I Get Automatic Notifications When Web Pages Change: Here's How and Why I Do It

What is elementary os hands-on with the mac-like linux distro, stop giving companies your real email—do this instead, quick links, what to look for in an offline writing app, best offline writing app: google docs, best premium offline writing app: microsoft word, best chrome extension writing app: writer, best offline writing app for android: jotterpad, best offline writing app for ios: notability.

Every writer has horror stories about losing a document because of internet connectivity issues. But by choosing a writing app with offline support and automatic syncing (when online), you'll no longer have to write in fear.

We're looking for more than just garden variety word processors here---these apps need to work offline and offer some way to sync what you wrote once you're connected again.

  • Offline & Sync Support:  The processors we are recommending here all work offline, meaning you can work anywhere without fear of losing your text, formatting, or imported media. And once your device reconnects, your word processor should either automatically sync any changes between your device and your preferred cloud service or allow you to do so manually.
  • Standard Editing Functionality:  Good writing apps shouldn't limit their functionality just because you're offline, so make sure the app you choose still lets you edit, rename, move, copy and paste, or otherwise manage your documents regardless of your connection status. You shouldn't expect any different features or functionality from regular word processors here---it's just a matter of also having offline support.
  • Local Save Option:  The best writing apps should also offer either an automatic or manual local save option, just in case. When it comes to protecting your precious words, you can never be too careful. Redundancy is your friend!

Google Docs Offline Document

Google Docs (Free) offers full online and offline functionality, and can automatically sync when an internet connection is reestablished. When it's offline, you can still access saved documents and folders, edit and format documents, and access non-word-document files in Google Drive  like your spreadsheets and slideshows.

Google Docs is a pleasure to use, with its streamlined interface, efficient file organization options, and minimalist approach. It has all of the standard document editing tools you'd expect a word processor to have, from italics to grammar suggestions to voice-typing support, plus it makes it easy to share and export your documents when you're online.

To enable Google Drive's offline feature, you'll need to set it up online first as the feature isn't on by default. When you're connected, install and turn on the Google Docs offline Chrome extension . Then, open settings in Google Drive and check the box to sync your documents so you can edit offline, select the documents you want to save offline, and turn on the "available offline" option. You can even preview your offline files by clicking the circled checkmark at the top right of the page, clicking "Ready for offline," and then clicking "Offline preview."

Microsoft Word Document

Microsoft Word (starts at $69.99/yr) has long been the de facto word processor for students, office workers, and writers. Word is included with an annual Office 365 subscription, along with the rest of the Office Suite applications, like Excel , Outlook , PowerPoint , and OneNote . It works both online and offline automatically syncing upon reconnection with your Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS devices.

Word has an extremely powerful editing capacity and offers templates, along with grammar and stylistic suggestions to help you create great documents without stressing. It also enables you to collaborate with others in real time in a variety of languages, a feature that's great for students or collaborative authors. You can even use your stylus to write or draw in your document if you have a compatible device.

If you're working online, Microsoft Word's AutoSave feature is always on regularly saving your work. However, if you work offline (or if your connection just drops for some reason), there's no need to worry: simply keep typing and Word will automatically sync once you regain connection. Office 365's only offline caveat is that you need to go online at least once every 30 days in order to maintain your subscription and application access.

Writer Document

If you don't need all the bells and whistles of a comprehensive word processor and you want a distraction-free writing environment, Writer (Free, subscriptions start at $5/mo) is a stellar option. Writer is a minimalistic writing tool in the form of a Chrome extension that works both online and offline. It automatically saves anything you write, gives you an unlimited number of documents (with unlimited word count), and keeps them organized with folders. And, because it's a Chrome extension, you can use it on any computer.

In an effort to give you a distraction-free experience, Writer lets you go fullscreen, with no ads and no text editing (like bold or italicize options). You do have control over foreground and background colors, line spacing, typewriter sounds, and custom fonts, but everything else goes out the window so you can focus on your words and nothing but your words. Writer offers a real-time word count, thesaurus, and revision history for each of your documents. When your masterpiece is done, you can export it as text, a PDF, ePub, or save it to Google Docs , Dropbox , or  Evernote .

JotterPad Document

With JotterPad (Free, subscriptions start at $29.99/yr), you can write distraction-free anywhere your Android phone goes. The plain text writing app is great for any type of writing, though it is specially designed for creative writing like screenplays and novels. It's easy enough to use JotterPad when you're offline: simply create a new document (or open an existing one), type your words, and JotterPad will automatically synchronize them when your connection is restored.

JotterPad gives you access to standard word processor functions like text styling, markdown, a thesaurus and dictionary, undo/redo, and custom fonts. You can customize your writing experience with a dark theme, large document support, Bluetooth keyboard connectivity, document versioning, and your choice between local and cloud storage. You can also export your files as PDF, HTML, DOCX, and RTF to unlimited cloud accounts.

Notability Document

If you prefer to write on your Apple devices, you totally can with Notability ($8.99). The app is primarily designed as a note-taking app , but this design also makes it a powerhouse for writing longer-form documents like novels or screenplays, as it supports both keyboard typing and stylus writing (and impressive handwriting to text conversion if you don't have great handwriting). You can also record audio notes with the app, which is handy if you have an idea for your story and don't feel like writing it down at the moment.

Notability has iCloud support and works on iOS as well as macOS. When you're offline, Notability stores your files locally on your device. And, once you get connected again, you can choose to either keep your files on your device or move them to your preferred cloud service.

I've been using Essayist for years as for a while I only had an iPad as my main driver yet had to write papers for school and this was the only applicaiton that allowed me to do so on the iPad while not only maintaining all APA formatting requirements but making it even easier to cite articles with it's Google Scholar search function. I've also had a couple of times where i'd reach out to their customer support and they were prompt in responding with answers or even potential updates and timing. I highly recommend this app to every student at every level as I used it through my MBA and i'm now using it to complete a doctorate.

AMAZING tool for college students!

I am so glad I found this app because it has come in very handy in writing my essays for college. Essayist is very easy to use and supports many citation styles for all my essay writing needs. Has not let me down yet, thank you!!

It's worth it's weight in gold at least 10X over. I really don't know what I would do without this app. I use it for every single assignment and it's such a time saver and helps make sure everything is correct. I absolutely love it and recommend it to every single person I know in school.

Marvelous, Superb, and a Joy to Use

Essayist is an app designed with simplicity in mind. The team behind this application has eliminated the burden of the “essay criteria.” In its stead, we have a clear and perfectly structured canvas on which to begin writing without distractions. Upon purchase - which is worth every penny, you're prompted to choose your citation of choice. Your paper format and structure are based on this selection. Adding a works cited or bibliography is as simple as pressing a button. The app allows for chapters of books/magazines/ journals, websites, films, etc., and the user-friendly OS will enable you to seamlessly integrate those references as in-text citations, all with the press of a button. This app is a flagship creation of a solution to a long-standing problem. A problem that can perhaps be phrased as, “How can I have all the formatting and citations already done for me so that I can focus on just writing”? Essayist does just that.

Yearly・Save 55%

Still have questions, what is essayist, who is essayist for, how does essayist work, how much does essayist cost, can i use essayist on all my devices, which operating system do i need, is essayist available for android/windows, what citation styles does essayist support, can i generate references in essayist, does essayist have a user guide, subscribe to our newsletter, information.

Passionate about Windows, ChromeOS, Android, security and privacy issues. Have a penchant to solve everyday computing problems.

