Some of the greatest movies of this era are science fiction films that have romantic elements, with some films focusing on displaying what happens when love and technology (and often, fantasy) mix. Fans looking for romantic sci-fi movies to watch during date night or just on a chill day can turn to award-winning classics and underrated gems that blend these two genres flawlessly.

The best sci-fi romance films explore novel and often fantastical concepts and how they influence, create, and change the way people (and other sentient beings) love each other. The ones fans of the genre shouldn’t miss include classics like Blade Runner and even animated films like Wall-E .

15 'Vanilla Sky' (2001)

Director: cameron crowe.

David and Sofia walking in Vanilla Sky

One of the most iconic movies to use the overdone trope , "it's all a dream," Vanilla Sky revolves around the wealthy publisher David Aames (an underrated Tom Cruise character), whose life is forever changed after a disastrous car accident. A facial disfigurement and an encounter with a beautiful woman, Sofia Serrano ( Penélope Cruz ), force him to rethink and rebuild his once-perfect life. In the process, he realizes that his reality may not be as real as he thought.

An eccentric blend of mystery, sci-fi, and romance, Vanilla Sky heavily relies on David and Sofia's relationship to highlight the inconsistencies in the protagonist's bizarre reality. It's his experiences with Sofia that compel David to delve deeper into the strange occurrences around him, which soon lead to the big twist ending.

14 'Passengers' (2016)

Director: morten tyldum.

Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence in Passengers

Director Morten Tyldum ’s Passengers takes place on an interstellar ship carrying people to a colony. When two people – Jim Preston ( Chriss Pratt ) and Aurora Lane ( Jennifer Lawrence ) – mysteriously wake up from hibernation 90 years earlier than they should have, their quest to discover what went wrong leads to a dark truth about their fates. The two must come to terms with their new path and eventually find romance in their unexpected situation.

While Passengers is far from being a perfect film, it does manage to blend together science fiction, romance, comedy, drama , and even survival thriller genres in a commendable way. Jim and Aurora’s relationship is exciting thanks to the striking backdrop that is space and the intriguing challenge they must face, with their main enemy being time itself.

13 'Another Earth' (2011)

Director: mike cahill.

Rhoda leaning on John in Another Earth

A grossly underrated sci-fi movie , director Mike Cahill 's Another Earth follows the story of Rhoda Williams ( Brit Marling ), a young woman whose life is turned upside down after she causes a car accident that kills a mother and her child. After her time in prison, Rhoda obsesses over the other Earth – the appearance of which partly caused the accident – and enters an essay contest where the winner gets a ticket to the planet. Along the way, Rhoda tries to make peace with her past by reconciling with the man who lost his wife and child in the accident.

What Rhoda (and likely viewers) never expects is to fall for the man, John Burroughs ( William Mapother ), and she's soon caught in a romantic relationship built on a lie. The complexity and emotional depth of this relationship make everything else fade into the background. Another Earth manages to use the grand sci-fi element of a duplicate planet appearing out of nowhere as a backdrop for an intimate and brilliantly twisted love story.

12 'The Lobster' (2015)

Director: yorgos lanthimos.

a man and a woman running through the field

Director Yorgos Lanthimos ’ The Lobster is a bizarre and beautiful film (and among the best dystopian romance movies) that takes place in a bleak future where people who are single are sent to a hotel and given 45 days to find a partner – those that don’t are turned into an animal of their choice and sent into the woods. Amidst the pressure and stressful environment, David ( Colin Farrell ) finds himself falling for someone he shouldn’t.

After he meets someone simply called the “Short Sighted Woman” ( Rachel Weisz ), they bond over their mutual vision impairment. What transpires between them is nothing short of a wacky, comedic, and heartfelt ride that’s intertwined with the very systems they’re trying to destroy. The duo must overcome their differences in The Lobster to survive the strange dystopian world that just won't let their kind of love thrive.

11 'I Origins' (2014)

Ian and Sofi looking at a camera in I Origins

I Origins is centered on the molecular biologist, Ian Gray ( Michael Pitt ), who is obsessed with studying everything there is to know about the human eye. When he meets the carefree model Sofi Elizondo ( Astrid Bergès-Frisbey ), the two fall in love. A tragic accident leaves her dead and Ian embarks on a mission to prove the one thing Sofi always believed in (and that the two disagree on) – reincarnation is real.

Directed by Mike Cahill, I Origins is a beautiful attempt at merging science, romance, and spirituality – the film manages to highlight the importance of love and connection on a grand scale. While its message gets a little murky, and the film definitely doesn't base on actual science , it does manage to be a moving portrait of love and loss, as well as the lengths people will go to in the face of incomprehensible heartache.

10 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' (2006)

Director: mamoru hosoda.

the-girl-who-leapt-through-time

Among the best non-Ghibli animated movies , director Mamoru Hosoda 's The Girl Who Leapt Through Time tells the story of an average high school student, Makoto Konno, whose life becomes spectacular when she discovers she can time travel. Using her newfound power without much thought, Makoto sets out to fix her past mistakes and improve the lives of those around her. When she finds herself falling for her best friend, Chiaki Mamiya, things get complicated.

Makoto and Chiaki's messy relationship is inextricably linked with the film's take on the popular sci-fi topic, time travel. Several twists and turns centered on their romance are based on time-traveling mistakes the duo makes over the course of the film. This all culminates in a satisfying ending that makes the entire twisty fiasco worth watching.

9 'About Time' (2013)

Director: richard curtis.

Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams as Tim and Mary about to kiss in About Time

About Time is an often-overlooked film about time travel. Directed by Richard Curtis , it follows Tim Lake’s ( Domhnall Gleeson ) experiences after learning that the men in his family can travel back through time. He soon has fun figuring out what he can do to change his past, but soon learns that every action has unpredictable consequences for the future.

Through it all, Tim discovers numerous things about time travel with Mary ( Rachel McAdams ), a woman he quickly falls in love with after a chance encounter. As Tim and Mary’s relationship progresses, the protagonist begins to understand that time travel doesn’t make him (and those he loves) invincible. About Time focuses on these profound and emotional moments that make life worth living , as well as the small romantic things that make up a great relationship.

8 'Edward Scissorhands' (1990)

Director: tim burton.

Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands

Often cited alongside the most iconic 90s movies , Edward Scissorhands is an award-winning classic directed by Tim Burton . It tells the tale of the eponymous protagonist (played by Johnny Depp ), who was left unfinished by his creator and finds himself welcomed into the suburban home of a well-meaning family.

Directed by Tim Burton, the romance that blossoms between Edward and the family’s daughter Kim is critical to the story . His relationship with her further emphasizes both his astounding strengths and unique shortcomings. He may be an incomplete science experiment, but Edward is just as capable of love as an ordinary person. Edward Scissorhands is not just an eccentric love story, but an ode to being different.

