and inclusion”). In addition to Brigham Young University, Deseret News examined the diversity language employed by the 10 largest evangelical universities , including Liberty, Baylor and Pepperdine, and the 10 largest Catholic universities , including Georgetown, DePaul and Notre Dame.

Are there unique ways these schools are talking about diversity compared with secular campuses? The following seven patterns stood out across these 25 schools’ diversity websites, presented here as a contribution to the ongoing national conversation about innovating DEI initiatives in a positive direction.

1. A common identity of intrinsic worth, value and dignity

As a Catholic university, St. John’s describes its commitment “to ensure that we welcome and celebrate the intrinsic worth of all members of our community.”

“Our faith cherishes the sacred dignity of every human being,” Pepperdine states . “As a Catholic, Jesuit university, Marquette recognizes and cherishes the dignity of each individual regardless of age, culture, faith, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, language, disability or social class,” the university states — further describing their intent to promote “the utmost reverence” for students’ “human dignity.”

“Our values call on us to continue to treat each other with respect, understanding and dignity,” states Georgetown, likewise pointing to inspiration from “Catholic and Jesuit principles of respect for the dignity of all.” Dayton also points in its diversity encouragement to “Catholic teaching about the human dignity of every person,” such as “Society as a whole must respect, defend and promote the dignity of every human person, at every moment and in every condition of that person’s life.”

Dayton goes further in emphasizing its “conviction that every person has innate dignity because all people are made in the image and likeness of God.” Abilene Christian likewise aspires to foster a “culture that celebrates every individual as created uniquely in God’s image.”

“Our identity is based on this understanding,” the school states , “and our relationship with others centers around the image of God present in each of us, giving all equal worth, dignity and belovedness.”

“We prize the uniqueness of all persons as God’s creatures,” Notre Dame states , based on religious teachings about a society “in which all persons possess inherent dignity as children of God.”

“We believe that all people, without exception, bear the image of God and have been designed to reflect His love and creativity,” Grand Canyon University states . BYU likewise declares , “We are united by our common primary identity as children of God.”

2. An appreciation for the rich diversity of creation

Baylor aspires to develop students who better understand “the complex diversity of God’s creation.” Abilene Christian expresses “appreciation for the differences expressed in each of us by God’s intentional design.”

Azusa Pacific declares that “scripture reveals the Kingdom of God as multinational, multigenerational, multiethnic, and multilingual,” citing text from Revelation 7 — ”After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb.”

“Jesus sought out and welcomed all people into the Kingdom of God,” Notre Dame states , “the gentile as well as the Jew, women as well as men, the poor as well as the wealthy, the slave as well as the free, the infirm as well as the healthy.”

California Baptist University encourages students, faculty and staff to be “world Christians who recognize, celebrate, and draw upon the wealth of multicultural and multiethnic diversity,” while being “thankful for the blessings that these God-given differences can bring in this life and in eternity.”

Many schools likewise emphasized the value of students preparing for something like “lives of purpose, service, and leadership in a pluralistic society” (Pepperdine), for “citizenship in complex global communities” (High Point) and to be “trained champions for Christ, ready for their calling” (Liberty).

“Working to understand and respect that which makes each of us unique is an essential part of a college education and part of our Jesuit mission,” Fordham states . “As a Christ-centered community,” Azusa Pacific states the school “aspires to elevate diversity, equity, and inclusion” as what they call “Kingdom distinctives.”

Not all Christian schools were equally eager to demonstrate diversity bona fides. Although celebrating its founders’ wish “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education,” Hillsdale College raises caution about “succumbing to the dehumanizing, discriminatory trend of so-called ‘social justice’ and ‘multicultural diversity,’” which the school says “judges individuals not as individuals, but as members of a group and which pits one group against other competing groups in divisive power struggles.”

“We do diversity biblically,” Liberty qualifies , emphasizing the fostering of “an inclusive environment that represents the Body of Christ.”

