  • Sometimes your research leads you to a different conclusion than your thesis originally set out to prove. Adjust your thesis statement accordingly.
  • Keep your sentences short and coherent. As much as possible, use active verbs throughout.
  • Use transitional expressions between sentences and paragraphs; words such as “moreover,” “consequently” and “finally,” help your readers follow your train of thought and move smoothly from one thought to the next.
  • Review your essay for spelling and grammar errors and any weaknesses in its flow. If possible, recruit a friend to help you proofread your essay before you submit it.

Earthquakes are a natural disaster that come with a lot of dangers. The shaking and movement of the earth can cause buildings to fall down, trapping people inside. The shaking caused by such a sudden change is usually very minor, but large earthquakes sometimes cause very large shaking of the land. The shaking waves spread from the spot at which rock begins breaking for the first time; this spot is called the center, or hypocenter, of an earthquake.

If you're inside when an earthquake starts, drop to the ground and cover your head. The earthquake's magnitude is related to the amount of earthquake energy released in a seismic event.

Different Types of Earthquakes

There are three types of earthquakes:

Shallow | A shallow earthquake is when the earthquake's focus is close to the surface of the Earth. These earthquakes are usually less powerful than the other two types, but can still cause a lot of damage.

Intermediate | Intermediate earthquakes have a focus that's located between the surface and the Earth's mantle, and are usually more powerful than shallow earthquakes.

Deep | Deep earthquakes have a focus that's located in the mantle, which is the layer of the Earth below the crust. They're the most powerful type of earthquake, and can even cause damage on the surface.

An earthquake can cause damage to buildings and bridges; interrupt gas, electrical, and telephone services; and occasionally trigger landslides, avalanches, flash flooding, wildfires, and massive, destructive waves of water over oceans (tsunamis).

The Dangers Associated With Earthquakes

The shaking of the ground can cause objects to fall off shelves and injure people. If you're outside when an earthquake starts, move away from tall buildings, streetlights and power lines.

An earthquake can also cause a tsunami, or a large wave, to form and crash onto the shore. Tsunamis can be very dangerous and can reach heights of over 100 feet.

How to Prepare for an Earthquake

When an earthquake is imminent, your first step should be to find a safe spot. The most ideal spots are under sturdy furniture or inside door frames. It is best to stay away from windows and anything that can fall over.

Once you've found the safest place, it's time to prepare for the shaking. Grab some blankets, pillows and helmets if possible – all of which can provide extra cushioning against falling objects.

Additionally, you should always keep an eye out for debris that could cause injuries, such as broken glass and sharp objects.

Finally, stay calm until the shaking stops, and monitor local news reports for additional information on how best to handle the situation.

What to do During an Earthquake

The moment an earthquake hits, it is important to stay as calm and collected as possible. Safety is the first priority so you must stay away from windows and furniture that can fall on you, and protect your head with your arms if needed.

If an earthquake occurs while you are indoors, stay away from anything that could fall or break such as windows, mirrors, or furniture. Do not run outdoors as shaking can cause glass and other materials to fall from the building structure. Instead, seek shelter under sturdy tables or desks. If there is no furniture available, move to a corner of the room and crouch down protectively with your arms over your head and neck.

It's also important to take note of any gas lines that could be affected during an earthquake and shut them off if necessary in order to prevent fires from breaking out due to exposed pipes.

After the Earthquake: Recovery and Assistance

When the shaking stops, there will be a period of recovery.

Don't enter any building if it has visible damage due to the earthquake - it's better to be safe than sorry.

You should contact local aid organisations like the Red Cross for additional help with sheltering, water, food and other essentials.

One of these natural disasters that can do a lot of damage to the ecosystem is an earthquake.

What is an Earthquake?

The shaking of the surface of the Earth is known as an earthquake. It occurs as a sudden trembling of the surface and is a natural event. It is basically caused due to the release of energy from the interior portion of the Earth . 

Undoubtedly, earthquakes do not occur frequently, but they are terrible natural disasters and can cause huge damage to life and property. One can come across many kinds of earthquakes; some of them are weak and go unnoticed, while others are strong and severe. 