Edward Scissorhands

7 'arrival' (2016), director: denis villeneuve.

Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner hugging in Arrival.

Director Denis Villeneuve ’s Arrival revolves around Louise Banks ( Amy Adams ), a linguist who is chosen by the government to assist them in communicating with aliens. The extraterrestrial creatures have complex language, which governments from around the globe are raising to decipher as tensions rise between world leaders. Alongside Louise through this journey is the physicist, Ian Donnelly ( Jeremy Renner ), as the two of them courageously work with the aliens to understand what they want.

A shockingly brilliant twist soon reveals there’s more to their relationship than meets the eye, with their romance inextricably linked to a tool that can change the planet. It's impossible to talk about their love story in Arrival without spoiling a crucial part of the plot , but audiences can go into the film confident that it will deliver the unexpected.

6 'Gattaca' (1997)

Director: andrew niccol.

Uma Thurman as Irene and Ethan Hawke as Vincent in Gattaca

Gattaca ’s world is one where eugenics has been normalized and people’s DNA defines their future. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol , the widely acclaimed movie follows Vincent Freeman ( Ethan Hawke ), one of the numerous born as “In-Valids.” Since he isn’t a “Valid,” Vincent has little to no hope of fulfilling his lifelong ambition to go to space. While coming up with a way to make his dream come true, he meets the Valid, Irene Cassini ( Uma Thurman ). She may be a Valid, but she’s hindered by a mistake from before she was born that increases her chances of heart failure.

Their budding romance isn’t just engrossing, but it also further underscores the messed up injustices that Vincent and Irene go through on a daily basis. Their love story is infused with tragedy and a technology that's far too plausible, making it even more terrifying. Hawke and Thurman are an unlikely pair, but nevertheless work as a mesmerizing duo on the big screen.

Gattaca (1997)

5 'avatar' (2009), director: james cameron.

Neytiri and Jake in a Pandora forest in Avatar 2009

Director James Cameron 's Avatar is an epic sci-fi movie that sparked the massive franchise beloved by fans from around the world today. The original movie sees Jake Sully ( Sam Worthington ), a former Marine, take part in a mission on the alien planet of Pandora. It's Cameron's take on the tried and tested enemies-to-lovers film trope set against incredible futuristic technologies and a strikingly gorgeous planet.

A paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.

blade-runner-sean-young

Directed by Ridley Scott , it follows the story of the disillusioned detective Rick Deckard ( Harrison Ford ), who’s tasked with finding a group of rebellious replicants led by Roy Batty.

The protagonist’s encounter and subsequent romantic relationship with the replicant Rachael ( Sean Young ) is crucial to the story. Rachael initially thinks that she’s actually human, which eventually transforms the way Deckard sees replicants. Although it isn't the most talked about aspect of Blade Runner , Deckard and Rachael's romantic entanglement has a huge role to play in the way the story unfolds. Their powerful connection is something that still haunts Deckard in Blade Runner 2049 .

3 'Her' (2013)

Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore on a ferry in Her

Director Spike Jonze ’s Her follows the lonely letter-writer, Theodore Twombly ( Joaquin Phoenix ), who tries out a new operating system after a painful breakup. He meets the AI, Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson ), who is unbelievably fun, witty, and sweet. She transforms him in ways he never expected a virtual character could.

Lauded for being groundbreaking and provocative when it was first released, the film is still worth watching again just to see the strange but fascinating relationship between Theodore and Samantha . It’s both an intimate and somber portrait of a soft dystopia and an expansive and philosophical film that can delight and move audiences with its quiet emotional moments.

2 'Wall-E' (2008)

Director: andrew stanton.

Wall-E showing Eve a plant in WALL-E

Pixar’s Wall-E is a movie that needs no introduction. Directed by Andrew Stanton , the animated film is centered on the eponymous robot protagonist, who is left alone on a trash-covered earth with his friend cockroach. His mundane daily routines are interrupted when Eve arrives from outer space and soon, the two robots embark on an exhilarating journey that defines humankind’s future.

Eve and Wall-E are an iconic couple in large part because of the impressive way they display humanlike emotions and romantic gestures (like handholding). Pixar excels in conveying incredible human emotions through its non-human animated characters, with Wall-E and Eve being no exception. Plus, the film's adventure narrative makes it it’s impossible not to root for the adorable Wall-E and feel excitement when Eve begins to like him back.

1 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' (2004)

Director: michel gondry.

Joel and Clementine lying on the ice from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Director Michel Gondry ’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a cult classic that takes place in a world where the technology to erase memories exists. Joel Barish ( Jim Carrey ) angrily decides to remove any trace of his ex-girlfriend Clementine Kruczynski ( Kate Winslet ) from his mind, as he finds out that she has done the same to him. What follows is a mind-bending journey inside Joel’s mind, as he is forced to relive his experiences with Clementine starting from the most recent (worst) ones to the oldest (loving) moments.

The legendary film takes viewers on an original trip through the subconscious while serving as a reminder that love and heartbreak aren’t as different in value as they seem. Eternal Sunshine has a non-linear narrative structure that perfectly complements its grounded sci-fi love story , with Joel and Clementine's complicated relationship being painfully relatable.

From animated classics to films by legendary directors like John Carpenter, Spike Jonez, and Guillermo del Toro. Let's take a look at the best-ranked science fiction romance films.

Update February 4, 2024: In honor of Valentine's Day approaching, this list has been updated with more sci-fi romance movies for your viewing pleasure as well as where you can stream each title.

12 The Time Traveler's Wife (2009)

The Time Traveler's Wife

The Time Traveler's Wife

In a bit of a heartbreaking tale starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, and based on the novel by Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Traveler's Wife follows Henry, a librarian who has a gene that causes him to time travel, which, in turn, poses issues for his relationships and marriage. This is one of many films where Rachel McAdams falls in love with a time traveler, another one will appear later on this list.

True Love Has No Bounds

On the surface, much of the film is comedic, but as the film runs on, more serious themes start to take place, as younger versions of Henry show up to inform his wife of future visits and issues she can expect in the future. Boasting excellent performances from both leads, this film shows that true love has no bounds, including time itself. The film was seen as a critical failure upon release but is well-liked among viewers and has developed a bit of a cult following since. There has been a TV version made with Rose Leslie ( Game of Thrones ) and Theo James ( The White Lotus ) that was canceled after only one season . 11 The Fly (1986)

David Cronenberg Will Direct The Fly RebootIn a story from the {0}, David Cronenberg will be re-directing a new version of his 1986 film, {1}.

