When it comes to creating an entertaining and memorable speech for a birthday party, you might not be sure how to begin. Here are a few tips for creating a birthday speech, whether it’s for your birthday or that of a colleague, friend or loved one.

Is it for your birthday or someone else’s birthday?

This will make a big difference in how you create this speech. If it’s for yourself, the speech will include thanking people for attending, sharing your memories (successes and challenges), mentioning the impact of your friends and family, and looking to the future. For example, if you are delivering a 50th birthday speech, you will cover important events and people in your life, thank people who have helped you along the way (parents, spouse, other family and friends, etc) and speak about plans for the future. It’s a big day of your life, so you’ll want to think about, plan and write a birthday speech well in advance. 

If a speech is directed at someone else who’s celebrating their birthday, the speech will be a bit different. In this case, it’s to honour that person and help them celebrate. This could include an overview of their life, major achievements and milestones, and best wishes for the future. Everybody loves funny birthday speeches, so it’s always a good idea to include some humour. The best way to do this is to tell funny stories about the person. If it’s a birthday speech for a best friend, it could include funny things that happened to you. 

21st birthday speech

Typically, this is delivered at a 21st birthday party by one of the parents or a close friend. The speaker reflects on the 21 years and offers best wishes for the future. What Do You Say In A Birthday Speech If You Are A Parent?

If you are the parent, are you hosting the event for your son or daughter? There are certain milestone birthdays that a parent might still be likely to host, such as the 16th or 18th birthday.

• 30th Birthday:  Also called the “dirty thirty,” this is a fun milestone birthday to celebrate what many see as the end of their youth. Speeches and toasts for this birthday typically include birthday quotes about getting older and recognition of the next stage of life. And thirdly… To all of you beautiful people standing here before me today. How can I not enjoy having each and every one of you in my life. I mean how lucky can a man get to have such funny, supportive and caring friends. Blessed is the word I use to describe having all of you be apart of my journey through life. Thank you all for being here today. Its is honestly an honour to celebrate this day with all of you here tonight.

I suppose the main reason why we all have a little laugh and look forward to his humor is that he always likes to remind us that life is not meant to be taken too seriously and that laughter helps to keep us grounded. To this day, I have incorporated this philosophy into my life and I am sure all of us look forward to the energy and humor that he gives us.

Married to his high school sweetheart for 28 years, and with two pretty awesome kids, Ha-Ha. Sorry but I had to add that in. He has shown to be the best role model any family could ask for.

He has always been one to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and is not shy to have a casual drink when in good company.

Lucky for me, I have been extremely fortunate to have all of my nearest and dearest to me all here tonight and I have to say, I wouldn’t want to have tonight any other way. Although it may be the wine talking, I must say that I love each and everyone of you here tonight… Especially the caterer, the food served here has been delicious! Ha-Ha! Now let’s all embarrass ourselves by having a few more drinks and getting on the dance floor!

Ladies and Gentlemen. I would first like to thank you all for coming to my daughter .. .. 21st birthday party tonight. At the time I said ok love and walked into the kitchen a little shaken and nervous. Not because I had to give a speech at her big birthday party, but due to my ever-increasing age, I’d forgotten to organise the party in the first place.

So, my second thank you comes to my wife, and .. .. mother B.Person, for always remembering to do the things I forget, and being, as I’m sure you will all agree, a great mother to our child/children.

So as I sat down to write my speech, I wrote it and re-wrote it. Then I made a few more adjustments to it to make it shorter, had B.Person check it, then edited and re-wrote it again myself. And as you can see, there is no DJ here tonight; that’s because after all the alterations it is still over two hours long.

But on a serious note now, .. .. has turned 21, a milestone in her life, and ours as parents. To see her grow from the beautiful, small and fragile child I first saw in the hospital, 21 years ago to the day, to the strong and independent woman that stands before us now. She is smart, beautiful and has worried us a few times over the years with the choice of boyfriends that she has brought home, but .. .., we are all her today to say we all love you and wish you every happiness in whatever you do next.

.. .. has brought into mine and her mothers’ life more than we could have ever expected after getting more than our monies worth at the cinema that time – only joking. But really, you have filled our lives with a happiness that cannot be measured by any scale man has. Shown us more love than we knew possible and you have made us the happiest parents/parent that there is – thank you.

So good luck in your life with boyfriend/husband (or in the search), and I hope that one day your children will bring you as much happiness as you have brought to us/me.