Your article although content seems thorough, I see now from other comments made here, my be too ” loose”. Alot of these comments , seems valid for information you are not supplying. So how about ,rewriting your article and allowing hour truth to come forward , as a more Direct approach. People are needing Pros and Cons. So we can see better choice. Answer each specified action, with same intention. Maybe with each, compare the others . So we can see what’s better for us.

I need to write edit my final draft for book. Straight words no graphics. Chapter headers. Storeing document on disk or.

I am 72 no technical knowledge , will be working from home so always plugged in. Will not need internet. Thank you for help.

Marilyn Maxxwell, if you look on the list at #5 iA Writer, you will see that it has built-in dictation mode. I haven’t tried that app yet so perhaps the dictation mode is not available in the free version but I would give it a try if I were you. Just thought you may have missed it!

Thanks to Beebom for taking the time to compile such a great list of apps for all of us writers! I plan on trying each one to see which suits my needs best. Although from your thorough descriptions, I have a feeling that Jotterpad may be the app for me. I mostly write articles and poetry but have just begun research for my first novel and finding the right app for this project will make the process that much easier. Regards, Cathy H.

This article is soo ANNOYING! WHICH programs work OFFLINE??? What about iWriter??? Why can’t you do your damn job and spell it out?!?! UGH! I can’t connect to the internet, I NEED to work offline? KThxbye

hi , pls if you found the way tell it to me

Can you please let me know when Scrivener has an option to install/download Chromebooks? I really want to get the app, but it’s not available for Chromebooks–yet

Scrivener will likely never be ported to ChromeOS. They took years to get a Windows version, and have made no indication they’re working on an Android port.

I’m also wanting to know when Scrivener will be available for my Acer Chromebook please…any update received yet?

Why thank you, Beedom, is that right? I need to a writing~

Marilyn Maxxwell, I recently purchased my first Chromebook. I’ve taken it everywhere and have found it very responsive to my needs, even when there is not an internet connection. There are Cloud based Google applications such as Documents, and you can also add this app directly to your Chromebook so that you can work offline.

I did notice that Grammarly only works if you are online, so I plan on writing my content anytime, then doing my review and edits while connected to wifi.

Hope this inspires you to look further for the truth.

…Thanks for such a thorough eval of available writing software for Chrome OS. I’m offering this as simple feedback, not as questions, so you might know better what potential readers need from you.

We bought 2 Chromebooks from HSN last fall, because they were touted as fully loaded, giving immediate access to everything online, and intuitively updating themselves, only to find them totally unusable without an independent internet connection.

We’re both elderly writers, artists, & photographers who love to travel so we have need of tools we can use equally well from a roadside park to a Beverly Hills hotel! I need to be able to make Tables of Content, bibliographies, endnotes, footnotes, & revision notes as I do a lot of scripture work. My husband, not so much. (He has me!) We both need dictation capabilities.

Although you mention dark mode and markdown formatting, as an “enduser” only, I have no concept of either though I looked them up online.

Thanks again. I’m glad I found your article.

What makes a good writing app?

Put simply, what makes a writing app good for you will depend on the kind of writer that you are.

  • If you’re an author , you might be interested in a writing app with outlining, planning, and formatting functionalities.
  • If you’re a student , you’re probably in the market for a writing app that blocks out distractions while you’re writing.
  • If you’re a screenwriter , you’ll want a writing app that’s specifically dedicated to writing screenplays.

Or, if you’re none of the above, worry not: that’s why we built this directory of writing apps. Whatever you need, we’ve gathered the outstanding writing apps of 2024 across multiple categories (drafting, editing, note-taking, etc) and platforms (Android, iOS, online browsers, etc) in one place. Feel free to use the filters to make your quest for the perfect writing app even easier!

So what are the best writing apps of 2024?

We can now put an end to the age-old debate of which writing app is best: Microsoft Word vs. Google Docs ?

The answer, of course, is neither! Hopefully, this directory will point you towards a much better match that actually fulfills your writing needs. We objectively evaluated each writing app based on four metrics.

  • Performance: How seamlessly does the writing app do what it’s purported to do? How good is the user experience, from top to bottom?
  • Features: How many bells and whistles are built into the app to augment its use?
  • Accessibility: Is it widely available on many different operating platforms (e.g. iOS, Windows, mobile, desktop, etc)?
  • Value: Is it worth the cost that it would take to download it?

Here are some general recommendations to give you a headstart.

Great list! I've been using Grammarly for a while now, and it's been a lifesaver. The grammar and spell-checking features are spot-on, and it has improved the quality of my essays. I'll definitely check out some of the other apps to write my essays mentioned here. Thanks for sharing!

As a language enthusiast and writer, Jotterpad caught my attention. The ability to express creativity and write poems and narrative essays with this app sounds wonderful. I don't mind investing in the paid version for additional features. Thanks for introducing me to it, and I can't wait to give it a try!

Hemingway was my favorite app for essays😩 I like the UI, but the desktop version is sooooo expensive. Overall, it's fantastic..

I can't imagine my college life without Evernote! It's perfect for organizing my notes and keeping track of assignments. I love the ease of use and the fact that I can access my notes from anywhere. Definitely one of the best apps out there!

Michele Graves

As a college student, I'm always on the lookout for useful essay apps. I've used Evernote before for note-taking, but I didn't know it had additional features for planning and organizing. I'll have to explore its Premium options.

I've been using Google Docs for a while now, but I'm open to trying other alternatives, especially offline essay apps, as I travel a lot. This list gives me plenty of options to consider!

I love the idea of using Hanx Writer for a nostalgic typewriter experience… It sounds like a fun way to get creative with my text. I'll give this app a shot with an english essay and see how it feels🙃

But we’ve also made sure they’ll make it easier to save, share, and sync all your documents and keep them safe, whether you need a desktop writing app for work, school, or play.

If you struggle to stay focused, we’ve tested some of the best free writing apps come with distraction-free layouts or gamification challenges to keep you in the zone. We’ve also reviewed those built for professional document creation, with advanced business features such as speech-to-text transcription and online collaboration tools.

Our picks cover the best apps for writing on the web, Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS - so you’re always ready whenever and wherever creativity strikes.

literature and latte Scrivener 3

Scrivener: best writing software for authors Scrivener is packed with all the features a novelist needs, helping you track plot threads, store notes on characters and locations, structure your work and (most importantly) get some serious work done. It's not a free writing app like the tools below, but it's well worth the investment if your budget will allow it.

1. FocusWriter

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

FocusWriter helps writers combat one of their biggest challenges: distractions. One of the best free writing software tools out there, it's specifically designed to let you just concentrate on your writing.

The stripped-back interface is deliciously sparse - ideal for when you just need to get your head down and write - and not dissimilar to a moderately powerful version of Notepad, featuring support for TXT, basic, RTF, and ODT files.

Even the toolbar is hidden until you actually need it. Just swoop your cursor to the top on the screen to reveal a barren menu, from basic formatting to themes and timers.

Features are light within the software, but FocusWriter isn’t made for heavy editing sessions. It’s designed to make the act of writing flow seamlessly onto the page.

Elsewhere, the writing app boasts the ability to add themes and your own background images, which can help you stay motivated.

The Daily Progress tool is a sweet extra, adding Duolingo-style gamification that lets you track your daily writing streak. For when it’s oh-so-easy to slip onto social media when you can’t find the perfect word, it’s a nice way to keep you within the app.

Available for Windows, Linux, and macOS, the writing software also comes as a portable download, no installation required. So, you can pop it on a USB stick and plug it into any computer you’re working on.

2. WriteMonkey

WriteMonkey is another piece of free writing software that cuts down on the clutter to deliver uninterrupted writing sessions.

The free word processor, cleverly described as zenware, is unbelievably pared back compared to more traditional writing apps.

