" Zankoku na Tenshi no These "  (残酷な天使のテーゼ, Zankoku na Tenshi no Tēze ? , " A Cruel Angel's Thesis ") is the theme song of the popular anime Neon Genesis Evangelion performed by Yoko Takahashi . It is used as the opening to the series, and two instrumental versions of it are played in the final episode, " Take care of yourself. " These are "The Heady Feeling of Freedom" and "Good, or Don't Be", scored for violin, piano, and guitar. "The Heady Feeling of Freedom" is a somber and reflective piece for bowed strings and guitar, while "Good, or Don't Be" is played to a light piano and guitar tone. A similar version can also be heard during the intermission between the two parts of Evangelion: Death and Rebirth .

The single was released on 25 October 1995 within the Zankoku na Tenshi no These (Single) the catalog number KIDA-116 and it also reached a peak rank 17 in the Oricon album database, appearing in the ranks 61 times.

Unlike what is commonly assumed, this song was written without any involvement from the show's creators. [1] Anno originally wanted to use an excerpt from Borodin's Polovtsian Dances in the opening, but the producers did not approve of this and instead decided to use a J-Pop song, which eventually resulted in the creation of "A Cruel Angel's Thesis". The lyricist, Neko Oikama had next to no knowledge of the show. Oikama simply skimmed through a proposal of the show (possibly Neon Genesis Evangelion Proposal ) and watched unfinished versions of two episodes on fast forward, only serving to broadly "fit" the anime after the fact. [2] [3] [4] Oikama took inspiration for the title from the manga A Cruel God Reigns . [5] She said the lyrics "become a legend" were originally "become a weapon". She was orientated that the show was "difficult and philosphical". Oikama described it as: "older women", "mothers" and "14-year-old boys and girls", and decided to make it about the perspective of a mother when her child "leaves the nest". [6] The original song included a male chorus, which was cut at director Hideaki Anno's request in order to "emphasize maternal affection". [7] The writing process for Episode:01 took as long as six months, [8] and the opening sequence was not yet finished. [9] [10] Singer Yoko Takahashi was also brought in relatively haphazardly and had no knowledge of the series, and would only see the opening featuring her voice when it aired on TV. During the instrumental break in the middle of the song, a chorus can be heard. The lyrics to the chorus are not in Japanese, nor in any other recognizable language. According to the January 1996 issue of Newtype magazine, the lyrics can be phonetically transliterated into Japanese as 「ファリィア。セタ(or セパ）メッソ。ファリィア。トゥスェ」 "Fariya. Seta (or sepa) messo. Fariya. Tuse" , and they are supposedly written in an untranslated language passed down from ancient times. One could entertain the possibility that they are written in the same language as that of the Dead Sea Scrolls . [14]

A Cruel Angel's Thesis

A Cruel Angel's Thesis is the opening theme song for the series Neon Genesis Evangelion , composed by Hidetoshi Sato and sung by Yoko Takahashi . The lyrics are by Neko Oikawa while the arrangement is by Toshiyuki Omori. The song also has the distinction of taking first place in the JASRAC Awards. [1]

This song was written with relatively limited involvement from Hideaki Anno and the production staff, being handled by producer Toshimichi Otsuki . [2] Anno originally wanted to use an excerpt from Borodin's Polovtsian Dances in the opening, but the producers did not approve of this and instead decided to use a J-Pop song, which eventually resulted in the creation of this song by Neko Oikawa.

Oikawa apparently had very little knowledge of the show, which was under production at the time with the episodes not having been colored. According to tweets and interviews, Oikawa went through a proposal of the show (possibly Neon Genesis Evangelion Proposal ) and watched two unfinished episodes on fast-forward, only serving to broadly "fit" the anime after the fact [3] [4] The writing process for Episode 01 took as long as six months, [5] and the opening sequence was not yet finished. • young boy, become the legend! : The word "shinwa" actually means "myth" ("legend" would be "densetsu"), but I think it sounds better as "legend."
• with surging, hot pathos : "Atsui" (hot) can also mean "intense, passionate." "Pathos" is "the quality or power in life or art of evoking a feeling of pity or compassion; pity; suffering; sorrow."
• Embracing this sky [universe] and shining : "Sora" (sky) is the reading given for the kanji for "uchuu" (universe).
• has any meaning : The kanji used for the "a" in "aeta" is not the normal kanji used in "au" (to meet). It's the first kanji in "ouse" (encounter, tryst) and has more of a connotation of meeting by fate or being brought together by fate, not just meeting. (Interestingly, a dictionary I have gives the meaning of "au," when written with this kanji, as "to meet (with drama or pathos)")
• for learning freedom : The "watashi wa sou" is probably "watashi wa sou omou." And "bible" in this case isn't referring to *the* Bible. "Bible" can also mean "guide book, how-to book, a book valued for its use as a reference," like in "a handyman's bible," or "a bird-watcher's bible."

3 The instrumental section contains chanted non-Japanese lyrics in Yoko Takahashi 's version and a few others, while other versions of the song have a purely instrumental section. The January 1996 issue of Newtype magazine transcribed Takahashi's lyrics in this section as "Fariya. Seta(or sepa) messo. Fariya. Tuse." which they speculate is from the fictional language of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Alternatively, an EvaGeeks forum discussion suggests that the lyrics may be "Faria? Será mesmo? Faria? Eu sei!" which is in the Portuguese language. Since the word "Faria" is usually used in a similar way as the English word "would", those lines could be interpreted as someone doubting something or someone else. There has never been any official information on the actual lyrics or their meaning, if any.

The EVA Pilots

Shinji ikari, stand: cruel angel's thesis.

• Adaptational Badass : Besides having a Stand, Shinji is far more independent and confidant.
• Alternate Character Reading : His name in Japanese isn't written with the normal kanji, but is instead written with a repeating "Jo", hence why he also has the JoJo title.
• Breaking Old Trends : He's the first JoJo in the series not to come from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Sadao was a minor character in Stardust Crusaders , while George and Josefumi are alternate versions of Johnny Joestar and Part 8 Josuke Higashikata).
• Kiai : In true JoJo fashion, he has one that he can perform either with his Stand or his EVA. It consists of the repeating word "dame" which means "hopeless" in Japanese, basically a Badass Boast that the recipient never had a chance against him. Shinji: "DAME DAME DAME DAME DAME DAME DAME DAME DAME DAME DAME DAME DAME DAME DAME DAME!"
• Killer Gorilla : A rare heroic version of this trope, Unit-01's armor can be modified to become more gorilla-themed. This also results in a Growing Muscles Sequence .
• Monster Whale : The fourteen Angels use their cores to pull an All Your Powers Combined , merging with Unit-01 and giving it a whale motif to deal the final blow against SEELE.
• Shinji himself is a subversion. He's still rather thin-looking, but he does have significant musculatur, Asuka noting that his muscles are like tightly-bound steel cord just under his skin.
• Mythology Gag : His Stand having the same name as the story is a gag to certain dubs giving the current JoJo 's Stand the same name as their Part in order to avoid copyrights.
• Noble Bird of Prey : His partner, Unit-01, is eagle-themed, and fully capable of flight.
• Point of Divergence : Gaining a Stand from the arrow caught Gendo's attention, and he tried to have Shinji train with the EVA as a result. This led to the discovery that boosting the armor meant to be a Restraining Bolt would calm the titans, and even resulted in Yui being released.
• Red Is Heroic : Unlike his canon counterpart, who wore a blue plug suit, he takes Asuka's place as the red-suited pilot.
• Shout-Out : In a nod to Dobutsu Sentai Zyuohger , Shinji quotes Yamato Kazakiri just before the final battle against Nikolai. Shinji: Don't mess with this planet!
• Tattoo as Character Type : Personal Emblem type. Like Sadao, he's not directly blood-related to the Joestar line despite being connected to the clan as a whole. So Josuke gave him a tattoo identical to the Joestar birthmark to signify that he was indeed a JoJo like the others.