Just remember this .. ..,

MADELEINE McCann’s parents have posted a heartfelt message to their missing daughter on her milestone 21st birthday today.

Kate and Gerry wrote: "Happy 21st Birthday Madeleine. Still missing. Still missed. Still looking."

The message was shared on the official Find Maddie Campaign Facebook page.

It was accompanied by one of the last photographs taken of the tot as a three-year-old.

Madeleine was pictured beaming in a white sun hat and pink dress, with the word “Hope."

The website is viewed by thousands of supporters across the world.

Earlier this month Kate and Gerry shared a heartbreaking update on the 17th anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance.

The couple said their daughter's "absence still aches" in a touching social media post.

It read: "It's 17 years since Madeleine was taken from us,'

"It's hard to even say that number without shaking our heads in disbelief.

The prime suspect in the case is 47-year-old German national and convicted sex offender  Christian Brueckner .

He is currently serving a prison sentence for raping a woman in Praia da Luz in 2005, and is suspected of further attacks in the area between 2000 and 2017.

Brueckner is  currently appearing in a German court  accused of a string of rapes and indecent exposure allegations uncovered during the investigation into Maddie.

He denies the claims against him and the trial continues.

When did Madeleine McCann disappear?

The tot disappeared on May 3, 2007, when her family were on holiday in  Praia da Luz , in the Algarve, Portugal.

Parents Gerry and Kate  left their three children – including toddler twins  Sean and Amelie  – asleep in their apartment  while they ate at a tapas bar  - 120 metres away.

When Kate returned to check on the kids at around 10pm that evening, she discovered that Madeleine was not in her bed and was missing.

In September of that year, Gerry and Kate, both doctors, were sensationally named as "arguidos" by Portuguese police.

The following summer  the McCanns were cleared  by investigators in Portugal who declared they had exhausted all avenues in the case.

In March 2024, it was confirmed that British detectives looking for Maddie would receive a further £100,000 funding to help their investigation — on top of the £13million already provided by the government since 2011.

What theories are there about Madeleine's disappearance?

• In June 2020, it was revealed that a  German prisoner was the prime suspect  in the case, with evidence showing  he was in and around the Praia da Luz area  at the time.
• Investigative journalist and ex-police officer Mark Williams-Thomas believes Madeleine  left the apartment in search of her parents .
• Ex-police chief Goncalo Amaral has claimed  MI5 helped cover-up Madeleine McCann’s body  after her parents accidentally killed her.
• Veteran investigative journalist  Danny Collins believes the toddler could not have been snatched from the room . He is convinced she left the apartment in Praia da Luz looking for her parents before being abducted and possibly sold to gypsies.
• Former Scotland Yard detective  Colin Sutton says the “most likely and credible scenario”  for Madeleine’s disappearance is a targeted kidnap by child traffickers - possibly to replace some grieving parents’ own dead child.
• In the 2019 Netflix documentary  The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann , investigators point out that the coastal resort of Praia da Luz would make it easier for traffickers to escape on a boat and travel to North Africa. The resort is also only 90 minutes drive from the border with Spain.
• A local resident in the  Netflix film pointed out that the Algarve has many wells , some of which are 100ft deep. They suggested Madeleine could have wandered out of the apartment and fallen to her death.
• Parents Gerry and Kate have been forced to confront rumours around their daughter's disappearance, with the  couple vowing to fight "tooth and nail" if they are ever prosecuted over leaving their children alone. 
• In July, 2017, Madeleine parents failed in their bid to silence ex Portuguese cop  Goncalo Amaral 's over his claims they  faked their daughter's kidnapping to cover up her death.
• Another theory is that Madeleine was taken as part of a bungled burglary in which an intruder panicked and snatched her after she woke up. While Scotland Yard looked into this theory it has always been dismissed by cops in Portugal since nothing else was taken from the apartment.
• US think tank The Rutherford Institute said  Madeleine could have been taken by a sex trafficking gang  after studying how kids are abducted and abuse in the sex industry. The institute's John Whitehead also believes these gangs could be aided by "predator cops" - although there is no evidence suggesting Portuguese police were involved in assisting with Madeleine's kidnapping.
• In 2019 Portuguese police were said to think Madeleine was  kidnapped by a surgical-mask wearing man who is known to the cops , after a tip off from Scotland Yard.
