Our family regularly talks about AoPS. We try to think about how our life would be different without you all. What if my daughter hadn't learned to love math? What if she never experienced being pushed to her limits? Overcoming failure? She wouldn't be who she is. And she is AWESOME! A very proud mom here. We are so fortunate that we found AoPS Academy. I credit AoPS for much of her confidence.

About the Art of Problem Solving Initiative

Founded in 2004, the Art of Problem Solving Initiative, Inc. was created by people who love math and love teaching to help students access the study of advanced mathematics.

The Initiative began by running the USA Mathematical Talent Search , a nationwide math contest sponsored by the National Security Agency which continues to run to this day. In each round, this contest gives students a full month to work on five challenging proof-based problems. Students then get individual feedback on their work, including comments on their mathematical reasoning and on their proof-writing skills. By taking away the usual time pressures seen in many math contests, students have the opportunity to go more deeply and to explore.

For many years, the Initiative also ran the Local Programs Initiative which provided fiscal sponsorship to math circles and clubs across the country.

Now, the main project of the Initiative is Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM) , a project to help underserved students find a realistic pathway towards becoming scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and programmers. During the summer after 7th grade, students are invited to participate in a free three-week residential program on a college campus where they gain the academic and social/emotional preparation to succeed in future programs for advanced study. They then receive academic advising throughout 8th grade and high school to help them and their families find the best opportunities for their educations.

The Art of Problem Solving Initiative receives support from Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) , which develops resources for high-performing middle and high school students including the largest online community of avid math students in the English-speaking world. The AoPS online school has trained many winners of major national mathematics competitions, including several gold medalists at the International Math Olympiad, Davidson Fellows, and winners of the Intel and Siemens Talent Search competitions.

The Art of Problem Solving Initiative is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. It continues to be led by expert mathematicians and educators to this day. Please consider joining our contributors by donating to support advanced math education.

A beginner’s guide to commissioning art in Dallas

Going custom could be the perfect solution to your blank walls. here’s what local artists and experts have to say about the process..

Art gallery space with numerous works exhibited on the walls and guests admiring the artwork.

By Catherine Wendlandt

It can take years to procure the perfect work of art, be it canvas or sculpture, to display in your living room. But if you can’t find exactly what you want, it might be worth commissioning a custom art piece. The benefit of going custom is that the art is “incredibly bespoke and personal to you, which is really exciting,” says Grace Cooper, assistant director at Samuel Lynne Galleries . But, it can also be risky — you don’t always know what you’ll end up with. Set yourself up for success with these tips from local artists and experts.

Take your time looking for an artist.

Finding an artist for your commission is “a lot like dating,” says John Runyon, founder of Runyon Arts , an art advising and collection management firm. Talk to various galleries and artists. See if their style, timeline and pricing are right for you. Look around your home — where will the piece fit, what styles do you like and what story do you want it to tell? Cooper recommends spending some time on this step. “The worst thing that you can do is rush it and not take the time to honor your taste, honor your style and really feel out what exactly you’re looking for,” he says.

Where to find artists.

There are a variety of opportunities to connect with artists locally at galleries and art incubators (check out Goldmark Cultural Center ), or at art events like Cottonwood Art Festival and Dallas Art Fair . Open studios or art walks, such as the Cedars Open Studio Tour , are another option. And if you’re interested in perhaps discovering the freshest new talent, try checking out a student art show at Dallas College or another local school. If you want to widen your search, there are countless resources online, such as Artnet , Artsy and Saatchi Art .

Consider working with an art advisor.

If you’re not sure where to start, consider hiring an art advisor to lead you through the process. Advisors can leverage their relationships with galleries to find an artist who suits your style. They’ll know how to narrow down what you’re looking for and conduct home visits to understand where your art might go. Hiring an advisor is just “hedging your bets,” Runyon says, like using a financial consultant for your retirement investments.

Avoid micromanaging the artist.

Inside an artist's studio three artists observe works propped on easels.

Keep in mind that many artists won’t let you see the work until it’s completed. It can be discouraging to see it mid-process, without the finishing touches or final vision in mind, local artist Lydia Yost says. You’ve hired the artist because of their “wild imagination” and you should give them the freedom to use it, adds Dallas-based artist Kirk Sisco . “Just say, ‘Go be wonderful and bring me back something juicy.’”

Be prepared with reference material for a portrait.

If you commission a portrait, the artist will likely ask you for reference images. Give them your favorite photo, but be ready to pivot to another image. Sometimes the provided image is too blurry or poorly lit and will make a bad portrait, Sisco explains. When doing portrait work, Yost likes to get five to 10 images, so she can see the subject’s facial structure and muscle movement from different angles. Additionally, she’ll ask about the subject’s personality, their favorite music or a cherished memory. “All of those things add to the soul of the painting,” she says.

Remember that many factors play into the price.

The bill for your piece might seem arbitrary, but many factors play into the price tag, Runyon says. Those include materials, studio rent, the piece’s size and the amount of effort it’ll take to create. It can also include the finishing touches, like a custom frame. “The frame alone is half of the cost, even more than the artwork,” Dallas artist Hugh DeWitte says. He also charges 20% more for a commissioned piece. An artist further in their career who’s built a reputation and a brand will probably charge more than an emerging artist, Cooper says. Additionally, installation can get pricey if the artist needs to rent a truck or deliver the piece after hours, for example. Because of all this, you should be prepared to put down 50% at the beginning.

Art is an investment. Treat it as such.

A commissioned art piece can last generations, so treat it like any other heirloom. Ensure art is covered by your homeowner’s insurance. When you get your receipt, which you should keep, “ask the artist to describe the art,” DeWitte says. Oil paints live longer than house paints. There are various types of canvases and frames. All that should be listed on the bill, and years down the line, it will help determine the piece’s value.