There’s very little in the way of distracting ‘screen furniture’, which means you’re better positioned to concentrate on the writing process. And absolutely nothing else.

But don’t let that stripped-back approach fool you. As one of the best free writing apps, WriteMonkey is still rich with the sort of core features that matter to writers.

However, most options are hidden in a context menu (so you’ll need to right-click to view it). It also only supports TXT files, which may limit those looking to read, write, or edit across multiple formats. It is, at least, a portable download, letting you take it wherever you need.

If you’ve enjoyed Markdown, the simplified text-editing language that lets you format, annotate, classify, and link as you type, then great. WriteMonkey’s inner workings will instantly chime.

First-timers should spend a little time with this free writing software, to uncover that intuitive simplicity.

3. LibreOffice Writer

Writer, the open-source, free writing software, serves almost all general writing needs.

LibreOffice is a near-perfect example of free office software - a familiar, feature-rich take on the office suite. What the veteran software package lacks in Microsoft polish (its interface is undeniably old-fashioned, for starters), it makes up for in its price-point: free. For that, you get access to six tools: Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, Math, and Writer.

Earning it a slot on our list of best free writing apps is the fact that LibreOffice Writer packs the full editing toolbox.

This isn’t just a note-taking app for staving off distractions when you’re deep in the zone; it’s for when you’re in pure writer-mode.

If you’re at all proficient with Microsoft Word, you won’t have any problems using the Writer software. Layouts and functions are almost identical, and there’s support for DOC and DOCX file types, making it efficient to switch out of the Microsoft garden.

This free writing app is ideal if you’re hunting for a tool that almost perfectly replicates the Word experience without the cost.

4. Microsoft Word

When it comes to word processors, Microsoft Word is probably the baseline against which all others are compared. It’s the one most of us use at school, home, and work. It’s familiar, comfortable - and it’s available free on the web and mobile devices.

That may not be the best way to write your masterpiece (unless you’ve hooked up a Bluetooth keyboard). But it’s a great way to jot down ideas on-the-go. When we tested the browser-based version we found it could be a bit slow at first, and we were typing faster than the words appeared on screen. This settles down (mostly) after a minute or so.

Microsoft’s free writing apps on Android and iPhone had no such issues. Using these was velvety smooth. We especially appreciated the option to switch between mobile view and desktop view, so we could gauge how the document would appear in full-screen.

As with Google Docs, you’ll need to sign up with a Microsoft account. And, like Google, that also lets you use free versions of PowerPoint, Excel, and the like. While Word offers one of the best free writing app experiences, there’s no denying that the paid-for upgrade is superior, offering more tools, and a true desktop app.

Website screenshot for Author.

Author promises to make it easier to ‘think, write, and cite’. It’s a promise capably delivered, with a clean interface and bags of writing features designed to make it easy to go from first draft to final copy.

If you're an Apple user in search of the best free writing apps on macOS, this one demands your attention.

Concept Maps is one of the best features. It’s a great mind-mapping tool to visualize and lay down all your thoughts while they’re fresh in your head without constraint. You can worry about whipping them into shape later.

Students and report writers will appreciate Author’s ‘fast citing’ tools - speeding up assignment-writing by correctly adding and formatting citations, references, and contents.

A paid-for upgrade of the writing software that offers exporting options is available. However, unless you need automatic formatting on export, you can stick with the free version.

Website screenshot for Google Docs.

6. Google Docs

Google Docs is a great free writing platform for any writer. It’s an extremely clean, quick word processor available in the browser, on desktop, and phone and tablet apps. So, you can take notes wherever inspiration strikes.

Docs is more or less Google’s spin on Microsoft Word. The interface is a bit more simple than the professional office software - although it’s no less powerful.

You’ll find heaps of writing tools, including a pretty accurate speech-to-text transcription tool (just enunciate and don’t talk too fast). Keyboard shortcuts are very well-supported.

For best results, you’ll need an internet connection, though documents can be used offline. They’ll be synced, and in our experience, that happens swiftly behind the scenes.

To take advantage of the free writing app, you’ll need a Google account, which may be a deal-breaker for some - but that also opens up the rest of the Google-stuff in the Google-sphere, such as Sheets, Slides, and . With a free account, you get 15GB of storage, which should be more than enough for word documents. A Google One subscription upgrades your storage space, amongst other things.

Additionally, Google Docs is great if you want to collaborate with one or more other writers. Just be warned to stay in Google Docs for that, because exporting the data into Word or other writing applications can result formatting errors.

What's the difference between a writing app and an AI writer?

AI writers vs writing apps - what's the real difference?

Artificial intelligence is growing in a big way - and when it comes to writing, it's ChatGPT that's been snatching all the headlines of late, with its ability to generate short- and long-form content based on user prompts.

Generally, an AI writer will write your content for you, based on its current learning (although often without 'understanding' the context). A writing app simply lets you write your way, in your own voice.

Some platforms, such as Canva , have even integrated AI into its Canva Docs and Canva PDF Editor services. However. its Magic Write tool acts as a writing assistant, serving up suggestions and ideas, leaving real writers to work their magic on the content. Though usually hiding in the back-end, you can also find AI integrated in other ways across other the best PDF editor apps (and even the best free PDF editor apps, too).

As always with AI-generated content, whether it's the written word or an artwork masterpiece, human involvement is usually necessary and always desirable. Even if you're using the best AI writers out there, editing and proofreading is essential to give the content accuracy and emotional resonance.

How to choose the best free writing app for you

When deciding which free writing app is best, start by figuring out what sort of writing you want to do.

Do you need a handy tool for quick scribbles and jotting down ideas here and there, or are you using the writing software to write and edit an epic novel? Tools like FocusWriter and Write Monkey are great for getting thoughts on the page without friction.

It’s also worth considering if you need a writing app with a distraction-free design, so you can concentrate on what really matters to you. Again, FocusWriter performs admirably here, but as a result, you lose core typography and editing functions. Unlike LibreOffice, this isn’t the best Microsoft Office alternative if you need those tools. In that scenario, it may be worth considering looking at some of the best free office software , which includes MS Word-style apps, alongside other tools similar to Excel, PowerPoint, and so on.

Access is an important factor when using your writing software. A tool like Scribus needs to be downloaded to your machine. Lightweight apps like FocusWriter, however, offer a portable download that can be downloaded to a USB and carried with you.

Check what file formats your chosen writing app supports, too. While some let you create and edit the common DOC and DOCX files, others only allow TXT or RTF documents.

But most of all, it’s important to choose the best free writing app for your unique creative flow.

Testing the best free writing apps and software, we assess how easy it is to get your words down on the page with the least amount of friction. Portable writing apps rank high, because they let you use the program on whatever computer or laptop you’re using.

We also look at performance for its intended audience. For distraction-free writing apps, do they really foster focus? For word processor-style software, does it offer good formatting and editing options?

Most importantly, we expect to see free writing apps that are genuinely cost-free - no-one wants to stumble across hidden fees and charges in the contracts.

For most of human history, writing tools were pretty basic. While there were important advances in technology such as the invention of paper, the printing press, and later the typewriter, it was all just physical marks on a physical medium at the end of the day.

Word processing software was a huge leap forward, forever changing the process of drafting and archiving. The core technology of word processing has remained more or less the same even into the 21st century, but we have seen major advances in the organizational and brainstorming tools available to writers.

The result is our current landscape, in which hundreds (if not thousands) of writing apps compete for your attention, all claiming to revolutionize the way you write.

Which apps are worth your time? This article will help you decide, exploring a variety of writing apps to improve the way you brainstorm, draft, edit, and publish your work.

Whether you’re a student, knowledge worker, or professional writer, you’ll find something useful below.