3. The educational value of different perspectives

Many schools underscore the centrality of the “search for truth,” which according to Pepperdine, requires a critical thinking “characterized by the ability to empathetically imagine perspectives and worldviews other than our own.”

That same pursuit of truth benefits from “the convergence of viewpoints, backgrounds and ideas,” Grand Canyon states . “Therefore, we provide an environment where learners can openly discuss and debate to gain understanding.”

Liberty calls the university a “crossroads for individuals with differing points of view and life experiences,” with Boston College aspiring for “a climate where diverse perspectives can coexist and thrive.” High Point describes their university success as resting upon making space for “a multitude of opinions, ideas, and beliefs,” emphasizing that all members of their campus community “play a meaningful role in gifting our campus community with a diversity of identities, thoughts, beliefs, and perspectives.”

“We value and embrace the variety of individual characteristics, life experiences and circumstances, perspectives, talents, and gifts of each member of the community and the richness and strength they bring to our community,” BYU states . Notre Dame likewise says , “Christians have found their life together enriched by the different qualities of their many members, and they have sought to increase this richness by welcoming others who bring additional gifts, talents and backgrounds to the community.”

“Committed to the unfettered pursuit of truth under the mutually illuminating powers of human intelligence and Christian faith,” Marquette states , “we are open to all who share our mission and seek the truth about God and the world.”

“We welcome and benefit enormously from the diversity of seekers within our ranks, even as we freely choose and celebrate our own Catholic identity,” the school continues. Baylor describes itself as a university “where people of all backgrounds can come together and reason together, live together, believe together, create together, learn together, work together, and grow together.”

“Together we can sharpen our intellect, broaden our worldviews, deepen our capacity for compassion, enliven our passion for learning, and expand our ability to experience and to offer the grace and peace of Christ to each other and to the world.”

“All members of our campus community bring their own cultures, unique talents, skills, and perspectives that, combined together, are DePaul,” states the university, further describing the “unique history, experience and culture” of every student, staff and faculty, along with the “unique perspectives” they each bring as “infinitely valuable.”

4. Seeking unity amidst diversity

Grand Canyon states their community “thrives on diversity” even as they “strive to unite individuals from varied backgrounds, cultures and life journeys” as they “stand as one in Christ.”

“Solidarity demands that we strive to overcome fragmentation and separation to see the deeper unity we share with all people,” states Notre Dame. Pepperdine aspires towards “unifying God’s diverse humanity.”

“We do not simply offer an accommodating space of toleration,” Baylor clarifies . “We seek to practice reconciliation.” Samford likewise describes their campus as aspiring “to reflect God’s reconciling and healing nature through a commitment that is rooted in love and centered on Christ to cultivate and nourish our community.”

“As a university committed to the Great Commission through Christ,” California Baptist University “ acknowledges , celebrates and works towards the unity of every nation, tribe, people and language.” BYU states , “We strive to create a community of belonging composed of students, faculty, and staff whose hearts are knit together in love.”

Brigham Young University further describes its “commitment to the truths of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ” as another unifying force on their campus — aspiring to foster “a learning environment and community of belonging that is anchored in eternal truths and the teachings of Jesus Christ and living prophets.”

Notre Dame similarly describes their “character as a community of scholarship, teaching, learning and service” as “founded upon Jesus Christ.”

“For Notre Dame, Christ is the law by which all other laws are to be judged. As a Catholic institution of higher learning, in the governance of our common life we look to the teaching of Christ.”

“As Christians,” states Liberty University, “we believe that what we have in common—our identity in Christ—frees us to celebrate what makes us different.”

5. Working to improve and reach for higher potential

”Guided by love for all members of the Pepperdine community,” the university describes working to create “fertile ground in which all Pepperdine community members know they belong and can reach the levels of spiritual, intellectual, and professional development that God has planned for them.”

Notre Dame likewise describes aspiring to build a campus community “in which all can flourish” — especially through a social context in which “we each have responsibilities to others and others have reciprocal responsibilities to us.”

