Creative writing prompts about animals.

Today’s post includes a selection of prompts from 1200 Creative Writing Prompts . Enjoy!

Animals have played a significant role in literature throughout history.

They appear in poems and stories, and plenty of nonfiction works have been written about animals and humans’ experiences with animals.

From E.B. White’s  Charlotte’s Web to Jane Goodall’s (aff links) books on primatology, authors and readers alike have delighted in writing and reading about animals.

And it’s no wonder. We humans have forged strong bonds with animals. Our pets are like family members. In fact, Americans spend billions a year on their animal companions. Billions more are donated to wildlife preservation, animal welfare advocacy, and conservation efforts.

Naturally, animals fit comfortably into the stories we tell. Today’s creative writing prompts pay homage to our animal friends by inspiring a writing session that features animals.

two puppies are seperated at birth. then reunited at the dog pound, when they are taken from their owners

Melissa Donovan

That’s a great one! Thanks, James.

CG

Why would an animal lover want to write about hunting?

Why wouldn’t they? There are animal lovers who hunt, and some animal lovers might have opinions about hunting that they want to express.

ProWriter

Animal lovers who hunt sort of doesn’t make sense because if they love animals, then why do they kill them?

I have known people who love their cats and dogs but go duck hunting. Most people who love animals also eat meat.

Margaret

These look cool! TOTALLY using one!!

Writing Prompt: Write About an Animal Encounter

Adding an animal to your story can reveal a lot about the humans who inhabit your world. Whether a beloved pet or a rogue turkey, adding an animal encounter to a scene is surprisingly humanizing.

Writing Prompt: Write About an Animal Encounter

Writing Prompt: Animal Encounter

First off, let me say that today’s post is not about dead dog stories. Old Yeller and Where the Red Fern Grows are still etched as traumatic episodes in my childhood story history. If you love those stories and want to tell them, go for it. The goal of this writing prompt is to have fun and reveal character. See if you can write an animal encounter today.

When I was a kid, my family had dogs, cats, bunnies, gerbils and hamsters, parakeets, and other birds. My grandparents had an evil duck (no seriously, his name was Beelzebub) along with their assortment of dogs and stray cats, a parrot, and anything else that wandered into their yard.

As a result, many of our family stories involve animals. My Uncle Rod had a 4H cow he named Beef Jerky. There was the time I almost accidentally fed my best friend Heidi to my grandparents’ Great Dane Tiger Lily. Those stories have shaped who we are and how we view ourselves because an animal complicated or enhanced our lives. Here are some of the benefits of inviting an animal into your story.

Animals Add Conflict

When I was ten, I invited my best friend Heidi to meet the Great Dane Tiger Lily. Heidi did not like dogs. Tiger Lily did not like little girls she didn’t know.

After I led my friend into Tiger Lily’s yard, Heidi was only saved by some quick-thinking by one of my uncles who threw Heidi over the fence and out of reach. (Yes, she eventually forgave me.)

Everything in the encounter created conflict. My friend’s aversion, the dog’s unpredictability, my own stupidity. Adding an animal to a scene is a great way to create conflict.

Animals Add Personality

Animals are great for stories because they can have huge personalities of their own or they can draw out the personality of those they interact with. Think about your favorite stories with animals—from Curious George to Eddie the Dog from the sitcom Frasier . Animals can reflect their owners or they can be a contradiction that amplifies character.

An encounter with an animal in the wild can produce a range of responses from terror (hello, bear or mountain lion) to overreaction (hello, small skunk!). Think about what kind of animal would best fit with your character and scene to show off a personality.

Animals Humanize Your Characters

Blake Snyder’s screenwriting book Save the Cat is named after a scene beat designed to make the audience love a character. Snyder suggests that every story needs to have a moment of vulnerability for the character, whether it’s created through saving a stranded kitten or sticking up for an underdog.

A character who seems to be a terrible person might be humanized by caring (even if reluctantly) for her neighbor’s cat while he's in the hospital.

Find a way to set up an animal encounter that leaves the character vulnerable and the audience will swoon.

Add an Animal

Animals shift the tone of a scene or story, adding an element of unpredictability. Whether an animal becomes your character's loyal companion, viciously attacks, or simply wanders through a scene, adding an animal is a great way to shake things up. When's the last time you added an animal to your stories?

What are your favorite examples of animal encounters that enhanced a story or revealed character? Let us know in the comments .

For your writing prompt today, write a scene with an animal encounter. Will the encounter end well or poorly? Will your character like the animal or not? What conflict will the animal spark?

Choose any animal you like, or pick one of these to get started:

Write for fifteen minutes . When you're done, share your writing in the comments , and be sure to leave feedback for your fellow writers!

Articles About Animals: Top 5 Examples and 7 Prompts

Animals connect to humans and the environment. To help you with your article writing, see our top pick of articles about animals and prompts to guide you.

I am a certified animal lover, my family cares for 14 dogs and seven cats. They are primarily rescues, and we do our best to give them a merry home. When people learn this about us, they have the same question: “Isn’t it exhausting?”