Mind map in Coggle app

Overview: A digital mind-mapping tool that’s great for brainstorming.

Mind-mapping is a powerful tool for brainstorming writing and drawing connections between ideas. Traditionally, the technique involves drawing shapes on paper and connecting those shapes with branching lines.

These days, however, you aren’t confined to making paper mind maps. Coggle lets you create digital mind maps that are saved to the cloud and accessible across devices. And unlike on paper, you can edit and rearrange the mind maps as much as you want without worrying about running out of space.

If you’re struggling to come up with writing ideas, then Coggle could be the creative boost you need.

Price: A free version is available with up to 3 private mind maps (and unlimited public ones). The paid version starts at $5 / month and includes unlimited private mind maps, extra shapes, and additional formatting options.

Platforms: Web

Evernote app interface

Overview: A long-standing writing and note-taking tool that’s still valuable today.

Evernote was the first note-taking and personal knowledge management app I ever used. I recall how mind-blowing it was at the time to create a searchable archive of notes, articles, PDFs, and whatever else I found interesting.

Since then, Evernote has exploded in popularity. While many other apps have emerged that claim to replace or surpass it, it remains a powerful tool for writers.

You can use it to take notes, write outlines, or even produce full drafts of essays or articles. You can also use Evernote’s Web Clipper to quickly save articles and other web pages to read later or access offline.

If you’re looking to create a “digital notebook” to hold your ideas and fuel your creativity, Evernote is an excellent choice.

Price: Most features are free. Evernote Premium is $7.99 / month and includes additional features for searching, sharing, and organizing your notes. Students can get 50% off their first year of Evernote Premium .

Platforms: Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Web

Looking for more tools to take notes? Check out our guide to the best note-taking apps .

Google Docs

Google Docs app interface

Overview: The original collaborative, cloud-based writing app remains an invaluable part of many writers’ workflows.

Google Docs needs no introduction. When it was released, its collaborative, real-time writing and editing features were revolutionary. Now, such features are commonplace (even expected) in most cloud-based writing and note-taking tools.

Despite this, I’ve continued to use Google Docs for all of my professional writing, and it’s still the tool I recommend for everyday writing work.

The interface is clean, it automatically saves your work to the cloud, and the backing of Google means it’s unlikely to disappear (something you can’t say about the latest and greatest writing apps).

If you want a writing tool that just works, Google Docs is the app to use.

Price: Free

Platforms: Android, iOS, Web

Cold Turkey Writer

Cold Turkey Writer app interface

Overview: If you’re procrastinating on a writing project, Cold Turkey Writer will force you to focus.

Your computer is a powerful tool for writing, but it also includes lots of potential distractions such as social media, video games, Netflix, and Wikipedia rabbit holes. Cold Turkey Writer eliminates these distractions.

When you launch the app, you tell it your writing goal. This goal can be either a number of words or an amount of time spent writing. After you’ve done that, Cold Turkey will block every app on your computer (internet included) until you’ve met your writing goal.

This might seem extreme, but that’s why it’s so effective. When you remove other options, you’ll be amazed how much writing you produce.

Note that while Cold Turkey Writer is an excellent tool for producing distraction-free drafts, it doesn’t include many formatting options. So you’ll need to use it in conjunction with an app like Google Docs or Microsoft Word if you plan to print or publish your writing.

Price: Most features are free. A one-time payment of $9 (CAD) will get you additional formatting and theming features.

Platforms: Mac, Windows

Scrivener app sales page screenshot

Overview: A popular tool for long-form writing projects such as novels, screenplays, and dissertations.

Long-form writing presents unique challenges compared to writing essays, blog posts, or other short pieces. One of the main challenges is organization. How do you keep track of what you’ve written? And how do you arrange your writing into a cohesive whole?

Scrivener aims to solve these problems. It includes all the standard word processing features you’d find in an app like Word or Docs, but it also includes features for organizing, navigating, and editing your writing projects.

You can quickly see all your project’s chapters, sections, or scenes at a glance. And you can quickly rearrange these items to help you put together your final manuscript.

Other handy features include:

  • A virtual “corkboard” to help you plan your writing structure
  • The ability to split documents into smaller chapters or sections
  • Tools for displaying reference material such as images, PDFs, or web pages (without having to leave the Scrivener app).
  • Options for exporting your work as a PDF, Word Doc, or even a Kindle ebook.

Price: One-time purchase of $49 for a single desktop license (Mac or Windows). Students and academics can receive a discounted license for $41.65. The iOS app requires a separate purchase of $19.99. A 30-day free trial is also available.

Platforms: Mac, Windows, iOS

Novlr app interface

Overview: Aimed at novel writers, Novlr includes extensive tools to organize and track your long-form writing projects.

At first glance, Novlr seems similar to Scrivener. And while the two apps do share a lot of features in common, Novlr is different enough that it’s also worth considering.

To start, there’s the Novlr interface. Compared to Scrivener, it’s much more minimalist. However, don’t mistake this minimalism for a lack of features and power.

Novlr lets you see an overview of your writing sections and chapters as you work, and it constantly saves your writing (much like Google Docs). There’s also a “Focus Mode” that hides the interface so you can concentrate on the current chapter or section.

Most of the above features are available in Scrivener. Where Novlr really stands out is in its style and grammar checking features.

As you write, Novlr will show you suggestions for fixing grammar, spelling, and even making your writing more concise. And unlike a lot of writing apps that only mark errors or suggest corrections, Novlr includes explanations for each of its suggestions. This way, you can learn to be a better writer as you use the app.

Overall, I think Novlr is a better tool if you’re focused on novel or fiction writing, while Scrivener is better if you plan to write nonfiction. Scrivener’s tools for organization and research material are superior to Novlr’s, while Novlr is hyper-focused on being the best tool for novelists (and no one else).

Ultimately, both apps have free trials, so I encourage you to test out each and see which is better for your long-form writing needs.

Price: $100 per year or $10 month-to-month. A 2-week free trial is also available.

Platforms: Web (also works offline and on mobile devices)

Byword app interface

Overview: A simple Markdown writing app.

Byword is a Markdown text editor that aims to help you write faster. If you’re not familiar with Markdown, here’s a good explanation . Basically, it’s a way to write plain text that you can then quickly convert into HTML (saving you the hassle of manually writing HTML).

If that last paragraph made your eyes glaze over, don’t worry; there are plenty of other apps in this article for your needs. But if you regularly write for the web, learning Markdown (and using a Markdown editor such as Byword) can save you a lot of time.

Byword lets you write documents in Markdown and then export them as HTML, Rich Text, or a PDF. You can also export your writing directly to a publishing platform such as WordPress, Medium, Blogger, or Tumblr. If you already use Markdown (or want to learn it), then Byword is a tool you should look into.

Price: One-time purchase of $10.99 (Mac app) or $5.99 (iPhone and iPad app)

Platforms: Mac, iOS

Written? Kitten!

Written? Kitten! app interface

Overview: Get some extra writing motivation with pictures of kittens, puppies, or bunnies.

Writing the first draft is always the hardest part. If you need some motivation to get those words onto the page, then check out Written? Kitten!

This web app shows you a picture of a cute animal of your choice (kitten, puppy, or bunny) every time you write a certain number of words.

It’s a great tool if you need to write an essay of a certain length or if you have a goal to write a set number of words each day.

750 Words app showing writing statistics

Overview: A private, online journal that helps you build a daily writing habit.

“Write every day” is a common New Year’s Resolution, but it can be tricky to stick to. If you’re looking for an app to help motivate you, check out 750 Words .