St. John’s University describes aspiring for what they call “inclusive excellence” — something that Dayton and Loyola likewise ”champion” in hopes of “igniting our students’ full human potential.”

By “promoting a culture of learning, appreciation and understanding,” Marquette states their “diverse university community helps us to achieve excellence.”

“The full realization of each student’s divine potential is our central focus,” says BYU. “Our breadth of inclusiveness creates a path by which all individuals can achieve their highest potential,” states High Point. Consistently, some campus diversity offices featured titles such as the “Office of Student Success and Diversity” (Samford), and the “Office of Opportunity and Enrichment” (Liberty).

6. Seeking greater justice in a Christian way

In addition to individual-level changes, some schools describe interest in other systemic shifts. Dayton affirms that “racism and all forms of systemic oppression are in opposition to God’s will, which requires justice and love for all people as uncompromising principles.”

“The legacies of those injustices must be exposed and dismantled,” Dayton concludes, while reassuring fellow believers, “In the midst of sin, God always calls humanity to new life. Catholic practices of examination of conscience, confession of sin, atonement, and reformation of life inform our approach. We at the University of Dayton commit ourselves to this work, hoping in God’s mercy.”

“Our students aspire to build communities that are unburdened by discrimination and oppression,” states Saint Louis University, with Samford describing a “pursuit of equity and justice for all of God’s people.”

“The social teachings of the Catholic Church promote a society founded on justice and love,” Notre Dame states . Boston College likewise describes “social justice imperatives inherent in our Jesuit, Catholic heritage.”

“With a steadfast devotion to the gospel,” California Baptist University describes their commitment “to be a campus of multicultural and multiethnic diversity” and to promote “diversity, equity, and access through Biblical justice as described in Matthew .”

7. A community of love for each other and God

Grand Canyon University describes itself as motivated by a “responsibility to fulfill the Great Commandments which, simply stated, are ‘to love God and to love our neighbor’” — with “diversity,” from their vantage point, being about “creating a space that mirrors the compassion and love embodied by Jesus.”

California Baptist calls the Great Commandment “the foundation of a multicultural, multiethnic university” — describing campus efforts to “love and serve the marginalized and vulnerable of society,” as being a way to “actually love and serve Jesus Christ.”

“We seek to embody Christ’s teachings of love and inclusivity across boundaries of racial, ethnic, gender, socio-economic, religious, and other expressions of human difference,” Baylor University states — adding that “living out the calling and mission of Christ means living within diversity.”

“We are called to live in solidarity with all people,” Notre Dame states , explaining that “We are all, in one way or another, our sister’s and brother’s keeper.”

“Because of Christ’s calling to treat others as we desire to be treated,” Notre Dame continues , “We welcome all people.” Citing Ephesians 2 , the school speaks of people being “strangers and sojourners no longer.”

“We consciously create an environment of mutual respect, hospitality and warmth in which none are strangers and all may flourish.”

“As a Christian university,” Pepperdine University states , “we inherit the Israelites’ injunction to love the stranger. Jesus takes us even farther by embracing the stranger as our neighbor who is not only to be loved, but to be loved as ourselves . Likewise the apostle Paul declares that there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female in Christ.”

One goal of Abilene Christian’s “culture of diversity and inclusion” is “always treating one another with kindness, compassion, grace and mercy.” BYU likewise aspires to create a community of belonging where “all relationships reflect devout love of God and a loving, genuine concern for the welfare of our neighbor.”

India’s last election?

Narendra Modi has spent a decade remaking the country into a one-party state.

On 22 January 2024, India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, helmed the ceremony to inaugurate the newly erected temple to the Hindu god Ram at Ayodhya in northern India, the deity’s birthplace. As Indian Air Force choppers showered petals on the precincts of the temple, it was clear that the majesty of the Indian state was being used to consecrate the power of Hinduism. Commentators from India’s mainstream media, which only competes to flatter Modi, breathlessly announced the installation of the Ram temple as a “civilisational” moment with some even anointing it as the coming of the “Second Republic”.