• Adaptational Badass : Instead of being a clone with limited combat ability, she's a Gigan-human hybrid with a powerful Lightning Mode and exceptional martial arts skills.
• Adaptational Origin Connection : In canon her face is identical to Yui because Gendo couldn't bring himself to keep any photos and needed a reminder of what his wife looked like. Here it's because Naoko needed a blood transfusion during her pregnancy and Yui volunteered since she had a compatible blood type. Since Rei's Gigan abilities were already developing even as a fetus, she absorbed some of the blood and thus her face developed in a manner similar to Yui's.
• Adaptational Skimpiness : Her civilian outfit is designed to expose as much skin as possible without showing her privates, in order to facilitate her Lightning Mode. Seems to be a Gigan tradition, as even in the modern day, most Gigans only have the most minimal of dress.
• Adaptation Species Change : Her canon counterpart is a human clone, created by NERV using Yui Ikari's genetic material. Here, she's a Gigan-Human hybrid due to being born from a Gigan father through a human mother.
• Blue Is Heroic : Her suit and EVA are both colored blue.
• Body Horror : Like with all Gigans that develop an elemental "Mode", Rei manipulates her own physiology to unleash it. In her case, she causes her nerves to pop out of her body, and can even cause her spinal cord to be exposed for extreme electrical attacks.
• Crossover Relatives : She's the Gigan-Human hybrid daughter of Wamuu through her mother, Naoko Akagi.
• Half-Human Hybrid : Due to changes in setting, she is a Gigan-Human hybrid due to having a Gigan father and a human mother.
• Hybrid Power : Due to being half-Gigan through her father, Wamuu , she has a Gigan's Super-Strength and Super-Senses , the ability to easily manipulate her own cellular structure at will, and access to an elemental "Mode" (in her case it's lightning , thanks to Wamuu's training). She also, unlike Wamuu and other pure-blooded Gigans, has the perk of being able to walk in sunlight without turning into stone. And due to being half-human through her mother, Naoko, she can sleep and eat food normally like other humans, and while her lifespan is shortened because of her heritage, she can still live for centuries.
• Irony : She is the trope namer for the Rei Ayanami Expy , yet due to changed circumstances, she acts nothing like the trope or her canon self.
• Ship Tease : Gets some with Kaworu.
• Threatening Shark : Her partner, Unit-02, is shark-themed and fully aquatic. It can also "swim" through the ground.

Asuka Langley Soryu

• The Ace : As far as Hamon prodigies go, she might out-perform Jonathan Joestar , having completed the Hell Climb Pillar at only 14 years old !
• Adaptational Angst Downgrade : She never lost her mother in this timeline, leading her to have a much healthier outlook on life.
• Adaptational Badass : She knows Hamon in this story, and is quite proficient in it.
• Adaptational Heroism : Not that she was a bad guy in canon, but there she was just a glory hound. Here she's piloting because becoming a Hamon user has made her feel a connection with all living things, making her feel responsible for protecting them.
• Adaptational Nice Guy : She has a much better first impression with the other EVA pilots, and even quickly gains a crush on Shinji from the get-go.
• All Amazons Want Hercules : When she sees that Shinji is just as capable of kicking butt as she is, she immediately becomes smitten.
• Best Her to Bed Her : A variation. Asuka once again locks Shinji out of her room with her canon "wall of Jericho" speech... Only for Shinji to kick open the door and point out that he read the story of Jericho and how its wall fell. Asuka promptly drags him into her room with a passionate kiss.
• But Not Too Foreign : Like canon she's half-German, and will occassionally slip into her native German language.
• Call-Back : She knows the Hamon Hair Attack, a Hamon barrier created using hair follicles. This technique was first used once by Joseph Joestar, and later picked up by Joseph's son George as part of his regular techniques. It turns out Caesar learned the technique from Joseph.
• Friend to All Living Things : Implied through her use of Hamon, through which she can sense the pain of the planet.
• King of Beasts : Her partner, Unit-03, is lion-themed.
• "Not Wearing Pants" Dream : She apparently once had a dream where she walked into class completely naked, though only Shinji was in the classroom to see her. Also doubles as an Erotic Dream given the mess Asuka found in her bed the next morning.
• Official Couple : Quickly becomes this with Shinji.

Aigis Idabashi

• Adaptational Origin Connection : She was created by Dr. Idabashi instead of the Kirijo Group.
• Arm Cannon : Her hands can become revolvers for ranged combat.
• Big Damn Heroes : She and Unit-04 save the other pilots when they're being pressured by Israfel, slamming into him with the force of an N2 mine and rendering him inert for days.
• Crossover Relatives : She's the younger sister of Keebo and the older sister of Jet Alone.
• Official Couple : It's implied she's dating Makoto Yuki in the background.
• Overclocking Attack : She's able to create a powerful electrical discharge by overclocking her power core.
• Ridiculously Human Robot : To the point where Aigis can even get stronger through working out, due to her modular nature.
• Robot Girl : Naturally she's this, as she was built with the same technology as Keebo.
• War Elephants : Her partner, Unit-04, is elephant-themed and has the strength to match.

Kaworu Nagisa/Tabris

• Artificial Human : His human body is essentially a homunculus created from multiple genetic donors, giving him a unique appearance not based on any existing human.
• Barrier Warrior : He can control his AT Field better than even Ramiel, even giving it electrical properties to match what his teammates can do.
• Humans Are Special : He believes that humans have earned their right to stay on Earth, and he knows Adam feels the same way.
• Hunter of His Own Kind : Despite being the Seventeenth Angel (Tabris, the Angel of Free Will), he willingly works with NERV to prevent his siblings from instigating Third Impact. Or worse, accidentally releasing Lilith.
• Panthera Awesome : His partner, Unit-05, is tiger-themed and the fastest of the EVAs .
• Ship Tease : He admits that he finds Rei attractive on multiple levels.

Mari Illustrious Makinami

Stand: beautiful world.

• Age Lift : She's noted to be older than her canon counterpart, to the point where she's been long-time friends with Yui.
• Alliterative Name : M ari M akinami. Subverted if you include her middle name, Illustrious.
• The Berserker : Her Stand can make her go feral in a heartbeat. Not wanting to lose her sense of reason in this state, she spent years training with Speedwagon both physically and mentally.
• Crossover Relatives : Her uncle is Gray Fly, though she's long since disowned him due to his evil nature.
• Foil : Her Stand is one to Shinji's Cruel Angel's Thesis. While Shinji got his Stand from one of the arrows and it has an emphasis on offense and utility, Mari was born with her Stand and it has an emphasis on defense and physical enhancement.
• The Glasses Come Off : This coupled with Red Eyes, Take Warning lets you know Mari is ready to unleash her feral mode.
• Noble Bird of Prey : Unit-00, following its modifications to make it compatible with the new EVA system, is modeled after a condor.

Rusty Dashell

Stand: radioactive.

• Adaptation Species Change : Canon Shining Armor is a Unicorn. Here, he's a human to match the changed setting.
• Adaptational Superpower Change : Sort of, as it's the origin of his power, not the power itself, that changed. His canon counterpart's barrier magic was part of him being a Unicorn, which gave him the tribal ability to wield magic. Here, his barriers come from him being a Stand user.
• Adaptation Name Change : His canon counterpart 's name is Shining Armor. Here, his birth name is Rusty Dashell, with "Shining Armor" being an Affectionate Nickname .
• Battle Couple : He frequently partners with Cadence for combat, their Stands working in tandem since his has no combat capabilities.
• Big Good : He's the one currently in charge at Speedwagon, who is working with NERV to prevent Third Impact.
• Early-Bird Cameo : He gets a few minor appearances starting in Stone Ocean , before having a major role in Cruel Angel's Thesis .
• I Should Have Been Better : This is why his Stand is called "Radioactive". As a young boy, he manifested his Stand to contain the blast when Adam crash-landed in Antarctica, but failed to contain the radioactive fallout because he didn't know the explosion would be radioactive. He managed to quickly shield himself before he got contaminated, and Misato was already sealed in a lead container, but the rest of the expedition died from radiation poisoning. His Stand's name serves as a reminder for him to always do research on whatever he's trying to block so he'll be able to protect more people in the future.
• Point of Divergence : His presence in Antarctica and his Stand awakening there prevents Adam's destruction (the trigger for Second Impact) from messing up the world big time.
• Related Differently in the Adaptation : In My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic , Shining Armor is Twilight Sparkle's older brother. Here, he's the brother of Twilight's friend Rainbow Dash instead, albeit as twin siblings, while Twilight Sparkle is his great-grandmother through her husband Speedwagon .