As the name implies, 750 Words is an app that helps you build a habit of writing at least 750 words (about 3 pages) per day. When you log in to the app, you’ll see nothing but a place to write. As you type, the app keeps track of your progress and lets you know when you’ve passed 750 words. The app also saves your work so you can review it later, and everything is completely private.

In addition to the writing features, 750 Words shows you insights about your writing such as how many days in a row you’ve written, your average words per minute, and the mood you were in (based on the words you use).

Whether you’re looking to write as a creative exercise, to learn more about yourself, or because some stranger on the internet like me told you to, 750 Words is a great way to get your thoughts onto the page.

Price: Free for 30 days, then $5 / month.

Daily Page app sales page

Overview: Daily Page sends you a new writing prompt each day and gives you a distraction-free space to write.

Don’t know what to write about? Daily Page provides a solution.

Each day, the app emails you a different creative writing prompt. Just click the link in the email, sign in to the app, and write your entry. If you prefer free writing, the app gives you the option to do that as well.

In addition to the writing prompts and motivation, a subscription to Daily Page also gives you access to several writing courses on topics such as screenwriting, blogging, and storytelling. While I can’t vouch for the quality of the courses, it’s an interesting feature that you don’t see in a lot of other writing apps.

Price: $4.99 month-to-month or $47.88 / year.

Grammarly app interface

Overview: An app that checks (and automatically corrects) your grammar, spelling, and more.

The school system generally does a terrible job of teaching grammar. Combine that with the fact that English spelling is an illogical disaster, and it’s no wonder that we all struggle with writing “mechanics” to one degree or another.

The grammar and spell check tools in your word processor can help, but they still miss a lot of mistakes. This is where Grammarly comes in.

Grammarly checks your writing for mistakes in spelling, grammar, and usage. When it finds a mistake, it will highlight it and explain what’s wrong. You can then choose to accept the correction or ignore it.

To get the most out of Grammarly, I recommend installing the browser extension . With this, Grammarly will automatically check your writing everywhere from your email to Google Docs to online forms. Prefer to write offline? Grammarly also has standalone apps that you can paste your writing into, as well as extensions for Microsoft Word.

Even as a professional writer and editor with a degree in English, I use Grammarly every day. It speeds up the editing process and finds mistakes that spell check tends to miss. While its suggestions aren’t correct 100% of the time, it’s still a valuable tool for any kind of writing (except maybe poetry).

Price: All the features I described above are free. You can upgrade to Premium for $29.95 / month to get additional features such as vocabulary suggestions, plagiarism checks, and readability suggestions.

Platforms: Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Web. Browser extensions are available for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. A Microsoft Word extension is also available.

Hemingway interface

Overview: An app that helps you make your writing easier to read.

When you’re writing a draft, the thoughts often come out of your head in a jumble. During the editing process, it’s your job to make this jumble understandable. To help you out, I recommend the Hemingway app .

Hemingway’s goal is to remove anything unnecessary from your writing. This could be complex sentences, passive voice, adverbs, or big words. While none of these are “wrong” to use, removing them often makes your writing easier to read.

Whenever Hemingway encounters something it thinks you should remove, it will highlight it. Next to each highlight, you’ll see a suggestion for improvement. This could be anything from using a simpler word to shortening a lengthy sentence.

In addition to stylistic suggestions, Hemingway also displays some useful statistics about your writing, including readability, word count, and estimated reading time.

If you purchase the desktop version of Hemingway, you’ll get additional features such as the ability to publish directly to WordPress or Medium and the option to export your writing as HTML, Markdown, Word Doc, or PDF.

For maximum editing power, combine Hemingway with Grammarly.

Price: Web version is free. Desktop versions (Mac and Windows) are each $19.99.

Platforms: Mac, Windows, Web

Blurt interface

Overview: Blurt helps you build a daily writing habit while removing distractions and teaching you to be a better writer.

Do you love the writing experience of Medium, but are looking for some additional tools to help you focus? Then Blurt could be the app you’re looking for.

To start, Blurt asks you to define the project you’re working on. Options include a journal, blog post, book, newsletter, or essays. After you’ve defined your project, Blurt prompts you to set a daily writing goal for it. You can even specify the time of day you want to write, and Blurt will send you an email reminder to do it.

Once you’ve set your goals, it’s time to write. The Blurt editor is very minimal, with most formatting options hidden by default. As you write, Blurt offers spelling and readability suggestions. The readability suggestions are similar to those in Hemingway, including adverbs, difficult to read sentences, and even cliches.

If you find yourself getting distracted while writing, Blurt lets you launch a “Writing Session.” This session will challenge you to write for a set amount of time or to write a certain number of words. And if you struggle with self-editing, Blurt can blur your words as you type. This helps keep drafting and editing separate.

Finally, Blurt gives you the option to export your work to Medium, Twitter, Facebook, or Markdown (and it also supports Markdown syntax while writing).

Price: 15-day free trial, then $14.99 / month.

Quetext app interface

Overview:  A free, web-based plagiarism checker.

Plagiarism is a serious offense both in school and the professional world. Not only is it wrong, but it could damage your grade (or even get you expelled or fired in extreme cases).

Luckily, plagiarism is easy to avoid if you properly cite your sources and use a plagiarism checking tool like Quetext . Quetext uses advanced natural language processing to compare your writing to billions of documents across the internet. If the app detects any potential plagiarism, it will highlight it in your document.

Even if you don’t think your document contains plagiarism, it can’t hurt to check (particularly when there’s an app to make it so easy).

Price:  The Free plan includes 5 plagiarism checks per month (enough for most students). For unlimited plagiarism checks, citation suggestions, and priority support, you can upgrade to the Pro plan for $9.99 / month.

Platforms:  Web

Coffitivity

Coffitivity app interface

Overview: Recreate the sounds of a coffee shop in the comfort of your home.

If you enjoy writing in coffee shops, then you should give Coffitivity a look. The app recreates the sounds of a coffee shop within your web browser. This allows you to feel like you’re in a coffee shop (and potentially focus better) without leaving your house.

In a time when many coffee shops are closed to the public, this is an especially valuable service. I like to mix the app’s sounds with instrumental music to create a more immersive experience, but that’s up to you.

And, of course, you’ll need to provide your own coffee.

Price: Free. For $9 / year you can get access to additional coffee shop sounds.

Brain.fm app interface

Overview: An app that uses specially-designed music to help you focus.

Listening to music is a common way to focus on all kinds of projects, writing and otherwise. However, listening to music while writing can be distracting, particularly if the music contains lyrics or interesting melodies.

Brain.fm solves this problem. The app uses a variety of compositional and sound design techniques ( backed by science ) to create music specifically for focusing.

When you sign in to the app, you tell it what your goal is: focus, relax, or sleep. Once you select your goal (which would typically be “Focus” for writing), you tell the app how long you want to focus. Brain.fm will then start playing music designed to help your brain enter a flow state .

I find Brain.fm to be especially helpful if I’m procrastinating or struggling to finish a difficult project. I recommend combining it with the Pomodoro technique for the ultimate focused writing experience.

Price: $6.99 / month or $49.99 / year. A free, 3-day trial is also available.

For more music to help you focus, listen to our study playlist .

Zotero app interface

Overview: A free tool for organizing academic sources and generating citations.

When you’re writing a thesis, dissertation, or research paper , it can be tricky to keep track of your sources. You could keep a list of them in a text document, but that relies on you remembering to update it. And when it’s time to cite your sources, it could take hours to assemble that list into a properly formatted bibliography.

To make it easier to manage your research, use Zotero . Zotero is an open-source app for collecting, organizing, and citing sources of all kinds.