Erected on the site of a Mughal mosque that was torn down by Hindu nationalist mobs in 1992, the Ram temple is synonymous with the ascendancy and now hegemony of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a once marginal, even fringe, party devoted to Hindu nationalism. Highways across the country were strewn with billboards featuring images of the temple. City squares, too, were drenched in saffron flags, the sacred colour for Hindus and the colour of choice for the BJP.

Against this backdrop, Modi is now confident that he is about to make history. With voting in the general election underway since 19 April, he is projected to take office for a third consecutive term. Only India’s founding prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, has accomplished this feat in the world’s largest and arguably most competitive democracy. This election is India’s largest ever, with nearly a billion people eligible to vote. Scheduled over six long weeks that coincide with rising temperatures during peak summer, the victor will be declared on 4 June.

No other Indian national election has grabbed as many global headlines and interest as this one has. In significant part, the international interest has much more to do with turbulent geopolitics than the domestic contest itself. As the West seems to have fallen out of love with China, India’s vaunted democracy has attracted new levels of attention. In terms of its economy and polity, India’s scale is truly continental.

In 2022 India replaced Britain, its erstwhile imperial master, to emerge as the fifth largest economy in the world. In 2023, India overtook China with 1.4 billion people to become the most populous country on the planet. Its regional diversity makes Europe look monochromatic, as there are more than 20 official languages spoken. With 205 million Muslims – 15.5 per cent of the population – it has the second-largest Muslim population in the world. With the youngest and largest population in the world, India can be seen as carrying the future of humanity.

Yet for all the scale and diversity, this election is in effect a plebiscite on one man. At 73, Modi has held the top Indian office for a decade already. In fact, Modi has continuously held high public office since the opening years of this century. First as the chief minister of the commercially powerful western state of Gujarat from 2001, moving to the most powerful office in 2014. It was Modi in 2014 who scripted a mandate for his BJP that committed India’s government to Hindu nationalism. His subsequent and even bigger mandate in 2019 began to overtly legislate for a Hindu-first India.

In the immediate run-up to the elections, Modi – who has not held a press conference in a decade – made himself available to select global and Indian media for carefully curated interviews. From the US magazine Newsweek to India’s largest news agency, Asia News International, in print and on screen, Modi has asserted his certitude of his victory in a serious and deliberate tone, claiming the remaking of India as his personal mission.

Nothing less than the identity of India is at stake in this election. Modi’s vision is that of a new India – or a return to its older name of Bharat, which he seeks to popularise (or even institute as the country’s official name). Even as this proposal projects notions of civilisational grandeur or a long-gone golden age, it hints at a future in which global status games and an exclusionary national culture dominate.

In fuelling such debates, Modi and his BJP are consciously signalling a new political, economic and global vision for India. Analysts and critics often describe India under Modi as an “illiberal democracy”, even an “electoral autocracy” that is in effect a “majoritarian” democracy in action. Neither quite captures the wholesale transformation of the country – rather than merely a style of rule – that is underway. In short, if modern China could give the world capitalism without democracy, could India be on the verge of giving the world a one-party state in a multi-party polity?

In May 2023, Modi inaugurated a new state-of-the-art parliament building. Built amid the devastation wrought by the Covid-19 pandemic, it symbolises Modi’s signature in stone and is the latest addition to Delhi’s monumental and imperial architecture. As Modi pirated the global left’s fixation on decolonisation at the time, he was unequivocal in declaring the new building’s inauguration as the real end of India’s long servitude, wrought first by Muslim empires and then briefly by the British. In a single stroke, Modi dismissed India’s now reviled English-educated elite as corrupt purveyors of foreign political values while directing ire at India’s besieged Muslim population.