The most dangerous thing about an earthquake is that it is usually unpredictable and comes without any indication. Earthquakes usually occur due to the movement of the tectonic plates, and their intensity is measured on the Richter scale.

There are mainly four different types of earthquakes, namely, tectonic, volcanic, collapse, and explosive.

Tectonic Earthquake

The crust of the Earth is made up of slabs of rocks of uneven shapes and sizes; these are known as tectonic plates. Energy is stored in these tectonic plates, making them push or pull towards each other. 

This pressure builds up between the adjacent plates, thereby producing a fault line. This acts as an epicentre or focus, from which energy is sent in the form of waves towards the surface. This causes an earthquake on the surface.

Collapse Earthquake

This is a type of earthquake that has a weak natural magnitude. These types of earthquakes usually occur in the caverns and the mines. Any underground blast in the mines causes seismic waves that can cause a small earthquake.

Volcanic Earthquake

As per the name, the volcanic earthquake is caused by volcanic activity. Just like the collapse earthquake, these are also of weaker magnitude. A light magnitude earthquake due to the explosion of magma from the volcanoes.

Causes of Earthquake

Earthquakes are usually caused by the movement of the tectonic plates under the surface of the Earth. The breaking of a tectonic plate or sliding of the adjacent tectonic plates releases energy that produces seismic waves. The tectonic plates are never static, and they always keep on moving. 

Whenever two tectonic plates touch each other, it becomes a hotspot for earthquakes. These tectonic plates start sliding against each other, and they never slide smoothly. Friction occurs between the plates, and a tremendous amount of energy is released.

This energy gets converted into seismic waves. The seismic waves then travel to the surface, causing earthquakes.

Depending on the depth of the epicenter, location, and magnitude, the seismic waves have the potential to tear the surface of the Earth, thus damaging buildings and other natural ecosystems. The areas where this activity occurs are usually known as geological faults. 

The portion of the intersection of two tectonic plates is known as a fault line, which may vary from a few metres to hundreds of kilometers. These are the most common points in an earthquake.

Effects of Earthquake

Earthquakes do not cause any direct harm to human civilizations most of the time. But they can do a lot of damage to different parts of the ecosystem and can also hurt property.

The displacement of the Earth’s surface or the ground is one of the most dangerous impacts of an earthquake. It can even collapse buildings, damage all forms of property, and can also lead to the loss of lives. 

The damage can block roads and bridges and can cause catastrophic problems for a few months. Earthquakes can also affect electric power and gas lines and also have a chance to cause fire breakouts.

An earthquake is also responsible for an event known as liquefaction. It is a process when the sand and soil beneath any infrastructure become very soft and mix with the groundwater.

  • People just stay indoors until the shaking stops. Moreover, if you have an open space, one should be there as such places have a reduced risk.
  • For a light magnitude earthquake, one must stay away from furniture, shelves, heavy appliances, objects, and other items as well.
  • Take shelter under a firm object like a table or bed, and hold on to something strong and fixed.
  • Check for proper electricity and gas connections. You must ensure that there are no leaks in the system. The main power switch and the main gas valves should be checked properly.
  • To be well prepared for the issues, the residents of the regularly affected areas should have first aid kits on hand to treat minor injuries. Medical staff should always be prepared for such events.

Introduction:

The Earthquake results from a sudden release of energy through the earth’s crust that creates seismic waves. In its most generic sense, the word ‘earthquake’ is used to describe any seismic event, whether a natural phenomenon or an event is caused by humans that generate seismic waves. Causes of earthquakes are mostly ruptured geological faults, volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear experiments. An earthquake’s point of initial rupture is called its focus or hypocenter. Earthquakes originate due to various reasons, which fall into two major categories, nontectonic and tectonic. The origin of tectonic earthquakes is explained with the help of the “elastic rebound theory.” However, it has been observed that most destructive earthquakes originate within two well-defined zones or belts, namely “The Circum Pacific Belt” and “the Mediterranean Himalayan Seismic Belt”. Unlike most natural disasters, Earthquakes can affect millions of square kilometers within a short time, which is less than a minute in most cases. And there is no accurate early warning system of it invented so far.