Once you’ve installed the Zotero browser extension , you can quickly pull citation information from library pages, JSTOR, online journals, and just about any other digital source you can think of. The result is a database of sources that you can quickly search and reference.

And when it’s time to submit your final draft, Zotero can generate a bibliography or references section in the citation format of your choice (APA, Chicago, MLA, and thousands more ). The app also includes tools for collaborating on papers with other researchers, and you have the option to store all your Zotero data in the cloud.

Platforms: Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, Safari

Honorable Mentions

Below, you’ll find a few other apps that I use regularly in my writing work. I didn’t give these their own sections because they’re either too specific to my work or have a waitlist. But I still think they’re super useful and worth a look:

  • Capitalize My Title – A web app that converts your titles to the proper “title case.” I use it to check the title and subheadings of my articles, but you can also use it to properly capitalize the titles of essays or research papers.
  • Roam Research – The app I use to take notes, journal, and record article ideas. While extremely powerful, I didn’t give Roam its own section because there’s currently a waiting list to access the app. You can learn more about Roam in our full review .
  • Docs to Markdown – This Google Docs add-on lets you export your work as HTML or Markdown. I use it when I’m transferring an article from Google Docs to WordPress. But it could also be a useful tool for copywriters or web designers.

Your Brain Is the Ultimate Writing App

I hope this article has helped you find an app to make your writing process more efficient, pleasant, or focused.

Ultimately, writing apps are just there to enable you as a writer. To get better at writing, you need to practice it, get feedback, learn, and repeat.

Apple Journal

There’s no ipad app yet, but here’s what’s new with journal in ios 18.

Avatar for Ryan Christoffel

One of Apple’s newest apps, Journal, arrived late last year in iOS 17.2 as an iPhone exclusive and with unique value to offer. The standout feature, personalized suggestions, made it easier to just start writing by bringing in other device activity, like places you’ve visited, photos you’ve taken, and podcasts you’ve enjoyed—all automatically.

The good news in iOS 18 is that Journal is getting a variety of nice upgrades that build on the app’s strong foundation. The bad news is that it’s still iPhone-only. No Journal for iPad or Mac, and if you dreamed of journaling in your Vision Pro from Bora Bora, you’re out of luck.

Here’s everything new coming to the Journal app for iPhone in iOS 18.

Expanded rich text formatting

When Journal launched, the only rich text formatting it offered was bold, italics, underline, and strikethrough. But in iOS 18, the options have expanded to include

  • text colors
  • bulleted, dash, or numbered lists
  • block quotes

The addition of text colors is especially nice, as you have 120 different color options to choose from and it can be applied on a per-character basis. Next, iOS needs to bring true text color support to Apple Notes.

Journal text formatting

Audio transcripts

Audio recordings have always been a feature of Journal, but now in iOS 18 you can view transcripts of that recorded audio. So if you prefer to get your thoughts out by speaking rather than writing, you’ll still have a written record to go back to and search for.

Search and sort tools

I’m not sure how the first version of Journal shipped without a search feature, but thankfully that’s been remedied in iOS 18. You can now search right from the main view, and with the aid of category filters too. In addition to typing for what you’re looking for, you can filter by the following content types:

  • Music & Podcasts

Another new tool to manage your growing library of journal entries is a Sort option. By default, entries are all sorted by date, but there’s now the nice option to sort by Moment date instead. If you sort by Moment date, your journal entries will follow the chronological timeline of when events happened in your life, rather than when you actually chose to write about them. For example, if you went to Disney World last week but didn’t journal about it until later after getting home, Journal will know that and sort your entries accordingly.

Widgets for your Home Screen or Lock Screen

Journal widgets

There are a variety of widget types now available for Journal.

For your Home Screen, you’ll find New Entry and Streaks widgets:

  • New Entry displays a writing prompt, such as, “What do you wish people in your life knew about you?” and offers a button to quickly start a new journal entry. You can also tap a button that cycles through different prompts until you find the right one.
  • Streaks simply shows you how many days your current writing streak has lasted.

On your Lock Screen, Journal has even more options:

  • Journaling Suggestions
  • Audio Recording
  • State of Mind

Most of these offer quick ways to create a new entry with a select content type.

State of mind and mindful minutes

Journal state of mind

Journal now taps into the mindfulness tools introduced in watchOS 10 last year, allowing you to add your current state of mind to an entry. Like in the Apple Watch’s Mindfulness app, Journal will ask you to choose how you’re feeling at the moment, with options ranging from very pleasant to very unpleasant, and everything in-between.

You can also now have Journal automatically log your time spent writing as Mindful Minutes inside the Health app.

Insights screen

There’s a new Insights view in Journal that provides an overview of your journaling practices. You’ll see things like:

  • Current writing streak
  • Total words written
  • Days journaled
  • Places visited

Perhaps my favorite part of Insights is the Calendar view. This enables seeing all of the days you’ve journaled and easily jumping to a previous day with a tap. Days you journaled will be marked with a purple dot.

Rounding out a strong iOS 18 update is print support. Yes, journal entries can now be easily printed with just a tap, or exported as PDFs. The feature is pretty basic, and doesn’t necessarily result in the prettiest printouts, but it’s there if you’d like it.

Do you use the Journal app? What are you most excited about from the iOS 18 update? Let us know in the comments.

RV GPS App: 10 Essential Features

By Roadtrippers

An RV GPS app is an indispensable tool that goes beyond mere navigation. Apps like these are designed to provide direction for unique RVing needs, such as RV-safe navigation, overnight camping options , right-sized gas stations, and more.

When it comes to the sea of RVing tools out there, it’s important to look for the one that offers all the features needed for RV-safe navigation. That way, you won’t be juggling between apps over the road.

In this post, we’ll explore the 10 most important features to look for in an RV GPS app.

1. RV-Specific Routing

This one can’t be understated. Avoiding low bridges, narrow roads, and restricted areas is key for a safe RV trip. The right RV navigation app will factor in your specific height, weight, and length restrictions to avoid non-RV-friendly routes.

Low clearances, steep grades, sharp curves, and small gas stations are a few examples of the things that drive RVers batty — and they can also cause serious damage.

That’s why your app of choice needs to factor your camper’s dimensions into its routing.  Roadtrippers is an RV GPS app that does this by gathering the specific details of your rig and planning a route to match.

2. Campground and RV Park Locator

Roadtrippers features a comprehensive directory of RV-friendly campgrounds and parks that you can drop right into your planned route.

We even have a new feature called Autopilot™ that’ll plan an RV-friendly trip with campground options for you. Simply answer a few questions about the type of camping trip you want, and Autopilot™ does the rest.

Our app also features one of the largest campground databases on the planet. You can filter RV parks by price, amenities, type of place, big rig accessibility, WiFi , cell coverage, rating, and more to find the campgrounds that best suit you.

3. Points of Interest for RVers

What fun is a road trip if you don’t make a few stops at quirky roadside attractions, historical sites, and natural wonders? That’s why your RV GPS app should pack in points of interest.

And then there’s the practical stuff like RV service stations, repair shops dump stations, and potable water refill points. Your RV navigation app ought to have the goods here too.

Roadtrippers features a large library of RV-centric stops for any trip.

4. Offline Maps

RVers flock to national parks, public lands, and other remote areas where cell service can be unreliable.

When cell service goes, so too while your RV navigation unless your app provides offline maps.

This feature allows you to download a fully functional map of your route that’ll keep running in the deadest of dead zones. You can even download maps of entire regions to make those areas fully searchable for RV-friendly stops along the way.

5. Fuel Station Locator

Large gas stations and truck stops are RVers’ friends. Roadtrippers is an RV app that features thousands of stations and a filtered search feature so you can find RV-friendly gas stops along your route.

