Speech Sound Homework- Tips for Promoting Home Carryover in Articulation Therapy

Source: quickmeme.com

Children often have social studies, spelling or math homework on a daily, if not weekly basis. Why? Because educators know the importance of reinforcing difficult concepts outside of the classroom is just as important as inside. Further, this can help involve parents in the process. Speech therapy should be thought of similarly. Although a specific skill might be taught in a structured lesson during the day doesn’t mean it can’t be reinforced outside of therapy as well. “ Homework” might not be graded but the idea is the same; children should take home speech sound targets or techniques for activities at home not only to improve but to involve parents in as well.

Make a folder, book, box or other consistent means of organizing and sharing speech homework for each child on your caseload. Children like objects. Something to call their own, get invested in, be responsible for and usually, to decorate. Why not create a special “speech folder,” “speech notebook” or “speech box” for the child’s target sounds and activities? This can travel home nightly or on weekends and include a section for children and parents to initial or mark to indicate they’ve done the work. First, it’s important to involve the child in the process by letting them decorate and assemble the tool. Then, provide high praise and rewards for returning and maintaining it – stickers work wonders!

Inside the speech activity book or box, create the following with the child:

1.)   The target sound(s) in articulation therapy or new words from language lessons. Draw it, doodle it, spell it out.

2.)   Target words. What are they working on?

3.)   Tips and tricks. What reminders have you given the child about that sound and the placement of their articulators?

4.)   Carryover activities or specific tasks, progress notes or pages to share with parents.

Source: etsy.com

By sending the box home, this tool can accomplish a few things:

  • Promote parent involvement by highlighting and separating “speech work” from other work
  • Encourage children to be invested and responsible for their learning. By telling children that the notebook or box is important to bring, look for and maintain, they are accountable and invested.
  • Organize and prioritize current speech sound targets. By updating the box regularly and checking to see what’s there, only the essential target items should be present.

Source: blog.meegenius.com

Warn parents ahead of time that the folder or box will be coming home so they know to look for it. Also, encourage them to write down questions they may have for you inside the notebook. Communication between SLPs and parents shouldn’t be limited to just IEP meetings. Parents should be encourage to be active in the process and will likely enjoy a few tips and tricks for helping develop their child’s speech and language at home.

If a take-home material doesn’t seem to work for you kiddo, try emailing some websites to parents who might like the paper-less route. Direct them to online games, printout or activities you might find helpful for them to reinforce at home. Similarly you can snap a picture of what you and the child worked on during the day and email that, allowing parents and children to discuss it.

Getting started guide

Each worksheet comes with 16 words. You can either print the sheet out and write on it directly, or  laminate it for reuse. The cards can easily be cut into flashcards as well.

Have the child practice lip and tongue placement.

Practice the sound in isolation multiple times. Give the child a star for each attempt.

Work on syllables by combining the middle letter with each of the outer vowels. Switch the order of the letter with the vowels to practice initial, medial, and final syllables (ra, ar, ara, etc).

Every time the child says the target word make a star in 1 of the 5 circles at the bottom of the card.

Use the chart to see the average age a child produces certain english sounds. This is based off of research published in 2018. Click on the letter to jump to the worksheets or scroll down to see the worksheets in alphabetical order.

articulation carryover homework

Hey Hey Hey SLPs! This week I hope to empower you a little bit with some easy activities that you can do for some of your students who are working on articulation carry over.  One of the pieces to that puzzle is keeping the kids motivated. The theme song for this week has to be, Imagine Dragons “Make me a Believer”. Really, we got to get those kids motivated to believe that they can gradually get their sound and conversation.

In this episode you’ll hear:

  • Make a conversation script of a conversation your students would be having on campus, or in their community.
  • Use How-To YouTube videos with your students’ sounds
  • Use wordless short videos to have students create dialogue, summarize the video, answer wh-questions,etc

Articulation Carryover Activities & Homework Sheets

Do you have students on your caseload working on carrying over their speech sounds to conversation? It can be a difficult stage of therapy and at times can feel like progress has slowed down. This resource has been specifically designed for this stage, and helping children transfer their hard work in therapy into success in everyday conversations. With over 100 pages, there are handouts for teachers and parents to help support the child in their everyday speech, as well as resources for clinicians to use with clients. The print and go nature of these pages makes it time efficient, while still being able to be tailored to your student’s needs.

