Introduction to Health and Hygiene

The term "Health" refers to the body's natural and healthy state. It is a wonderful source of calm and joy. A healthy state of mind and a physically fit body are considered to be free of disorder, illness, or disease. Health refers to a person's physical, emotional, and psychological well-being in basic terms. Cleanliness, adequate wastewater disposal, and safe drinking water supply are all examples of hygiene practices that help to avoid disease and promote good health. It encompasses all activities aimed at enhancing, preserving, and maintaining excellent health.

Health and Hygiene

Health is a positive state of being in which all components of the body and mind are in proper balance and harmony with one another. As a result, all of the body's organs are in good working order. It is well believed that only those people may be considered healthy if they have a healthy mind and a healthy body. For a healthy and happy existence, health and cleanliness are essential. In terms of community hygiene, health education is critical. To avoid disease and have a positive attitude about health, you must have accurate and comprehensive health knowledge.

Hygiene is another word for sanitation and cleanliness. Great personal hygiene is essential for health reasons. One must practice good hygiene. We must cover our mouth while sneezing and immediately wash our hands to prevent the germs from spreading. This shows our consciousness about health through hygiene. Keeping a decent standard of cleanliness prevents the spread of disease. Social awareness must be spread amongst the civilians so that they would realize the importance of hygiene.

What Exactly is Health?

Health is a quality of life that enables you to live a longer life. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as "a condition of complete physical, mental, spiritual, and communal well-being, rather than only the absence of illness."A person is not regarded as healthy if he is free of sickness or in good bodily shape but is stressed, tense, angry, greedy, or in any other way.

Aspects of Health

Let's look at the health concerns for a moment.

Physical well-being

Mental well-being:

Emotional wellness

The well-being of the community

Spiritual well-being

Hygiene is the science and art of maintaining and improving one's physical and mental well-being. Hygiene enables people to have a healthy interaction with their surroundings. It is applicable to both individuals and communities. Recognize the importance of hygiene and sanitation in maintaining good health.

Our hands keep touching so many surfaces such as handrails, smartphones, steering wheels while driving, etc. Hands are the part of the body that spreads germs the most easily. It takes less than a minute to wash our hands; still, many people refrain from doing this. Good hand hygiene is proven beneficial in preventing the spread of diseases amongst society and family. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), washing hands with soap and water is sufficient to prevent the spread of certain diseases by almost 50%. The next important part of the body that needs proper hygiene is the eye. We are all aware that the eyes are the most delicate part of the body. So taking care of it is not only essential but a necessity. We are surrounded by thousands of electronic things which have a bad impact on the eyes. Keeping the eyes clean must be a frequent task in our daily routine.

While playing in the school, kids must take care of their belongings, such as their water bottles. It is important to keep such things in a clean place. Keeping the bottle here and there and then drinking from the same water bottle is harmful to health. Parents and teachers play a vital role in creating awareness about hygiene in kids.

Hygiene is like a preventive measure that keeps us away from diseases and various other health ailments. No matter how much you care about cleanliness, if the potable water itself is not clean, then it is of no use. Water needs to be not only clean but also healthy. Water is used throughout the day, from drinking, cooking to cleanliness activities. Hence, it is important to use clean water.

Civilians must be made aware of how to maintain hygiene in public places like hospitals. Hospitals are generally crowded with patients and it is obvious that the place will be a hotspot of bacteria and viruses. Hence, it is important to use hand sanitisers and maintain a safe distance from visibly sick people. The next critical step towards a healthy life is oral hygiene—proper oral hygiene wards off gum diseases, bad breath and many infections. Understanding the importance of hygiene will make it easier to eradicate the disease from the world.

How Do You Keep Your Hygiene?

The only thing that helps a person feel healthy is good hygiene. Otherwise, bacteria developing in the dirt generate a slew of ailments, and our health suffers as a result.

When we are surrounded by cleanliness, it makes us feel happy and motivates us to complete our tasks. If there is dirt surrounding us, no matter how focused we attempt to work, we will not be able to complete the task successfully. Our health will decline as well.