Cadence Dashell

Stand: deathharmonic.

• Adaptational Wimp : Canon Cadence was an Alicorn, which was equal to being a Physical God in her show, and her magic revolved around The Power of Love . She also helped defeat King Sombra after the Crystal Empire appeared. Here, she doesn't have godlike power, and while she does have an offensively powerful Stand, its nature requires her to stand still, making her extremely reliant on Shining Armor's barriers.
• Battle Couple : Naturally she frequently fights alongside her husband, since her Stand is purely offensive and has no options for defense.
• Glass Cannon : Her Stand's sonic screams are powerful enough to decimate even the largest of foes. But since it's embedded in her vocal chords, she only has her own body for defense.
• Logical Weakness : She can hold a note for quite a while, but sooner or later she does need to breathe, during which time her Stand can't trigger.
• Related Differently in the Adaptation : In My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic , she married Shining Armor, making her the sister-in-law of his younger sister, Twilight Sparkle. Here, she's Twilight's granddaughter-in-law since Shining Armor is now Twilight's great-grandson.
• Related in the Adaptation : She is the sister-in-law of Rainbow Dash here by virtue of her husband, Shining Armor, being Rainbow Dash's twin brother.

Gendō Ikari

• Adaptational Angst Downgrade : Downplayed at first in that he still lost Yui in this continuity, but Nu Mikitakazo Nshi helped him to actually process it and not completely sacrifice his relationship with his son in the process. It's later played fully straight, with him going on to look for a much less destructive way to rescue his wife and eventually succeeding.
• Adaptational Heroism : In addition to being an actually good parent in this continuity, he is legitimately working to save the human race unlike his canon counterpart, who was willing to sacrifice everyone just to resurrect Yui.
• Benevolent Boss : Compared to canon, he really treats his people with respect, knowing they're all trying to save the world together.
• The Chessmaster : He comes up with several effective plans for dealing with SEELE, with Lorenz not catching on until it's far too late.
• Crossover Relatives : He is the brother-in-law of Tomoko Higashikata because his wife, Yui Ikari, is Tomoko's sister. This makes him the uncle-in-law of Tomoko's son, Josuke.
• Good Parents : Holy crap, is he ever compared to canon! He's frequently praising Shinji almost unconditionally, and even treats him as an equal rather than a subordinate or even a tool.
• Hidden Depths : He's apparently a major geek deep down, as one of his earliest attempts to woo Yui involved corny singing.
• It's Personal : At one point he takes the fight to SEELE personally in an assault helicopter to address some "personal grievances".
• Self-Fulfilling Prophecy : After losing Yui, he fell into a depression and nearly went through with his canon decision to send Shinji away to avoid being a bad father to him. Nu Mikitakazo Nshi stopped him by pointing out that by leaving Shinji without telling him why, he was turning into the very person he was afraid of becoming. This went a long way in turning his life around and, by extension, derailing the canon plot .
• Unwitting Pawn : SEELE intended for him to be this, using Yui's canon fate to emotionally manipulate him into instigating Third Impact under the vain hope of getting her back. This would have led to him abandoning Shinji in his misguided attempts to avoid being a bad father, had he not been stopped by Nu Mikitakazo Nshi, who pointed out that by abandoning Shinji, he was creating a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy . Nu Mikitakazo Nshi's words motivated him to find other ways to rescue Yui, unwittingly breaking himself free of SEELE's control in the process.

• Adaptational Heroism : Her canon counterpart clearly loved her son Shinji, but she is Ambiguously Evil in that she willingly went through with a plan involving her getting absorbed into EVA Unit-01, and inflicting severe emotional trauma upon Shinji through Gendo, who became a cold, manipulative, and neglectful father. Here, while she still ended up inside Unit-01, it's because she was tricked into testing it by Lorenz in hopes of binding Gendo to him as an Unwitting Pawn . Thankfully, Gendo was able to find a way to rescue her and restore her back to normal, having been motivated by Nu Mikitakazo Nshi to have a Jerkass Realization .
• Crossover Relatives : She is a sister of Tomoko Higashikata here, making her son Shinji a cousin of Tomoko's son Josuke. In canon, they had no such relations.
• Happily Married : Like her canon counterpart, she's in a loving marriage with Gendo and her presence brings out his best qualities. With her survival here, Gendo doesn't go off the deep end and instigate Third Impact trying to bring her back.
• The Lost Lenore : Exploited. Lorenz wanted her to be this to Gendo — by losing Yui, Gendo would become depressed and desperate enough to use horrific means to bring back his beloved wife, which would have made him an Unwitting Pawn for SEELE. This also would have alienated Shinji into becoming an Extreme Doormat , which in canon eventually kicked off Third Impact. Fortunately, thanks to Nu Mikitakazo Nshi's intervention, Gendo has a Jerkass Realization and is motivated to research alternative ways to rescue Yui, eventually succeeding in doing so.
• Point of Divergence : Like her canon counterpart , her soul was assimilated into EVA Unit 01, though here it's because she was tricked by Lorenz in order to bind her husband Gendo to SEELE as a pawn. Thanks to Nu Mikitakazo Nshi's intervention, she was rescued from the EVA and restored to normal, as Gendo had a Jerkass Realization about his own behavior and set out to do things differently.
• Spared by the Adaptation : Zig-zagged. In canon, her soul was assimilated and trapped within EVA Unit-01 . While she wasn't dead per se, she wasn't alive, either. That still happens to her in this continuity, but her husband, Gendo, who was motivated by Nu Mikitakazo Nshi to find a different way to save her instead of instigating Third Impact like Lorenz wanted , managed to recover and fully separate her from Unit 01.
• What Does She See in Him? : She was absolutely perplexed when Tomoko fell for Joseph Joestar, and often asked her sister why she would fall in love with a guy who's much older than her. Tomoko would respond that most of the eligible bachelors in Morioh who are closer to her in age were douchebag assholes .

Misato Katsuragi

• Did They or Didn't They? : During a blackout at the GeoFront , Misato and Kaji are trapped in an elevator together. We do see them kiss, but they were in there long enough for it to go further. We don't get any details, however.
• He's Not My Boyfriend : Despite having known Shining for years, she never had any romantic interest in him, despite what some people assumed.
• Ms. Fanservice : She's hot and she knows it, and likes to tease whenever possible.
• Not Hyperbole : When introducing the team to Asuka, she notes that the Fourth Child still needs some tune-ups. She's not kidding, as said Fourth Child is a Robot Girl .
• Official Couple : After she gets over how Kaji reminded her of her father, she gets back together with Kaji.
• She Cleans Up Nicely : Misato is normally a drunk slob, but when it's time to get down to business she cleans up her act in seconds.
• Sole Survivor : Other than Shining, she's the only survivor of the Antarctic expedition that was wiped out when Adam exploded.
• Team Mom : She acts as this for the pilots since circumstances make it near impossible to live with their parents while on Zero Point.

Naoko Akagi

• Actually Pretty Funny : When Yui joked that Rei has two mothers due to absorbing the blood from Yui giving Naoko a blood transfusion, Naoko actually finds the notion amusing.
• Genre Savvy : When Mayumi first comes into the picture, Naoko comes to the correct conclusion that SEELE secretly sent her as a spy.
• Interspecies Relationship : She's in a relationship with Wamuu, showing that humans and Gigans can interbreed.
• Second Love : After losing her first husband, she traveled the world and found Wamuu, finding new love with him.
• Spared by the Adaptation : She never even touched Unit-00, let alone get shoved inside to have her soul trapped within it.

Ritsuko Agaki

• Adaptational Heroism : Since Gendo isn't a bastard in this story, Ritsuki also winds up as a better person.
• Cool Big Sis : Rei still looks up to her despite them having different fathers, and the two aren't afraid of a little friendly bickering.
• Lampshade Hanging : She internally wonders how her mom survived having sex with Wamuu of all beings .