6. Trip Planning and Management

RVing is one of the most affordable ways to travel if you plan ahead. RV navigation tools can help with this by estimating fuel costs, efficient routes, and stops that match your budget.

Roadtrippers lets you build a trip from a sea of options that match any budget. Our Autopilot™ tool can even build a custom RV trip based on your selected budget and interests.

7. User-Friendly Interface

The best RV navigation apps let you easily drag and drop stops along your route interactively. The map and directions should also be easy to read.

Look for RV GPS apps that provide voice-guided navigation. This way, you can build your trip and safely follow it in the same app.

Roadtrippers RV GPS is one app that does all the above.

8. Safety Features

Breakdowns are a bummer and getting stranded over the road stinks. The best camping apps have built-in features to get you help wherever you wander. Roadtrippers Roadside is an add-on offering that’s built into our app. Roadtrippers Roadside provides RVers with peace of mind by offering towing assistance, trip interruption insurance, propane refills, battery help, and more. RV apps can also be vital safety tools for alerts about sharp turns, steep grades, and speed limit changes. Sometimes, the road ahead is fine for a car but challenging for an RV. The right RV GPS app will warn you ahead of time.

9. Community and Social Features

These are things like user reviews, tips, and recommendations that add real-life context to your RVing journey.

For example, when you stay at an RV park, it’s uber-helpful to know how former guests have rated cleanliness, WiFi speed, amenities, scenery, and much more.

It’s even better when your RV GPS app offers recommended itineraries based on real-life trips that people have taken.

Roadtrippers does all of this. Locations featured in our app offer reviews, information on cell coverage, campground quality, and much more. Our trip guides showcase some of the best itineraries users have taken around the country. And our maps feature the quirky roadside attractions we know folks love.

10. Free Overnight Parking Locations

Roadtripping RVers often need overnight breaks to catch a few zzz’s before safely getting back on the road. Instead of paying for a campground, many opt for free overnight parking at places like Wal-Mart, Cabelas, and Cracker Barrel.

However, overnight parking is not guaranteed at every store location. That’s why the best RV navigation apps offer user-generated information about places to park overnight.

The Roadtrippers app features over 16,000 free places to park your RV on your way to your destination.

Overnight parking locations

RV GPS apps have revolutionized the way camping folk travel. Features like RV-safe navigation and campground locating are a couple of examples of the features that make these apps a must-have. Roadtrippers is an RV navigation app built by RVers and for RVers to have the essential features needed to navigate this special lifestyle. Try Roadtrippers Premium for free .

Use the Office offline installer

To help with issues you might encounter when installing Microsoft 365 because of slow speeds or unreliable connections, as a first step download the Support and Recovery Assistant tool. (For information about this tool, go here .)

Offline installer manual steps

If the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant didn't help, follow the steps below that are specific to your plan. You need to be connected to the internet to download this installer file, but once that's done, you can then install Microsoft 365 offline on a PC at your convenience.

The steps below differ if your Microsoft 365 product is part of an Office for home or Office for business plan, so you need to select the correct tab for your product.

Select your plan

Step 1. download the offline installer from your account portal.

To download the offline installer, go to www.office.com . If you're not already signed in with the Microsoft account associated with your copy of Microsoft 365 or Microsoft 365 do that now. If you're signed in with a different account, sign out of that and then sign in again with the correct Microsoft account.

Note:  If you're trying to install Microsoft 365 that you got through your work or school and you already signed in with your work or school account, don't follow these instructions. Select the Office for business tab from above instead.

Select Install Office . If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, you'll also need to select Install Office > on the Installs page.

In the Download and install window, select Other options .

Check the box Download an offline installer and select the language you want to install the Microsoft 365 apps in. Select Download .

When you're prompted, from the bottom of your browser window, select Save (in Edge), Open (in Internet Explorer), Open when done (in Chrome), or Save File (in Firefox). The file will begin downloading on your PC.

Once the download is complete, open File Explorer and locate a new virtual drive, for example (D:) . This drive contains the Microsoft 365 installation files. If you don't see the new drive, locate the image file you downloaded and double-click it. The new drive should appear in your directory.

Note:  If you already have a drive labeled (D:) , Microsoft 365 creates a virtual drive with the next available letter, which would be (E:) (as shown in the next step below). Save the image: You can also choose to save a copy of this virtual drive to a thumb drive or disc for later use.

Step 2. Install Office

Select the Microsoft 365 folder from the virtual drive and then double-click either the Setup32.exe to install the 32-bit version of Microsoft 365, or Setup64.exe to install the 64-bit version to begin the offline installation. If you're not sure which version is right for you, see Choose the 64-bit or 32-bit version of Office .

Select the virtual drive which may be named D or the next available letter

When you see the message, You're all set , you can access your Microsoft 365 applications.

After your Microsoft 365 installation is complete, you need to activate Microsoft 365. Be sure you're connected to the Internet and then open any Office application, such as Word or Excel.

In most cases, Office is activated once you start an application and after you click Accept to agree to the License terms. If you need activation help, see Activate Office .

After activating Office and before you start using it, make sure you have the latest update.

In any Microsoft 365 app, for example Word, open a new or existing document, then select File  > Account .

From the Update Options drop-down list box, select Update Now .

Select Update Now for the Update Options drop-down

If you have a Microsoft 365 for business product you can use the Microsoft 365 Deployment Tool (ODT) to download and install Microsoft 365 or Microsoft 365 offline. The tool is designed for enterprise environments and runs from the command line, so the steps are more complicated--but they'll still work for installation on a single device.

You must have a Microsoft 365 or Microsoft 365 license assigned to you to install and activate the Microsoft 365 apps. To check if you have one, see What Microsoft 365 business product or license do I have?

Step 1 - Download and install the Office Deployment Tool

Create a folder on your hard drive and name it ODT . For this example, we'll create it on the c:\ drive, like so: c:\ODT .

Download the Microsoft 365 Deployment Tool from the Microsoft Download Center . Select Save As and save it to your downloads folder.

In your downloads folder, double-click the Office Deployment Tool exe file to install it.

If you see the User Account Control prompt that says, Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? , click Yes .

Accept the Microsoft Software License Terms, and then click Continue .

In the Browse for Folder dialog, select the ODT folder you created in earlier, and then click OK .

Step 2 - Download and install Office

The drop-down list below contains detailed steps that show how to download and install the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise or Microsoft 365 Apps for business.

If you have a Microsoft 365 Apps for business or Microsoft 365 Business Standard plan, you need to download the Microsoft 365 Apps for business version. For all other plans, download the Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise version. See the following if you're not sure which version to install:

To find out which Microsoft 365 plan you have, see What Microsoft 365 business product or license do I have?

If you're not sure how to decide between 64-bit or 32-bit, see Choose between the 64-bit or 32-bit version of Office .

  • Which version of Office do you want to install?
  • Install the 32-bit version of Office365_ProPlus
  • Install the 64-bit version of Office365_ProPlus
  • Install the 32-bit version of Office365_Business
  • Install the 64-bit version of Office365_Business

Step 1: Install the 32-bit version of Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise

Open Notepad on your computer.

Copy and paste the following into a blank text file in Notepad:

Note:  The <Language ID> in the code above is for the English version "en-us". You need to change what's between those quotes if you want to download Office in a different language. If you're not sure what that is, use the URL for this topic to see your language ID, for example, "support.office.com/< this is your language ID >/article". In the text you just copied, replace "en-us" in this line, <Language ID=" your language ID " />.

Save the file as installOfficeProPlus32.xml in the ODT folder.