Physical Health Alone is Not Everything

There is this stigma that surrounds mental health. People do not take mental illnesses seriously. To be completely fit, one must also be mentally fit. When people completely discredit mental illnesses, it creates a negative impact.

For instance, you never tell a person with cancer to get over it and that it’s all in their head in comparison to someone dealing with depression . Similarly, we should treat mental health the same as physical health.

Parents always take care of their children’s physical needs. They feed them with nutritious foods and always dress up their wounds immediately. However, they fail to notice the deteriorating mental health of their child. Mostly so, because they do not give it that much importance. It is due to a lack of awareness amongst people. Even amongst adults, you never know what a person is going through mentally.

Thus, we need to be able to recognize the signs of mental illnesses . A laughing person does not equal a happy person. We must not consider mental illnesses as a taboo and give it the attention it deserves to save people’s lives.

Essay on Health Hygiene 11 Models

Essay on health hygiene, Health and hygiene are two sides of the same coin, we will present you an essay on  health hygiene. We should all know that without hygiene there is no good health.

Unfortunately, many people do not know the importance of health. We will provide you with the following all the details that make the student  know the importance of hygiene and  how he can clean himself and the place around him.

We will provide several templates so that students can learn how to write an essay on health  and its relationship to hygiene.

Essay on health hygiene

If we look around, we will find that all the heavenly religions call humans to take care of hygiene of all kinds.

There is cleanliness related to the body, as we must clean our bodies on a daily or weekly basis. As for daily hygiene, it is caring for the teeth, as it is necessary to wash them and extract food residues from them.

We must comb the hair more than once a day. As for the face, we will not forget to clean it on a daily basis so that it does not have pimples and skin diseases.

What is the relationship between hygiene and health?

Hygiene and health are two sides of the same coin as they complement each other. When the body is clean, it appears beautiful and healthier.

We start with the teeth that we must clean every day in order to be shiny and not have injuries due to the gathering of mites on them. When the teeth are full of food residues, the mouth smells bad, and the teeth become infected with decay. In order to avoid going to the dentist, we must maintain good oral hygiene.

When a person washes his face and combs his hair after cleaning it with preparations suitable for the type of hair, he protects himself from skin diseases and from insects that live in the hair.

If a person neglects facial hygiene, he will develop painful blisters, which take a long time to treat and leave marks below them on the surface of the skin.

For unclean hair, the insects that live in it feed on blood, causing side effects such as hair loss.

Types of hygiene

There are several types of hygiene, all of which must be taken care of, in order to ensure the preservation of health.

Neglecting any kind of hygiene destroys health.

This neglect of a type of hygiene causes a person to waste his efforts on the rest of the types that he used to maintain cleanliness:

First: body hygiene.

Second: hair hygiene.

Third: keep your hands clean.

Fourth: cleanliness of food and drink.

Fifth: The cleanliness of the surrounding area.

How to clean the body

As for the parts that we must pay attention to cleaning on a weekly basis, they are the rest of the body, where the person who maintains his health showers a number of times that suits the nature of his work and the type of his skin.

If a person goes out to work on a daily basis and is exposed to dust due to the nature of work, he must shower every day after returning home. If he works in a clean place and does not go to work on a daily basis, he can shower 3 or 4 times a week.

As for those who have oily hair or oily skin, it is known that their bodies produce large amounts of fat, which makes them in an uncomfortable state. That is why they should pay more attention to hygiene than others. One of the things they must do is to wash their hair every day.

Those who have an oily body should bathe on a daily basis, so that fat does not accumulate and cause the spread of pimples and unpleasant odor.

Steps to teach children how to maintain cleanliness

In order to be able to teach a young child how to clean himself, we must start with him at an early age. When the child eats, the mother takes him to the bathroom to wash his hands.

Hand washing is the first thing we all learn. One of the benefits of washing hands is that we protect ourselves from pollution and the transmission of germs to the mouth and then to the abdomen.