Description

Do you have students who really struggle to carryover their sounds outside of the speech room, but you have NOTHING to give to parents and teachers to help?

Carryover of speech sounds into spontaneous speech is the ultimate goal for SLP’s working with children who have speech sound disorders. This NO-PREP resource covers all aspects of carryover in therapy, at home, and at school so that you can be proactive in achieving this last step.

Containing over 100 pages, this resource gives SO MANY options for parents, teachers, and SLPs , depending on the child’s age and needs. It is specifically geared towards the final step of transfer and generalization of speech sounds. Broken down into six areas, this packet aims to help students, teachers, and parents engage in the therapy process to help those sounds transfer.

The six areas include:

➊ — Carryover sheets: 28 pages of different worksheets for documenting how often a target sound is transferring. Includes calendars, graphs, daily tally sheets, and 5-minute speech challenges. ➋ — Carryover handouts: 7 pages handouts that explain what speech carryover is, things that you should and shouldn’t say, and ideas for carryover in the home. ➌ — For the classroom: 17 pages that specifically focus on increasing carryover in the classroom. It includes visuals, classroom reinforcers, and sheets to focus on curriculum-based words. ➍ — 100 challenges: 23 pages of worksheets that sets the goal to say your sound in conversation 100 times over the week. ➎ — Self-monitoring: 25 pages dedicated to your student being able to monitor and plan their speech. It includes goal setting, graphs, choosing keywords, and self-evaluation. ➏ — Carryover rewards: 10 pages that focus on working towards charts and badges.

The majority of these worksheets have blank spaces for the SLP to write in the child’s target sound, length of practice, and frequency of practice. This allows you to individualize the prescribed dose for home and class carryover.

APPLICATION TO EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE: This packet considered the research when putting materials together. A really interesting, and in-depth article by Ertmer & Ertmer (1998) titled Constructivist strategies in phonological intervention facilitating self-regulation for carryover was very beneficial for thinking about a framework for carryover.

5 Simple Strategies for Articulation Carryover

articulation carryover homework

Parents and teachers can model accurate productions. Parents can choose books that contain lots of their child's sounds to read out loud at home. When a child produces a sound in error, a teacher or parent can recast the sentence to model the accurate sound. Example, child says, "I want the wed one." Adult says, "Oh you want the red piece?" This brings attention to accurate productions without taxing the social-emotional domain. It's also a great way for children to start noticing their speech sound errors. دانلود آهنگ امو باند تو دلی دانلود آهنگ جدید

4 Tried-and-True Strategies for Effective Carryover in Articulation Therapy

  • By Kim Lewis
  • July 31, 2023

Kids often get stuck in therapy. They can make a sound (or sounds) in structured activities but need help to move beyond that. The answer to this dilemma is they are lacking in CARRYOVER. Implementing carryover activities in articulation therapy is essential, and they don’t have to be difficult either!

kids working on carryover of their speech sounds

Try these 4 tried-and-true strategies for effective carryover in your articulation therapy sessions TODAY!

Start Early!

First thing’s first– know that you should start addressing carryover skills as soon as possible!

By implementing carryover strategies in small chunks over the entire course of a child’s therapy journey, you’re instilling self-confidence and self-belief while providing infinitely more opportunities for a child to practice targeted speech sounds!

4 Strategies for Effective Carryover of Articulation Skills

There are four tried-and-true strategies to target the carryover of articulation skills:

  • Focus on fewer words
  • Focus on one word outside of therapy
  • Practice sounds in naturally fun ways
  • Short daily practice

Focus on Fewer Words

Although this almost feels counterintuitive, working on fewer words in articulation therapy sessions has been proven to be helpful for better carryover. With fewer words, kids can learn to produce these correctly and automatically!

These correct productions will act as positive reinforcement and a confidence boost for your students. Confidence leads to children being more likely to try new things (or in this case, new words and new places!) win, win!

Focus on One Word Outside of Therapy

Select one word for your child to focus on producing correctly outside of therapy.

This strategy drastically removes the pressure off students and helps parents listen to particular speech sounds more easily. Children are also able to take more ownership when responsible for a single word vs a sound that might occur in many, many words.

Make It Personal!

