Step 2 Persuade your readers with your body paragraphs.

  • Try to relate the subject of the essay (say, Plato’s Symposium ) to a tangentially related issue you happen to know something about (say, the growing trend of free-wheeling hookups in frat parties). Slowly bring the paragraph around to your actual subject and make a few generalizations about why this aspect of the book/subject is so fascinating and worthy of study (such as how different the expectations for physical intimacy were then compared to now).

What Is a Term Paper… And What Is The First Step?

A term paper is a critical and analytical report on the topic or subject that you covered within the course of studies. It usually consists of two separate but equally important aspects: your own thoughts about the topic and a demonstration of your understanding of the existing literature. The main goal of this assignment is to summarize the material you learned and showcase your understanding of the topic. This aspect makes the term paper a universal instrument for assessing a student’s proficiency. It also explains why term papers cost so many points of your course grade.

We usually associate a term paper with a research paper , but although the concepts are quite similar, a research paper requires a more academic approach and a deeper investigation into the literature of your field of study.

You will almost certainly find a few faults, whether they are contextual, factual, syntactical, grammatical, or even simple spelling mistakes. Achievement in the Sixth Term Examination Papers (STEP) normally forms part of a conditional offer to read mathematics at Cambridge. The examinations are set and administered by the OCR examination board and are usually taken in mid to late June. There is extensive free online support offered by the Faculty and NRICH to help you prepare for STEP, and many other free online resources are also available.

OCR has a dedicated STEP website , which has all the details of the examination (method of entry, dates, specifications, etc) as well as downloadable past papers. (There is also a Customer Support Service which can be contacted by email or by phone: 01223 553998.)

If your school or college is not already registered as a centre, they can apply to become a test centre (UK or abroad). If you have difficulty finding a test centre where you can take STEP, you can use their online search to find a test centre, in the UK or abroad, otherwise the Customer Support Service may be able to advise you,.

STEP format

  • There are two STEP mathematics papers: STEP 2, and STEP 3 (STEP 1 was discontinued in 2020).  Your offer will usually include grades in papers 2 and 3.
  • The papers for STEP 2 and STEP 3 each consist of 12 questions: 8 pure, 2 mechanics, and 2 statistics/probability. 
  • All answers that you submit in the examination are carefully assessed, but your final score is based on the six highest scoring questions only. Each question is marked out of  20, so the maximum mark you can achieve on either STEP paper is 120. There are five grades, which are (from highest to lowest) S, 1, 2, 3, and U. 

The specifications

  • STEP 2 is based on A level Mathematics and AS level Further Mathematics (or the equivalent).
  • STEP 3 is based on a typical Further Mathematics A-level syllabus and the questions are intended to be about the same level of difficulty as those of STEP 2.

The full STEP specification is available on the OCR webpages about 'Preparing for STEP' . Note: even though the specification for STEP in 2019 onwards has changed from that in previous years, the style of the questions is unaltered, so most questions from previous papers can be used for preparation. Candidates should be aware that a small number of past paper questions are no longer on the specification and require mathematics that is no longer examined. STEP 1 papers are available and, although STEP 1 is no longer set, the papers provide useful preparation material. The STEP 1 specification was roughly equivalent to that of A level mathematics.

Cambridge Colleges like to make offers involving STEP for the following main reasons:

  • STEP is a far better predictor of success in the Mathematical Tripos than A-levels. One reason for this is that the questions are less standard and less structured, which helps to distinguish between ability (or potential) and good teaching.
  • Preparation for STEP serves as useful preparation for our course.
  • The STEP marks and the scripts themselves are available for inspection by college staff. This means that it is possible to make allowances for a near miss and to make judgements on the actual work rather than on just the marks or grades.
  • Candidates apply to Cambridge with a wide range of different UK based and international qualifications. STEP provides a fairer 'across the board' comparison.
  • Using STEP allows us to make offers to many more candidates who show mathematical potential at interview, but do not have quite enough mathematical knowledge and skills because of educational disadvantage, then provide sustained support to motivate them and help them prepare for the exam and for mathematics at University level. So STEP is also a powerful tool for widening participation.