There are two types of hand washing, including what is done immediately before eating, and its purpose is to remove dust and germs accumulated due to playing and touching dirty things. Another type of hand washing is washing after food to remove food residues that may attract harmful germs and bacteria.

The second stage that parents do in order to teach their children about hygiene is to teach them to brush their teeth and bathe.

Brushing teeth is one of the daily habits that a child must learn at a young age so that he can continue to do so throughout his life.

The benefit that accrues to a person when he brushes his teeth is that his health is better because of the lack of fermentation and rotting of food between his teeth.

As for a person who does not brush his teeth, he will be exposed to diseases due to bacteria and germs that feed on food residues.

At the end of this vital topic, we must all know that health hygiene is one of the most important behaviors that all people should learn. And that the best age to learn health hygiene is young age.

We must know that cleanliness is the main and direct cause of health. When you have a clean body and clean teeth, your health will be in the best condition.

Hygiene is not limited to body hygiene only, but the utensils we use in our food must be cleaned. And we have to clean up where we live, too.

The human body is exposed to a large number of pollutants that affect it negatively. In order to avoid these pollutants, we must know  the main things that cause a person to get sick.

The main reason a person gets sick is poor hygiene. There are many types of uncleanliness, including not washing hands, where hands are used to hold food, causing it to become contaminated. Therefore, hands must be washed before every meal.

One of the types of lack of hygiene is also lack of attention to the teeth and the accumulation of tartar on them and food between them. This food rots over time, attracting bacteria that feed on the rotting remains.

When a person eats a new food, he mixes the new food with the rotting remains, and this mixture is swallowed.

When this food enters the stomach, it causes various diseases in the digestive system.

Everyone knows that hygiene leads to a healthy body. When a person lives in an unclean place, he is susceptible to diseases.

One of the diseases that afflict people due to the lack of cleanliness of the place is skin diseases. These skin diseases change the shape of the skin and cause annoying itching. Sometimes it  may take a long time in treatment.

There are also respiratory diseases caused by living in a place filled with dust. Places that are not cleaned accumulate a large amount of germs and bacteria. And when a person tries to breathe, these germs enter with the air into the lungs. Thus, the person begins to cough and may develop a fever and go to the doctor. And if a person is lucky, he gets rid of this disease after a short period.

One of the unhealthy things that cause a person to get sick is that a person refrains from cleaning his body. It is a form of lack of body hygiene that a person neglects to shower. Not taking a shower causes dirt to accumulate on the body.

This dirt leads to the infection of the person with boils and the emergence of a bad smell of sweat. As for the hair, not washing it causes lice infestation, then the hairs will weaken and fall out.

And we will not forget to shower intensely in the summer to get rid of the sweat that causes a bad smell and the occurrence of infections in the skin.

In order to maintain healthy skin, you must wear clean clothes and choose fabrics that match the surrounding climate.

The human body is divided into several parts, which makes taking care of it difficult, but not impossible. The body is made up of skin, hair, nails and teeth. These are the parts that should be cleaned regularly. But each part of it has a specific method of cleaning, and a person must be accustomed to it since childhood.

The first place that we clean on a daily basis is the teeth, where the remaining food between them must be cleaned and washed 3 times per day.

As for the hair, it should be shaved at least once a month for men. Hair should be washed about twice a week to keep it clean. It must be combed more than once a day in order to maintain its beautiful appearance and stimulate blood circulation in the head.

As for the skin, a person must bathe a number of times, up to twice a day in the summer, and up to 3 times a week in the winter.

And we will not forget the nails, as they should be cut once a week to ensure that bacteria and fungi do not collect under them, because they cause diseases of the digestive system.

Medical research has proven that good health can only be achieved in a clean environment. And when the environment is polluted, we find in it several diseases that are difficult to treat without preventing the surrounding pollution. And this is what happens in densely populated cities, where carbon dioxide diffuses into the air, leading to fatal respiratory diseases.

When the waters of the seas and rivers are polluted, the population suffers from serious diseases due to the ingress of carcinogenic substances to the kidneys and stomach.