Cast as a coronation, the pageantry projected Modi as king, as he walked down the building’s long corridor with the ritual silver sceptre, the Sengol, from the erstwhile southern Indian Hindu kingdom of Tanjore. The ritually significant sceptre had originally been given to the staunchly republican Nehru, who had housed it in a government museum. By installing it in the new parliament building, Modi signalled the coming of new sovereign arrangements.

Southern India has resolutely denied Modi any popularity, let alone the devotion that he has commanded over great swathes of northern and western India. Crucially, the new parliament building will seat close to 900 members. With its rise in population, India is set to go through a delimitation exercise by 2030 that will increase the number of constituencies. India’s demographics are regionally divided with much higher and denser population rates in the north. The new delimitation exercise is set to disempower economically superior southern India, while rewarding the economically backward north.

If his back-story of humble origins once made Modi a relatable figure, a decade on there is little that distinguishes national pride from the strident chauvinism that he embodies. Modi has transformed himself into a messianic figure who is aiming for even a bigger mandate.

It would be a categorical error to see this political contest as one between religion and secularism. Unlike in the West or even in its newly partitioned neighbour of Pakistan, neither linguistic nor religious identity was given primacy in India’s constitution of 1950 that made diversity the principle of unity. The constitution provided the blueprint for a bold future as it became the document of its democracy and the vehicle that guaranteed radical new rights to India’s citizens.

Animated by a post-colonial piety, Nehru spearheaded a political revolution that laid down democratic institutions with a commitment to a multi-religious polity and a protected economy. His era created, and was ultimately dependent on, a small elite which was zealously self-enclosed and snobbish, and the greatest beneficiary of India’s freedom. Identified today as “Lutyens’ elite” – after the architect Edwin Landseer Lutyens who gave Delhi its stunning if forbidding aesthetics of imperial power – the scornful label conveys contempt more for Nehru than for the British colonial rulers.

Modi was quick to tap in to the resentment against the liberal establishment and its elites that has fuelled what the public intellectual Pankaj Mishra has called our age of anger. Before Brexit Britain and even Trump’s Maga momentum, Modi attacked India’s so called ancien régime as corrupt and nepotistic, in order to foster a politically resurgent Hindu identity.

New India has found many votaries. A new cultural and intellectual establishment has amplified Modi’s image and message in broadsheets and television studios. Through global summits and a new and sprawling network of think tanks, an incantation of keywords advertises the ambitions of this new identity. From “Made in India” through to “Digital India” via the “India Way”, Modi’s campaign straplines have evolved over the decade; the current catchphrase is “ Viksit Bharat ”, or “Developed India”. All have prioritised the spectacle and symbolism of branding over substance. As global indices have today deemed India to be a “backsliding democracy”, Delhi – highly attuned to status – has responded by announcing its very own new metrics housed by its leading establishment think tank Observer Research Foundation.

This image-making sits alongside the criminalisation of dissent, the imprisoning of leading figures from India’s opposition and the erosion of liberty at home. But India is not in the grip of “populist authoritarianism”, as it is so often portrayed. For all the concentration and personalisation of power in Modi, a new political order akin to the party-state defines India’s latest political avatar. A party-state implies the absence of boundaries between state, society, government, party and, indeed, cadre. By contrast, modern states prize and thrive on the distinction between the different organs of government and their policing via checks and balances and, above all, seek to represent rather than overwhelm society.

As a cadre-based party, and at twice the size of China’s Communist Party, the BJP is not only the world’s largest political party, with 180 million members, but it is also one of the world’s richest parties with nearly $6bn in its coffers. With a number of other affiliates – notably the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) paramilitary body, founded in 1925 and committed to the realisation of Hindutva or political Hindu-ness with over five million volunteers – Modi helms a massive and efficient political machinery.

From vigilantes who violently police inter-faith romances to neighbourhood associations that enforce Hindu dietary practices, the boundary between culture and politics, party and state has blurred. Even though Hindu-Muslim riots have receded in the last decade, mob lynchings – especially those targeting India’s Muslims and Dalits (the caste known as “untouchables”) – have emerged as a new, violent trend.