"Be afraid, be very afraid". These words are uttered from Veronica Quaife's (Geena Davis) mouth when she sees the man that she loves has gone from brilliantly eccentric scientist (Jeff Goldblum) to obsessed fly monster in David Cronenberg's 1986 remake of The Fly . Though the tale is horrific and heartbreaking, at its core, the film details the events of a relationship and the hardships of going through one when the person you love is slowly dying. Often thought to be an analogy of a loved one going through cancer, The Fly hits the nail on the head by portraying exactly what it feels like to go through losing someone little-by-little to sickness.

Horrific and Heartbreaking

The movie excels on every level, from story to acting to Howard Shore's booming and intimidating score. Though the film was only nominated (and won) for Best Makeup, many believe if you swapped out the "man turns into a fly" storyline with any other disease, The Fly could have won an Oscar in any category it was nominated for. Not a conventional romance, but a tragic one that shows not all love stories are meant to last. Stream on DIRECTV, or rent on Apple TV, Amazon Video, and Google Play Movies

10 Turbo Kid (2015)

turbo kid

In another post-apocalyptic world written and directed by the trio of François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell ( Summer of '84 ), a comic book fan adopts the persona and weaponry of his favorite superhero (who happens to be real), and uses his new gifts to help rescue the new friend he's falling for, a girl named Apple, who has been captured by the forces of an evil warlord.

The Need for Emotional Connection in a Lonesome Wasteland

Though the synopsis may seem kid-friendly, we assure you that this splatter-fest of a film is the furthest from it. With an amazing villain role from Michael Ironside ( Total Recall ), incredible practical effects in both gore and style, and a rockin' synth soundtrack from Le Matos , Turbo Kid is a sci-fi romance that lays heavily on the need for emotional connection in a lonesome wasteland. This is a unique movie, and as such, so is the romantic relationship in it, as it has a couple of surprising twists audiences must discover for themselves. Stream on Amazon Prime Video, fuboTV, and Peacock

9 Starman (1984)

starman

In the only true romantic film of John Carpenter's making — okay, fine, Big Trouble in Little China counts — Starman follows an alien that comes to Earth in response from an invitation found on the gold record aboard the Voyager 2 space probe. Upon arrival, the alien takes the form of a widow's husband (Jeff Bridges), and convinces Jenny (Karen Allen) to take him to his departure point.

Both Actors Are Fantastic

Only Carpenter could make a rom-com from a sci-fi concept like the one in this film: an alien comes to Earth, meets a woman and must escape the military men following him to dissect and kill him. Starman landed Bridges his third Oscar nomination for Best Actor, but Allen was also fantastic. The screenplay was written by Bruce A. Evans, the man behind the screenplay for Stand By Me , and the story inspired a short-lived TV series of the same name. Rent on Apple TV, Amazon Video, and Google Play Movies

8 Gattaca (1997)

Gattaca

Gattaca (1997)

Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, Gattaca happens in a near-time where genetics decides your future. Vincent (Ethan Hawke) decides he’s going to go to space, genetics be damned. The character is able to cheat the machines at work with the help of Eugene (Jude Law) and his perfect genetic material. It's at Gattaca that Vincent meets Irene (Uma Thurman).

The Actors Really Fell in Love While Shooting the Movie

This film is many things at once: sci-fi, noir, thriller, and a love story. Irene is intrigued by Vincent, and they fall in love the old-fashioned way, with no genetic perfection involved. Their love story adds more problems to Vincent, as he’s trying to get to space while detectives are investigating a murder at their workplace. The chemistry between the actors is off the charts, as they really fell in love while making the film, and it shows, making for a lovely, understated story mixed with all the craziness around them. 7 Love and Monsters (2020)

Love and Monsters

Love and Monsters

A surprisingly entertaining flick that was released in the midst of the pandemic, Love and Monsters follows Joel (Dylan O'Brien) as he maneuvers his way through a world overrun with mutated amphibians, insects, fish, and more, with hopes of reconnecting with Aimee (Jessica Henwick), his girlfriend he became separated from, six years prior, when the monster apocalypse started.

An Unconventional Ending to Their Romantic Story

The film has a heartfelt story, excellent special effects in both computer graphics and practical variety, and a great supporting role from Michael Rooker. This lesser-known gem also sports, according to Horror Geek Life , one of the absolute best dog/owner relationships in film, period. All that wouldn't work without O'Brien's and Henwick's performances, as they both sell a whole relationship and years of yearning through a few words and looks. The film also gets points for having an unconventional ending to its romantic story. Stream on Netflix

6 Back to the Future (1985)

back to the future

Back to the Future

We might get some flack for putting this in the romance genre, but at its core, Back to the Future 's story completely revolves around the fact that when Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) goes back in time, he disrupts the timeline and events has to save the relationship between his mother and father, in order to save his family from being erased from existing.

As Much a Romantic Comedy as a Sci-fi Film

This movie is as much a romantic comedy as a sci-fi film, and it works because of Michael J. Fox's comedic timing and commitment to the bit. Lea Thompson has chemistry with anyone, as she proved in many films, like Howard the Duck , and Crispin Glover has never looked more charming. The first film is part of one of the best trilogies of all time , and the film was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Song for "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis. Back to the Future took home the award for Best Effects, and Robert Zemeckis' masterpiece remains one of the most beloved films of all time. Stream on DIRECTV, or rent on Apple TV, Amazon Video, and Google Play Movies

5 About Time (2013)

About Time

On his 21st birthday, Tim’s (Domnhall Gleeson) father (Bill Nighy) tells him their family secret: the men in his family can time travel and go back in time. That time travel story is the starting point of About Time . When Tim meets Mary (Rachel McAdams) in a restaurant in the dark, he falls for her instantly, even before seeing her, and uses his powers to make sure they can explore their attraction. From there, the film also touches on the themes of growing up, familiar love, and death.

Each Has Their Eccentricities, but They Still Match

Gleeson and McAdams are incredible together, making a totally believable couple. As with any Richard Curtis film (who wrote Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill ), both characters have their own eccentricities but still match and work together. Once they’re a couple, Tim discovers time travel can’t solve everything. Sometimes, there’s a need for hard work, love, and deep care for everyone in your family and to live in the moment. Rent on Apple TV, Amazon Video, and Google Play Movies

4 The Shape of Water (2017)

the shape of water

The Shape of Water

Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water is a sci-fi horror romance mash-up. A new spin on The Creature from the Black Lagoon mythos, the story tells the romance of a mute custodian, Elisa Esposito (Sally Hawkins), at a high-security government laboratory who falls in love with a captured humanoid amphibian creature (Doug Jones), and decides to help him escape. Set in the backdrop of the 1950s, the film shows the beauty in those who are different at a time when things were meant to conform.