And in places where garbage accumulates intensively, we find a huge infestation of cockroaches and mice. Cockroaches and mice transmit dangerous diseases to the population, including the plague, which is transmitted from mice to humans.

In the past, the world witnessed the death of millions due to diseases transmitted from animals such as plague and malaria, which were transmitted to humans through mosquitoes.

Importance of Hygiene and Sanitation

Maintaining personal hygiene and sanitation is important for several reasons such as personal, social, psychological, health, etc. Proper hygiene and sanitation prevent the spread of diseases and infections. If every individual on the planet maintains good hygiene for himself and the things around him, diseases will eradicate to a great level.

Importance of Hygiene

Hygiene, as defined by the WHO refers to “ the conditions and practices that help maintain health and prevent the spread of diseases. ”

This means more than just keeping ourselves clean. This means shunning all practices that lead to bad health. Throwing garbage on the road, defecating in the open, and many more. By adopting such a practice, we not only make ourselves healthier but also improve the quality of our lives.

Personal hygiene means keeping the body clean, consumption of clean drinking water, washing fruits and vegetables before eating, washing one’s hand, etc. Public hygiene refers to discarding waste and excreta properly, that means, waste segregation and recycling, regular disinfection and maintenance of the city’s water reservoir. Quality of hygiene in the kitchens is extremely important to prevent diseases.

Diseases spread through vectors. Say the vector is contaminated water as in the case of typhoid, cholera, and amoebiasis (food poisoning). By drinking clean water, we can completely eliminate the chances of getting diseases.

Some diseases are caused by pathogens carried by insects and animals. For eg., plague is carried by rats, malaria, filarial, roundworms by flies and mosquitoes, etc.

Mosquitoes thrive in stagnant water and rats in garbage dumps and the food that is dumped out in the open. Importance of Cleanliness

Cleanliness means keeping our bodies, homes, and surroundings neat and tidy. A clean environment is refreshing, reduces stress, and increases productivity.

Role of Hygiene

250 Words Essay on Cleanliness and Hygiene

Cleanliness and hygiene are fundamental aspects of a healthy life. They not only reflect an individual’s personal standards but also influence public health outcomes. In the context of a global society increasingly conscious of infectious diseases, the importance of maintaining cleanliness and hygiene cannot be overstated.

The Importance of Cleanliness and Hygiene

Cleanliness is the state of being clean, free from dirt and germs, while hygiene refers to practices associated with ensuring health and preventing disease. Together, they form the first line of defense against various infections and diseases. They also contribute to an individual’s self-esteem, personal satisfaction, and overall mental wellbeing.

Role in Public Health

In a broader context, cleanliness and hygiene play a crucial role in public health. Poor hygiene practices can lead to the spread of contagious diseases. A clean environment, on the other hand, can significantly reduce the transmission of diseases. It is, therefore, a collective responsibility to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in public spaces.

In conclusion, cleanliness and hygiene are not just personal habits but also societal norms that contribute to the overall health and wellbeing of a community. As we navigate a world increasingly aware of the importance of public health, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene becomes an even more critical responsibility for every individual. As the saying goes, “Cleanliness is next to godliness,” implying that cleanliness and hygiene are essential for a healthy and fulfilling life.

500 Words Essay on Cleanliness and Hygiene

Introduction to cleanliness and hygiene.

Cleanliness and hygiene are two essential aspects of human life that significantly impact our health and well-being. Cleanliness refers to the habitual acts of keeping the dirt away, while hygiene is a set of practices performed for the preservation of health. These concepts are not just about an individual’s cleanliness but also about a clean environment.

Hygiene: A Holistic Approach

Hygiene is not limited to personal cleanliness; it encompasses several dimensions. Environmental hygiene involves keeping our surroundings clean, including public areas like parks and streets. Food hygiene is about safe handling and cooking of food to prevent foodborne illnesses. Occupational hygiene focuses on identifying and controlling physical, chemical, and other hazards in the workplace to prevent occupational illnesses.