Bangladesh perspective

Historical earthquake records suggest that Bangladesh has experienced at least four major earthquakes between 7 and 8. These earthquakes are namely great Assam earthquake of 1897, the Sri Mongol earthquake of 1918, and the Dhubri earthquake of 1930. These earthquakes caused extensive damage to property and life and changed geographic expressions such as ground tilt, ground subsidence, river course change, etc. In most parts of the Bengal delta, there are many indications of earthquakes. But despite all the signs of a possible large earthquake, Bangladesh’s preparation to face an Earthquake event is poor. Most infrastructures and communication of Bangladesh are likely to collapse in the event of a significant Earthquake. That Bangladesh lies in the active earthquake zone is not unknown to Bangladesh. Alarmed by the recurrence of quakes during recent years, experts have called for developing an earthquake-resistant building code that all buildings should follow as mandatory.

As many buildings are likely to collapse, the death toll is expected to be numerous. Besides, many will be injured due to building collapse. The casualty toll of Bangladesh will be much higher as it is too densely populated country. The mega-cities like Dhaka, Chittagong seem to appear as the city of death in case of Large Earthquakes. In Bangladesh, the major cities are expanding vertically because of the lack of land to accommodate their people. In the present day, most of the buildings are being constructed without following the building code. In case of an event of an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 and above in the Richter scale, the effect can be branded as “Beyond imagination.” Bridges are likely to fall down; the railway line is expected to bend in case of an earthquake having a magnitude of 8.0 and over. There might be cracks in the road. Moreover, debris of the destroyed buildings and establishments may block the roads, railway lines, and other communication tracks; electric power may be hindered. Moreover, debris from destroyed buildings and establishments may also tear off the electric wires which are still connected above the ground. This will disrupt the power sector, which will ultimately result in enormous suffering, especially for the medical industry. Again, water pipelines beneath the ground are likely to burst in the case of an earthquake with 8.0 magnitude and above.

Like many other developing countries, in Bangladesh, where the doctors’ ratio is insufficient considering the population, Earthquake will cause more hazards in the medical sector. Especially in the major cities, the number of injured people is likely to be too high because of the destruction of many buildings that were constructed, violating the building code. Our insufficient medical facilities will not be able to manage all the patients.

Bangladesh, one of the overpopulated countries in the world, often experiences food crises. This mainly happens because of any disastrous situation; few businessmen raise the price of food to make more profit so that the poor population sometimes can not afford it. This situation, in turn, may result in worsening the law and order situation. In our country, maximum people are dependent on gas for cooking. Moreover, many industries are run with the help of gas as the source of power generation. In major cities, gas is supplied through the pipeline, and people use gas in cylinders in other cities. In case of a significant earthquake, the gas pipelines may burst and result in breaking out of fire. Earthquake is always followed by a risk of tsunami which in Indonesia, the Maldives and Sri Lanka in the year 2004 was the result of an under-sea earthquake where thousands of people died. Bangladesh is likely to face a tremendous crisis in the economic sector because of total infrastructural damage, increase in unemployment after being shaken by a large earthquake.

The present state of preparedness of Bangladesh to face Earthquake:

We must have to admit that our preparation for managing the disaster is not at all satisfactory. The practice of various organizations in Bangladesh is discussed below.

  • Preparation of Ministry of Food and Disaster Management is still in the bottom line. Still, it has not chalked out a detailed plan. However, recently this department has geared up its actions in this regard.
  • Preparation of Housing and Public Works is not satisfactory too. It is expected to ensure that the buildings are being constructed with the line of building code. But unfortunately, they are working very slowly.
  • Ministry of Health should remain prepared with enhanced medical facilities. But we still observe deficiency in this sector.
  • Fire service and Civil Defense can be somehow prepared through job training on the rescue operation. But they lack specialized and sophisticated instruments.
  • So far, the Ministry of Information has rarely been found to formulate an effective policy for media to grow awareness amongst people. This department can be said to be least prepared despite its capabilities.