Click Start , type run , and then select the Run Desktop app to open it.

In the Run dialog, type the following exactly as shown below.

c:\odt\setup.exe /download installOfficeProPlus32.xml

A blank dialog box appears with c:\ODT\setup.exe in the title bar. The Office installation files should start downloading to the ODT folder on your computer.

It can take a while to finish downloading and it may look like nothing is happening while the files are downloading. You'll know the installation is complete once the dialog box closes on its own, and a new folder called Office appears in the ODT folder you created earlier.

After the files have finished downloading, open the Run dialog box again. This time type the following.

c:\odt\setup.exe /configure installOfficeProPlus32.xml

The install should begin.

Step 2: Activate and update Office

After your Office installation is complete, you need to activate Office. Be sure you're connected to the Internet and then open any Office application, such as Word or Excel.

Next, open an existing document or create a new document and select File > Account . Office should automatically activate.

After you activate Office and before you start using it, make sure you have the latest updates. In the same document, select Update Options and in the drop-down list box, select Update Now .

If nothing happens, close the application and repeat steps 2 and 3 to update Office from the Account page.

Leave us a comment

Were these steps helpful? If so, please let us know at the bottom of this topic. If they weren't, and you're still having trouble installing Office, tell us what you were trying to do and where you had difficulties. We'll use your feedback to double-check our steps and provide additional information.

Step 1: Install the 64-bit version of Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise

Save the file as installOfficeProPlus64.xml in the ODT folder.

c:\odt\setup.exe /download installOfficeProPlus64.xml

c:\odt\setup.exe /configure installOfficeProPlus64.xml

Step 1: Install the 32-bit version of Microsoft 365 Apps for business

Save the file as installOfficeBusRet32.xml in the ODT folder.

c:\odt\setup.exe /download installOfficeBusRet32.xml

If you see the User Account Control prompt that says, Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? , click OK .

c:\odt\setup.exe /configure installOfficeBusRet32.xml

Step 1: Install the 64-bit version of Microsoft 365 Apps for business

Save the file as installOfficeBusRet64.xml in the ODT folder.

c:\odt\setup.exe /download installOfficeBusRet64.xml

c:\odt\setup.exe /configure installOfficeBusRet64.xml

Surgeon General: Why I’m Calling for a Warning Label on Social Media Platforms

An illustration of a girl lying in bed in a darkened room. The glow from her phone illuminates her pillow with a warning sign, a triangle with an exclamation point inside it.

By Vivek H. Murthy

Dr. Murthy is the surgeon general.

One of the most important lessons I learned in medical school was that in an emergency, you don’t have the luxury to wait for perfect information. You assess the available facts, you use your best judgment, and you act quickly.

The mental health crisis among young people is an emergency — and social media has emerged as an important contributor. Adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms, and the average daily use in this age group, as of the summer of 2023, was 4.8 hours . Additionally, nearly half of adolescents say social media makes them feel worse about their bodies.

It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents. A surgeon general’s warning label, which requires congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe. Evidence from tobacco studies show that warning labels can increase awareness and change behavior. When asked if a warning from the surgeon general would prompt them to limit or monitor their children’s social media use, 76 percent of people in one recent survey of Latino parents said yes.

To be clear, a warning label would not, on its own, make social media safe for young people. The advisory I issued a year ago about social media and young people’s mental health included specific recommendations for policymakers, platforms and the public to make social media safer for kids. Such measures, which already have strong bipartisan support, remain the priority.

Legislation from Congress should shield young people from online harassment, abuse and exploitation and from exposure to extreme violence and sexual content that too often appears in algorithm-driven feeds. The measures should prevent platforms from collecting sensitive data from children and should restrict the use of features like push notifications, autoplay and infinite scroll, which prey on developing brains and contribute to excessive use.

Additionally, companies must be required to share all of their data on health effects with independent scientists and the public — currently they do not — and allow independent safety audits. While the platforms claim they are making their products safer, Americans need more than words. We need proof.

NEW YORK (AP) — Student editors at the Columbia Law Review say they were pressured by the journal’s board of directors to halt publication of an academic article written by a Palestinian human rights lawyer that accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and upholding an apartheid regime.

When the editors refused the request and published the piece Monday morning, the board — made up of faculty and alumni from Columbia University’s law school — shut down the law review’s website entirely. It remained offline Tuesday evening, a static homepage informing visitors the domain “is under maintenance.”

The episode at one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious legal journals marks the latest flashpoint in an ongoing debate about academic speech that has deeply divided students, staff and college administrators since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

Several editors at the Columbia Law Review described the board’s intervention as an unprecedented breach of editorial independence at the periodical, which is run by students at Columbia Law School. The board of directors oversees the nonprofit’s finances but has historically played no role in selecting pieces.

In a letter sent to student editors Tuesday and shared with The Associated Press, the board of directors said it was concerned that the article, titled “Nakba as a Legal Concept,” had not gone through the “usual processes of review or selection for articles at the Law Review, and in particular that a number of student editors had been unaware of its existence.”

“In order to preserve the status quo and provide student editors some window of opportunity to review the piece, as well as provide time for the Law Review to determine how to proceed, we temporarily suspended the website,” the letter continued.

Those involved in soliciting and editing the piece said they had followed a rigorous review process, even as they acknowledged taking steps to forestall expected blowback by limiting the number of students aware of the article.

In the piece, Rabea Eghbariah, a Harvard doctoral candidate, accuses Israel of a litany of “crimes against humanity,” arguing for a new legal framework to “encapsulate the ongoing structure of subjugation in Palestine and derive a legal formulation of the Palestinian condition.”

Eghbariah said in a text message that the suspension of the law journal’s website should be seen as “a microcosm of a broader authoritarian repression taking place across U.S. campuses.”

Editors said they voted overwhelmingly in December to commission a piece on Palestinian legal issues, then formed a smaller committee — open to all of the publication’s editorial leadership — that ultimately accepted Eghbariah’s article. He had submitted an earlier version of the article to the Harvard Law Review, which the publication later elected not to publish amid internal backlash, according to a report in The Intercept .

Anticipating similar controversy and worried about a leak of the draft, the committee of editors working on the article did not upload it to a server that is visible to the broader membership of the law journal and to some administrators. The piece was not shared until Sunday with the full staff of the Columbia Law Review — something that editorial staffers said was not uncommon.

“We’ve never circulated a particular article in advance,” said Sohum Pal, an articles editor at the publication. “So the idea that this is all over a process concern is a total lie. It’s very transparently content based.”

In their letter to students, the board of directors said student editors who didn’t work on the piece should have been given an opportunity to read it and raise concerns.

“Whatever your views of this piece, it will clearly be controversial and potentially have an impact on all associated with the Review,” they wrote.

Those involved in the publishing of the article said they heard from a small group of students over the weekend who expressed concerns about threats to their careers and safety if it were to be published.

Some alluded to trucks that circled Columbia and other campuses following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel, labeling students as antisemites for their past or current affiliation with groups seen as hostile to Israel.

The letter from the board also suggested that a statement be appended to the piece stating the article had not been subject to a standard review process or made available for all student editors to read ahead of time.

Erika Lopez, an editor who worked on the piece, said many students were adamantly opposed to the idea, calling it “completely false to imply that we didn’t follow the standard process.”

She said student editors had spoken regularly since they began receiving pushback from the board on Sunday and remained firmly in support of the piece.

When they learned the website had been shuttered Monday morning, they quickly uploaded Eghbariah’s article to a publicly accessible website . It has since spread widely across social media.

“It’s really ironic that this piece probably got more attention than anything we normally published,” Lopez added, “even after they nuked the website.”