Select a target word that comes up often in conversation for each student and focus on that one word outside of therapy.

It doesn’t make sense to select a random word with the child’s target sound because they just won’t say it enough in real life (think: “tallow” for /t/ or “kneel” for /l/).

Personalized Examples:

“ok” for /k/

a child’s name

“School” for sk- blend

“Football” for /f/

“Gigi” for /g/

Practice Sounds in Naturally Fun Ways

Use a game or activity that naturally incorporates your child’s targeted sound or word for lots of easy practice!

The game Guess Who has many opportunities to practice /r/

  • “Is your person a girl?”
  • “Does he have red hair?”
  • “Do you want red or blue?”

Short Daily Practice

Get parents and teachers on board!

Encourage them to designate short bits of time to work on corrections in students’ conversations each day. Five minutes is the MAX recommended time for this strategy!

EXPERT TIP: Model this type of interaction and instruction for teachers and families. You can do this in person with the child, or you can tap into technology and send a video explaining what this daily practice looks like.

Reassure adults in the child’s life that YES, they CAN devote 2-5 minutes each day to practice!

Use Resources

Premade resources are another great way to do a short daily practice with students.

This Rock Paper Scissors Carryover Game is perfect for targeting /s, z, th/ in phrases and sentences. The cards are organized into sound and position for EASY USE.

It seems like lots of students struggle with their carryover of /r/, and this Rock Paper Scissors Carryover Game addresses just that! Your students will have so much fun with these games that they won’t even realize you’re getting practically a million trials in too!

For kids with sound errors for /r, s, th, sh, ch/, this Articulation Worksheets BUNDLE is perfect! These fill-in-the-blank stories allow your students to create silly & goofy stories that they will love reading over and over again— all while practicing their articulation targets!

Speech Time Fun: Speech and Language Activities

Articulation Carryover Activities For Older Speech Students

Older speech students have been in therapy for years…we need to prepare them for life without it.  how can we do so in a fun and motivating way.

It can be so difficult to keep our older articulation students motivated.  They have heard it all  before, it is not new, they want to graduate from speech, but when they leave our rooms, they don't seem to remember the strategies we taught them.  Their teachers and parents don't see the progress we claim to see when we drill.  Once we get them mastering sounds in isolation, word, and sentence level, we need to work on conversation at a functional level.  We need to mimic what they would need to be doing and feeling and experiencing outside of our speech rooms in order for it to be effective and relevant.  I am going to share with you my favorite ways to work on carryover that don't require much prep and are tons of fun (hey…my blog's name is Speech Time Fun!).   (Disclaimer: This post contains Amazon Affiliate links)

Role Playing:

Act out the various social situations they might experience.   Phone conversations, ordering food from a restaurant, ordering food in the cafeteria, conversation at recess or gym, debates, and even practice classroom conversations.  What kind of social interactions would they have in a classroom?  Presentations, asking and answering questions,  group projects, and responding to text-based questions in a guided reading group situation.  That is why you can even bring in academically relevant texts to practice reading out loud and answering questions.  You can easily find texts at NewsELA and Readworks.org  Want others?  You can use my Articulation Stories pack!

Is carryover a struggle for your older speech students? I'm sharing some ideas for articulation carryover activities in this post to help them find success.

You can use props and have students role play that they are going to a restaurant.  No prep required since they can make their own menus that incorporate their target sounds!  Just grab a file folder and done!  This is great if it is a mixed group too because you can incorporate vocabulary too.

Is carryover a struggle for your older speech students? I'm sharing some ideas for articulation carryover activities in this post to help them find success.

Above, you can see we had fun making a silly menu, why be serious in speech?!

Humor and Jokes:

One way to elicit excitement and confidence it to incorporate jokes.  You can easily grab any children's joke book or even find fun ones online like HERE at Enchanted Learning.  Students can make their own joke books that have their sounds.  They can practice telling them and explaining why they are funny.  They can leave your speech room with confidence to tell their friends joke and be a jokester!  We used a file folder again to make it look like a book.

Storytelling:

“What did you do this weekend?”  Our students struggle to be able to relay that information using their sounds especially when they are excited to tell us!  Practice personal narratives and storytelling.  You can use Rory's Story Cubes and my Summarizing Graphic Organizer Freebie and have fun telling silly stories using their target sounds.