Many other universities recommend that their mathematics applicants practise on past STEP papers as preparation for university-style mathematics, and some encourage applicants to take STEP papers and may take STEP results into account.

Important Advice

Do not worry if your school is not able to provide much help with STEP.

There is plenty of material with which you can help yourself. The best preparation for STEP is to work through past papers. Full solutions are available to guide you if you get stuck. NB: the Faculty of Mathematics provides a free online STEP Support programme to help you develop your advanced problem-solving skills, from the summer of Y12 onwards, and prepare for STEP - see below for more details.

Do not worry if the STEP questions seem very difficult.

STEP is supposed to be difficult: it is aimed at the top 5% or so of all A-level mathematics candidates. It is therefore important to adjust your sights when tackling a STEP paper. The questions are much longer and more demanding than A-level questions (in A levels you are expected to answer 11-14 questions in two hours whereas in STEP papers you are expected to answer no more than 6 questions in three hours). They therefore look daunting; but you should not be daunted. With enough practice you will get better at tackling STEP questions and you will be well prepared to achieve the grades you need.

STEP Support Programme

The Faculty of Mathematics, in collaboration with NRICH, has developed a free online STEP Support programme to help potential university applicants develop their advanced problem-solving skills and prepare for sitting STEP Mathematics examinations. This includes:

  • online modules for individual study: there are 25 Foundation modules, and several modules for each of STEP 2 and STEP 3
  • tips on how to get started
  • videos showing worked solutions to past STEP questions.

These resources are free and open to everyone. Find all the resources at maths.org/STEP .

The STEP Support programme consists of three introductory modules for students to try in the summer holidays between Year 12 and 13, followed by 30 more modules released weekly from September. Each module assignment starts with some warm-up exercises, followed by preparatory work leading to a STEP question. Supportive self-evaluation and development material will be published after each assignment, to help you assess your progress and identify areas that need more work.

The programme also includes an online discussion forum to support students preparing for STEP. You can ask for help and hints if you’re stuck, share what you have tried so far, offer advice to others and get guidance from Cambridge University students who’ve taken STEP themselves.

Other Free Online Resources 

There are a number of other free resources. There are also a number of commercial resources that the Faculty neither endorses nor recommends, since there are more than enough free resources.

  • Advanced Problems in Mathematics by Dr Stephen Siklos. We emphasise that Dr Siklos' book is free to download in PDF format (as well as being available as a paperback to purchase), and we recommend using this link (rather than links on some third-party sites). The book, which is a revised and extended version of two earlier books, analyses recent STEP questions selected to address the syllabus for Papers I and II. Each question is followed by a comment and a full solution. The solutions point students to the methodology required to address advanced mathematical problems critically and independently.
  • The STEP database is a searchable database of all STEP questions from the 1986 specimen papers until 2018 papers.

  • The MEI website has full solutions to the papers for 1996 to 2019, to guide you if you get stuck.
  • Advanced Problem-Solving resources from NRICH. This is an accessible and structured introduction to advanced problem solving, which will help build confidence, fluency and speed. This is a useful resource if you feel uncertain about your mathematical preparation, and you'd like a gentler introduction or just something to 'dip into' at the start to explore some particular topics.
  • STEP questions with solutions at Underground Mathematics. Disciplinary next steps regarding some students

Dear colleagues,

Monday afternoon, President Kornbluth outlined for the community a set of disciplinary consequences related to students who remained in the unauthorized encampment on Kresge lawn after a 2:30 p.m. deadline. Students received two follow-up messages making our expectations clear. Student Life staff have now initiated these disciplinary actions, which will apply in the interim until cases are reviewed by the faculty-led Committee on Discipline (COD).

In case this process involves students of yours, we wanted to be sure you had some basic facts, shown below. S3 or GradSupport will help the affected students with communicating to their instructors and advisors. Please note that you do not need to take any action based on the contents of this letter.