Kozo Fuyutsuki

• Adaptational Angst Downgrade : He doesn't suffer depression in this story since not only is Yui still around, prompting Gendo to remain a good person, but Shinji shows clear qualities of both his parents in a positive way.
• Number Two : He's the second-in-command at NERV, and interacts with the pilots almost as much as Gendo.
• Smart People Play Chess : Shogi, actually, but he's a frequent player with Gendo.
• This Is Gonna Suck : Pretty much his thinking when Asuka asks about the possibility of co-ed roommates. Fuyutsuki: "Teenagers..."

Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu

• Good Parents : We see in her interactions with Asuka that her canon self would have definitely made a good parent if not for the whole "not having a soul" thing.
• Spared by the Adaptation : Lorenz's plan to suck her soul out of her body to power Unit-03 is discovered by Joseph and stopped, allowing Kyoko to stay with her daughter.

• Adaptational Origin Connection : He's a genuine NERV agent in this story, no connections to SEELE.
• Forgot Flanders Could Do That : He may look and act like a goofball at times, but he's very intelligent and a competent intelligence agent. This catches Misato off-guard when Kaji provides an exceptional plan for dealing with Israfel.
• Official Couple : After his actions remind Misato of why she fell in love with him in the first place, they hook back up permanently.

• Adaptational Badass : It was noted in canon that Jet Alone wouldn't last five minutes against an Angel. This version is vastly superior due to possessing a Strong AI like its older siblings (Keebo and Aigis), and an armor plating made from the nearly indestructible metal duralumin.
• Adaptational Expansion : Acting as a support unit for the EVAs , Jet Alone does a lot more in the story, getting involved in several fights against the Angels.
• Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond : Jet Alone can't stand up to the Angels, so it merely distracts them until the EVAs can give it an opening to retrieve the Angel's core. On the other hand, no other man-made war machine can stand up to it, and it regularly downs SEELE's aircrafts and mechs by the dozens.
• Retraux : Despite being created in the 21st Century, Jet Alone looks like something out of Showa-Era Super Sentai .
• Shout-Out : Despite being larger than Keebo by a wide margin, it's considered the little brother. Which is how the giant robots in Battle Fever J were treated.

Maya Ibuki, Makoto Hyūga, & Shigeru Aoba

• Bridge Bunnies : Their role at NERV, though Maya is the only girl among them.
• Genre Savvy : Shigeru is the first to realize that SEELE's unexpected military forces are actually a private army they assembled over time.
• Official Couple : It's confirmed that Maya is dating Ritsuko, and has been for a while.
• Only Sane Man : The three of them seem to be the only people in the whole series who understand just how weird the universe is.

Lorenz Keel

• Big Bad Duumvirate : He shares the role of Big Bad with Lilith.
• Breaking Old Trends : He's the only Big Bad not to be an Arch-Enemy of the Joestar clan in some capacity. Instead he's one to the Speedwagon Foundation due to killing their founder.
• He manages to get Adam's remains stolen from NERV to use for his own ends... Only for the next couple Angels to target SEELE's headquarters instead.
• He sends Mayumi to befriend the pilots and try to get them to talk about their work... Forgetting that he's coerced her to do so by implanting her with an S2 engine that he claims only SEELE can remove, which is a bad idea when one of the pilots is a Robot Girl that can fully scan Mayumi for abnormalities.
• Dramatically Missing the Point : Evidence pops up time and again that everything he thinks he knows about humanity is wrong. And yet all he does is double down and try to salvage anything of his plans.
• Evil Cannot Comprehend Good : As Speedwagon notes, Lorenz may be even more evil than Dio (who at least could claim to have a Freudian Excuse ) and doesn't truly understand the true power of humanity or how it is ever evolving.
• Evil Virtues : He does believe in the idea of trusting others unconditionally, fully intending to share godhood with the rest of SEELE after his Instrumentality plan is complete.
• Idiot Ball : Somehow it completely slipped his mind that Unit-01 was not the effigy of Adam he needed, nor did it have a human soul contained within it. Even worse, it somehow completely escaped him that Rei was not made with any of Lilith's cells.
• I Never Said It Was Poison : Inverted during Stars Are Eternal . A challenge to Shinji from an unknown individual refers to him as "that Joestar boy". But since Lorenz didn't know Shinji had a marital connection to the Joestar clan, it's clear he wasn't the one who sent it.
• Nice Job Fixing It, Villain : Rather than kill Robert E. O. Speedwagon so soon after he rejects enrollment into SEELE, Lorenz thinks it would be more pragmatic to wait a few days and then induce a heart failure to kill Speedwagon . However, it would have been more prudent to act quicker, as those few days were all Speedwagon needed to tell his Foundation about Lorenz and SEELE.
• Not Me This Time : When copies of the Zodiac Assassins attack the pilots, they quickly realize Lorenz can't be responsible.
• Smug Snake : He employs several clever plans to try and win against NERV and bring them to heel, but as it turns out, when Gendo is sufficiently motivated, he's even more of a chessmaster. All of Lorenz's schemes are easily seen through, dissected, and ultimately foiled.
• Sufficiently Analyzed Magic : He attempts to do this with the Stand virus, but it's ultimately subverted. Not even his successes are true Stand users, and they regularly get beaten even by non-Stand users.
• They Just Dont Get It : No matter how many times his worldview is challenged, Lorenz refuses to believe he could ever be wrong.
• The Unfought : The pilots never have to so much as lift a finger against him. He did have his own EVA named Black Ace in case it came to that, but by the time he got the chance to unveil it, the battle was already over.

"Stand:" Jet Hammer

• Animal Motif : Bulls, if it wasn't obvious from the name and image.
• Double Entendre : When Big Bull says he'll nail you, he means with the pointed end of his Jet Hammer. Nemesis had... Other connotations in mind. Big Bull: "I don't know who you're looking for, but you'd better move on before you get nailed!" Nemesis: "Too late. Me and my boyfriend were doing it earlier before I came here."
• Establishing Character Moment : He sets the tone for SEELE's agents. Despite claiming to be Stand users, they can't see Stands and they don't radiate Stand energy. At best their powers are Magitek , and even that leaves them very vulnerable to electrical shortage.
• Lightning Bruiser : To his credit, he does have incredible mobility for someone his size and he does hit like a truck. The problem is real Stand users can be even faster and hit even harder .

Blacker Baron

"stand:" super sexy fists of fire.

• Actually Pretty Funny : The Baron can't help but laugh at Shinji's remark after he slapped him. He also laughs at Nemesis deflating Big Bull's ego by taking his Double Entendre to its logical conclusion.
• Electronic Eyes : Shinji's electrical connections to machines lets him realize the Baron has artificial eyes.
• Hypocritical Humor : He greets Shinji as "Kawasaki" (a brand of motorcycle from Japan). He also points out that he doesn't judge people on their looks, since that would be hypocritical for an African-American.
• Everyone Has Standards : He's a foul-mouthed pimp looking to get paid, but he treats his partner Mathilda as an equal and never raises his voice or hand to her. And he doesn't flirt with the female pilots since they're below legal age.
• It's Personal : He doesn't appreciate Shinji pointing out that he's not a real Stand user (even though he isn't) and decides Shinji's earned a very special pimp slap.
• Mythology Gag : The Baron yells out the classic "Aw hell nah!" from his previous incarnation as The Black Baron when getting caught up in the tornado from Nemesis' One Step Closer Reanimation.
• Overly Long Name : Shinji notes how Baron's artificial Stand has a name as long as Funny Valentine's real Stand (for the record, both have five words in their name).
• Shout-Out : Noted in-universe when he fights Shinji. Since Shinji's Stand is lightning-based and the Baron's artificial Stand is fire-based, he compares the fight to Pokémon Black and White .

"Stand:" Iron Maiden

• Actually Pretty Funny : Much like the Baron, Mathilda laughs when Nemesis deflates Big Bull's ego at his "you're gonna get nailed" line.
• Carry a Big Stick : Her artificial Stand can take on this form for more blunt attacks.
• Dominatrix : Dresses the part and her weapon certainly gives her the same vibe.
• Obsessive-Compulsive Barkeeping : She's seen cleaning a single glass at the Bad Guy Bar she, Blacker Baron, and Big Bull are hanging out in. The Baron even lampshades it. Blacker Baron: "You ever see that stereotype in movies where the bartender is just always cleaning glasses?"
• The Voiceless : The only time she speaks is to call out her artificial Stand's name.
• Whip of Dominance : Her weapon's normal form, making it look like a cat tail when she's not using it.