Bureaucracy, the so-called steel frame of India, has remained supplicant, and Modi has rarely chastised the faceless but all-too-powerful civil service. Marked by a near absence of whistle-blowers, Modi’s decade of rule has witnessed a complete alignment between the ruling politicos and administrators. India’s widely regarded supreme court judges are now routinely given to making sanctimonious speeches espousing liberal values such as support of same-sex marriage, that are in stark contrast to their consequential judgements that have been largely status quo-ist.

Modi has been astute in creating a direct connection between himself and the vast populace, which is dependent on the state for its everyday existence. Enabled by technology, direct cash transfers are given for everything from food rations to vaccinations. Dubbed as “Modi’s guarantees” – which are in part bankrolled by a new centralised but indirect sales-tax regime and a universal identification programme and online banking – India’s emerging digital state is the new leviathan. The mobile phone has emerged as the key instrument which now determines the relationship between the citizen and the state. For all the dangers of a Silicon Valley-led Big Tech that is fast absorbing the state in the West, India’s digital life is invisible, intrusive and altogether statist. Yet, crucially, this new welfarism has only helped Modi’s popularity soar.

To counter the Modi personality and the emergent party-state, Nehru’s great grandson Rahul Gandhi, an MP for the opposition Indian National Congress party, has emulated Mahatma Gandhi (who is no relation) by walking the length and breadth of the country twice. Effectively the face of India’s opposition, Rahul Gandhi has – first through the Bharat Jodo Yatra (the Unity March) in the winter of 2022 and 2023 and the recently concluded Nyaya Yatra (Walk for Justice) – created a distinct campaign in Modi’s India; his supporters say the act of walking has symbolically countered violence with non-violence. Reduced to a factionalised rump, Gandhi’s Congress party wrested Karnataka, one of the richest states and the tech-hub of India, from the BJP in a consequential federal election in 2023, making it a powerful launch pad for a national campaign against Modi.

Twenty-six small and big parties, including Congress, have forged an unprecedented, united bloc against Modi. Responding to the seductive power of symbols, it has named itself after the nation: I. N.D.I. A. (Indian, National, Inclusive Development Alliance). It has a long way to go in occupying the national government, but it has nevertheless set the terms of the contest pushing economic justice as the key electoral issue. With record levels of unemployment and inequality, and surging prices of everyday goods, most media encounters with the voting public have focused on the strained economy. Aspiration, which had buzzed through the political landscape for a decade, has been replaced by a prosaic realism. This is to say, while Modi has focused on New India, the opposition has succeeded in shifting focus to the lives of Indians.

Despite support for Modi across the mainstream media, social and online media has been dominated by the opposition. In symbolically holding up the Indian constitution repeatedly in rallies, Gandhi has effectively placed rights and the future of Indians as another key choice for voters, offering an alternative to the potential advent of the party-state. After six long weeks of campaigning and as voting concludes on 1 June, the overall effect is a distinct lack of euphoria let alone an electoral wave for Modi. For all the passion and pride that Modi may incite, it’s clear that exhaustion has set in with the relentless cultural and political remaking of the country.

Narendra Modi may still be confident that he will make history, but the future of India no longer appears fated.

Close to 1,000 guests, including 275 wide-eyed, enthusiastic students, came together for the Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast on May 9 at the Palm Springs Convention Center to honor Milk's legacy and his struggle to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality.

The event also served to strengthen the partnerships of area organizations with that same goal. Stuart Milk, co-founder and executive chair of the Harvey Milk Foundation, was presented with the Global Activist Award. News anchor Peter Daut, black and LGBTQ historian/author Zaylore Stout, songstress Keisha D, DJ Galaxy, community advocate Scott Nevins and entertainer Matthew Hocutt all played a role in creating this transformative celebration.