Presently for an incident of Earthquake, govt. We will have to rely on the equipment of Roads and Highways, Fire service and Civil Defense, and the Bangladesh Army. But these equipment are not designed primarily for carrying out rescue operations in an Earthquake; neither are these adequate in number. Govt. should think in detail and new equipment should be purchased without much delay.

Measures to be taken to face the havoc

  • The buildings which were constructed violating the building code should be demolished wholly but slowly. This will increase the accommodation crisis definitely, but this will save lives in time.
  • For an event of Earthquake, a massive number of volunteers will be required for rescue operations and medical treatment; They should be organized at the Upazilla level and trained so that they can come in use when necessary.
  •  The medical facilities of Bangladesh should be enriched immediately to face the disaster of the Earthquake and render the required service in the standard period.
  • Earthquakes can not be suppressed, but their effect can be reduced by developing awareness amongst the people.
  • Bangladesh should establish an earthquake monitoring and early warning center.
  • We do not have adequate and modern equipment to rescue the injured personnel from the debris. Endeavors should be taken to purchase unique and sophisticated equipment for rescue operations.
  •  Ministry of Food and Disaster Management should enrich the Food Bank to sustain up to the period until international relief arrives.
  • A tsunami shelter should be constructed regularly so that the people living in the coastal areas can take refuge there just after an earthquake.

Conclusion:

Two schools of experts regarding Earthquake opine that there is almost cent percent possibility of occurring Earthquake in Bangladesh and some surrounding countries. One school of experts opine that the recent recurrent tremors in the country are a significant Earthquake threat. But the other one opines that through the small tremors, the possibility of the major quake is gradually dwindling because the Tectonic plates, due to such occurrence, are getting their balance back. However, whatever be the magnitude of the probable earthquakes, some vulnerable zones of Bangladesh, such as some areas of Dhaka city like Magda, Basabo, Jatrabari, Moghbazar, Goran, and the like, may be gruesomely endangered, and that is why about aftermaths of the quakes, govt. Related authorities alongside non-govt. Leaders must be alert to avoid loss as much as possible.

Title: around-the-world seismic echo as a trigger for aftershocks and the main shock of an earthquake.

Abstract: The essence of the cumulative effect of a round-the-world seismic echo is that the echo can serve as a trigger for a second tremors in the epicentral zone of the earthquake that gave rise to the echo. According to the classification of triggers, the round-the-world echo is an endogenous force mechanical additive trigger. The round-the-world echo excited by the main shock as a trigger for aftershocks has been studied in detail previously. In this work, the question of whether a foreshock can excite a round-the-world echo, which will turn out to be a trigger for the main shock, is posed and experimentally studied. In the course of the study, the classification of the so-called triads of earthquakes was considered. Plans to make the disability benefits system fit for the future and overhaul the “one size fits all” approach are set to be published today (Monday 29 April), following the Prime Minister’s speech which set out the government’s wide-ranging ambitions for welfare reform.   

The Modernising Support Green Paper will explore how our welfare system could be redesigned to ensure people with disabilities and long-term health conditions get the support they need to achieve the best outcomes, with an approach that focuses support on those with the greatest needs and extra costs.

The UK’s health landscape has changed since Personal Independence Payment ( PIP ) was introduced in 2013 with the intention that it would be a more sustainable benefit that would support disabled people to live independently by helping with the extra costs they face. 

However, the caseload and costs are now spiralling. There are now 2.6 million people of working age claiming  PIP  and  DLA  – with 33,000 new awards for  PIP  each month which is more than double the rate before the pandemic. This is expected to cost the taxpayer £28 billion a year by 2028/29 – a 110% increase in spending since 2019.

This is in part fuelled by the rise in people receiving  PIP  for mental health conditions such as mixed anxiety and depressive disorders, with monthly awards doubling from 2,200 to 5,300 a month since 2019. 

Since 2015, the proportion of the caseload receiving the highest rate of PIPhas increased from 25% to 36%. And many more people being awarded PIPnow have mental health conditions than when it was first introduced.  