"Stand:" Positron Blade

• Artificial Limbs : Necessary for how his artificial Stand functions.
• Expy : One wonders if Lorenz studied Kars when making Leo's cybernetics.
• Idiot Ball : His first target when he makes his move is Kaworu, since he seems to be the only one without powers. Except he forgets that as one of the Angels, Kaworu can manifest his AT Field better than most living beings.
• Lampshade Hanging : He's the first to note that the pilots seem to have a Shock and Awe theme with their powersets.
• Villain Forgot to Level Grind : Defied. He takes the time to train himself harder after his initial loss to the pilots.

"Stand:" Yanlong

• Curb-Stomp Battle : Asuka has no trouble handling her, making good use of the environment (since they were at a shore, Asuka was able to make use of Hamon's property of being easily channeled through liquid).
• The Easy Way or the Hard Way : She confronts NERV after the fight with Gaghiel telling them to leave all their gear or she'll be forced to attack. She's actually pleased when Asuka decides to fight.
• Hoist by Their Own Petard : Her own flames are turned against her when Asuka busts out the Scarlet Overdrive.

"Stand:" Onimaru & Jyuzumaru

• Gratuitous Ninja : His tech does allow him to act more like a traditional ninja, but his combat is more tropey.
• Not Quite Dead : Or rather, not quite taken out of commission. He manages to avoid getting his systems completely fried by Rei, then slipped away when the pilots left, evading the NERV agents looking for him.
• This Cannot Be! : His reaction when Shinji proves far stronger than SEELE initially predicted.
• We Can Rule Together : He makes an offer for NERV to join SEELE in exchange for all the energy resources they could want. Aigis flat out turns him down.
• What Measure Is a Non-Human? : He considers Aigis to be a mockery of life, which is a sentiment none of the heroes share.

"Stand:" Positron Blade & Tesla Blitz

• Bait-and-Switch : The conversation between Lorenz and an unseen member of his forces just prior to Max's appearance would make you think it's Max he was talking to. It was actually Nikolai.
• Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep" : Presumably his full name is still Maximillion Caxton, but he never goes by that in-story, even insisting the heroes just call him "Max".
• I Did What I Had to Do : He points out to Shinji that most of the artificial Stand users didn't have much choice when they signed on with SEELE. Given their cybernetics double as a sort of life support, it's likely he and the others were made to believe only SEELE could make their bodies whole again.
• Overshadowed by Awesome : He goes up against the previous girls from earlier JJNU parts (barring Twilight, who's long dead by this point, Applejack, and Starlight, who's busy restructuring and fixing her kingdom in the alter verse), and realizes he's outmatched despite his incredible power.

"Stand:" Snow Spikes

• Crippling Overspecialization : She's a master of systema, but focuses mostly on its ability to quickly disarm a foe. Unfortunately, Cadence doesn't even use weapons, being a karate master (karate literally translates to "empty hand").
• Designated Girl Fight : Her first fight is against Cadence. It doesn't go well for her.
• Nanomachines : How her artificial Stand operates, controlling ice crystals to create constructs.
• Pretender Diss : Cadence delivers her one regarding her ice powers. Candence: "I've seen colder winters in Miami."

"Stand:" Revolver Cannon

• He does it again when Rei makes a Gremlins reference regarding the Berserk Mutants getting their strength from eating other mutants in lieu of regular food. Rei: "That's what you get for feeding your monsters after midnight." Durga (laughing): "Oh man, that was a good one! Remind me to send that to the Digest!"
• Genre Savvy : He knows the Killseekers (the failures of SEELE's Stand virus experiments) are just Mooks that the pilots can wipe the floor with on the regular.
• Pretender Diss : When he makes his A God Am I quip, Mari rebukes him, pointing out the original user of Survivor is more god-like than him.
• Small Name, Big Ego : Not only does his name mean "invincible" in English, he thinks he has an unbeatable edge with his artificial Stand.

"Stand:" Tornado Drill

• Logical Weakness : As the most mechanized of the artificial Stand users, he's also the most vulnerable to electrical shortage, as proven by Rei hitting him with her Grand Judgement.
• Overshadowed by Awesome : Powerful as his Tornado Drill is, Rei only sees it as a spring breeze compared to her father Wamuu's Holy Sand Storm.
• Transforming Mecha : He can go from humanoid to jet form with just a thought. While in jet form, he often ferries Durga around.

"Stand:" The Juice

• Acrofatic : With a dash of Stout Strength , due to being a karate master.
• Beware the Silly Ones : He looks completely absurd, but Shinji notes that he's clearly not one to be underestimated.
• Big Eater : He's introduced consuming an entire plate of bacon.
• Pretender Diss : When he fights Keebo, he's smeared with the idea that a robot has a more authentic Stand than he does.
• Screw This, I'm Outta Here : He loses all interest in trying to scrap Keebo for fresh parts when it's clear the robot has more power than he does, and instead decides to run for it as fast as he can (which is actually pretty fast).

"Stand:" Gator Tooth

• Boring, but Practical : For as much as he sees his artificial Stand as just a glorified weapon, he still finds it perfectly serviceable.
• Connected All Along : He admits to having done time at Green Dolphin, and likely saw some of the events of Stone Ocean while there, as he notes to have witnessed powers the likes of which SEELE just can't replicate.
• Genre Savvy : He's the only artificial Stand user who's aware he doesn't have a real Stand.
• Leaning on the Fourth Wall : After he's taken down by Aigis, he mutters about his abilities getting nerfed, which is funny since he's originally from a video game.
• Uncanny Valley : Discussed when he notes Aigis' appearance. She's not amused in the slightest.

"Stand:" Zilong

• Fantastic Slurs : She refers to Asuka as a "half-breed" like it was an insult. This gets her the ire of both Asuka and Rei (who is a Half-Human Hybrid ).
• Gone Horribly Right : She was supposed to employ a Trojan Horse strategy to release all the prisoners NERV had taken by goading the pilots into attacking and capturing her and Ai Rin. It worked a little too well, as Asuka totally curb-stomped her for her initial insult.
• Logical Weakness : Her ice is easily countered by fire, with Asuka bursting through her attacks using the Scarlet Overdrive.
• Proud Beauty : She takes great pride in her looks, and hitting her in the face is a good way to press her Berserk Button .

"Stand:" Huanglong

• Always Someone Better : Rei shows greater manipulation of electricity than her.
• Even Evil Has Loved Ones : She does care about her older sisters, as shown when she shows concern over Fei Rin getting nailed in the stomach by Asuka.
• Idiot Ball : She thinks she has Rei deadlocked when the half-Gigan blocks both her blades with both hands. But any biology major will tell you that nerves cover the whole body, and as a half-Gigan, Rei can control every cell in her body. Cue Ai getting shocked by nerves coming from Rei's legs.

"Stand:" Tesla Blitz

• Bait-and-Switch : Just when it seems he's about to unleash his secondary form on the Dashells, he realizes Byakuya has already instigated Operation Heavy Rain and has to retreat.
• Final Boss : He's the last opponent faced by the pilots.
• Foreshadowing : His Super Mode was hinted early on during a talk between him and Lorenz.
• Genre Savvy : He comes off as more intelligent than Lorenz, managing to figure out Operation Heavy Rain and trying to stop it.
• Graceful Loser : Once he realizes Adam's World-Healing Wave has made his body whole and given him an actual Stand ability, he surrenders without issue.