  • Some of the students who face disciplinary consequences received an interim academic suspension . Under an interim academic suspension, a student is not allowed to participate in any co-curricular, extracurricular, or academic activities – no classes, no labs, no exams, including virtually – until the COD can review the case. Students are not eligible to be employed by or volunteer for the Institute, and if they have a student appointment, it has also been suspended. Students may only make use of their Institute housing, dining halls, and MIT Health. All other privileges connected to their student status are suspended.
  • Students who were already subject to pending or prior COD cases or who participated in escalating behavior in a heated situation have now received interim full suspensions , pending further consideration by the COD. Students on full interim suspension are not permitted on campus, except to access MIT Health. All other privileges connected to their student status are suspended. They are not allowed to remain in Institute housing or to use their meal plans, and they may not participate in any co-curricular, extracurricular, or academic activities – no classes, no labs, no exams, including virtually. These students are not eligible to be employed by or volunteer for the Institute, and if they have a student appointment, it has also been suspended.
  • S3 and GradSupport deans will reach out directly to affected students to offer support.
  • If one of your students has received an interim suspension of any kind, when you go to enter their grade in the system, you will see an “O.” (In subjects with J/U grading, you will see “**”.) The Note field will show “Academic Suspension.” In cases where COD review results in the suspension being lifted, an “X” will be appended to the “O,” at which time you will be able to resolve the grade with the student. For thesis/research subjects, you will be notified if a suspension is lifted.
  • Monday night, a number of students chose to move back into the camp. Everyone should be clear that, consistent with President Kornbluth’s letter on Monday , students remaining in the encampment now should also expect to be subject to disciplinary consequences.

Seattle to open short-term recovery center for people after a fentanyl overdose

Seattle will open a new space for people to recover and receive treatment for nearly 24 hours after they have overdosed on fentanyl or other drugs, Mayor Bruce Harrell announced Thursday.

The center is slated to open near the Pioneer Square neighborhood in mid-2025 and will be run by a homelessness and substance abuse nonprofit organization called the Downtown Emergency Services Center.

In the first four months of this year, emergency services treated nearly 2,500 opioid overdoses across King County, which includes Seattle, KUOW reported . Over 200 deaths caused by opioid-related overdoses were recorded in that same period.

Opioid overdose deaths, which are caused by heroin, fentanyl and oxycodone, have increased dramatically in the city, state and across the U.S. In Portland, Oregon, elected leaders declared a state of emergency earlier this year over the public health and public safety crisis fueled by fentanyl.

Emergency responders in Seattle, once the center is open, will offer to take people there following an overdose and treatment with Narcan, a nasal spray that can reverse the effects of opioids.

A dose of Narcan can trigger intense withdrawal symptoms and can lead people to seek more fentanyl. City officials and service providers said the new space, called the Overdose Recovery and Care Access center, will offer a safe place to recuperate as well as services.

“The conditions we see on our streets because of fentanyl require every level of governance to step up in advancing urgent compassionate, loving and innovative solutions,” Harrell said.

People who go to the center can stay for up to 23 hours and will have access to medical care and treatment options from buprenorphine, which can ease withdrawal symptoms, to an initial round of methadone, the most commonly used treatment for opioid substance use. Officials estimate the site will serve 20 to 25 clients per day.

The Downtown Emergency Services Center will receive $5.65 million to open the center. Additionally, Evergreen Treatment Services will get $1.35 million to operate a mobile clinic, bringing medications to people where they are.

The money comes from a federal grant and is part of a $27 million investment pledged by Harrell’s administration to address the fentanyl crisis. Health workers and emergency responders said Thursday they expected interest in the center would be high, The Seattle Times reported .

Dr. Caleb Banta-Green, director of the University of Washington Center for Community-Engaged Drug Education, Epidemiology and Research, said he doesn’t anticipate anyone needing much convincing to go to the center. The feeling of withdrawal after receiving a Narcan dose is powerful enough that most people will seek help, he said.

“What we think is that if we offer a great place and word starts to spread, people will want to come here,” he said.