Role of Cleanliness and Hygiene in Public Health

Cleanliness and hygiene are the cornerstones of public health. Poor sanitation and hygiene conditions can lead to the spread of diseases like cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis. By maintaining cleanliness in public spaces and practicing good personal hygiene, we can prevent the transmission of these diseases.

The Social Aspect of Cleanliness and Hygiene

Cleanliness and hygiene also have social implications. They reflect the discipline and orderliness of a society. Clean public spaces indicate a community’s collective responsibility and respect for shared resources. Moreover, personal hygiene is often associated with an individual’s self-respect and consideration for others.

Education and Cleanliness and Hygiene

Educating people about the importance of cleanliness and hygiene is crucial. Institutions, especially schools and colleges, should incorporate hygiene education in their curriculum. This can foster a culture of cleanliness among students, preparing them to become responsible citizens.

Conclusion: The Way Forward

Cleanliness and hygiene are not just about keeping diseases at bay; they are about fostering a healthier and more productive society. They require collective effort, from personal habits to public policies. By prioritizing cleanliness and hygiene, we can contribute to a healthier, safer, and more sustainable world.

Global report reveals major gaps in menstrual health and hygiene in schools

NEW YORK, GENEVA , 28 May 2024 –  Around the world, menstrual health and hygiene needs are being overlooked due to limited access to information, education, products and services, as well as inadequate facilities and inequalities.

A new report, Progress on drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene in schools 2015–2023: special focus on menstrual health , launched by UNICEF and WHO on Menstrual Hygiene Day, analyses for the first time emerging national data on menstrual health and hygiene in schools globally.

Ten key facts from the report:

  • Worldwide, only 2 out of 5 schools (39%) provide menstrual health education. This increases in secondary schools, with 84% of secondary schools in Central and Southern Asia, for example, providing menstrual education, compared to 34% in primary schools.
  • Less than 1 in 3 schools (31%) globally have bins for menstrual waste in girls’ toilets. This drops to 1 in 5 schools in Least Developed Countries (17%), and only 1 in 10 schools (or 11%) in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Menstrual products are not always readily available, with many unable to afford them. In sub-Saharan Africa, for example, only 1 in 8 schools (12%) provide menstrual materials for free or for purchase.
  • In many countries, adolescent schoolgirls do not have access to a clean toilet or other dedicated private space to change menstrual products in school.
  • Unequal access to water and soap is an additional issue for millions of adolescent schoolgirls. Girls in urban areas, private schools and girls-only schools are more likely to have access to a private place with water and soap, highlighting inequalities even within the same country.
  • Millions around the world are unaware or unprepared for menstruation before having their first period. A study in Ethiopia, for example, reveals that less than half the surveyed girls knew about their periods before their first time.
  • Studies show that stigma related to menstruation remains widespread, with adolescents often feeling ashamed or unable to openly discuss the topic. This shame can affect their mental health and school attendance.
  • No national datasets were identified on how many teachers are trained to teach about menstrual hygiene, indicating a significant gap in educational support. Teachers play a crucial role in providing accurate information and creating a supportive environment, but without proper training they are ill-equipped to address students' needs.
  • Only 30 countries, over one-third in sub-Saharan Africa, have relevant data tracking at least one of the globally recommended priority indicators. This lack of data hampers efforts to understand and address the issues comprehensively.
  • While countries such as Zambia and the Philippines have shown marked improvements in making menstrual products and services available in schools, more needs to be done. Change is possible with targeted policies and investments.

The report underscores the urgent need for global action to improve menstrual health and hygiene in schools. By addressing these issues, we can ensure that every schoolgirl can manage her menstruation with dignity, safety and confidence.

The new UNICEF-WHO report also includes progress on broader access to water, sanitation, and hygiene in schools. Today, 1 in 5 children (447 million) still lack basic drinking water services at their school, 1 in 5 lack basic sanitation services (427 million), and 1 in 3 children (646 million) don’t have access to basic hygiene services. Achieving the relevant Sustainable Development Goal by 2030 will require a two-fold increase in current rates of progress for basic drinking water, a two-fold increase for basic sanitation, and a four-fold increase for basic hygiene services.