"Stand:" The Twins

• Anti-Villain : He's the one responsible for freeing Lilith from the Central Dogma, but he then stays behind and lets the pilots know exactly what's going on with SEELE.
• Old Soldier : Deconstructed, as he feels he's grown too old, and wants to just rest after so much time fighting.
• Token Good Teammate : He's the only member of SEELE willing to give NERV vital information about their plans, having grown disillusioned with SEELE's plans for Instrumentality.
• Adaptational Gender Identity : In the original anime, the Angels were only ever referred to as "it." Here they are instead referred to as being either male or female.
• Adaptational Personality Change : In this universe, the Angels have more personality to them, with said personalities being based on and inspired by Going Another Way .
• Not Evil, Just Misunderstood : With the exception of Lilith, none of the Angels are actually evil, just trying to release Adam from confinement. Heck, with the exception of Sahaquiel, the Angels all try to do so with minimal collateral damage. Interestingly, NERV knows this trope is in play and tries to retrieve the Angels' cores, which can survive without their bodies, in order to reason with them.
• Spared by the Adaptation : Enforced. NERV is well aware that the Angels don't intend on triggering Third Impact, so they work to try and render them harmless by simply removing their cores before their bodies are destroyed. The only exception is Lilith, who actively wants to trigger Third Impact and thus must be eliminated.

• Mythology Gag : His appearance is identical to Unit-01's canon appearance. Justified, as Unit-01 was supposed to be an effigy of Adam.
• Precursors : His arrival on Earth was only to repair Lilith, who was suffering an unforeseen glitch. The resulting incident caused the original apes to splinter in evolution, creating the Gigans.
• Super-Empowering : Just before his body was destroyed by the Lance of Longinus, it created energy waves that had the same effect as the Stand virus. Misato didn't seem to be affected (though she was sealed in a lead container at the time) and the rest of the expedition died before it could be revealed if they obtained Stands. But Shining Armor did awaken a Stand, which he used to contain Adam's explosion.
• World-Healing Wave : He creates one after defeating Lilith, granting the world greater Stand potential and even making broken bodies whole, such as those of the artificial Stand users.

• Big Bad Duumvirate : She's working with SEELE to try and get free so she can kick-start Third Impact.
• Eye Scream : Adam nails one of her eyes using the American flag still left on the moon from the Apollo 11 mission, distracting her long enough to finish her using the Lance of Longinus.
• Gone Horribly Wrong : Her efforts to create a race subservient to her went counterinuitive to her creators' goals of uplifting sentient races to their level. If not for Adam's intervention, humanity could have been wiped out thousands of years ago when the Stand virus started spreading from the Cape York meteorite. Instead, a large portion of humans were rewired to be able to withstand the virus and gain power from it.
• Graceful Loser : Compared to her version from Going Another Way , Lilith accepts that she's lost against Adam and simply asks him to fix the damage she caused before dying.
• Impaled with Extreme Prejudice : She's pinned to her cell in Central Dogma by the Lance of Longinus, less to harm her and more to keep her contained for as long as possible.
• Noodle Incident : It's not made clear how she was captured, just that a whole lot of Stand users were involved.
• The Sociopath : A glitch in her programming caused her to be unable to comprehend emotions properly, leaving her incapable of creating humans in a way that allowed them to handle the Stand virus.

• The Baby of the Bunch : He's noted to be the youngest of the Angels.
• Genre Savvy : He at least suspected Lilith might have been trying to lure the Angels into a trap.
• Groin Attack : Ends up falling victim to this during his fight with Rei. While he doesn't have genitals in his crotch, Shinji notes he does have a nerve bundle there. Sachiel even thinks to himself how his eyes would be bugging out if he actually had eyes.
• Share the Male Pain : Shinji can't help but wince when Sachiel gets subjected to a crotch shot.
• Super Prototype : How he sees the newly modified Unit-02, noting how identical it is to Adam, albeit with blue armor and a shark motif.

• Animalistic Abomination : In addition to being compared to a dildo, she's also been compared to an eel with catfish whiskers.
• Lightning Lash : Her tendrils can be used as whips and are very capable of channeling electricity. Enough to hurt Shinji, who has resistance to electrical currents, but not enough to kill or even stun him.
• Wham Line : It was hinted by Sachiel that Stand users are what humans in this series are supposed to be, but Shamshel comparing Shinji's power to that of the Makers (as in Adam and Lilith's makers) lets us know that Earth was supposed to be very different.

• Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work : NERV was struggling to figure out how they'd retrieve Ramiel's core, and even considered the possibility that he'd need to be killed outright. Fortunately, SEELE's haphazard attempt at destroying him when his defenses were down broke enough of his body that Unit-05 was able to retrieve the core anyway.
• Barrier Warrior : He maintains a atrong AT Field at all times, which only the most powerful of energy-based weapons can penetrate.
• This Is a Drill : What he had made in his attempt to free Adam. It gets broken off by Unit-05 firing the positron rifle.
• Wake-Up Call Boss : As Kaworu notes, Ramiel's abilities shows the pilots can't rely on outright brawls to defeat the Angels. They need to rely on strategy as well.
• Wave-Motion Gun : He's not without offenses, having a powerful particle beam at his disposal. He normally only uses it if something gets too close while he's working, but he will extend the range if he detects an outside threat.

• Adaptational Intelligence : He's much smarter than his counterpart from Going Another Way , not having Hulk Speak and actually having a concrete plan for locating Adam.
• Attack the Mouth : Which is his weak point since that's where his core is. Once Asuka paralyzes him with Hamon, Jet Alone proves its worth by successfully grabbing the core from inside him (though with some help from Shinji and Kaworu).
• Crippling Overspecialization : He's largely confined to the water. Not that it's an issue since Zero Point has multiple waterways that connect to the GeoFront .
• Didn't See That Coming : He can render himself invisible to sonar, but it never occurred to him that NERV would already have other means of detecting Angels.
• Palate Propping : Asuka and Unit-03 are able to do this to Gaghiel using Hamon, giving Jet Alone a good shot at Gaghiel's core.

• Beat Them at Their Own Game : He gets a taste of his own medicine when Shinji and Asuka make use of sync training to counter him. He tries to merge back into one to disrupt them, but NERV was counting on that...
• This Is Gonna Suck : A post variation. After Unit-04 landed on him hard enough to completely maim his body, he spent the next six days behind an impenetrable AT Field healing. When he finally recovers, he notes that it was the longest six days of his life.
• Voice of the Legion : Befitting the Angel of Music, Israfel's voice sounds like it's in stereo, thanks to him speaking in two voices.

• Crippling Overspecialization : He can only properly function in a high temperature, high pressure environment, such as the magma chamber of a volcano. Once exposed to lower pressure environments, his body starts to expand to the point of exploding.
• Didn't See That Coming : He noticed that NERV was monitoring him and decided to wait until they came to him to ambush them. Little did he realize, NERV had no intention of capturing his entire body, and instead used an N2 mine to safely erupt the volcano he was in and drain the magma chamber.
• Ditzy Genius : He's a very intelligent Angel, but the problem is he's very clumsy. He was lucky that he wound up in an environment that can suit him when he reached Earth (that being an active volcano).
• Ludicrous Gibs : His body is reduced to this after it explodes upon leaving the magma chamber. Luckily, his core was retrieved before that can happen, so he survives.
• Oh, Crap! : His reaction once he realizes NERV intends to remove him from the volcano the easy way, by erupting it.

• Combat Pragmatist : She's physically the weakest of the Angels, so she prefers not to fight directly. She was waiting for a good opportunity to attack, and found it when SEELE created a blackout on Zero Point and the GeoFront .
• Didn't See That Coming : She's completely blindsided by Keebo showing up with Mega World.
• Genre Savvy : Despite arriving shortly after Sachiel, she knew better than to just rush in to try and save Adam, and instead waited to make sure she could handle NERV's forces.
• This Is Gonna Suck : Just as she's struggling with Mega World, Jet Alone wrenches open the plug hatches for the EVAs , and the pilots summon them remotely. Matarael quicky realizes how screwed she is.

• Driven to Suicide : Floating in space for what was likely centuries, only to suddenly lose contact with Adam over a decade prior, breaks Sahaquiel in such a way that not even his siblings can console him. He snaps out of it after his core is removed from his body.
• Honor Before Reason : With only Unit-01 and possibly Mega World capable of reaching him in space, he could have comfortably bombarded the GeoFront to free Adam. But his suicide run made it possible to defeat him after some difficulty, and at that point, Adam's remains had already been stolen by SEELE.
• Nice Job Fixing It, Villain : He's more an antagonist than an outright villain, but his suicide run solves NERV's conundrum of how they were going to approach him and retrieve his core.
• Person of Mass Destruction : He has enough mass that his body hitting the planet would wipe out Zero Point, and the resulting tidal wave would wipe out thousands over in Japan. Just trying to halt his impact makes the pilots feel like they're trying to hold back an earthquake, and that's with all five of them plus Mega World.