In line with the wider reforms to ensure the welfare system is fair and compassionate, the Modernising Support Green Paper proposals centre on targeting and improving the support for those who need it most.

These ideas include removing the  PIP  assessment altogether for people with certain long term health conditions or disabilities, including those with terminal illnesses to reduce bureaucracy and make life easier for those most in need of support.

By more accurately targeting support, we will ensure the large scale of government expenditure on  PIP  translates into better outcomes for disabled people and those with health conditions. 

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said:

It’s clear that our disability benefits system isn’t working in the way it was intended, and we’re determined to reform it to ensure it’s sustainable for the future, so we can continue delivering support to those who genuinely need it most.
Today’s Green Paper marks the next chapter of our welfare reforms and is part of our plan to make the benefits system fairer to the taxpayer, better targeted to individual needs and harder to exploit by those who are trying to game the system.
We’re inviting views from across society to ensure everyone has a chance to make their voices heard and shape our welfare reforms.

Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride said:   

We’re making the biggest welfare reforms in a generation – protecting those most in need while supporting thousands into work as we modernise our benefit system to reflect the changing health landscape.
A decade on from the introduction of  PIP , this Green Paper opens the next chapter of reform, enhancing the support for people with health conditions and disabilities while ensuring the system is fair to the taxpayer.

The Green Paper sets out proposals across three key priorities to fundamentally reform the system:

Making changes to the eligibility criteria for  PIP , so it is fairer and better targeted

Through previous consultations, we have been told that the criteria currently used in assessments do not always fully reflect how a disability or health condition impacts on a person’s daily life. The criteria have changed over time and no longer capture these different impacts as originally intended.

We will consider whether the current thresholds for entitlement correctly reflect the need for ongoing financial support. This includes considering if current descriptors - such as the need for aids and appliances - are good indicators of extra costs.

We will also look at changing the qualifying period for  PIP  in order to ensure the impact that people’s conditions will have on them over time is fully understood and consider whether we should change the test used to determine if a condition is likely to continue long-term.

Reforming the  PIP  assessment so that it is more closely linked to a person’s condition and exploring removing assessment entirely for those most in need.

PIP  is over a decade old and a lot has changed since the assessment was developed. We know some people continue to find  PIP  assessments difficult and repetitive, and view the assessment as too subjective.

We will consider whether some people could receive  PIP  without needing an assessment by basing entitlement on specific health conditions or disabilities supported by medical evidence.

This includes looking at whether evidence of a formal diagnosis by a medical expert should be a requirement to be assessed as eligible for  PIP . This will make it easier and quicker for people with severe or terminal conditions to get the vital support they need.

We will explore alternative approaches to ensure people are given the right help to fulfil their potential and live independently. The UK has used a fixed cash transfer system since the 1970s but there are a number of international systems that look at the specific extra costs people have and provide more tailored support instead.

For example, in New Zealand, the amount of Disability Allowance is based on a person’s extra costs which are verified by a health practitioner. Norway’s Basic Benefit requires people to provide a letter from a GP outlining the nature of their condition and the associated extra costs. 

We are considering options including one-off grants to better help people with significant costs such as home adaptations or expensive equipment, as well as giving vouchers to contribute towards specific costs, or reimbursing claimants who provide receipts for purchases of aids, appliances or services.

This reflects the fact that some claimants will have significant extra costs related to their disability, and others will have minimal or specific costs.

While these alternative models help people with the extra costs of their disability or health condition, we know other forms of support including health care, social services care provision and respite are also important to help people to realise their full potential and live independently.

We are also considering whether some people receiving  PIP  who have lower, or no extra costs, may have better outcomes from improved access to treatment and support than from a cash payment.

Our landmark Two Nations report laid bare the lasting impact of the pandemic on our nation’s most vulnerable communities.
With the welfare system now grappling with the combined challenges of economic inactivity, school absence and mental health, this consultation provides a meaningful opportunity to shape the future of Britain’s welfare state.
We owe it to those most struggling to make sure the benefit system provides the best support to those who need it. And with costs skyrocketing, it is time to bring the welfare system into the post-lockdown age.