Love in Any Form

While certain audiences had a hard time understanding that the romance is between two different species, The Shape of Water is a beautiful romance about outsiders finding themselves. There was always a romantic undertone to many of the classic Universal monsters from King Kong to The Creature from the Black Lagoon , and Del Toro's film finally lets the romance play out in a true tender manner. The film wowed critics and audiences, grossing $195 million worldwide, and won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Production Design, and Best Score. Rent or Buy on AppleTV+, Vudu, or Prime Video.

3 Her (2013)

her

In the 2013 film Her , written and directed by Spike Jonze, a recently divorced, lonely writer named Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) starts spending more and more time with his operating system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. As it learns more and more about him and takes care of all his needs, they develop a romantic relationship, as the operating system was designed to meet all of his emotional needs.

The Actors Sell the Chemistry Between Man and Machine

While an odd premise on the surface, as it progresses, the viewers easily start to understand why it's so revered, as audiences understand how Theodore could fall in love with an operating system. Thanks in large part to the standout performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson, as they perfectly sell the chemistry between the man and the machine. The film shows how companionship and interesting conversation can be much more of an aphrodisiac than a body. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and Jonze won the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award. Much like The Shape of Water , Her is a sci-fi romance that is much more on than what appears on the surface and if viewers can get past some of the initial premise they will certainly find a deeply human movie. 2 Wall-E (2008)

Wall-e

In this sci-fi, futuristic animated film, WALL-E focuses on a waste-collecting robot on Earth, trying to make the planet livable again for humanity. He’s there all alone, doing his work and sometimes even enjoying himself. Things change when a new robot, Eve, is sent to the planet. Eventually, these two robots fall in love, and that love will save the human race and the planet Earth.

Love Without Words

Proving how much facial gestures and body language can communicate, the first half of the movie is primarily silent. In what could be a love letter to silent cinema, Pixar proves they’re more than adept at creating one of the best and sweetest love stories in a sci-fi film without the characters even speaking and just emoting. That’s one of the many reasons this film is still one of the best movies the animated company ever made . WALL-E is a love story that speaks to everyone, both young and old, and continues to delight and inspire audiences so many years after it was released. Stream on Disney+

1 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Coming from the powerhouse minds of Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman ( Being John Malkovich , Adaptation ), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the tale of a couple who, after a strenuous and heartbreaking relationship , decide to undergo a procedure to erase one another from their minds. Not only is this film beautiful, heartbreaking, uplifting, and extremely creative, but both Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are great as the (sometimes) lovers Joel and Clementine. As Joel's memories are being erased, he falls in love again with her, trying to remember her. The film has an ensemble supporting cast that includes Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and Elijah Wood.

An Extremely Creative Love Story

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a sci-fi film but on a small, intimate scale. It has the aesthetics of a grounded character drama but a light sprinkle of sci-fi to tell its fantastical romance of the cyclical nature of love. Are people doomed to make the same mistakes in relationships? Why do memories that hurt so much to think about also become difficult to let go of? It is a film with many complex themes, all beautifully told with stunning visuals that rival the biggest sci-fi blockbuster. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a sci-fi romance that can be enjoyed by fans of the genre, and even for those who don't, as it still can be enjoyed as an everyday love story. Love Is a Surprising, Affecting Look at Addiction

love movie review sify

By Richard Lawson

Image may contain Clothing Apparel Human Person Paul Rust Sleeve Gillian Jacobs Long Sleeve Pants and Footwear

Love is a broad, generic title for a television show. But it’s also an intriguing one, implying a vastness, an encompassing look at the human experience—or at least one huge, joyful, torturous, consuming part of the human experience. On first glance, Netflix’s new series, debuting on February 19, from husband-and-wife co-creators Paul Rust and Lesley Arfin, and Arfin’s former Girls boss, Judd Apatow, doesn’t quite live up to the expansiveness of its title. It initially appears to be yet another show about young(-ish) straight white folks flirting and dating, another look at millennial(-ish) Los Angeles, another gently chiding, aspirational satire of show business. In that way, Love bears some obvious similarities to Netflix’s other comedy series about romance and showbiz and city living, Master of None .

But as Love gradually chips away at that familiar paint, it uncovers some of the anguish and darkness conjured up, in darts and flashes, by that big, insisting title. Where Aziz Ansari, in Master of None , tends toward social satire and inquest, Arfin, Rust, and Apatow bore deeper into the psyche. Oddly but engagingly paced, Love , over the course of its 10-episode first season (which Netflix graciously made available in full for critics), becomes something surprising, a bleary and affecting study of a woman trying to come to terms with addiction, all the everyday pain and itch and restless jumble of it. By the end of the first season, Love has begun to reveal the series it maybe always should have been: hurting and truthful, about something far more complex and granular than simply “will they/won’t they.”

Though, it should be said, that part of the show, the funny push and pull of two people finding each other, is, in its downbeat way, plenty charming. Rust, humble and sweet, plays Gus, an on-set tutor for a cheesy nighttime soap about witches ( Iris Apatow plays his stubborn pupil), who’s just ended a relationship with a woman who found him too nice, too wimpy. Gus is the adorkable Eeyore we’ve seen in lots of Apatowian projects, neurotic and smart and particular. When he has a peculiar meet-cute with a radio-station employee named Mickey ( Gillian Jacobs ), she seems totally wrong, and thus totally right, for him, fun and wild and as desperately in need of comfort and stability as she is.

This part of Love plays out with a spiky patter, the humor charged but natural. It’s peppered with as much dirty talk as non-network comedies are required to be these days, but is never so arch or over the top that it collapses in on itself in a cloud of smug references and vulgarities. A strong company of supporting actors helps keep things bouncy and appealing. The always welcome Tracie Thoms plays Gus’s boss, mean, but in a sensible way. The great Kerri Kenney-Silver comforts and worries as Mickey’s friendly neighbor, confidant, and a slight enabler. Best of all, the Australian comic Claudia O’Doherty is perfectly weird and winsome as Mickey’s new roommate, the rare character on a contemporary comedy who is kind and sharp, a pleasant, accommodating person who also has a credible, piercing edge. It’s my favorite performance on the show.

Well, second to Jacobs, anyway, whose character gets trickier as the season ambles on, a challenge the Community star delves into with careful zeal. Love introduces Mickey’s foibles in irregular rhythms—a vague mention of being sober in the first episode isn’t really explained until the fourth or fifth—which has the refreshing effect of presenting addiction as how it functions in many real-life addicts’ lives: Mickey’s struggle with sobriety is not the rock-bottom collage of despair and destruction we’ve seen a lot of on television. She’s high-enough-functioning, getting by in life O.K., but an enduring, insidious dependence on drugs, alcohol, and, we come to learn, love have kept her from finding any real traction in her life. She’s forever struggling up a slippery hill, bored and unhappy and feeling a mounting sense of detachment and anxiety; addiction is ruining Mickey’s life by slowly, deceptively, almost imperceptibly removing her from it.