Aside from helping humans cope with trauma, such as in the case of service animals, they are also a food source. They are necessary and, thus, must be protected to keep our environment stable. Elaborate on the different views on animals such as welfare, farming and testing. To inspire your writing style, take inspiration from the best argumentative essays .

1. Issues Regarding the Welfare of Assistance Dogs by Amanda Salmon

2. optimising puppy socialisation short and long-term effects of a training programme during the early socialisation period by lisa stolzlechner, 3. the flaws and human harms of animal experimentation by aysha akhtar, m.d., m.p.h, 4. the last panda in latin america mexico to decide what happens next by associated press, 5. ligers, zorses, and pizzlies: how animal hybrids happen by jason bittel, 7 prompts for articles about animals, 1. best house pets in the world, 2. why can’t wild animals be pets, 3. protecting endangered animals, 4. global warming and animals, 5. importance of livestock animals, 6. weirdly cute animals, 7. the pros and cons of raising pets.

“Assistance animals increase the quality of life enjoyed by people with various disability types… In contrast to protecting a person’s quality of life, laws and policies fail to address the quality of life of assistance animals.”

Salmon believes that improving assistance dogs’ quality of life is just as important as those of humans. To prove that, the researchers discuss the gaps in the laws pertinent to assistance animals while highlighting their roles in helping, supporting, and protecting persons with disabilities.

The researchers explain various welfare issues, one of which is the difficulty in dog training. Some train dogs for hours without considering the animals’ health. Another is the lack of monitoring assistance animals for those with mental disabilities or financial problems. In their conclusion, the group calls for changes in relevant laws to accommodate persons with disabilities and assistance animals to better meet their needs.

Looking for more? Check out these essays about veganism and essays about animal testing .

“The ability to habituate to diverse stimuli without fear, or to overcome any fear quickly during the socialisation period, is key for dogs’ ability to cope with the diversity of stimuli encountered in a human world.”

This article presents the results of an experiment by Stolzlechner that aims to show the effect of exposing three to six-week-old puppies to various tests. Through their methods, they conclude that the treatment group is more resilient to stress, has no fear of a novel object, has a calmer demeanor despite loud noises, and has a faster problem-solving rate than the other group. However, the program doesn’t have a lasting effect, and Stolzlechner believes they need more research.

“…animal experimentation is typically viewed as the default and gold standard of preclinical testing and is generally supported without critical examination of its validity.”

Akhtar’s purpose in this article is to prove animal experimentation’s unreliable and harmful effects through research and other studies. He explains that the evaluation of a drug for a particular disease or injury will vary among species because they have different physiology, genetics, pharmacokinetics , anatomy, and behavior.

The author explains that misleading claims on drugs tested by animal experiments harm people through clinical trials. Additionally, safe and genuinely effective drugs and medical procedures are often rendered useless by these false and unsubstantiated claims.

“Xin Xin, the granddaughter of pandas gifted by China, is childless, in menopause and, at 32, very old. It could be the end for pandas in Latin America altogether if Mexico’s government balks at the price of a new panda.”

The article focuses on Xin Xin, the only surviving panda in Latin America. She’s the last member of the giant panda family that China gifted to Mexico during its “ panda diplomacy ” period. However, the Chinese government now demands a fee for loaning their pandas, which the Mexican administration refuses to pay. Aside from the Mexican government negotiating with China in taking the loan program, the author also mentions that  Xin Xin’s ovarian tissue can be preserved to continue reproduction.

“…every hybrid is a window into how evolution creates new species.”

Bittel divides his article into four parts to explain what hybrids are and the process animals go through to produce these hybrids. Different species of animals don’t always breed or mate, but when they do, they produce hybrids that both have the traits and characteristics of their parents.

A familiar hybrid is the ligers, introduced in movies like Napoleon Dynamite (2004) . Bittel notes that due to climate change, hybrids will become more ordinary. He also mentions that mixed species can be weak, prone to health problems, or unable to reproduce. But hybridization also has benefits, such as pesticide resistance, that help animals survive and multiply.

Best house pets in the world

There are different opinions on the best pets, often because people use varying factors, such as allergies, access, and space. In your article, stick to reliable statistics to discuss the world’s most prominent pet species and why people pick them. Include excerpts from other articles, interviews, or research findings that help explain why these animals are considered the best. For help with this topic, read our guide explaining what is persuasive writing ?

Some might say that no matter how much you care for a wild animal, their instincts could return at any moment, which is why many people do not want to keep them as pets. Use this prompt to discuss the differences between domesticated and wild animals.

Add relevant statistics such as the number of people who keep wild animals as pets and incidents where these wild animals end up attacking their owners. You can also explain why some people want wild animals as pets. Then, discuss why a wild animal should not be kept as a house pet.

For this prompt, research which animals are endangered and why they are near extinction. Discuss the research method, gathered information, and government or organizations’ protection plans for these animals.

Examine the effectiveness of these plans and include your thoughts on how they could be improved. In your conclusion, make a call to action on what your readers can do to help protect endangered animals in their way.