Notes to Editors

The WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) report - Progress on drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene in schools 2000-2023: special focus on menstrual health – compiles data on global progress towards achieving universal access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), and for the first time includes a section on menstrual health. The emerging data measures global progress against several indicators which shed light on how many adolescent schoolgirls are not yet able to meet their menstrual needs across the world, and the efforts required until we are able to create a period-friendly world for all.

National data availability for menstrual health remains limited and indicator definitions vary making cross-country comparison difficult. Global and regional estimates are aggregates and should be treated as such.

Association between dental clinical measures and oral health-related quality of life among Iraqi schoolchildren: A cross-sectional study

  • Alautry, Hanan Fadhil
  • Namdari, Mahshid
  • Khoshnevisan, Mohammad Hossein
  • Ghasemi, Hadi

Objective The aim of this study was to assess the association between dental clinical measures and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) together with the potential mediating role of sociodemographic factors and oral health behaviours on this association in a group of Iraqi children. Methods The target population for this cross-sectional study consisted of 372 primary school children aged 8–10 years in the city of Kut, Iraq, during the year 2022. The participants were selected using a multi-stage random sampling technique. Detailed information about the children was collected through a comprehensive questionnaire that included demographic characteristics, oral health-related behaviors, the Arabic version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire for 8-10-year-olds (CPQ8-10), and parental knowledge regarding oral health. Additionally, clinical dental evaluations were conducted, which included assessments of decayed, missing, and filled surfaces (DMFS, dmfs) as well as teeth (DMFT, dmft). Simplified oral hygiene index (OHI-S), bleeding on probing (BOP), and the community periodontal index (CPI) were also recorded for each participant using the recommended methodology by the World Health Organization (WHO). The statistical analysis included the Chi-square test, independent t-test, and simple and multiple linear regressions. Results The mean age of the children was 9.0 (± 0.82) years. About one-third of children reported brushing at least two times per day and consuming a sweet snack once a day. Visiting a dentist during the past year was reported by 21% of children. Oral health behaviours demonstrated a significant association with the total CPQ8-10 scores (p < 0.001). Based on adjusted effects (β and 95% CI) from the multiple linear regressions, untreated dental caries (dt > 0, DT > 0) had a negative impact on the total CPQ8-10 score (adjusted β = 2.3 (95% CI: 0.67 to 3.91) and 3.4 (95% CI: 2.14 to 4.56), respectively). Decayed surfaces (DS), and teeth (DT) were associated with the total score of the CPQ8-10 and all its subscales (adjusted β range = 0.1 (95% C.I.: 0.03 to 0.19)–1.0 (95% CI: 0.72 to 1.26) and 0.2 (95% CI: 0.004 to 0.40)–1.2 (95% CI: 0.91 to 1.67), respectively). There was an association between oral hygiene index and total CPQ8-10 scores (adjusted β = 1.8 (95% CI: 0.62 to 3.02)), especially the functional limitations and emotional well-being subscales. Conclusion Findings of this study emphasizes the negative impact of dental caries and poor oral hygiene on children's OHRQoL. This association is highlighted more when considering that over two-thirds of these children do not comply with favourable levels of oral health behaviour. Enhancing the level of OHRQoL among these children, therefore, necessitates comprehensive programs for decreasing the volume of unmet oral health needs and improving children's adherence to recommended oral health behaviours.

Research along this entire spectrum represents a fundamental mission of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

From laboratories at Baltimore’s Wolfe Street building, to Bangladesh maternity wards in densely   packed neighborhoods, to field studies in rural Botswana, Bloomberg School faculty lead research that directly addresses the most critical public health issues worldwide. Research spans from molecules to societies and relies on methodologies as diverse as bench science and epidemiology. That research is translated into impact, from discovering ways to eliminate malaria, increase healthy behavior, reduce the toll of chronic disease, improve the health of mothers and infants, or change the biology of aging.