Ron deHarte, Breakfast Coalition founder and president of Greater Palm Springs Pride, said: "Here, we're uniting supporters of equality and justice. It was Harvey's courageous work to end discrimination in the '70s that set the stage for many of the civil rights advances of today."

The event also shines a light on local youth. Students participate by writing essays about Harvey Milk. Others are invited to speak.

"They feel empowered, mingling with city officials, educators, law enforcement, media and local businesses in an affirming environment," deHarte said. "Everyone feels the impact of our next generation of leaders."

Safe Schools Desert Cities works with Gay Straight Alliances (GSAs) at more than 20 middle and high schools. They handle the logistics of getting the students to the breakfast.

"With so many youths in attendance, the LGBTQ adults can't help but be moved," said Safe Schools President Eric Ornelas. "Most were in grade school long before anything like this existed. They had no one to turn to for advice, no 'out' role models to look up to. Now, they're seeing the progress firsthand.

"These students, with their bravery and intelligence, give me so much hope for our future."

Honoree Stuart Milk is an LGBTQ rights advocate who's worked with struggling and emerging LGBTQ communities in more than 60 countries. He's also the nephew of the late Harvey Milk.

In a conversation prior to the breakfast, Stuart spoke about the need for unity. "Minority groups are the enemy of communities that want to take away our rights and separate us. We're always subject to the majority's tyranny," he said. "As my uncle emphatically stated, 'You may not be on their shopping list today, but you'll definitely be on their shopping list.' That's why it's critical that we understand each other's struggles and ask, 'How can we provide support within the LGBTQ community?'"

Stuart also provided a global perspective. "We have countries that are going backwards, re-criminalizing homosexuality and enforcing draconian laws. Most people still live in places where it's illegal or socially unacceptable to be LGBTQ. And our own LGBTQ youth in this country are five times more likely to be homeless. So, the battle never ends."

At the breakfast, Monika Ujkic from Shadow Hills High School in Indio was honored as this year's Outstanding GSA Advisor. Ujkic thinks it's important for schools to have a visible GSAs, so "students know they have a place to go and people that provide support." As an advisor for 11 years, Ujkic has helped plan events like Club Rush, National Coming Out Day and the Safe Schools' prom.

"We did a clothing drive for The Center's queer and trans closet and provided 'pride gear' to our students, like bracelets, flags and shirts." About the breakfast, Ujkic said: "We're here every year. Students love seeing the LGBTQ flags and look forward to going on stage. And they really love the great food."

One of more than 50 corporate sponsors, the Coachella Valley Firebirds were honored to support the breakfast. A Firebirds pillar is maximizing the community's access to hockey, and that includes the LGBTQ community.

"The Firebirds had an amazing time at Pride last year, with our 'Hockey is for Everyone' float. We'll be back!" said Andrew Mason, senior director of community relations. "We've donated funds from worn player jerseys to support our LGBTQ youth and will continue that program. This amazing community has welcomed our team with open arms."

Ruth Hill, vice president of finance, said: "Being at the breakfast was a privilege. We all felt emboldened. Milk's heartfelt retelling of his uncle's vision touched me deeply, as did the words of students who were awarded scholarships."

Reflecting on the breakfast, Stuart said: "Occasions like this still play a vital role. My Uncle Harvey believed in the power of visibility and how staying out of sight keeps us from succeeding. Even in places like Palm Springs and at events like this, someone will witness the community support and say, 'maybe it's time I come out.' And that's why we need to keep celebrating our diversity … without exception."

Also recognized at the Breakfast were Frank Figueroa, Ed.D., who received the Leadership Award. He serves as the first openly gay city councilmember in the city of Coachella.\

Fernanda Telles-Quintero from Coachella Valley High School received the Outstanding Youth Scholarship. She will pursue a career in film production.

Edwardo Gallardo received the Burton/May Scholarship Award. Jessica Collins received the Burton/May Pride Award.