If watching someone grapple with that sounds like a more interesting show than two 30-somethings rubber-banding toward one another, you’re not wrong. In Jacobs’s and the writers’ hands, Love traverses some rarer stuff in intriguingly idiosyncratic ways—there’s even a harrowing and moving episode involving, of all the lost souls in the world, Andy Dick. I like the romance just fine, but it’s when we’re watching Mickey do such a difficult thing, trying to break through a fog that settled over her life a long time ago, that the series finds its honest, unique voice.

Much as FX’s You’re the Worst gracefully veered into an inspection of depression in its second season, blooming into a television show with quite a lot to say, Love , early on, swaddles its real strengths in the more comfortable, more palatable armor of dyspeptic comedy. But then it slowly, beguilingly begins stripping that away. If the pointed romantic entanglements get people watching the show, then fine. Love is a pleasant enough diversion as just that. But hopefully audiences stick with the show, which has already been picked up for a second season, long enough for it to make its deeper, more troubling (and also cathartic) case.

Imperfect as the series may be—I can’t quite decide yet if its jarring lack of focus is meta—in its best moments Love insightfully captures something elusive: the scary moment when reckless habit gives way to problem. And the moment, often arriving somewhere around your early 30s, when it becomes frighteningly apparent that no sudden maturity, no external luck, epiphany, or turn of fate, will pluck you out of a bad routine. It’s up to Mickey to fix herself, just as it’s up to Love to find its true path. By the end of the first season, the series, at least, is well on its way to doing just that.

‘Sylvie’s Love’: Film Review

A deliriously old-fashioned, naively plotted romance between a jazz musician and an aspiring TV exec set in 1960s New York City

Sylvie's Love Review

Sultry music swells as the camera swoons over a young couple in a tender nighttime embrace. The 1950s residential New York City street is carefully rain-slicked and lined with shiny classic cars: an obvious stage set. Gene Kelly might just have swung on that lamppost; Doris Day might lean out of an upstairs window to sigh at a painted moon. But the canoodling stars of Eugene Ashe ‘s Sundance competition title “Sylvia’s Love” are Black, which is among the sole indications that this weightlessly glossy yet undeniably charming romance is a product of the 21st century. Even so, were we to find out as the credits roll that the film had actually lain undiscovered in some studio vault for five decades, aside from mild surprise that it would make Tessa Thompson quite a bit older than previously suspected, it would actually explain a lot.

What media & entertainment execs are saying about using gen ai: the vip+/harrisx spring 2024 survey, 'wolfs' trailer: brad pitt and george clooney reunite after 16 years for an action comedy about a botched killing.

More even than Declan Quinn’s sumptuously old-school cinematography and the throwback styling and stock footage exteriors that deliberately mimic the Technicolor romances of old, it’s the fresh-faced naiveté of the storytelling that feels so anachronistic. For a multitude of reasons — the death of the studio system, the rise of the gritty indie, the unfashionableness of melodrama, the antiquarian sound of the term “women’s picture” — they don’t make ’em like this any more, innocent and escapist and scrubbed clean of contact with real grubby life. But then, given the poor history of Black representation in the Hollywood movies of the Golden Age, “they” never really did, and perhaps this small act of retroactive redress is enough of a reason to make such a wildly old-fashioned, fantasy-bubble period romance.

Popular on Variety

Thompson, charismatic as ever, plays Sylvie, the strong-willed daughter of kindly music store owner Mr. Jay (Lance Reddick). At work in the store, she catches the eye of struggling (but crazy talented) jazz saxophonist Robert (a gorgeously sincere performance from Nnamdi Asomugha ), who takes a job in the store just to be near her. Sylvie, however, is engaged to rich, conveniently absent Lacy (Alano Miller) which is the first of several not-terribly-insurmountable obstacles that the obviously predestined couple keep creating for themselves so that their love story, which Sylvie dreamily calls “extraordinary,” can hit a few speed bumps and we get to have a feature-length movie.

Sylvie is obsessed with television and wants to be a producer, a tricky ambition for an African American girl in the late 1950s, one that her father chuckles at incredulously but which actually ends up sailing pretty smoothly for her. Meanwhile Robert’s band acquires a vampish new manager (Jemima Kirke, inexpertly toggling a cigarette holder). She lands the band a gig in Paris at just the moment that Sylvie discovers she’s pregnant with Robert’s baby — information which, in one of those “only in the movies” contrivances, she decides to keep from him so he can fulfill his professional potential of becoming the next John Coltrane.

Five years later, Sylvie is married to Lacy, who is nobly raising her daughter as his own but who chafes against her dedication to her job producing a TV cooking show. Robert is a big success, and a chance encounter inevitably rekindles their extraordinary love. Then a bunch more stuff just sort of has to happen, including a few more acts of pointless self-sacrifice, before Fabrice Lecomte’s lush, appropriately jazz-inflected score can crescendo in tandem with the rising final crane shot and a grand “The End” can fade up.

“Sylvie’s Love” does not want for eye candy — Phoenix Mellow’s delicious costuming and Mayne Berke Thompson’s vintage production design see to that. Thompson’s hairstyles alone, from her Leslie Caron pixie cut to her hairband-embellished ’60s career-woman bob are worth the price of entry. But it’s a bit of a waste of its painstakingly re-created period that the story is so glib. The turbulent Civil Rights era is represented by a glancing mention of the March on Washington in a phone call; the everyday experience of racism is confined to a single dinner party scene; and the dawning women’s lib movement is covered off by a hasty shot of Sylvie reading “The Feminine Mystique.” Wasted, too, is the supporting cast, from Robert’s bandmates to Eva Longoria’s band-leader’s wife to Connie, (Raquel Horsford) — a sexpottish bottle blonde laughably ginned up to be Sylvie’s romantic rival. And the plot is a facile confluence of coincidence, typified by a sequence during which a character dies, an engagement is announced, a life-changing secret revealed, a promotion landed and the seeds of professional discord sown, all during a single New Year’s Eve.

Still, not every movie about the Black experience has to detail realistic hardships, and if you’re looking for more texture and honesty, Barry Jenkins’ wonderful “If Beale Street Could Talk,” set in a similar time and place but with an unmistakably contemporary sensibility, is at the ready. By contrast, “Sylvie’s Love” feels like a work of alternate history, as though Ashe had clicked his heels three times on a studio soundstage in Burbank and wished away the past 50 years of Hollywood filmmaking — and God, Charles Mingus and Douglas Sirk were all listening and made his wish come true.

Praveen Sattaru

Mickey J. Meyer
Sundeep Kishan, Regina Cassandra

Pravin Sattaru, who had created a buzz with his last film LBW, is now back with Routine Love Story. Starring Sundeep Kishan and Regina, this movie is a simple love story based on today’s youth. Let us see how it fares.