• Adaptive Ability : She's capable of rapid evolution far beyond what her siblings can do.
• Contrived Coincidence : Iruel had intended to infest the MAGI computer system in order to release Adam, but the part she infected was rejected by NERV in favor of a more efficient model. SEELE picked up the infected part instead and plugged it into their own computer network, right around the time they had access to Adam's remains. Iruel considers it extremely lucky it all worked out.
• Cover-Blowing Superpower : Not for herself, but for SEELE. Her attacking SEELE's computer network to locate Adam lets NERV know where Adam is located.
• Logical Weakness : As a microscopic Angel, Iruel can be easily combated by nanotechnology. Keebo is able to put his Stand to work and force her to manifest a large version of her core for retrieval.
• Mr. Exposition : Justified in that she was just inside SEELE's network, and is thus able to deliver the pilots vital information regarding Lorenz's schemes once they retrieve her core.

• Big Eater : Her body has a literal Black-Hole Belly called a Dirac Sea, and as a result, she has a huge appetite. She practically drools when she spots the huge crab-like mech SEELE deploys against Keebo and Mari, devouring it once they cripple it.
• Casting a Shadow : Her real body is a large shadow crawling along the ground, with her core being reflected as a spherical illusion above her body.
• Crippling Overspecialization : She's confined to the ground and can't elevate herself, which is bad since at the time she appeared, Adam was being held inside SEELE's flying fortress.
• I Ate WHAT?! : She suffers what she can only describe as the Angel equivalent to acid reflux when Mega World hits her Dirac Sea with singularity bombs . It causes her to cough up her core for retrieval.
• Oh, Crap! : She was trying to avoid catching the attention of the pilots while trying to find Adam. Unfortunately for her, her appetite gets the better of her and Keebo and Mari spot her as she goes to devour a crab mech they had just disabled. She freaks when she feels the pilots glaring at her afterward.
• Pragmatic Villainy : "Villainy" is a stretch since none of the Angels save Lilith are truly evil. Regardless, Leliel had begun to recognize that the pilots were all cases of Adaptational Badass , and so stuck to a strict diet to avoid catching their attention while she hunted for Adam to free him.

• The Assimilator : He's fully capable of taking over and controlling any machine through fungal infection. During the fight, he uses the sky citadel's defenses to slow down the pilots.
• Awesome by Analysis : He noted that Iruel had wound up on the sky citadel and stayed there for longer than should have been necessary, and reasoned that Adam was actually there rather than the GeoFront .
• Redundant Rescue : He's shocked to learn his attack on the sky citadel was unnecessary, as the pilots were also there to retrieve Adam.
• Serial Escalation : Meta version. Canon only gave us a taste of what Bardiel's capable of. In this story his fungal body is capable of engulfing the massive sky citadel.

• Absurdly Sharp Blade : His paper-like appendages are actually as sharp as swords, easily slicing through the mass produced EVAs .
• Actually Pretty Funny : When Zeruel's core ends up being exposed, Shinji makes a remark guessing if it's all muscle, which causes him to chuckle.
• Badass Pacifist : Being labelled as the Angel of Strength is no mere moniker, as Zeruel is physically the strongest out of his siblings. Even with this strength however, he'd much rather prefer to not fight, if at all possible.
• Bring It : Once he sees Shinji charging towards him, Zeruel has this to say. Zeruel: "At last... Now, show me the strength that has defeated so many of my siblings!"
• Pretender Diss : He's dismissive of the mass produced EVAs SEELE sends out, and for good reason.
• Worthy Opponent : By comparison, he considers Unit-01 and the other normal EVAs to be this.

• A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Read : And she knows it too. So she made sure to only visit Earth every few centuries while waiting for Adam's return in order to keep from going mad.
• The Empath : She's fully capable of reading any living mind and understanding their feelings.
• Humans Are Special : Peeking in on Earth every few centuries, she saw how wonderous their advancements can be and began to grow fond of them.
• The Unfought : Out of all of the Angels, she's the only one that isn't fought, instead willingly giving Shinji and Mari her core.

• Climax Boss : He's the last Angel fought by the pilots (Lilith is instead fought by Adam) before all attention turns to SEELE.
• Do Well, But Not Perfect : Cadence warns that too much damage to Armisael will cause his core to go off like a nuclear bomb and annihilate Zero Point.
• Glass Cannon : He's actually strong enough to pressure the EVAs , but not very durable. Once Shinji and Unit-01 hit their stride, they're able to deal a good amount of damage to Armisael and successfully expose his core.
• Taking You with Me : Not the pilots of NERV, but the ones selected by SEELE, having linked their minds to him so that any damage his body takes will weaken them.

Supporting Characters

Stand: winter wonderland.

• Misplaced Wildlife : Pen Pen is an erect-crested penguin, native to New Zealand. But Misato found him in Antarctica. Somewhat justified given his Stand, but that still leaves the question of how he got there in the first place.
• Shipper on Deck : It's implied that he deliberatly spooked Asuka in the shower to get her to show off for Shinji, and possibly get them closer. Shinji: "You know, there are better ways of being a wingman."
• Uplifted Animal : While he doesn't talk the way Morgana does, he is noted to be highly intelligent.

Toji Suzuhara

• Adaptational Angst Downgrade : He was able to keep his sister from losing her legs during the battle with Sachiel, greatly improving his attitude towards the EVA pilots.
• Demoted to Extra : In the original incarnation of Neon Genesis Evangelion , Toji Suzuhara became the Fourth Child, but fell victim to Bardiel and was heavily injured when Gendo activated the Dummy Plug on Shinji's Unit-01 to stop Bardiel while the Angel was possessing Toji's Unit-03 . Here, because Mari Makinami Illustrious and Kaworu Nagasi became EVA pilots instead, Toji's role in the story was greatly diminished.
• Dumb Jock : Inverted. Shinji notes that Toji is actually one of the smarter students in class.
• Official Couple : Once the pilots realize Toji is crushing on Hikari, they succesfully get the two together.

Kensuke Aida

• Ascended Fanboy : What he really wants to be, liking all things military and machine. The pilots point out it's not as easy as he's making it out to be.
• Laser-Guided Karma : Kensuke groans when he gets inside Unit-02 and the LCL ruins his camera, moments after Shinji finds out Kensuke was trying to film the fight in a live combat zone. Needless to say, Shinji has no sympathy for him.
• Love at First Sight : He gets a crush on Mayumi the second he lays eyes on her.
• Too Dumb to Live : Ironic given he's the nerd of his class, but getting way too close to the fight between Unit-01 and Shamshel, and convincing Toji to come along as well, was not a good idea. If Shinji hadn't called Rei in to pick them up, Kensuke could have easily gotten himself and Toji killed.
• Wrong Genre Savvy : While he does understand that the type of story he's in is one where heroes are made, it's still not a proper Mecha story, as the EVAs aren't actually robots but large Cyborgs .

Hikari Horaki

• Alliterative Name : As in canon, H ikari H oraki.
• Berserk Button : Any of her classmates putting themselves in danger, especially Toji. Less so the EVA pilots since danger is part of their job, but Rei does imply that anything outside that would still get them a tongue-lashing.
• Official Couple : The pilots successfully conspire to get her together with Toji, whom she's had a crush on for a while.

Mayumi Yamagishi

• Forced into Evil : SEELE convinced her that they're the only ones who can remove the S2 engine they grew in her body, but they'd only do so if she got them information on the pilots.
• Irony : She was sent to befriend the pilots, but it's Kensuke that she first winds up interacting with.
• The Mole : She's supposed to be this for SEELE (though not of her own free will), but she triggers red flags for NERV almost immediately, resulting in the pilots deciding to Feed the Mole until NERV can get her S2 engine removed and free her from SEELE's influence.
• Shrinking Violet : She doesn't think SEELE's plan to get the pilots to speak with her will work because she's this trope.