See our guide to grammar and syntax to improve your writing.

Global warming affects all integral parts of the ecosystem, such as animals. This prompt delves into the severity of global warming and its effects on animals. Use updated research findings to support your statements.

For instance, while some animals adapt to global warming by changing their body sizes and migrating, others are dying because they can’t alter their physical characteristics and can’t relocate from their original habitat. Because of these factors, there’s a lower chance of reproduction that has a ripple effect, inevitably affecting humans.

In your essay, identify the most important livestock animals and explain why people need to continue raising them. Discuss the benefits of livestock animals to people and the economy and what will happen if livestock animals vanish. For an interesting argumentative article, look at both sides of the argument. Include information from organizations that support livestock and animal farming, and also from those who oppose it.

Weirdly cute animals

Animals have different features, some unique ones that make them stand out. An example is the pink fairy armadillo from South America. It’s the smallest armadillo species with a pale rose color. For this article prompt, pinpoint some of the weirdest but endearing animals worldwide. Speak about their origin and distinguishing characteristics that attract attention.

Some choose to raise pets, while others avoid it like the plague. To better dissect this subject, interview two individuals, one with a pet and one with none. Then, list the advantages and disadvantages of raising or not raising house pets based on their experiences. Consider an individual’s lifestyle and advise them on what the perfect pet will be for them. You can also give tips on how the audience can enjoy raising pets. For help editing your articles, we recommend using the best grammar checker .

Free Creative Writing Prompts #19: Animals

Cartoon characters, pets, creatures from the wild, and even ourselves make animals an important part of our existence. From an early age we are treated to the view of certain animals demonstrating good and certain demonstrating evil (through Disney movies and other cartoons). We have the pets that we love and those that we fear. We have seen the humans around us act like animals and we may have even felt such instincts oursleves. These free  creative writing prompts  deal with our connection with animals and our perception and interaction with them. So, sit for a spell, use your brain, and put those animal instincts off to the side while you write these things :).  Free Creative Writing Prompts: Animals

7. Who was/is your least favorite childhood pet and why? What are some of the things that turned you off of this pet? Do you blame the pet? The breeders? The owners?

8. You have become a bird! Pretty sweet, huh? How does the world look to you now that you can fly through the air at great speed? What are the things you have to worry about now that you no longer have bills to pay ;)?

9. If you could have any animal as a pet (that you have not previously had in your life) what would it be and why? Talk about some of your adventures with this pet and see how he or she adjusts to your current lifestyle.

10. You have become a zookeeper! You take care of pretty much everything in the zoo from the penguins to the elephants. What is it like being on the other side of the cage (assuming that you aren't already a zookeeper)? Talk about one of your typical days.  And there you have it, you animal you. I hope that you've enjoyed these animalistic free creative writing prompts. Take some time to think about the ways in which you are an animal (driven by emotion and instinct) and the ways in which you are a conscious being (using reason and thinking about the world in context). Perhaps you can use these writing exercises to go a little bit closer to the conscious being side. Or maybe you'll just use 'em to write a kids book. Either way is fine by me. Happy writing!  Bonus Prompt  - In a bit straight out of "The Island of Dr. Moreau" you are creating new animals by adding different parts from different animals together. What kind of crazy combinations have you created? How are you dealing with the consequences of bringing something semi-unnatural into the world?

These resources practice different purposes of writing, using animal themes. First, the child is asked to describe a chosen pet: his appearance, character and behaviour. They read an example, to show them how to structure their work and then write their own simple description.

For the second task, the child is then shown a more detailed description of a cat’s antics, in three paragraphs. The child reads the example and then writes about his or her chosen pet in more detail. Each paragraph will be about a different activity, their pet enjoys.

The third task builds vocabulary. The child is given lists of helpful adjectives and verbs to read and then add to.

The fourth task asks the child to complete a fact file, compiling information on their chosen pet.

In the fifth task, the child reads an example of a leaflet which uses persuasive words and phrases to describe a rescue pet. The child then completes the skeleton sentences to write their own persuasive article.

In the final task, the child is asked to read an example, which shows how words and phrases can be used to play on people’s emotions. They are then asked to write their own persuasive article, using persuasive words and phrases, to persuade people to help an animal charity.

This theme could be developed over several lessons. It would be excellent for homework handouts.

This resource is featured in the book ‘We Love Animals: Get Going With Creative Writing’ series.

This series provides prompts to encourage children to write. It provides starting points, to encourage even the most reluctant writers.

Written in a lively magazine style format, each pack provides a step by step guide to teach children how to plan and write an animal themed story.

The packs also provide starting points to write e-mails, letters, play scripts, diaries, reports and other non fiction texts.

The child will learn writing techniques; simple, compound and complex sentences, connectives and spelling, punctuation and grammar tips. There is an emphasis on improving vocabulary - looking at lots of better word choices: harder adjectives, more powerful verbs and adverbs.

This series is recommended for use with children between the ages of 7-11 and provides writing practice for those children preparing to take 11+ examinations or S.A.T.s. The packs will also benefit children with special needs, or where English is a second language,