The Green Paper is the latest of the government’s welfare reforms to ensure disabled people and people with long-term health conditions can live full and independent lives. It builds on last year’s Health and Disability White Paper and the £2.5 billion Back to Work Plan which will break down barriers to work for over one million people.  

The Government is also delivering the largest expansion in mental health services in a generation, with almost £5 billion of extra funding over the past five years, and a near doubling of mental health training places.

Our reforms to the Work Capability Assessment are expected to reduce the number of people put onto the highest tier of incapacity benefits by 424,000, people who will now receive personalised support to prepare for work, while our Chance to Work Guarantee will mean people can try work without fear of losing their benefits.

An earthquake is defined as a rapture that occurs on the earth’s crust, and it’s brought about by building up of stress in the crust through plate movements on fault lines (Yeats Sieh & Allen, 1997). The fracture comes about when the strain goes beyond the strength which the brittle lithospheric rock can hold. Earthquakes have numerous effects on society at large. The effects vary from social, political, physical, and psychological problems. Earthquakes occur briefly, but the aftershock continues for months while the damages caused last for years (Kellenberg & Mobarak 2008)

The worst earthquake in over 200 years struck Port-au-Prince near the Caribbean city of Haiti on the afternoon of 12th January 2010. The earthquake damaged structures, displaced millions, and killed thousands of people. Official estimates stated that 222,500 people died, 300,000 were severely injured, more than 1.2 million people were displaced, and 97,000 houses were totally destroyed while 188,000 were damaged.

The short-term effects of the earthquake include food shortage, lack of clean water; breakdown of communication, lack of sufficient medical care, closure of ports and main roads, increased mortally, injuries, fires, the spread of communicable diseases, destruction of buildings, and shortage of petroleum goods (Skidmore & Toya, 2007).

Displacements

After the disaster, due to the destruction of homes, victims are forced to live in rescue camps. Overcrowding in these camps brings about the spread of communicable diseases, especially water-borne diseases which are communicable.

Poor medical care

Destruction of health facilities, including hospitals, dispensaries, and clinics, increases health problems due to the lack of laboratories for diagnosis and drugs. It’s very costly to rebuild hospitals and thus very poor medical care.

Destruction of schools closed down all schooling activities. Putting up new schools and equipping them is a long-term activity.

Social effects of earthquakes

There are many social problems brought about by people losing their relatives hence more widows, widowers, and orphans. The people affected by the disaster due to posttraumatic stress behave in strange ways; hence this affects the way they socialize. They become emotional, easily angered, and become antisocial.

Psychological effects of earthquakes

Earthquakes, unlike other natural disasters like floods and hurricanes, cause serious psychological stress since they occur with no warning ((Slemmons and dePolo 1986). This sudden occurrence gives no time for the victims to make psychological adjustments to enable them to cope up with the loss.

Disasters have a very bad effect on the increasing prevalence of psychological sicknesses (Bolt, 1992).

Depending on one’s age, the children are at the risk of experiencing extreme psychiatric reactions. The symptoms differ from the ages of the victims and may include:

  • Preschoolers: The children express some signs of psychological distress through; sucking of thumbs, clinging to their parents, wetting their beds, loss of their appetite, fear of being in dark places, regressive behavior, and withdrawals from friends (Bolt 1992).
  • Elementary school: They tend to be irritable, show a lot of aggressiveness, constant nightmares, absence from school, lack of concentration, clinginess, and withdrawal from their duties and friends.
  • Adolescents: Adolescents might show signs of agitation, lack of concentration, physical complaints, sleepless nights, poor eating habits, and being antisocial (Slemmons and dePolo 1986).

Political effects of earthquakes

The president and government officials were operating from police stations and tents. This disaster has affected the plans for the elections, which were to be conducted later this year.

The process of aid provision to areas affected by earthquakes is linked with politics. The government official needs to engage themselves in post-disaster activities in order to facilitate healing of their community members by coming up with motions to be discussed on parliament on disaster management and rural development.