" A Cruel Angel's Thesis " ( 残酷な天使のテーゼ Zankoku na Tenshi no Tēze ? , " Zankoku na Tenshi no Thesis " in Japan) is the theme song of the popular anime Neon Genesis Evangelion performed by Yoko Takahashi . It is used as the opening to the series, and two instrumental versions of it are played in the finale episode, " Take care of yourself. " These are "The Heady Feeling of Freedom" and "Good, or Don't Be", scored for violin , piano , and guitar . "The Heady Feeling of Freedom" is a somber and reflective piece for bowed strings and guitar, while "Good, or Don't Be" is played to a light piano and guitar tone. Both are considerably different in feel from the more hard driving techno - dance original. A similar, but sparser, version can also be heard during the intermission between the two parts of Evangelion: Death and Rebirth .

According to the liner notes to the album Refrain of Evangelion , director Hideaki Anno had originally wanted to use music from Borodin 's Polovetsian Dances as the opening. The TV station ( TV Tokyo ) felt that audiences would be confused by a classical opening to an anime, and requested a change to a more typical or J-pop and upbeat song. The production of the result, "Zankoku na Tenshi no These", was handled by Toshimichi Ōtsuki . The original song included a male chorus, which was cut at Anno's request in order to "emphasize maternal affection". [ citation needed ]

In a survey by TV Asahi that was used to determine the results of a list of the 100 unforgettable anime theme songs, "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" made it to #55. [1] In a later survey on a similar program on TV Asahi, it was included as the #18 song amongst anime released during the 1990s. [2]

In 2009, original vocalist Takahashi recorded a new single, which included a remake of both this song and " Fly Me to the Moon ", the series ending theme, to tie in with the theatrical release of the second Rebuild of Evangelion film.

Oricon ranking [ ]

All of the songs have ranked in the top 25 of the Oricon Weekly Charts after they had been released. The original version of the single (paired with another song by Takahashi) stayed on the charts for 22 weeks, peaking at #27. [3] However, the version paired with CLAIRE's rendition of " Fly Me to the Moon " remained on the charts for 61 weeks after its release, and peaked at #17. [4] When this version of the single was re-released in 2003, it remained on the charts for 41 weeks, peaking at #9. [5] Takahashi's "2009 VERSION" release stayed on the charts for 14 weeks, peaking at #22. [6]

Since the song's initial release, many artists have covered the song. Heavy metal cover band Animetal included the track on their Animetal Marathon V album. [7] Versions by cast members Megumi Hayashibara ( Rei Ayanami ), Yuko Miyamura ( Asuka Langley Soryu ), Kotono Mitsuishi ( Misato Katsuragi ), and Megumi Ogata ( Shinji Ikari ) exist on various soundtracks and solo albums from the voice actors. Masami Okui included a cover on her cover album Masami Kobushi , and otaku tarento Shoko Nakagawa has a cover version on her first anime theme cover album Shoko-tan Cover: Anison ni Koi o Shite. . A trance remix is included on the Exit Tunes ' Exit Trance Presents R25 Speed Anime Trance Best 2 album, sung by "MAKI". [8]

The maxi-single of the same name, which included Takahashi's song "Moon's Labyrinth", was first released on October 25, 1995 under King Records' Starchild label. The song was later included in Takahashi's first album "Best Pieces", which was released on January 25, 1996.

It was the opening theme song for the 1995 TV anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion .

It was first introduced in Taiko no Tatsujin 3 on the arcade platforms and later in Taiko no Tatsujin: Tobikkiri! Anime Special on the console platform. Elevating the Art: Animenz's Transformative Approach to 'A Cruel Angel's Thesis

The song is an iconic song, for both anime and non-anime lovers equally. Having said that if there is anime OST, then Animenz would have or will be soon covering it on his piano. He describes that this song was a bit challenging but he still managed to make it his style, adding the orchestra style in the arranging.

The video was uploaded on YouTube on May 23, 2020, and it has 7.7 million views on the song. The original song is in key signature C minor and Animenz’s song is also in C minor. Where the original song is faster around 128 BPM, the Animenz’s song has 76 BPM. The time signature is 4/4.

The song starts with the lyrics and after fifteen seconds of the powerful high-pitched voice of Yoko Takahashi, other instruments join the song. This part of the song calling the protagonist to rise up and to have become a legend.

In Animenz’s song, he starts off with arpeggios. He said that usually while playing this song in front of a Live audience, he does make some changes while playing but kept this arpeggios part the same as he loved this part. Then he takes a short pause and starts with the first verse.

The original song starts with the beats of drums which is a memorable part, and with that, there are lyrics again. The song where the protagonist is Shinji Ikari, falling in love and earning for it. Shinji desperately needs to be loved and to the point where it causes him to take wrong decisions.

The singer hopes for Shinji to get better in love and find happiness. The song and the soothing voice of Yoko Takahashi bring out the essence and feelings of Shinji more promptly. Animenz’s takes a bit faster note. There is still the essence of the original composition but the bits of his own added varieties. The singer sings this in a higher pitch and the background sound seems to be in similar beats. The song here talks about the plan of the series. Then it talks about Shinji in the finale of the Eva-1 [spoilers ahead] in space and becomes a ‘God-like’ legend. Hence for shading the part where the boy will go forward and become a legend.

Animenz’s song is very upbeat and can be a stand-alone piano piece and itself. The song is arranged here that way and then added the left-hand accompaniment as Animenz didn’t quite understand the ‘mysterious guitar solo’ part even though he has listened to the song many many times. The hand synchronization is highly commendable and the way his fingers play on the piano is a treat to the eyes and ears.

Instrumental

There is an instrumental part before going to the next verse. It has similar beats following as the earlier but in the middle, there is a short part where it feels that the song has gotten slower but then it gets back on the similar beats fast.

Because the Animenz wasn’t about the original harmonics of the song so he added his own piano solo in this part, he used jazz to lyrical style here. He tried to be as minimalist with his approach, in doing so he did it by reducing two bass notes in the left hand as he wanted the attention to be on the upcoming choir.

Just after the instrumental piece the singer again starts to sing about Shinji. Some talk about the anime and his character in the anime. Singer also sings about wishing Shinji to have his own happiness. This also talks about Shinji’s relationship with the characters of the anime, while the biblical-themed story continues. The song again has a bit higher pitch before starting the chorus.

In Animenz’s version, he follows a similar approach as the previous verse. The atmosphere is a bit faster than the original song and the way his fingers dance on the song is admirable. This is one of the best versions of the song on piano ever made. The song is again played lightly on the piano.

The original song also starts as the previous chorus and with the same energy and beats the singer continues to sing the part. The lyrics have many references to the ongoing story from the anime. Shinji had behaviour to escape and abandoning pattern. But this time singer is praising Shinji and leaving his behaviour. Yet again ending in the part where the singer sings about Shinji becoming the future legend.

In Animenz’s this part is played with an amazing finger movement and the arrangement feels magical. With the gliding of the piano from right to left and differentiating the next piece. This has the same atmosphere and environment built as the original song. On YouTube, this is most times a repeated part of the song. Then the song has a similar feeling as the previous chorus.

There is a bridge in the song with a small stanza. This line has the singer telling Shinji that there is help. Again, raising Shinji to God status, and talking about making history. After this comes the final chorus.

Animenz’s version is also short as the original version. The speed and the song’s tempo are decreased in this part. The keys are played softly. And with the song the Animenz picks up the speed of the piano. Then he plays the short part with his right hand only. Then continues with both hands. Then goes on to play the final chorus.

Then comes the final chorus of the song. This is the short chorus as compared to the other chorus of the song. It talks to stay true to the desecrated symphony and not to betray the memories.

During the final repeat of the chorus, Animenz introduces an alternative harmonization in the left hand, strategically building towards the song's climax. At this moment, Animenz envisions the addition of a striking Tam-Tam, enhancing the impact of the composition. Following this turning point, the artist brings back the atmosphere reminiscent of the song's beginning. In a captivating twist, the right-hand arpeggios resurface, gradually ascending like an angel until they reach the highest possible piano key, C8.