Sanju (Sundeep Kishan), is a happy go lucky first year engineering student who falls head over heels for his classmate Tanvi (Regina). They become good friends and spend some happy days together. After a while, Sanju decides to take his relationship to the next level and he proposes to Tanvi.

A confused Tanvi asks Sanju to give her some time so that they can get to know each other well. As with any long term relationship, the couple soon gets to know both the positives as well as negatives in each other. The rest of the story is about whether Sanju and Tanvi decide to go on together in life.

Plus Points :

The movie has a fresh feel that will surely be liked by the younger generation. Sundeep Kishan and Regina’s chemistry is good and they look lovely on screen. They compliment each other well.

Sundeep Kishan, who impressed everyone in ‘Prasthanam’ , does well in this film too. He looks decent and is specially good in the confrontation scenes with Regina.

Regina looks gorgeous and one can say she is one actress who has both the looks as well as the talent to go a long way in the industry.

The small fights, sweet nothings and various aspects of a couple in love have been captured well.

Minus Points :

The movie could have been a lot better if some ‘comedy’ bits were left out. Tagubothu Ramesh’s track and the whole M S Narayana’s forest episode could have been totally avoided. One gets the feeling that Praveen Sattaru forcefully injected some comedy sequences in the movie for the sake of having some ‘commercial elements’. Sadly, it doesn’t work.

The emotion in the romantic track is non existent at a few places. Quarrels and patch ups happen quite fast and some of them are not very convincing.

Jhansi, Hema, Ralla Palli and some other characters don’t have much to do in the film. The climax is also unconventional and may not appeal to everyone.

The pace of the film is slightly slow at times.

Technical Aspects :

Songs by Mickey are good in RLS. ‘Teliyade’ and ‘Na Manasu’ are good and have also been shot well. Dialogues are contemporary and are natural. Camera work is decent and captures the beautiful locales of Ladakh well.

Praveen Sattaru largely succeeds as a director despite the simple story line. Editing is decent.

Routine Love Story is a film which has its share of highs and lows. Fresh feel, good chemistry between the lead pair and some nice conversations are plus points. On the flip side, unnecessary and bad comedy tracks and irrelevant characters spoil the experience. Overall, RLS is a decent entertainer that will appeal to youngsters as a one time watch.

11 best new movies on netflix: june 2024’s freshest films to watch, 11 best new shows on netflix: june 2024’s top upcoming series to watch, stream it or skip it: ‘in good hands 2’ on netflix, a mawkish sequel to a turkish terminal-illness weepie.

The new Netflix romance Love, Divided is a charming remake of the French romantic comedy Blind Date , set in Spain this time around. When a young pianist moves into a new apartment, she learns that her cranky neighbor is trying to drive her out because he can only work in complete silence. Eventually, they compromise on the noise, and soon after, they form a romantic relationship, without ever setting eyes on each other.

LOVE, DIVIDED : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: A grand piano is hoisted by crane in front of an apartment building. A woman on the ground watches anxiously.

The Gist : Valentina (played by Spanish singer Aitana) is our anxious piano player, and she’s moving into a new apartment after a breakup with her ex. Her cousin, Carmen, has arranged a new life for her: a new apartment and new job at a coffee shop, in an effort to get Valentina to move on with her life, but Valentina is preoccupied with a piano audition she has in three weeks that she’s determined to practice for day and night.

David (Fernando Guallar) is Valentina’s new next door neighbor, Their apartments are barely soundproof, and David, an agoraphobic game designer, is something of a mad genius; he’s surrounded by gadgets and tools and requires complete silence to work.

David has successfully chased away every other tenant that has tried to move into the apartment next door by rigging up noisy contraptions that make spooky noises at all hours. Valentina and David speak through the wall and she learns he wants her out so that he can do his work in peace, but she holds firm that she’s not budging, so they engage in a noise-off to try and annoy one another through the wall: he wakes her up with loud banging, she plays piano at all hours. After a particularly contentious day where David critiques Valentina’s piano playing, he later offers an apology and the two start to talk from their respective sides of the wall and get to know one another.

Not only do the two become friendly, but they form a real relationship despite never seeing each other in the flesh, they even rearrange their apartments so their beds share the wall and they can sleep near one another. Valentina remains anxious about her piano audition, especially because her ex, a controlling older man who is also a conductor, has recommended her for it. He’s the one who pushed her to play professional piano, despite her love of singing, so really, she’s pushing herself as a pianist to satisfy him and make him look good. David recognizes that Valentina’s real love is singing and composing, and he encourages her to pursue those instead, but she doesn’t believe in herself enough, not yet anyway.

Eventually, the day of the audition comes and Valentina has to prove herself. She doesn’t exactly bomb it, but at David’s suggestion, instead of playing Beethoven, she plays an original number she wrote. Of course she gets kicked out of the audition and her ex is furious, but guess what? By this point, Valentina is a new woman, ready to come face to face with her future… and with David, who she’s finally ready to see in. the flesh.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Love, Divided combines a quirky, Amélie -like fantasy-meets-reality element to all of its settings (not to mention the fact that Valentina possesses a similar childlike quality to Amélie), mixed with a dash of Love Is Blind .

Our Take: Despite the fact that Love, Divided is a light, airy, implausible love story, it does something that many films like it don’t do, which is give its characters motivation and backstory. Valentina, meek and timid, has spent her life being told what to do, overshadowed and put in her place by a domineering ex. So, too, does David, whose commitment-phobia is rooted in a tragic loss. All of the “whys” come out eventually, which is a crucial component of creating characters instead of caricatures. Credit for that also must be given to the leads, Aitana and Fernando Guallar, who are subtle but convincing as they guide their characters toward love. And the rest of the supporting cast provides the right balance, as they all incredulously rib their two friends for creating a relationship with someone from behind a wall.

The film can’t really be categorized as a rom-com, as it’s fairly light on laughs, but it hits the same beats that a great romantic comedy should (despite having a big music number to showcase Aitana’s talent, it’s not really a musical, either), so I suppose it would be best categorized as a feel-good romance, basically a Spanish-language Hallmark movie. And that’s not meant in a negative way, the film is charming in all the best ways, while managing to avoid being saccharine or generic. While it could have used another pass to make it a little funnier or to give David’s character some resolution of his own (his mad-scientist schtick fades away and the game he’s been designing takes a backseat to his love life), the film slowly and surely builds toward a well-earned happy ending.

Sex and Skin: There’s one scene of Carmen and her date kissing, with implied sex after.

Parting Shot: Valentina and David break down the wall between their apartments and she climbs through the opening and into his arms. As they see one another for the first time, he says, “Hello,” and they fall into a kiss.