The government officials should be in a position to site and make major amendments in town planning legislation and on the regulations on land zoning and the bye-laws for safe construction of masonry buildings to come up with better structures that can resist earthquakes hence increase structural safety.

The government should be in a position to come up with a state-level sensitization program on earthquake risk management.

They should also come up with a way of introducing inter-state sharing of resources for disaster management.

They should develop a school curriculum that must be learned by all elementary school levels on disaster preparedness and management as a school awareness and safety program.

They should also come up with guidelines for availing assistance to state-level training institutes to come up with faculties that train disaster management as a profession.

They should also come up with a national emergency plan to communicate through the media on disaster preparedness and response. And also communicate on designated state rescue centers.

Economic effects of earthquakes

Debt from other countries: This comes from borrowing money for rebuilding the damaged structures and improving technologies to come up with more earthquake-proof buildings (Slemmons & DePolo 1986).

Haiti’s economy before the disaster had been positively growing since the year 2005 through partnering, allowing free duty exports to the united states. Haiti having access to the United States market has created a good opportunity for stable growth in the economy. The earthquake dealt a devastating blow to an economy that was growing; the majority of the country’s population and structures were concentrated in the major towns, a factor that amplified the effects of the earthquake. According to Kellenberg & Mobarak (2008), natural disasters are strongly felt by the developing nations due to the concentration of people and economic places in a central place and due to poor response mechanisms.

The earthquake, on the other hand, is a serious setback to Haiti’s stable economic growth. It affected the tourism sector due to the destruction of tourist attraction sites and the destruction of major hotels.

Haiti being the 17 th largest supplier of United States apparel goods as stated by the footwear association, this disaster caused an immediate impact on the countries economy.

Haiti is the largest trade partner with the USA exporting more than 75% of apparel and textiles, as was stated by Richard Hastings, working as a consumer strategist in Hunter securities an investment bank.

Effects of the Earthquake on the society

Experiencing an earthquake is a stressful experience with typical effects like fear, sadness, grief, helplessness, anger, and anxiety. The levels of the feelings vary from the degree of connection to the victims affected. Governments should put into consideration policies to ensure disaster mitigation measures are put in place to avoid the degree of impact in case of earthquakes.

STORY SUMMARY

HAWAIʻI VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK - The significant spike in earthquakes has required park officials to close some areas "that could put visitors and staff at risk if the volcano erupts."

(BIVN) – Kīlauea volcano is not erupting. The significant increase in seismicity that began this weekend beneath the upper East Rift Zone and caldera south of Halemaʻumaʻu has continued into early Tuesday. 

Earthquakes continue beneath the upper East Rift Zone (between Puhimau Crater and Hilina Pali road) and beneath Kīlauea caldera south of Halemaʻumaʻu. The USGS Volcano Alert Level for Kīlauea has been maintained at ADVISORY.

“At this time, it is not possible to say with certainty if this increase in activity will lead to an eruption in the near future – or simply remain confined below ground,” the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory wrote on Monday. “However, the gradual strengthening of seismic swarms suggests that an eruption in Kīlauea’s summit region or beneath the upper East Rift Zone, within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, is one potential outcome.”

Temporary closures due to the activity remain in effect within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, which include:

  • Chain of Craters Road from the intersection at Crater Rim Drive will close at 5 p.m. Monday, April 29.
  • Hilina Pali Road is closed to all use. Kulanaokuaiki Campground is closed.
  • Overnight camping is suspended for all coastal sites, Nāpau and Pepeiao Cabin.
  • Kaʻū Desert Trail is closed from the Footprints Exhibit.
  • Maunaiki Trail is closed.

The National Park Service said the increased seismicity has not impacted traffic safety or infrastructure projects at the summit.

Scientists say the seismic activity on the East Rift Zone is confined to the upper East Rift Zone, with no significant earthquakes or deformation occurring past the Mauna Ulu region. Seismicity in Kīlauea’s Southwest Rift Zone remains low overall.