Hierarchical SAPO-34 zeolite catalysts were successfully synthesized via one-step hydrothermal synthesis approach with the assistance of excess triethylamine (TEA). Compared with conventional SAPO-34 (SP-T3), SAPO-34 synthesized with TEA/Al2O3 molar ratio of 9 (SP-T9) presents high catalytic performance in ethanol dehydration reaction due to its pseudocubic morphology with abundant butterfly-like secondary large pores and slightly decreased surface acidity. Afterwards, a cost-effective and green route is developed for synthesizing hierarchical SAPO-34 catalysts by recycling waste mother liquids. In the recycling processes, the residual organic templates in the mother liquids reuse in the next synthesis of SAPO-34 without adding fresh templates. After three recycles of mother liquids, the synthesized SP-R3 catalyst still retains high crystallinity, hierarchical structure, moderate acidity, as well as excellent catalytic performance in ethanol dehydration as compared to the initial SP-T9 catalyst.

You could also open a no-penalty CD if you're worried about early withdrawals. No-penalty CDs permit a free withdrawal, so you won't have to pay these fees.

Analyzing historical CD rates can help you understand when bank CD rates are competitive. Bear in mind that the Federal Reserve's actions can largely affect CD rate trends, but you also have some control over how much interest you can earn on a CD.

Economic Conditions and Fed Actions

The Fed will adjust the federal funds rate to slow down or stir economic growth. For example, the Fed may raise the federal funds rate to combat rising inflation or lower the rate to encourage borrowing.

Changes in the federal funds rate impact bank CD rates. The account's rates usually rise when the federal funds rate goes up and drops when the federal funds rate goes down.

Something to note about the current economic environment is that short-term CD rates are higher than long-term CD rates . This is because banks expect the Fed to cut rates in the future but still want to have competitive rates available.

CD Term Length and Opening Deposit

One way to see if a CD is right for you is by using a CD calculator to figure out your potential interest earnings. That may help you visualize whether a CD fits with your financial goals.

Keep in mind that your opening deposit and term length can make a difference in your earnings. You also want to avoid making an early withdrawal, because the penalty is usually some of the interest you've earned on the account.

TD Bank CDs vs. Chase Bank CDs

As with TD Bank, Chase CD rates can vary by location. And like TD Bank, its only competitive rates are relationship rates, and only on certain terms. Your choice between the two could come down to which term you want to open — for example, you'd earn a higher relationship rate on a 9-month CD with Chase, but the 6-month relationship rate is better with TD Bank.

Chase is a good option if you want to open a longer-term CD because it has terms of up to 10 years. But it doesn't have any no-penalty CDs or step-up CDs , like TD Bank does.

Bank of America CD rates depend on where you live, and it only pays high rates on certain terms. Like TD Bank, it has three types of CDs. The best fit could come down to which type of CD or term length you want.

What Does ‘Post-Emerging’ Look Like in Today’s Dance Landscape?

Fresh Tracks, at New York Live Arts, showcases early-career dance makers. This year’s talented crop wonders about next steps.

Bill T. Jones still remembers warming up backstage for one of his first New York City performances, in 1977: a solo at Dance Theater Workshop in Chelsea, as part of a series for up-and-coming experimentalists.

Jones was 25 and visiting from upstate New York, where he belonged to a small countercultural dance collective. He would be sharing that evening’s program with five other choreographers, including the Baroque dancer Catherine Turocy, the Merce Cunningham acolyte Kenneth King and the postmodern-ballet iconoclast Donald Byrd. To be suddenly surrounded by so many different aesthetics, he said in an interview, “was exhilarating and terrifying.”

“Quaintly, that was the big time,” he said. “A very important rite of passage. We felt that we had arrived.”

In the nearly 50 years since, a lot has changed at the institution formerly known as Dance Theater Workshop, where Jones is now the artistic director. In 2012, the theater merged with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company to become New York Live Arts. But that right-of-passage series has endured. It has gone by a few names since it began, the year Dance Theater Workshop was founded, in 1965 — Studio Series, Choreographers Showcase and, since 1984, Fresh Tracks. But it remains a place, as Jones said, “to see where new ideas are just breaking the soil.”

On May 17 and 18, Live Arts presents the latest edition of Fresh Tracks , featuring works by Julia Antinozzi, Vinson Fraley, Liony Garcia and Symara Sarai. Selected through an open application and interview process, these choreographers join a long, star-studded roster of past participants that includes contemporary dance trailblazers like Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Molissa Fenley, Reggie Wilson and Tere O’Connor. In the tradition of eclectic shared evenings, theirs is diverse in its themes: the allure of ballet (Antinozzi), the possibility of rest (Fraley), the unpredictability of social media (Garcia) and the power of Black women’s autonomy (Sarai).