Performance Worth Watching: Carmen (Natalia Rodriguez), and Nacho, played by Paco Tous, give some good Carrie Fisher-Bruno Kirby vibes as Valentina and David’s respective sidekicks who also manage to have some sparks fly between them.

Memorable Dialogue: “This is the best dinner I ever had without being in the same room,” David’s friend Nacho says, excusing himself from a meal where he and David have sat on one side of a wall, opposite Valentina and Carmen on the other side.

Our Call: STREAM IT! Love, Divided is a hidden gem, a romantic fantasy that’s broad and appealing, not too heavy on the farce or mistaken identities, and hits just the right notes.

FC Barcelona star Joao Felix says that he loves the club and showed belief he can win the Ballon d'Or one day during an interview with the Nude Project .

Felix arrived in Catalonia on loan, as the summer transfer window drew to a close last year.

His temporary arrangement which President Joan Laporta struck with parent club Atletico Madrid expires on June 30, and the Portuguese now has to see if new manager Hansi Flick wants to keep him around as part of a fresh sporting project after Xavi Hernandez was dismissed last month.

For Felix, however, there is no doubt about what he would like to do and what he feels for the Blaugrana.

"It's always been the club of my childhood and I want to stay, but it's not up to me (...) There could be movements," Felix said.

"I'm on loan, but it doesn't depend on me. I've said that I love Barca; it's always been the club of my childhood, and I want to stay, but it doesn't depend on me; it depends on many other things. And we'll see what can happen," he reiterated.

Reflecting on a trophyless campaign under Xavi, Felix said that Barca's men's first team "has not had much luck" but he vowed to "help" improve this.

"We haven't had much luck. It hasn't been a great season because in the end, we didn't win anything, although we were close. Maybe next year, if I stay, we need to win something at least," he suggested.

Netflix s Most Popular New Movie Is Getting Rave Reviews But Hit Man Is Pretty Bad

A ukrainian drone strike may have destroyed a russian air force su-57 stealth fighter, northern lights could be visible again tonight in parts of u s how to see aurora borealis.

As one of the most technically gifted players in the world, there is no doubt that Felix has potential and could reach the top of the game if he starts performing well on a more regular basis.

He also has confidence in his own abilities, and a belief that he can one day get his hands on football's highest individual accolade, the Ballon d'Or.

"Everyone dreams of winning it," Felix said. "I think I have the qualities to win it. I'm not going to lie. Of course, some things need to improve. Many things have to happen. I'm 24 years old. You have to work hard and believe in it."

'Diane von Furstenberg: Woman In Charge' review

Diane von Furstenberg , a name synonymous with elegance, reinvention and resilience, finds herself once again in the spotlight with the Tribeca Festival premiering the documentary Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge . Directed with a keen eye for the intricacies of an extraordinary life by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Trish Dalton, the film offers an intimate portrait of a woman who transformed not just fashion, but also the concept of feminine power and independence.

Tribeca Festival Raising The Curtain On 2024 With Co-Founder Robert De Niro Front And Center

The documentary delves into von Furstenberg’s early life, beginning with World War II. Born in Brussels to a Holocaust survivor, she was a “miracle baby.” Her mother, shaped by the traumas of war, instilled in the designer a sense of confidence from a young age. This tough love, while seemingly harsh, prepared her for a world that was anything but gentle. With her mother’s lessons in tow, von Furstenberg left the confines of Brussels to the liberating experience of boarding school, where her sexual fluidity in the 1960s led to her expulsion. This period of rebellion and self-discovery laid the foundation for a life characterized by bold choices and fearless exploration. She met and eventually married Egon von Furstenberg, a German prince, who introduced her to a world of wealth and privilege. As a middle class Jewish girl, von Furstenberg navigated this new world with an ease that surprised her.

RELATED: Tribeca Festival 2024: Read All Of Deadline’s Movie Reviews

The moment that transformed von Furstenberg’s career is her recollection of seeing Richard Nixon’s daughter in a simple yet elegant top and skirt combo, inspiring her to create the now-legendary wrap dress. This affordable and stylish garment became a status symbol, empowering countless women during a pivotal era for women’s rights and entry into the workforce. The wrap dress’ significance in the 1970s cannot be overstated, as it embodied the newfound voice of women and fashion during that time. Despite moments where she considered abandoning her fashion career, von Furstenberg’s resilience saw her through. The late ’90s resurgence of her signature designs after being embraced by the influencer generation revitalized the DVF brand for the modern era.

Through archival footage and meticulous research, there is a lot to learn from and about von Furstenberg with her unique style of personal connection to the people around her, and the refusal to ever see herself as a victim. Personal anecdotes provide a rich tapestry of her journey. Her unapologetic attitude and fierce independence are central themes throughout the documentary, with testimonials from friends and admirers such as Oprah Winfrey, Marc Jacobs, Anderson Cooper, Gloria Steinem, Hillary Clinton and Fran Lebowitz, and more. While the film could benefit from a tighter edit to maintain its pacing, it nonetheless offers a wealth of insight into von Furstenberg’s enduring legacy.

Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge is a celebration of life. It captures the designer’s ongoing journey of self-discovery and reinforces her belief that there is always more to accomplish, and that life should be lived to its fullest. This film is a fitting tribute to a woman who has never ceased to inspire, innovate, champion women’s causes, and live by her mantra “see the woman, not the dress.”

The Best Films of 2024, So Far

Our critics pick nine films that they think are worth your time on this long holiday weekend.

In a movie scene, a nerdy looking man in glasses and shirt sleeves stands in front of a green chalkboard with words like “subjectivity” and “knowledge” written on it.

By The New York Times

Looking for a good movie to pass the time this Memorial Day weekend? The New York Times’s chief film critic, Manohla Dargis, and movie critic, Alissa Wilkinson, have you covered. Here are their top picks for the year so far. All are in theaters or available on demand.

In theaters; June 7 on Netflix .

The story: Glen Powell is a philosophy professor who moonlights for the police in New Orleans when he finds himself undercover posing as a hit man in this Richard Linklater movie. An encounter with Madison (Adria Arjona), a housewife looking to hire him, raises the stakes, comedically and romantically.

Alissa Wilkinson’s take: “If I see a movie more delightful than “Hit Man” this year, I’ll be surprised. It’s the kind of romp people are talking about when they say that “they don’t make them like they used to”: It’s romantic, sexy, hilarious, satisfying and a genuine star-clinching turn for Glen Powell, who’s been having a moment for about two years now.” Read the review.

love movie review sify

Now streaming on:

Did she understand when she married her husband what sort of family she was joining? She knew they were rich Italian aristocrats, operators of textile mills in Milan. But did she understand that as a wife from Russia, she would serve and provide and even be loved, but would never truly be a member?

