Colorado State University

College of natural sciences, department of computer science, new computer science major.

We are excited to offer a new computer science major beginning in Fall 2020. This major is available to both new and current students. Please read our helpful FAQ and documents below for more information.

FALL 2020 COMPUTER SCIENCE MAJOR FAQ

General Questions

The goal of the new CS curriculum is to create a flexible, unified CS major that reflects the different areas of the field of computer science and its interdisciplinary nature.

The new curriculum also reflects feedback from students, faculty, and industry.

  • 8-10 upper division CS courses.
  • Including a Calculus I for Computational Sciences majors choice, currently being designed between the Math and CS departments.
  • 7 credits of natural sciences from a restricted CS approved list.
  • CS 201 (ethics) for one AUCC Arts & Humanities requirement.
  • Opportunity to choose a breadth of CS upper division courses, much like the CS-CS major today.
  • Option to choose a minor. Most all CSU minors will fit due to the reduction in required math and science credits, and no technical electives will be required for students who choose this option.
  • Option to choose a concentration in one of 5 areas: HCC: Human Centered Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Computing Systems, Networks and Security, Software Engineering.

No, if you are currently a CS-CS, CS-HCC, or ACT major, you are grandfathered into the old curriculum and do not have to change.

Each student’s situation and interest are unique so make sure you thoroughly review the new check sheets to determine what is best for you; however, the closer you are to graduation, the more likely you will want to stay on your current curriculum. Other common feedback we have heard from students:

  • If you are committed to a minor (other than math) or a 2nd major, it most always makes sense to switch to the new curriculum
  • If you are a CS-CS major and primarily have CS 3xx and CS4xx courses remaining, you may want to stay on the current curriculum.
  • If you are an HCC major who is interested in more psychology courses and less CS courses, stay on the current curriculum.
  • If you are an ACT major, who is more interested in the non-CS technical electives and less math, stay on your current curriculum.

Look through the curriculum comparison, checksheets, and more on this webpage. More information is also available on our Degrees webpage.

No, this curriculum is effective Fall 2020. You cannot officially change until fall.

As this is not effective until Fall 2020, DARs will not be available for this curriculum until summer or fall 2020.

The CS academic advisors will gladly answer your questions via email or meet with you. However, in your email or prior to your meeting, we will require you to read through the provided materials on the CS website, and let us know what you are thinking and why. This will give us insights into what is important to you.

Class Choice Questions

Yes, but a CS advisor will need to do a substitution before you graduate.

No, as long as you request this at time of change of major and do so by end of Spring 2021 semester.

Do I have to take Calculus II?

The new curriculum does not require Calculus II except if you choose the AI/ML concentration. Do note that if you take MATH 160 as your Calc I course, you will need MATH 161 if you select MATH 369 as your linear algebra choice rather than DSCI 369. If you optionally want to take Calculus II, it will count as a technical elective for those concentrations that allow one lower division technical elective. The current curricula that require Calculus II will still require Calculus II.

We are hoping for Fall 2020, but will know more towards the end of semester.

  • MATH 369: MATH 161 or Calculus I for Computational Sciences
  • DSCI 369: MATH 124 & MATH 126

Frequently Asked Questions:

That depends on a few factors. The average cost of online college tuition varies depending on the type of school you attend—for-profit, not-for-profit, public, and private schools all vary in their costs. Pricing is simple, however, at CSU Global. Tuition is based on only the classes you’re taking during a given term. Our students pay a flat per-credit-hour tuition rate based on whether those credits are for Undergraduate or Graduate courses. And thanks to our tuition guarantee, your tuition rate won't increase from enrollment through graduation, so you can accurately calculate the total cost of your CSU Global education.

Online college tuition could be cheaper than tuition at a traditional, campus-based program, but it still depends on where you choose to enroll in and which traditional, campus-based program you compare the online rates against. Tuition rates can vary significantly from school to school. With the average annual cost of college tuition rising by about 8% each year. This can make calculating your expected tuition costs tricky—when you’re looking at schools other than CSU Global. Why? Because CSU Global does tuition differently. We guarantee that your rate will not increase as long as you remain enrolled as a student in good standing. Whatever you’re paying for your first credit hour is the same rate you’ll pay for your last, making it much easier to calculate the total expected cost of an online bachelor’s or master’s degree.

The average cost of an online bachelor’s degree varies, but according to U.S. News and World Repor t, the average online bachelor’s degree costs between $38,496 and $60,593. A complete 120-credit hour bachelor’s degree at CSU Global costs $42,000. That amount often decreases when factoring in any transfer credits that are applied.

The average cost of an online master’s degree varies from $30,000 and $120,000, depending on where you choose to go to school and on how long it takes to complete your program. In a stark comparison, an online graduate degree at CSU Global is $18,000*.

*This amount is calculated based on most CSU Global graduate programs, which are 36 credit hours. Some students may be required to take an additional class if they have an undergraduate GPA below 3.00, making the full degree program 39 credit hours. Additionally, the Master’s in Military and Emergency Responder Psychology program is 60 credit hours.

Absolutely! While CSU Global proudly offers low, affordable online college tuition, many students still choose to participate in some form of Financial Aid. In addition to scholarships, grants, loans, and other programs, there are many options available to help manage your educational expenses. See our Financial Aid page for additional details.

For undergraduate programs, CSU Global offers a number of Alternative Credit Options to help you graduate faster, saving both time and money. Additionally, Credit By Exam and Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) can help reduce the time and cost required to earn your degree.

The cost of course materials varies by class. In the 2023/24 academic year, the average cost per course of books was approximately $65. Many CSU Global courses utilize RedShelf within the virtual classroom. This allows you to have your course materials built in and readily available!