While continuing a distinguished lineage, today’s Fresh Tracks artists, who must be in the early stages of their choreographic careers, face a rockier financial landscape than generations past. They are billed as “emerging,” which has always been a nebulous label. But the linear path it implies — a step on the way to midcareer, then established — has perhaps never been so illusory.

In New York, dance artists are finding their way in a harsh post-pandemic economy, with a soaring cost of living and dwindling funding. A 2023 dance industry census , conducted by the service organization Dance/NYC, found that “the dance industry continues to navigate the effects of the pandemic with fragility” — exacerbated by a drop-off in pandemic relief funds — and that “dance is not financially sustainable for most of its workers.”

“We haven’t figured out what is a sustainable career for a dance maker or a dancer,” said Janet Wong, the associate artistic director of Live Arts. What she hopes Fresh Tracks can do is give artists “some tools that they may not have had beforehand.”

Originally a stand-alone performance showcase, the series has evolved over the decades into a more robust residency and professional development program. Over the past eight months, this year’s artists came together for workshops on topics like grant writing and communications, as well as dialogues about the creative process with the program’s artistic adviser, Nia Love. Each received 50 hours of studio space and a $5,000 stipend to make a 15-minute work.

Fresh Tracks is just one of many opportunities for early-career choreographers around the city; others include residencies at Triskelion Arts, Movement Research and Abrons Arts Center, as well as shows at the resourceful new space Pageant. But its strong emphasis on pragmatic skills sets Fresh Tracks apart. Antinozzi, 27, who recently also had a residency at Triskelion, described the workshops as “kind of like school, but in a nice way — like extremely practical.”

O’Connor, a professor of dance at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, who showed his first-ever work at Fresh Tracks in 1984, sees the program as “a guiding hand” in a “financially dire” moment. “It’s really easy to make a big impact with your first work,” he said. “But then to keep it going — second, third, fourth — it’s a rough terrain. It’s good to have help with it.”

The prospect of “arriving” through Fresh Tracks might be more elusive than it once was, but this year’s artists still see the performance as a special opportunity. They talked about how they got here, what they’re working on, and where they hope to go next.

Julia Antinozzi

Antinozzi grew up studying ballet in New Haven and began choreographing as a student at Smith College, where she drifted away from her classical training. But lately she has been rekindling a love affair with her roots after becoming “obsessed” with going to see New York City Ballet. (She learned she could buy $30 tickets, a discount for patrons under 30.)

Her Fresh Tracks piece, “Third Variation,” is the finale of an evening-length work for four dancers; she showed the first two sections at Triskelion.

Though not obvious on the surface, the dance is an attempt “to figure out what it is I’m so attracted to about going to the ballet,” she said. She has been inspired by George Balanchine’s “La Sonnambula,” “Tarantella” and “Swan Lake,” as well as dancers’ autobiographies, subtly folding these references into her lush, ornate compositions.

As she wraps up a busy spring of dance-making — balanced with the arts administration jobs that support her financially — Antinozzi finds herself “in a strange middle ground,” unsure of what comes next.

“I’ve had these great opportunities,” she said. “The next jump would be, what, like Chelsea Factory? The Joyce? Things that feel too far away.”

At Live Arts, she hopes to get some new eyes on her work. “It’s exciting that a lot of new people might see it,” she said. “It’s validating. Like, ‘Look, someone has let me do this, you should let me do more.’”

Symara Sarai

Sarai , 29, dreams of showing her work internationally, and her training has already taken her around the world. She studied at Oregon Ballet Theater in Portland, where she grew up, then in Trinidad and Tobago, where her mother is from, and for a year at the Beijing Dance Academy.

In 2019 she graduated from Purchase College, almost straight into the pandemic. She used the time of isolation (and collecting unemployment) to develop her solo practice . For the past two years, she has danced with Urban Bush Women, a job she finds both financially and artistically sustaining. Eventually, though, she wants to strike out on her own.