When we see Emma ( Tilda Swinton ) she is preparing the Recchi house for the birthday party of the patriarch. She seems to relate more as a caterer than as a hostess. At the head of the table is the grand old Edoardo ( Gabriele Ferzetti ). Among those gathered are his son and her husband, Tancredi ( Pippo Delbono ). The old man makes an unexpected announcement: He is retiring, and putting Tancredi in charge. But not Tancredi alone. His grandson, their son, Edo ( Flavio Parenti ) also will share the responsibility.

Is Emma filled with joy? Her husband and son will inherit the dynasty? She is so calm and expert, it's hard to say. Tilda Swinton is a daring actress who doesn't project emotions so much as embody them. “I Am Love” provides an ideal role for her, in that her actions speak instead of words. We learn she has her own private space, that after launching a family event, she likes to leave it running smoothly and retire to her room upstairs.

The opening act of Luca Guadagnino's film establishes the stature of the Recchi family as surely as the Corleones are established in “ The Godfather ,” or the Salinas in Visconti's “ The Leopard .” It may be impossible to write about this film without evoking “The Leopard,” not simply because they both involve Italian aristocrats, but because they involve matters of succession, and the way that love and lust can breach the walls aristocrats live behind. Guadagnino makes the connection inescapable by the use of the name Tancredi; in “The Leopard,” Alain Delon pays the Salina nephew of that name.

The Recchi family has been living in a particular way for a long time. Cushioned by great wealth, working in an industry associated with style, never challenged, well-educated, its hungers cloaked in tradition, it occupies its place of privilege effortlessly. Emma speaks Italian fluently, but with a Russian accent, a reminder that she is not quite one of them.

Few actresses can embody urgent sexual desire so well as Swinton. She is realistic about such feelings. When she learns her daughter Elisabetta ( Alba Rohrwacher ) is a lesbian, she reacts not as a mother, possibly with shock, but as a woman, in surprise and curiosity. She has heard of such things. The heart has its reasons.

The feast opening the film is prepared by Antonio ( Edoardo Gabbriellini ), a friend of her son Edo's. She consults with this young chef, and a feeling passes into her. Later, on a visit to her daughter in San Remo, she happens to see Antonio, and with decision follows him through the streets. This is all done without dialogue. The camera is pursuer and pursued. The longer she follows him, the more certain they must meet.

Of course they make love. Actresses are often called upon to enact sex in the movies. Swinton does it differently with each character, understanding that sexuality is as distinctive as speech or taste. Emma is urgent as if a dam has burst, releasing not passion but happiness. Of course this affair threatens her relationship with her husband, her son and her family. But most long-established families have overcome the inconveniences of adultery. Continuity is more important than commitment. The film now observes the ways, not predictable, in which this new sexual act affects Emma's role.

All this time, Guadagnino has been paying due attention to other important members of the family. There is Allegra ( Marisa Berenson ), gatekeeper of her husband. There is the long-serving housekeeper Ida ( Maria Paiato ), who sees and understands everything and in many ways is Emma's refuge in the household. There is the personality of Emma's son, Edo, as yet untouched by the ordeals of business life, more open in his personal feelings. And there is the overarching sense in which the Recchi family embodies a tradition which, like a church, requires devotion if not belief.

“I Am Love” is an amazing film. It is deep, rich, human. It is not about rich and poor, but about old and new. It is about the ancient war between tradition and feeling. For this role, Tilda Swinton learned to speak Italian with a Russian accent, as Tilda Swinton would, but her performance is nothing as trivial as a feat of learning. She evokes Emma as a woman who for years has accepted the needs of the Recchis and discovers in a few days to accept her own needs. She must have been waiting a long time for Antonio, whoever he would be.

Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff in 'A Nice Indian Boy'

Walking out of the theater after DDLJ , Jay ( Jonathan Groff ) launches into a defense of the over-the-top emotionality of Bollywood romances. “I think we’re all embarrassed by the bigness of love,” he declares. His date, Naveen ( Karan Soni ), is intrigued but skeptical, later recounting the interaction to his work bestie (Peter S. Kim) as a bit weird and kind of corny.

Related Stories

Jonathan groff says ryan murphy originally created 'glee' for him, but he turned it down, south by southwest heading to london in 2025, a nice indian boy.

A Nice Indian Boy gets the boy-meets-boy portion of its storyline squared away early. Naveen is a shy Indian American doctor who spends his lonely evenings recording (and usually deleting) messages to former flings like “Guess you’ve been eating an apple a day because you’ve kept this doctor away!” Photographer Jay is more confident and open, a former foster kid whose story got a happy ending when he was adopted by Indian parents. The two start dating after a chance meeting at a Hindu temple, and by the end of the second of the narrative’s five acts, they’re engaged. If that sounds rushed, it is — the bulk of the relationship flies by in a montage covering some unspecified period of time. And throughout, the film’s focus on Naveen cannot help but shortchange Jay, often leaving him as an ideal for Naveen to catch up to rather than a protagonist in his own right.

The relationship between Naveen and Jay needs to be as strong as it is, because A Nice Indian Boy ‘s true will-they-won’t-they lies between Jay, who has no family of his own, and Naveen’s family, who don’t quite know what to make of this “white orphan artist.” Although Naveen’s been out to his family for years, they haven’t, as he puts it, “ever actually seen me be gay.” His mother, Megha (Zarna Garg), will call him at work to recount the entire plot of Milk in a misguided effort to connect, but neither she nor father Archit (Harish Patel) dare ask about Naveen’s personal life — to the irritation of Naveen’s married sister Arundhathi (Sunita Mani), who gets nothing but invasive questions about whether she’s pregnant yet. For his part, Naveen offers them no details about dating either. He’s certainly never brought home a boyfriend, until his engagement to Jay forces the issue.

But beneath A Nice Indian Boy ‘s Meet the Parents -style gags course real fear and hurt. “He didn’t tell his family about me, so it’s like I don’t exist,” Jay complains to friends after an early fight. The way Naveen finally does introduce Jay seems hardly better, however: Terrified of disappointing his parents, Naveen instructs Jay to be a “more formal” version of himself and rushes to downplay Jay’s vape habit or make his queer-centric art sound more “mainstream,” which in turn makes Jay feel rejected.

Meanwhile, Naveen’s parents struggle to understand the choices he’s made, or indeed the fact that he feels entitled to make the sort of choices they themselves never had at all. When Naveen summons the courage to confront his father about his disinterest in his son’s impending nuptials, Archit retorts, “You know how much say my father gave me in my wedding? None.” The bitterness in his voice hints at wounds from his own past that have may have scarred over, but have certainly never disappeared.

And, of course, it can shine through in a burst of song or a razzle-dazzle dance number. A Nice Indian Boy might not capture how epic love can be, exactly — it’s too grounded and scrappy for the sorts of over-the-top displays that Jay so admires in the movies. But it gets something of how full it can make life feel.