“The desire is to be fully employed by myself in my choreographic work,” she said.

For Fresh Tracks, Sarai is making “Batty Juice,” a trio for herself and two other dancers “that tries to bring us in proximity to our authentic autonomy,” she said. “In other words, how do I create a work in which three Black girls can do whatever they want?”

Sarai is a daring solo improviser, and her uninhibited spirit infuses this project, too. “I’m trying to offer this space of, like, the furthest you think you can go, you can go further,” she said.

Sarai sees “Batty Juice” as the start of a longer work, and she hopes Fresh Tracks will open doors to expanding it.

“The thing that scares me the most is, like, what is post-emerging?” she said, noting the relative abundance of opportunities for early-career artists. “It feels like you have to start making it up a little bit, after the emerging pot closes.”

Liony Garcia

Garcia , 38 and originally from Cuba, moved to New York last year from Miami, where he had lived for most of his life. Still getting his bearings in a new city, he was surprised to be accepted to Fresh Tracks — an unexpected opportunity, he said, “to introduce myself and my work to the community here.”

In Miami, Garcia danced with the contemporary choreographers Rosie Herrera, Brigid Baker and others. His first evening-length work, developed over three years, was an ambitious project responding to the city’s Art Deco architecture through movement.

For his Fresh Tracks piece, “Fantasy Punctured,” he tried to keep things simpler. Interested in the implications of scrolling on social media, he used the video editing app CapCut to string together short, idiosyncratic clips of his dancers improvising, the basis for a series of solos.

“I wanted a process more in line with the kind of life I’m living, which isn’t a very settled life — it’s all over the place,” said Garcia, who also teaches dance to teenagers and works at a hotel’s front desk. With CapCut on his phone, he could choreograph “on the fly,” he said.

More than any specific opportunity, Garcia is working toward cultivating a slower, more focused practice. “I have conversations with my cast about it,” he said. “We all want to feel really settled in the work we’re making, and not have to jump around so much.”

Vinson Fraley

A model and singer as well as a dancer, Fraley , who grew up in North Carolina and Atlanta, describes himself as “fashion adjacent.” You might have seen him in a recent Pandora Mother’s Day ad (with his mom) or campaigns for Apple and Calvin Klein.

While pursuing commercial work, he has also danced for choreographers like Kyle Abraham and Bobbi Jene Smith and, for four years, Bill T. Jones. At 29, he characterizes his dance-making journey so far as “little dabbles here and there.” One of those, not so little, was a duet with the New York City Ballet principal Sara Mearns at the Joyce Theater in 2022.

His Fresh Tracks work, “Alluvium,” digs deeper into a solo he performed last year outdoors at Lincoln Center, what he calls a “ritual that is basically a procession toward rest.”

“I’ve been trying to do less and really pare down the gestural language into something more minimal, that can really be taken in,” he said.

For future projects, he envisions interventions of dance in public space: “That’s a dream for me, to expand the idea of what dance is on a mass level,” he said. “It isn’t just, like, a cool Gap commercial.”

The Fresh Tracks workshops have helped him appreciate what such a project might entail, logistically. “What has become really apparent from all of the sessions,” he said, “is how much work you are doing as the choreographer or director of something. It really is no joke.”

Stepping Into the World of Dance

As Black roller skaters from around the country bring their styles to Atlanta, some locals look for space to preserve the moves the city  is known for.

A gala-style piece can be done in a rote or fresh manner, and at New York City Ballet’s spring gala, the two premieres — one by Justin Peck, one by Amy Hall Garner  — were fresh enough.

Eduardo Vilaro celebrates his 15th year as artistic director  of Ballet Hispánico with a premiere exploring the life of the painter Juan de Pareja.

The spring season at New York City Ballet  opened with an all-Balanchine program and a vintage miniature from 1975: “Errante,” staged for a new generation.

Under the banner “American Legacies,” the Martha Graham Dance Company dusted off a classic, “Rodeo,” premiered a companion piece  and welcomed FKA twigs for a guest solo  at City Center.

As Harlem Stage’s E-Moves dance series turns 25, Bill T. Jones and other major choreographers discuss its impact on Black dance  in New York.
